00:00South African judge Navanatham or Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting peace and international
00:08law.
00:09The Nobel Committee says Pillay has spent decades holding states and national leaders accountable while giving hope to victims of
00:17violence and conflict.
00:21Her career spans from defending anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, to serving as a judge in major international court
00:30cases.
00:31Pillay also chaired the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded last year that Israel
00:38had committed genocide in Gaza.
00:40The Peace Prize is the fifth Nobel award announced this week, following the prizes for literature, chemistry, physics and medicine.
00:49Pillay will receive the award in Oslo on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel,
00:55who established the prize in his will.
00:58The prize carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish crowns, equivalent to around 1.2 million US dollars.
