00:15We now present George Edwards in Frankenstein.
00:50Frankenstein advised the captain to carry firearms in future and to let his crew do the same.
00:55The next day, Captain Walton again visited Frankenstein's cabin.
01:05Well, Captain, what news?
01:08The ship is carefully guarded, Baron Frankenstein. We have seen no sign of the monster.
01:12He's sure that he would return here to kill me?
01:15He cannot board this vessel now without being seen.
01:18I have placed men on guard all over the vessel.
01:20Oh, that monster is almost a devil. You do not know what he can do.
01:25I must apologize to you because of the abject fear which I showed yesterday.
01:30You need not apologize, Captain. All men show fear when they see the monster.
01:35I am his creator and I am afraid.
01:38Did you say that the monster is impervious to bullets?
01:41I did not say that. He has certainly been wounded twice, but he has recovered. He is so strong.
01:47Well, if we have another visit from him, it shall be his last. I swear that we shall kill him.
01:53I hope so.
01:54Do you feel you are able to tell me what happened after the death of your beloved wife?
01:59Well, the bodyguard Fabian and myself found my wife's body at the foot of the stairs.
02:06I picked the body up tenderly and bore it to another room while Fabian went for assistance.
02:13I looked at the still form of my wife.
02:17Then I knelt down and prayed.
02:20I prayed that I be granted life so that I may destroy the monster which I created.
02:28Has not my punishment been enough?
02:31Have not others suffered because of my sin?
02:35When will my suffering cease?
02:38Oh, Elizabeth, my beloved wife, I will live to avenge you.
02:43And to avenge those who have died because of my evil word.
02:48I kept my promise, Frankenstein.
02:52What? You here?
02:54You cannot move.
02:56The creature is stronger than the creator.
03:00I hold you fast.
03:01Oh, so great is my hatred that it gives me strength.
03:04I shall free myself. I shall kill you.
03:07Hear me, little man. I despise you.
03:10Let me go. Let me go.
03:13Let me go.
03:14Hear me.
03:15Did you not condemn me to a life without a mate, without a companion?
03:20Did you not create me and make me an object of hatred and contempt?
03:24Now all men are against you.
03:27They know that you created me.
03:29They know that you have brought misery to others.
03:32Therefore, you will become an object of hatred and contempt.
03:35You are now without a wife.
03:38I killed her.
03:40That is her still body lying on the bed.
03:44Suffer now as I have suffered, Frankenstein.
03:47Oh, if only I had to steal you.
03:51You have not the strength.
03:54In your foolishness, you have made your creature stronger than yourself.
03:59My work is done now.
04:02I am leaving here.
04:03I cannot make you suffer more.
04:05Therefore, I know that every man's hand will be against you, and you will be an outcast, just as I
04:11am.
04:12Where, where are you going?
04:15Who knows?
04:16I shall wander the world.
04:20Mayhap I will find someone as hideous as myself.
04:24Someone who will be a companion to me.
04:27Wherever you go, I shall follow you.
04:29If it be to the ends of the earth, I will not be content to rest until I have destroyed
04:34you.
04:35Have a care that I do not destroy you.
04:38I could do it now.
04:40Tell you my fingers about your throat.
04:42All right.
04:43Why do you not kill me?
04:45It would be a merciful release.
04:47But I should not die happily, knowing that you still live.
04:51You shall live on.
04:53You shall suffer as I have suffered.
04:56Mayhap we shall meet again.
04:59We shall meet again, I swear it.
05:01But tell me, have you the powers of evil?
05:04How is it that you were able to find us?
05:07How is it that you were able to get into the house?
05:12I laughed as I watched you searching for me.
05:15You did not think that I could find shelter on the roof?
05:18That I could lower myself into the window of this room?
05:22Your wife slept.
05:24But she heard me as I came through the window.
05:28She started up and seized her pistol.
05:30She fired, but her aim was wild.
05:33She did not struggle much, Frankenstein.
05:36Then I took her body and hurled it down the stairs.
05:40You have been on the roof all the time?
05:44I have.
05:46Oh, Frankenstein, I have set for the book.
05:48Why?
05:49The monster, shoot him.
05:51You shall not kill me.
05:53Oh, he's not my homicide.
05:55Make him let me go now.
05:56He's choking me.
05:57Oh, let that man go.
05:58Do not kill him.
05:59He shall die.
06:01All my enemies shall die.
06:03Do not approach Frankenstein.
06:05With one hand I can slay this man.
06:07With the other I hold you at play.
06:09Oh, do not kill that man.
06:11He shall die.
06:13Oh, it gives me pleasure to make men die.
06:15One man gave me life, but I have given death to many.
06:19Help, help.
06:20The man struggled for a week of Frankenstein.
06:23You cannot aid him now.
06:25I hurl him aside.
06:27And thus another of my enemies has died.
06:31I hurl you aside.
06:33And I say farewell.
06:35Seek not to find me.
06:37My work here is done.
06:39Oh, come back.
06:40I must have further speech with you.
06:41I must find some way to make peace with you.
06:43You will have peace if you do not strive to borrow peace.
06:48What happened, Baron Frankenstein?
06:50Did the monster make his escape?
06:52He climbed through the window.
06:54And with surprising agilities, crumbled onto the roof.
06:57I could not go after him, but I called for help.
07:01When I turned, I saw the body of my wife lying on the bed.
07:05And the body of the man, Fabian, lying on the floor.
07:10Oh, words cannot express my utter.
07:13My horror and remorse.
07:15I think I ripped and hurled myself on the floor in a frenzy of agony.
07:20Presently, the door opened and the burgomaster entered.
07:23As soon as he saw me.
07:26Baron Frankenstein, what has happened?
07:28Oh, if you have a pistol there, shoot me.
07:31Put an end to my life.
07:32I cannot live on.
07:33What has happened to Fabian?
07:34He is dead.
07:36Murdered by the monster.
07:37My wife is also dead.
07:38Murdered by the monster which you say you created?
07:41I did create him.
07:43And may God forgive me for that sin.
07:45It seems that my suffering is never to end.
07:49I am guilty of the murder of these innocent people.
07:53For months we have been striving to find that monster and to destroy him.
07:57If you are his creator as you say, then it is your responsibility to find him and destroy him, Baron
08:04Frankenstein.
08:04I know it.
08:05I have communicated with the authorities.
08:07And there is talk of ordering your arrest.
08:10If you created a devil, you should be punished.
08:14Oh, have I not been punished enough?
08:16The people of the village murmur against you.
08:18They say that you should be hanged for these murders.
08:21Oh, I feel that I am going mad.
08:23I know that I turned this murderer loose upon society.
08:26That while he lives, there may be other murders.
08:29Therefore, I swear a sacred oath.
08:31That while there is breath in my body, while I live, I should devote my life to tracking him down.
08:37We feel that if you remain here, the monster will remain.
08:40That other lives will be in danger.
08:43So all men are against me.
08:45I am to suffer as my creature has suffered.
08:48I am to know what it is to be a fugitive, an object of hatred and scorn.
08:54It seems that his revenge is indeed complete.
08:56I ask you for your own sake to leave here today.
09:00I will leave very soon.
09:02Spare me a few minutes so that I may pray beside the body of my beloved wife.
09:07Then will my journey commence.
09:09Where it will take me, I know not.
09:11But if it be to the end of the earth, I will find him and destroy him.
09:17Oh, would that I destroyed him before I gave him life.
09:21So be it, Baron Frankenstein.
09:23I will see that you are not molested before you leave the village.
09:27Oh, await me downstairs.
09:28I will join you in a few minutes.
09:31So, Baron Frankenstein, you were forced to leave your native village.
09:35Yes.
09:36When I left my home, my first act was to try and find some clue by which I might trace
09:42the steps of my fiendish enemy.
09:44I wandered to the cemetery and I prayed a while by the grave of the child William.
09:50Then I heard a sound behind me.
09:52I looked up and it was the monster watching me.
09:55He did not speak but fled away and I pursued him only to lose him.
10:00But he left a trail of death and disaster wherever he went and for many months the ceaseless pursuit went
10:06on.
10:07Sometimes I would almost come up with him.
10:10Once, when I was traveling by night, the broad disk of the moon arose and it shone upon a huge,
10:18ghastly, distorted shape which fled before me with more than mortal speed.
10:23I went to the coast and by a strange chance, I saw the fiend hide himself in a vessel bound
10:30for the Black Sea.
10:31I put my passage in the same ship but he escaped.
10:35I know not how.
10:36I traveled to the vials of Tartary and Russia and once I came upon a peasant's home in the vials
10:43of Tartary.
10:44I saw the peasant standing outside his cottage.
10:47He was wringing his hands in terror and he said,
10:49I have seen the devil himself, a strange, horrid fiend.
10:54Tell me, my friend, what have you seen?
10:56The devil himself, I tell you, sir, a huge, shambling creature with a countenance more hideous than I have ever
11:02seen.
11:02He fought his way into my cottage, took all my food, aided himself and placed his cold, clammy hands upon
11:08my throat.
11:09I screamed in mortal agony.
11:12Then he withdrew his hands and laughed, the most ghastly laugh that I have ever heard.
11:17Tell me, where did this creature go?
11:19I knew not.
11:20He went out of my cottage and I was afraid to follow him.
11:23Here, take the silver to compensate you for anything which the monster stole from you.
11:27I must be close to him.
11:28I feel my search will soon end.
11:31Oh, that laugh again.
11:33He will kill us.
11:34Don't let him kill me.
11:36My quarry is near me.
11:37Stand aside, man.
11:38This time he shall die.
11:39What happened, Baron Frankenstein?
11:40Did you shoot the monster?
11:42Ask me no more now.
11:43I am tired.
11:44Later on, I will tell you what happened on that fateful day.
11:54The End
