00:00To stay safe, never be alone, always have a friend with me, even if I'm going to the toilet, always
00:05like to have a friend, never leave my drink unattended, ever, always be in well-lit places, like I won't
00:13take a shortcut down a dark area, even if it takes me an extra 20 minute walk, I'll take it,
00:17just to be in the lights.
00:19I try to make sure that when I'm walking to my car, I've got someone with me, and as soon
00:24as I get to my car, I make sure to lock the door immediately. I never like to be alone
00:28at night.
00:30I usually just use the voice note thing on Instagram, and I just ramble onto my friends to pretend I'm
00:36on a call with them, and so it seems like I'm preoccupied, and that if anyone, hopefully not, is coming
00:42up behind me, they know, oh, this person's on a phone call, so if something bad happens, then they'll know
00:46something bad's happened to them.
00:47At night, I always think of places where I can, if someone is following me, where I can go, so
00:53I always, when I'm walking, I always look around to see, oh, if someone's chasing me, I can go over
00:58there, or if there's enough lights when I'm walking around, so if it's too dark, I won't go down that
01:03street.
01:04Sometimes I always look if there's cars going past, so if someone tries to do something to me, I can
01:09always flag down a car.
01:11I'm always looking to see if there's people around, but I also, like, always have an escape plan, or, like,
01:17where I'm going to go, or somewhere like that, so it's always playing in my mind that, oh, I can
01:21have my keys in there if I need to turn around, or I can go jump over that fence if
01:25I need to get around.
01:26I have a lot of close boyfriends, and they always help me, and they always are a phone call away
01:32if I need help, so I always feel safe to have a support unit for me, yeah.
01:39I don't necessarily have a, unfortunately, it's a poor reflection, but there's no, like, practical steps I really take to
01:46stay safe.
01:47However, the small things, like avoiding areas that I know might be a little dodgy or suspicious, and keeping my
01:55phone charged and on me at all times so that I've got people that I can contact, really.
01:59I always offer lifts, especially with nights out on the town.
02:03Like, I always want to make sure that there's someone around who's safe and can drive, and because that just
02:10really helps with, like, moving people around, especially with intoxication and some other people who might not be as safe.
02:16And so, yeah, that's one practical step.
02:19Again, I don't really have any, you know, specific considerations I have.
02:23Of course, there's been times where I have felt unsafe on a night out if things are kicking off, but
02:27I'd say it's much more of an exception to the rule.
02:30Not something I'm generally anticipating when I'm out.
02:33Not something that I'm explicitly trying to protect myself against.
02:37It's mainly about trying to keep an eye on your mates, checking in on them if there's something that you
02:42pick up on that they might be feeling uncomfortable or feeling unsafe.
02:47And, yeah, trying to be that person that, you know, they will come to if something bad happens so that
02:52you can help them.
02:54Um, just nothing out of the regular, just the normal stuff, you know, stay in the safe areas.
02:59And would you say Wollongong is a safe place to be?
03:02Um, yeah, I'd say it's a pretty safe place to be.
03:04I tend just to stay home past 9pm.
03:07Um, do a bit of running in the afternoon, but other than that, I'm not really a big fan of
03:12going out at night.
03:13Um, don't feel too safe, but it's alright.
03:16Yeah.
03:16Why would you say you don't feel safe?
03:19I feel like it's...
03:21The streets are very kind of...
03:24Not a lot of people around at some areas where I live.
03:26Um, it's very quiet, and walking around at night time, I feel like chances of running into people, you know,
03:33you don't really want to talk to someone when it's that late.
03:35So, I feel a little bit more unsafe, because I don't know who I'm going to talk to or what
03:38I'm going to see, yeah.
03:40I feel like I'm going to talk to someone when it's that late.
03:45People aren't going to tell you when they're not allowed at night time.
03:45I'm going to talk to you at Tech Supership Hospital I'm going to talk to you at Tech Supership Hospital,
03:45I guess what?
