00:00Welcome to our press conference to preview our game against the TORN this weekend.
00:04We'll start off with Alan.
00:06How are you doing, Al?
00:07Yeah, good, thanks.
00:08Good.
00:08David, obviously we've seen a statement this morning from the call about the ownership situation.
00:12Were you surprised when you had seen that?
00:16Yeah, I was surprised because they'd only come in a year and a half ago.
00:21So I think most owners come in a lot longer than that.
00:24I think we all would expect them to be here for the next 20, 30 years, however long it may
00:28be.
00:30Yeah, so pretty surprised.
00:31But maybe after the way things sort of worked out over the transfer window,
00:38I probably was seen through it a little bit, a bit before that.
00:41And I think it's probably there for all Evertonians to see now.
00:46I was going to say, does that explain maybe why they haven't been to the stadium,
00:49why they haven't met yourself, and maybe the transfer window, as you suggest,
00:54were they all signs maybe that this was not a one?
00:57Well, probably looking back, maybe it was the case.
00:59But I truly believed that with new ownership, we were in for it completely with us all.
01:10My ambition coming back was to try and get Everton back to the levels they'd been at maybe in the
01:15past in some ways.
01:16And that could have been challenging for Europe more often and being around it.
01:20And probably you can tell by how I've been a lot over the summertime, you've probably had an idea of
01:26that that's the way it's been.
01:29It's been a difficult summer for us.
01:30And now maybe me, I've only found out this morning myself with everybody else,
01:36that maybe I'm a little bit surprised, but maybe I shouldn't be that surprised.
01:42I know things change, do you feel down personally at all from what you were sort of sold in the
01:47first place?
01:48No, because I love this club too much, and they could have sold me at any time, and they're still
01:52taking it.
01:54But it's forever Tonians, I'm more disappointed, because they've been through so much difficult periods.
02:01They really have.
02:02I think the last thing they really wanted to hear this was that, I think they were, and I used
02:06the word last year a bit,
02:07we went through a season where there wasn't much drama.
02:10You know, we didn't have any relegation problems.
02:14Well, we had a bit of drama with money that we've had to pay to Burnley.
02:19But apart from that, in the main, we've done pretty well over the year,
02:24and we're just starting to get back in the right footing and challenging the right end of the league more
02:29than the wrong end.
02:30And so, yeah, I'm more disappointed forever Tonians that they have to sort of go through another period of who's
02:38going to be the new owners.
02:39How does it affect you and the players day to day?
02:42How does it affect you from the contract position?
02:47I've not really thought about it yet, Al, from that point of view.
02:51But the players have been great so far, and we'll keep them focused on what we've got to do,
02:59what we can do, which is try and win the games.
03:04I always think that, actually, in some ways, Evertonians then galvanise even more so
03:09when it comes to a situation where they know that the team needs help,
03:14the manager needs help, you know, we know we'll stick together.
03:18So we'll certainly be in that camp.
03:20And I guess a quick sale will be beneficial to everybody if that's going to happen.
03:25Yeah, and to be fair, I'm just reading the things that I've seen this morning.
03:30You know, they're looking forward to getting the right people in to take the club further forward.
03:35It's a great club if anybody's out there wants to buy it,
03:37and if they want to speak to me, I'll be the first one to talk to them
03:39and let them know that it's certainly worth buying.
03:41Thanks.
03:42I'll just ask you, obviously, we've been away on an international break.
03:46You're on that, the breaking news was about Manchester City.
03:48What was your reaction when you heard that?
03:51I never heard that.
03:54Where'd you been?
03:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:57Yeah, look, I have to say that it's, I don't know what sort of news it was,
04:02but I do know one thing.
04:04I wasn't here when it was difficult for Everton.
04:07I wasn't here when things were bad.
04:09But now looking at it from where I'm sitting just now,
04:13it looks terrible that we've been docked to points,
04:15we've had to pay some fines, we've got docked, all sorts of things.
04:21And, you know, this feels like not that long ago,
04:23but, you know, there's other things going on which have been 10 years ago
04:26and they've not been dealt with, which I find really difficult.
04:31So I hope it's just not Everton who are getting picked on here.
04:35I think we get picked on by the referees,
04:37but now I think maybe we're getting picked on in every other area as well.
04:41We've got a final one on this one.
04:43What do you think the impact of a sort of drawn-out appeal
04:46will have on the Premier League and everyone in that state?
04:49By the way, I have no idea, Alan,
04:51but I have to say at the back of it is,
04:54Manchester City have helped raise the levels of the Premier League
04:57by the level of football they've played
04:59and their manager and their players have had have been unbelievable.
05:03They really have been.
05:05And I was laughing when I was speaking to somebody who was saying,
05:08all the managers who had to go and play against them,
05:11we all had to park the bus because they were that good.
05:14And everybody used to say,
05:15hey, David, why are you not letting,
05:17why are you not having a go and opening up?
05:19I was saying, do you see the players I've got?
05:21So I do actually feel for a lot of the managers who,
05:24it was tough, but they were such a good side
05:28and it was great, great times to play against Pep's teams
05:31because they had so many good players.
05:35The international break just finished now.
05:37Do you think it's been too long this one?
05:39Has it felt like that?
05:40Yeah, I do.
05:41Yeah, I do.
05:42And I think generally, I think people will feel the same.
05:46But we're in a world of a much bigger Champions League.
05:49You know, we're now bigger World Cups.
05:53So a lot of things are changing
05:54and we have to be open for change
05:57if they do come from the football associations
06:01and what they choose to do.
06:03But I think generally, everybody's been a bit fed up
06:05with the length of the three-week break.
06:09With regard to the players,
06:10or Michelinco picked up an injury, didn't he?
06:12How is he?
06:13Are the other players OK?
06:14Yeah, he's got a chance for Sunday.
06:17The extra day might help.
06:19So we'll see.
06:21We've really just got the England players back today.
06:26So I just had them back for the first time.
06:28So hopefully they'll all be fit and ready to go.
06:31And Christian Norgard, we saw during the break,
06:34playing football again.
06:36Is he in contention for him?
06:39Well, we had a behind-closed-door game
06:41and he got a bit of first minutes he's had for a long time.
06:45He's making progress.
06:46I don't know if he's quite ready yet to be involved.
06:49But with our numbers being so short,
06:53it might be something I have to look at.
06:55But if I had my way,
06:57then I would certainly give him a good bit more time if I could.
07:01It seems to go further and further down the list.
07:04I'm going to ask you about Hull City because you play them on Sunday.
07:08It's the second newly promoted club with the same amount of games.
07:13They come, as Ipswich would show,
07:14they come with a threat, don't they?
07:17Hull have been great.
07:18I think it's great credit to them
07:20that the momentum you get from getting promoted
07:23is really important.
07:25They've built on it.
07:26They've added lots of good players to their group.
07:30So I don't think MD will take Hull lightly.
07:32I think they've started the season so well.
07:34We certainly won't.
07:36It's going to be a tough game,
07:37but we think we're in good form as well
07:41and we think that we can keep going
07:43and we want to keep winning.
07:47Thanks, Hull.
07:48We'll go to the Premier League studios.
07:50Just following up on that about Hull,
07:53I think a lot of people thought
07:54they might face a bit of a struggle this season.
07:57Have you been surprised by what you've seen from them?
08:00Well, I think everybody probably have,
08:02but I think they've gained confidence
08:03with their early results in the league,
08:05which has helped them.
08:06But I've got to say, watching their games,
08:08they've thoroughly deserved the results
08:10and they've been in all the games they've been playing.
08:14You mentioned the long break might be a little bit too long,
08:18but what challenges has that brought
08:20when you're going into a game after not playing for them?
08:24Well, I think just really getting ready for the restart.
08:27Again, it's nearly like another start
08:29to the league again, really.
08:32The problem is most of your players
08:34have been away playing
08:35or maybe not playing as much as you would like.
08:38There's been a group training,
08:40so it's been different from the two-week break
08:44where it's a little bit more condensed
08:46when you can have a bit of time off
08:49and then ready to go again.
08:50But this one's been a bit longer,
08:53a bit more drawn out for everybody, I think.
08:55I don't know how much of any of the games
08:57you saw over the break.
08:58James Garnham wasn't in the England squad
08:59but then was pulled up into it
09:01and was quite heavily involved.
09:03Are you hoping that he'll be in those squads
09:05from the start going forward?
09:07Do you think he deserves that?
09:08Well, I think he wasn't physically ready
09:12really to be selected
09:13and it was great that he went in
09:14because he's going to get better.
09:18He raced himself to get back from a hernia
09:21and he's just still trying to find his best form.
09:24So I think once you see him in his best form
09:27he'll be close to getting selected for England,
09:29I've got no doubt about that.
09:30You mentioned Norgard as well.
09:32I suppose it's horrible for any professional
09:34not to play for a long time.
09:37Is it an awkward one?
09:38Because you don't want to push it with him
09:41but you want him to play.
09:42Is it a tricky one to manage?
09:45Well, we want him to play obviously
09:47but he can't play injured players
09:49so we have to get them in the right condition
09:51and get them ready.
09:51So let's hope we can get Christian fit and ready.
09:56He's certainly been training.
09:58He's probably had about a week and a half
10:00on the grass now with us
10:02but he's only played 45 minutes in a game
10:05and he's had nothing else for, I don't know,
10:08maybe four months or so.
10:09I think he played the last game of the season
10:11for Arsenal against Crystal Palace for 45 minutes.
10:14He's not had much football at all
10:16so just trying to get him up to speed really.
10:19Just finally coming on the ownership situation,
10:21does it mean there's uncertainty?
10:25Looking ahead to things like January
10:26does it mean you can't really...
10:29Does it make it difficult to plan?
10:30Well, the ownership have come out and said
10:32that they'll support us.
10:35We were close to buying one or two players
10:37right at the last minute.
10:38Things didn't quite work
10:40so I hope that they'll stick to their word
10:42and back as if that's required
10:43because we, as everybody knows,
10:46we'll squad as low as it is.
10:49Thanks, Stuart.
10:50We'll go to Julia at Radio Merseyside.
10:52Hi, David.
10:54I know when you first came back
10:56and then the final game at Goodison
10:58you said it felt like the club was broken
11:00and it didn't feel like that anymore.
11:02Today the fans have woken up.
11:03There is news that the club's for sale again.
11:06Yeah.
11:06What is your message to the fans today?
11:09Because they will just want stability
11:11and it doesn't feel like it's got stability again at the minute.
11:15No, I agree with you
11:16and I think the one thing I will say is
11:18I think the fans now understand
11:22maybe what they've seen in the last few months
11:25why they thought maybe they were a bit more disappointed
11:27and maybe not getting a few more players in the window, etc.
11:32You know, us losing LNGI
11:35was disappointing from all our points of view.
11:40So, from that point of view
11:43I think they'll understand.
11:44I think they'll see it.
11:45But, you know, we'll certainly keep the faith.
11:47We'll keep banging the drum
11:51and I want Everton to get back to the levels
11:53which I said earlier where they've been before
11:55and I want people who want to come in here
11:57and understand the support
11:58understand how the club works
12:01the culture here
12:03and, you know, maybe
12:04maybe we've not really had that opportunity
12:07to explain exactly to the Freakins
12:09what we are or who we are.
12:13So, I'm hoping that
12:15the supporters will always make their voices be heard
12:17they did recently
12:19so I'm sure they'll do it again.
12:20Are you surprised as an ownership group
12:23that they didn't buy into Everton
12:25with its history and its fan base?
12:29I don't know.
12:31I'm not an expert in why
12:33or what they might do.
12:35I do know that they've got another football club
12:37which might be
12:38someone which maybe has taken more of their interest
12:40than ours.
12:41I don't know.
12:43But, I've never had any
12:45I've not had any bad news
12:48from the Freakins
12:49if you know what I mean
12:49except for the window
12:51in the main
12:52or getting close to the end of the window
12:54I should say
12:55we've not had any really
12:57disappointment
12:57we've always been quite positive
12:59if you think of
13:00how we've gone from
13:02from Goodison
13:03and how we've finished at Goodison
13:04which I've said many times
13:05how we've finished at Goodison
13:07made sure we weren't getting relegated
13:08came into the new stadium
13:10and the main
13:11if anybody had said
13:12that we were going to even have a chance
13:13have been around Europe
13:15most people would have said no chance
13:16so I think that we have moved on
13:19and I think
13:20and I hope that we're in a more stable position
13:22the club than it was then
13:27and I don't want it to feel unstable
13:31and I hope the Evertonians
13:33will see somebody who's at the helm
13:34who's going to try and keep steering the ship
13:36in the right direction
13:36and trying to keep it moving forward
13:39rather than backwards.
13:40At the end of the transfer window
13:41we spoke in here about having one striker
13:44and I said to you
13:44did you have a chance to look at anybody else
13:46and you said
13:47because we're in the season
13:48it might be difficult
13:49have you used the three week break
13:52and behind closed door game
13:53to have a look
13:54if you could use people out of position more?
13:58Well we've considered
13:58considered we're own players
13:59obviously you know
14:00people in that
14:02Brennan's been away
14:03so we couldn't
14:03we couldn't
14:04look at him
14:05or watch him
14:06Charlie Alcaraz is a consideration
14:08possibly as well
14:10you know
14:11how we could play
14:12and look
14:13there's no doubt
14:14that we're getting into
14:15a part of the season
14:16where injury suspensions
14:18are part of it
14:19you've just seen
14:20the boys been away
14:20for four games
14:22in international games
14:23there's quite a few people
14:24been injured
14:25at different clubs
14:27I don't know
14:28I just have a feeling
14:29that last year
14:29was quite a big injury
14:31season in the Premier League
14:32which I don't have stats
14:34to prove that
14:34or back it up
14:36but I just know
14:36that we had a difficult time
14:38round
14:39December, January
14:41so I've got to be mindful
14:43with the squad we've got
14:45how can I try and manage them
14:46and get people
14:48fit at the right times
14:49and this is why
14:50you know
14:51I'd like Christian back
14:52but if I could get him back
14:53for maybe a time
14:54later on in the month
14:56might be better for us
14:57the way we're going forward
14:59so I've got to try and manage
15:01what we've got
15:02and get myself ready
15:03for this busy time
15:05You mentioned James Garner
15:06was a late call up to England
15:08he'd had that surgery
15:09in the summer
15:10and I know he told you
15:11he wanted to play
15:12even though he wasn't
15:12quite 100% yet
15:13do you think this has
15:15actually helped you
15:16him going away with England
15:17to have in these games
15:18and also he was used
15:19at left back
15:19so you've used him
15:21at left back
15:21before he's played
15:22right back
15:22I think he's by the right wing
15:236 and 8
15:24will he maybe now
15:26have to move into
15:27other positions as well
15:27to help?
15:28Well I'm glad he can do the jobs
15:29because it means then
15:30it's given me some other thoughts
15:31if I have problems
15:33where I can use him
15:35so yeah
15:35but we always knew
15:37that Jimmy's flexibility
15:38was really important to us
15:39and he could fit in
15:40and I thought that
15:43I think he was named
15:44as Valverde really
15:47by Thomas Tuchel
15:48which is a great compliment
15:49because of his ability
15:51to play in several
15:52different positions
15:55but really me
15:56getting Jimmy back
15:57to where I think
15:57his peak levels are
15:58of what I'm really after
15:59and I think he's got
16:00he's getting there
16:01but I still think
16:02he's got a bit to go
16:03and I think
16:04he knows that as well
16:05Thank you
16:06good luck
16:06Thanks Julie
16:08Any further questions
16:09in the open section
16:10before we move on?
16:12No?
16:13Thank you
16:14Thanks guys
16:14Thank you
