00:00Guinea-Bissau's December elections are now in doubt since Senegal is urging the country's
00:05military rulers to lift restrictions on political and civil activities.
00:10The call comes after the National Electoral Commission warned that conditions are not
00:15in place to halt presidential and legislative elections as scheduled.
00:20So far, however, no official postponement has been announced.
00:23Senegal, which is mediating on behalf of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS, says any
00:29change to the electoral calendar must be based on an inclusive, transparent process, with
00:34clear guarantees for a return to civilian rule.
00:37The country has been under military control since November of 2025, when soldiers overthrew
00:44President Umaro Sissoko Bambalo and suspended the electoral process, just a day before provisional
00:51election results were expected.
00:53Now with political and security tensions continuing to mount, Dakar is urging all sides, including
00:59military leaders, to engage in constructive dialogue, exercise restraint and put national
01:04interests first.
