At the Valdai Discussion Club on October 1, 2026, Vladimir Putin claimed Russian forces seized 1,301 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in September. However, independent analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) revealed that Russia actually suffered a net territorial loss of over 80 square kilometers during the month. Spearheaded by Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi in northern Donetsk and the combat debut of domestic FP-7 ballistic missiles, discover how battlefield reality diverges from Kremlin cognitive warfare.

00:01As Vladimir Putin took to the world stage at the Valdai discussion club, he had a lot that he wanted
00:06to get off his chest.
00:08This moment on October 1st was going to be the time when he would reveal that Russia had advanced far
00:13deeper into Ukraine than anybody expected.
00:16It was to be a moment of glory, a precursor to an inevitable victory.
00:21But what came out of Putin's mouth in Valdai wasn't the powerful statement he intended to make.
00:26It was delusion. A claim so idiotic that anybody with 10 minutes to spare an access to Google could disprove
00:33what Putin said.
00:34This is it for Russia. Putin has finally lost himself to the fairytale world that he has created.
00:40And that can only mean very good things for Ukraine.
00:44The claim, frankly, was ridiculous.
00:46Between a bunch of nonsense about Russia not threatening anybody when it is actively conducting hybrid operations in Europe
00:53and a ludicrous claim that Russia has never launched a first strike against an opponent, which is blatantly false,
00:59Putin delivered this little gem.
01:01Russian forces claimed 1,301 square kilometers of territory from Ukraine in September.
01:07That would suggest a massive ramping up of the Russian offensive to the tune of taking 2.5 times more
01:13territory than Russia took in previous months.
01:16Hell, it would be one of the single best months that Russia has experienced outside of its initial invasion back
01:21in February 2022.
01:22We imagined Putin standing before his sycophants, a smug look on his face as he delivered the numbers that showcase
01:28how Russia's victory will be coming soon.
01:30But Putin forgot one thing.
01:32People might actually look into his claims.
01:35And when they do, they'll see a very different picture of the battlefield than Putin is trying to paint.
01:40Wouldn't you just know it, that's exactly what has happened.
01:43We'll explain more in a moment.

01:55Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War, or ISW, took a close look at the battlefield in the
02:00wake of Putin's speech.
02:02What they found was absolutely no evidence of the advance that Putin claims to have happened.
02:07Quite the opposite, in fact.
02:09Russia didn't gain territory in September.
02:11It lost territory.
02:13A lot of territory.
02:16According to the ISW, Russia had a net loss of 80.81 square kilometers of territory in September.
02:22Much of this was fueled by Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi, which we'll be getting to in a moment.
02:27The numbers break down to 175.54 square kilometers captured by Russia in September, versus 256.35 square kilometers liberated
02:36by Ukraine.
02:37And it gets even worse when you take infiltration into account.
02:40Many of the exaggerated claims Russia makes about its territory gains come from infiltration, in which units of a couple
02:47of soldiers sneak behind the lines and establish a hidey hole.
02:51To Russia, that's enough to claim the territory is occupied.
02:54For anybody with a modicum of sense, a couple of Russians holing up and waiting to be killed is the
02:59furthest thing from control.
03:01Including these areas where Russia infiltrated but failed to establish control, the ISW says that Russia had a net territorial
03:08loss of 175.18 square kilometers in September.
03:13What we're seeing here isn't some minor discrepancy in figures.
03:16It's an outright hallucination on the part of Vladimir Putin.
03:20Somehow he can stand in front of a crowd and say, with a straight face, that Russia is gaining territory
03:25when analysis of the battlefield shows the exact opposite.
03:29The obvious question has to be asked, how?
03:32There are two possible explanations, the first being that Putin is knowingly presenting false information as accurate as part of
03:39his cognitive warfare effort.
03:41The idea behind cognitive warfare is relatively simple.
03:44It's a form of warfare that is designed to influence an opponent.
03:47Through it, Russia wants to impact the reasoning and decision-making of its enemies, from Ukraine and through to the
03:53west, so it can secure strategic objectives with less fighting.
03:56We see this from Putin's constant demands that the Donbas be ceded as part of peace talks.
04:02Almost since peace talks began, Putin has said that Ukraine must cede the Donbas, and he's made the argument that
04:08the Donbas will fall anyway.
04:09That isn't true, of course, but that isn't the point.
04:12When Putin makes claims of massive gains that never happened, such as we saw in September, he's trying to create
04:18leverage.
04:19Putin wants to trick anybody who is listening into believing that Russia's advance is unstoppable and the fall of the
04:24Donbas is inevitable.
04:26If Putin succeeds with his cognitive warfare, he could convince negotiation mediators to put pressure on Ukraine to capitulate to
04:32Russia's demands.
04:33He might even be able to stop Ukraine's allies from sending weapons and providing support.
04:38At least that's the plan. The last four and a half years show us that the plan isn't working.
04:43Still, we can look at Putin's insane September claims as another attempt to create leverage that could ultimately lead to
04:50Russia securing the Donbas without having to sacrifice even more of his soldiers.
04:54That's the charitable way to look at the situation. Putin is lying to get something that he wants.
04:59The other way to look at it is how the ISW puts it in its assessment.
05:04ISW cannot assess whether Putin knows that the figures he is presenting are false or if he is accepting fictional
05:10frontline data presented to him as the result of the culture of lying that is deeply ingrained in the Russian
05:15military command structure, the think tank declares.
05:18Translation, Putin may not have a single idea of what's really happening on the front.
05:23The reason why is that Russia's generals are lying to their leader about the gains, or otherwise, that they're making
05:28in Ukraine.
05:29We've seen this same story play out over and over again over the last year or so.
05:33If we go back to the end of 2025 and into 26, Russia was making grand claims about conquering Kopjansk,
05:40only for Ukraine to immediately prove that was nonsense.
05:43Fast forward to July and Russia's generals were telling Putin that their forces had captured the fortress-belt city of
05:48Konstantinivka.
05:50They haven't, they're not even close, but it's looking more and more likely that Putin believed it.
05:55Maybe he needs to believe something good is happening.
05:58His so-called special military operation has been a disaster for Russia, so the delusion may be preferable to the
06:04reality.
06:05Russia has been caught using artificial intelligence to fake videos of Russian flags being raised over supposedly occupied territory.
06:12Other times, the flag raising is real, but it's conducted by infiltrators who hoist a flag up, take a photo,
06:17and then run away as fast as they can before Ukraine catches them.
06:21Lie after lie is being fed to Putin, and he's swallowing every single one of them down because the alternative
06:27is too difficult for him to accept.
06:29The sycophants and lackeys he surrounds himself with are more concerned with personal glory and escaping falls from open windows
06:36for angering their boss than they are with delivering the truth.
06:38So they lie. They tell stories that leave Putin divorced from reality, leading to Russia's leader humiliating himself whenever he
06:46tries to trumpet Russian gains.
06:48Whether Putin is purposefully lying or lost in a sea of delusion and confusion, we think it's about time he
06:54received a reality check.
06:55The ISW has already delivered one.
06:58We're about to deliver several more, but before we do, this is a reminder that you're watching the military show.
07:03And this is exactly the kind of thing that we cover.
07:06If you're getting insight from our video, remember to subscribe and enable notifications so you don't miss what we have
07:11coming next.
07:13Let's return to the Donbass.
07:15It's fair to say that Putin's dream of Russia occupying that territory and bringing land that contains 70% of
07:21the estimated $14.8 trillion of Ukraine's critical mineral wealth under control has been shattered.
07:28Not that you'd know that if you listen to Putin.
07:31On October 2nd, we got another example of Putin's delusions taking hold of his crumbling mind.
07:36According to Ukra News, Putin has declared that Russia plans to occupy the remainder of Donetsk, thus taking control over
07:43the wider Donbass region by the end of 2027.
07:46That is at least a slightly more realistic deadline than the many that Putin has set before.
07:51Since the start of Russia's invasion, Putin has set at least 15 different deadlines for the collapse of the Donbass,
07:57all of which have come and gone, with Russia barely progressing toward its goal.
08:00Perhaps Putin has finally sensed that he is stretching credulity with his claims that the Donbass would fall in 2026.
08:07Or he's finally listening to the few generals who tell him that it will take longer than he wants, such
08:12as those who practically beg for the previous December 2025 deadline to be extended to the spring of 2027.
08:18Either way, Putin thinks that the Donbass will be his by the end of 2027.
08:22Now comes the reality check. The Donbass won't be Putin's by the end of 2027. At least not if Russia
08:28maintains the same pace that we're seeing now.
08:31On September 6th, the ISW assessed Russia's rate of advance in August.
08:35It found that Russia was managing to move forward at a rate of 2.36 square kilometers per day.
08:40That pace, the ISW said, Russia won't be able to capture the 19% Donetsk that remains until October 2nd,
08:472032.
08:48And here's where it gets really painful for Putin. This assessment was based on the best month that Russia had
08:54in Ukraine since April.
08:55August saw Russia claim 90.23 square kilometers of Ukraine, which was about three times more than it occupied in
09:02either June or July.
09:03So the best that Russia has done since April still leaves it with about six years to wait before Putin
09:08gets what he wants.
09:09And Russia's forces haven't even come close to the most well-defended and lethal parts of the Donetsk fortress belt
09:16yet.
09:16Here's another dose of reality for Putin. 2032 is only going to happen if Russia keeps on advancing in Donetsk.
09:23Not even that is certain.
09:25We've seen this in September, when Russia experienced the net loss of territory.
09:29This isn't the first month that this has happened to Putin's forces.
09:32Russia also recorded net losses in April and May to the tune of 116.01 square kilometers and 281.1
09:40square kilometers respectively, the ISW reveals.
09:43And somehow, it gets even worse than that.
09:45In an October 1st report, the ISW broadened its scope slightly to include March in its figures.
09:50Between March and September, Russia had a net loss of 293.59 square kilometers, which tells us that Putin's forces
09:58are actually being pushed backward.
10:00Still, Putin claims that Russia took over 1,300 square kilometers in September and that the Donbass will fall by
10:07the end of 2027.
10:09This is delusion at its most depressing.
10:11The ravings of a madman who seems to have no idea what's really happening in the war that he started.
10:16Now, we mentioned Operation Vivaldi a few moments ago.
10:19That operation is a huge part of the reason why Russia has had such a disastrous September.
10:25In an October 4th report, the Kyiv Post revealed that Ukraine has liberated around 140 square kilometers of territory through
10:32this operation alone.
10:33Much of this territory is in the northern Donetsk region.
10:36And this liberation comes in a month when Russia's casualties were a record-breaking 46,230.
10:43This is the September that Putin tried to glorify and Valdai laid bare.
10:47It can't even give you a breakdown of how many soldiers Russia sacrificed per square kilometer that it gained because
10:52Russia actively lost territory in September.
10:55Operation Vivaldi has been brilliant.
10:58Through it, Ukraine has managed to destroy a salient that had formed in Liman, reducing pressure on the fortress belt
11:03of cities in the process.
11:04Ukraine has also reversed Russian gains that date back months, forcing the Kremlin to reset every plan that it had
11:10for Donetsk in 2026.
11:12More than that, Operation Vivaldi has delivered a timely reminder to Putin that Ukraine is just as innovative and exceptional
11:19as it has always been.
11:21Ukraine has pulled off some remarkable things in this operation, perhaps the most impressive of them being the use of
11:26heavy drones to airdrop kamikaze ground robots behind enemy lines.
11:30These robots advance on Russian positions before blowing to pieces, paving the way for human infantry to advance.
11:37Other acts of brilliance include using robots to clear roads and remove landmines.
11:41We saw that in the liberated village of Chandra-Halova, where Ukraine used robots to clear 30 kilometers of road.
11:47It would have taken a pair of engineer companies a week to clear otherwise.
11:52Ukraine has even made the old new again during Operation Vivaldi.
11:55As the Center for European Policy Analysis points out, Ukraine even successfully reintroduced tanks, armored vehicles, and elements of mechanized
12:03maneuver into a battlefield increasingly dominated by drones and positional warfare.
12:08That, more than anything else, would have stung Putin if he wasn't so lost in his bull that he doesn't
12:12even know what's happening.
12:13These are the types of weapons that were supposed to win the war for Russia.
12:16Now Ukraine is using them to retake territory, turning the old methods of war into the new by combining them
12:22with all sorts of innovations.
12:23Russia simply isn't capable of doing anything like that.
12:26Yet another reality check for Putin.
12:29There can be no sighs of relief breathed in the Kremlin either, as Operation Vivaldi isn't done yet.
12:34We've seen three of a planned four phases so far.
12:37The fourth phase is coming somewhere in Donetsk very soon.
12:40Russia won't know what has hit it until it happens, as Ukraine is maintaining operational secrecy until it's achieved what
12:46it wants to achieve.
12:48Oh, and there's one more of Putin's delusions that is set to crumble into dust.
12:52Since he began his invasion, Putin has believed that Ukraine would never be able to develop ballistic missiles that could
12:57be used to strike Russia.
12:59Even as Ukraine's drones become more complex, with some starting to act much like cruise missiles, Putin fooled himself into
13:05believing that Ukrainian ballistics would never come.
13:08Wrong.
13:08A ballistic missile that can reach Moscow is on its way, and another that can strike in the occupied and
13:13border territories is already here.
13:16According to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Firepoint's FP9 ballistic missile is going to be ready to strike at some point
13:23in the fall.
13:24The missile is reported to have a range of up to 850 kilometers, and it can carry a warhead weighing
13:29up to 800 kilograms.
13:30Russia needs to get ready.
13:33Ukraine is gearing up to deliver more firepower than ever before.
13:36And the imminent arrival comes on the back of another ballistic missile, the FP7.
13:41On October 1st, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has used this missile for the very first time.
13:46He didn't confirm when or where, but that doesn't matter.
13:49What does matter is that Ukraine has a homemade ballistic missile in combat.
13:53So that's a nice little treat for Putin.
13:56Even if he finally wakes up and realizes that he's talking absolute nonsense about Russia's supposed gains in Donetsk, he
14:02still has the prospect of Ukraine having the one weapon he never thought it would have to look forward to.
14:07We wonder if Putin will be able to pretend that ballistic missiles aren't being fired at Russia when entire refineries
14:13are being blown to pieces.
14:15That would be an especially impressive example of deluge.
14:18While it boggles the mind that Putin can say the things that he says with a straight face, when all
14:22of the evidence shows the exact opposite, Ukraine won't be worried.
14:26It knows that none of the people that Putin really wants to convince are buying it anymore.
14:30That ship has long since sailed.
14:32And as long as Putin remains in his own little world of nonsense, that's a very good thing for Ukraine.
14:38Why?
14:38Well, if Putin has no idea what's actually happening on the battlefield, then Russia isn't going to be able to
14:43make the types of sweeping tactical changes that it needs to make to stop the Donetsk rot.
14:48As the Atlantic pointed out back in July, Putin doesn't even seem able to view the wider picture in Ukraine
14:53anymore.
14:54Whenever he speaks, he either parrots the nonsense that his generals tell him, or he gets bogged down in battlefield
14:59minutiae that is completely irrelevant.
15:00The outlet notes an interview conducted with Putin where he spent most of a 19-minute conversation talking about a
15:06single street in Donetsk where Russian forces had supposedly managed to gain some ground.
15:11One street.
15:12In a region where there are thousands of streets that Russia needs to conquer.
15:16That, in a nutshell, tells Ukraine everything that it needs to know about Putin's state of mind after almost five
15:21years of warfare.
15:22He is far more willing to talk about tiny and practically irrelevant stories than he is to make the changes
15:28that Russia needs him to make for it to stand any chance of winning.
15:31Even when Putin makes a grand acclaim, as he did about Russia's supposed September gains, he does nothing but reveal
15:37how little he actually knows about his own war.
15:39At this point, Putin has become a useful idiot for Ukraine. A dangerous idiot, sure, but a useful one.
15:45The usefulness comes from the fact that Putin is so blind to reality that Ukraine can use his delusion to
15:51make more gains, do more damage, and whittle away at a Russian war machine that has been faltering for years
15:57and now looks on the verge of collapse.
15:59As for the danger, that comes from where Putin's delusions could lead him.
16:03If Putin truly believes the words that are coming out of his mouth, that also means he thinks that Russia
16:08is winning in Ukraine.
16:10Unearned confidence can be borne from this falsehood, and that's a worrying prospect for NATO.
16:15A Putin who believes his own version of events in Ukraine is also a Putin who may feel as though
16:21Russia is in a position to win a war against NATO.
16:23We're already seeing Russia ramp up its hybrid warfare assaults against NATO countries.
16:28And according to Fortune, Putin is now threatening that Russia will use all its arsenal against NATO if there is
16:34a direct attack on the Russian Federation.
16:37This can only be taken as a nuclear threat.
16:40After all, most of Russia's arsenal has been destroyed in Ukraine.
16:44Putin seems to be irretrievable at this point.
16:47His delusions have taken over and he is leading Russia from one disaster to the next.
16:51Sooner or later, he is going to make a decision that cripples his military, his country and himself.
16:57The signs are there.
16:58All Ukraine has to do is keep on hitting Russia where it hurts, while allowing Putin to carry on living
17:03in his fantasy law.
17:04That's exactly what it intends to do this winter, as Ukraine prepares to turn one of Russia's greatest allies against
17:10it.
17:10General Winter is going to rain down on Russia with fury if Putin follows through on his planned attacks against
17:16Ukraine's energy infrastructure this winter.
17:18How do we know? Ukraine has said so, and you can find out what this means by watching our video.
17:23But before you move on, we hope you enjoyed this video.
