00:02I went for a wave and I thought I got hit by a dolphin initially because there were
00:06so many of them but no it wasn't. Something grabbed me and dragged me down into the water
00:13and I went whoa and I knew it was a shark. I was like wow it's got me. It dragged
00:17me
00:18down a fair bit and I got to a point where I saw its eye, had a big eye, like
00:23a big black
00:23eye like that and I was trying to get my finger into it. I knew it had my leg. I
00:29personally
00:29reckon it gave me the wink and then shut my leg off and I knew it had taken my leg.
00:35As a surfer you normally try and grab your leg rope to get your board back but I realised
00:38that I didn't have a leg so I tried to pull nothing and then I saw my board just floating
00:42around, a heap of blood and then a set wave came through and I said I've just got to get
00:47on this one. It took me in about 20 metres which was handy. That day I noticed that no
00:55one was on the beach, it was just by myself. However, at that time I saw someone come
00:59down the dune which ended up being Shannon. At that time I was a bit gassed. I knew I'd
01:06lost a lot of blood. I'd seen it in the water. From my experience probably as a firefighter
01:11we were trying to keep calm. I knew that I was losing a lot of blood and I was losing
01:16my energy and my heart. My lung capacity was diminishing so I just tried to remain calm
01:21and just to float in a bit because otherwise I would have probably passed out or something
01:25like that. Then I sort of looked up and Shannon, he was paddling out to me. He had eyes like
01:31saucers like this and the first thing he goes and I said mate, the shark, let's tell
01:35I said look mate, the shark's taking my leg, just got to get in. And the first thing he
01:37said to me is, where's the shark? I'm like, I don't know. Look mate, I've got a bit going
01:43on here. As I was getting to the shore I said to him, you need to put a tourniquet in
01:49my top
01:49right leg and keep it elevated. He's actually dragging me up the beach which is really handy and I knew
01:55that I was probably in trouble so I said, I took my neck flap off because I thought
01:59next stage is going to be CPR. I was getting myself ready for it. So if I took that off
02:05I knew it would be easier for them to sort of get in there. I did say to myself, you're
02:09going to suck this up, you can do this. I think most people who get close to maybe that
02:15life experience, they want to live and I wanted to live and that's, you know, like I was doing
02:22the more I can to survive and just get in there, you know, make that happen.
