Vic Carucci explains why he thought Joe Brady was hit hard by his first loss as Bills head coach, and how it may have impacted his message following the game.
Transcript
00:00We're coming off the first Bills loss of the year, and I wonder your thought on how Joe Brady handled
00:04it.
00:05As soon as they lost the game, I thought, like, I'm going to want to listen to Brady in postgame
00:08because it's his first loss, right, and trying to figure out how he's going to handle it,
00:11what kind of coach he's going to be.
00:13You know, he's one that's about accountability, that everybody's got to point the thumb back at themselves,
00:19and there's turnovers for two straight weeks, but he's taking responsibility for that.
00:22I wonder just your general takeaway on Brady as he finds himself as the Bills coach here over the course
00:29of a year.
00:30Yeah, Jeremy, I, like you, was really anxious to see how he would respond to this loss
00:37from the standpoint of talking to the media.
00:40We don't get to really see what those interactions are with players as a group or individually,
00:46and that's really far more important, but we have to judge something,
00:51and what I was judging was a coach who worked a little too hard
00:56to maintain that coach-friendly or player-friendly coach guy wanting to maintain the connection
01:06and reinforce the belief to his team, I've always got your back.
01:12So when I'm in front of the microphones or cameras, you're going to hear me, again,
01:18point to myself first and foremost.
01:20Now, logically, you could say, well, you want to set that kind of tone, right?
01:26The players can follow that lead.
01:28I'm not positive that that's always the case, even if that's his intention,
01:34and I know now this is maybe getting down to some psychobabble,
01:38but I do believe that his approach felt like that of a very young coach
01:44who didn't quite know where he wanted to go with this,
01:48and it was such a frustrating loss.
01:50The nature of the loss, seeing Josh Allen be as responsible as he was for the loss,
01:57I think all of that hit him kind of hard,
02:01and in the immediate aftermath of the game, it was just, look, blame me.
02:05Just blame me.
02:06And it's not that simple.
02:07We know that.
