00:00It's Late Night with Sam Sheffield!
00:18Hello everyone, and welcome to Late Night with Sam Sheffield,
00:21where we see what's new in the world a little late.
00:24Before we get into tonight's interview, we have an important news piece to discuss.
00:28Last week in the recent presidential race, we got word of candidate Harvey Simpson
00:32getting in some trouble after spilling a cup of Joe on his friend Joe.
00:37Let's hope that the cup was just decaf, folks. Am I right?
00:42Apparently, the mug he was using was a red mug with a bowling ball on it.
00:45But based on his clumsiness, I don't think he's getting any strikes anytime soon.
00:50But on a real note, Joe did sustain third-degree burns
00:53and is currently at Eastside Hospital awaiting surgery. We wish him the best.
00:57Anyways, moving on to our main segment, today's special guest
01:01has taken the world by storm with this controversial Oscar nomination.
01:05That's right, it's Evan Bird!
01:16Thanks for coming, Evan.
01:17Great to be here, Sam.
01:19Evan, let's talk about this Oscar nomination.
01:22You are the youngest actor by far to ever be nominated.
01:26How does it feel to be competing with the greats?
01:29You know, I'm not going to lie, it is a little intimidating.
01:31But, you know, I feel like I deserve it and, you know, it makes me really happy that the Academy
01:36is recognizing my hard work.
01:37Well, you see, the audience, they want to know, Evan, how did you get so good at acting?
01:42You know, I'll be honest with you.
01:44I think what it really comes down to is just my natural-born talent.
01:48I mean, you do not get young actors that can do what I do every day.
01:53I mean, I think that the only way to have my level of talent in your film is to have
01:57me in the movie.
01:58So, directors, call my agent.
02:03Tell us a little bit about your new movie.
02:05Yeah, so, uh, my role in this new movie is I play a 16-year-old boy named Jeffrey.
02:11He's in a family that's having, you know, some issues with sharks.
02:15Like, there's this beach that they go to on and there's a big shark problem.
02:18It's been really affecting them.
02:19And it's, I start out in the movie so naive and such as a, you know, just very, uh, not
02:26understanding my surroundings.
02:28But it's such a coming-of-age story, you know.
02:30I really grow into my own.
02:32Uh, I get ripped.
02:34Uh, I actually beat up the sharks in one scene.
02:36Wow.
02:37Yeah, I know, right?
02:38And I had to do all the stunts for it.
02:40Wow.
02:40You did say you were fighting the sharks.
02:42Is this, like, karate, kung fu, and, like, with you doing the stunts, how does that work?
02:46Yeah, so, the, the directors, they tried to get me to go to classes, you know, to learn.
02:50Because they were like, hey, we want to get you super specific, have the right moves.
02:54And I was, I was like, come on, guys.
02:56Like, you know who you're talking to?
02:58Right, right.
02:58Like, I can, I can handle this.
03:00So, you know, I just really did some method acting and got into the role.
03:04And, uh, my moves were just so sweet.
03:07They were just so sweet.
03:08I mean, I was hitting, they wanted some karate.
03:10I gave them some karate chops.
03:12They wanted some jiu-jitsu.
03:12I did some takedowns.
03:14I remember at one point, I grabbed the fin of the shark.
03:16And I just.
03:17Wow.
03:18Yeah, really, really impressive on my part.
03:20It was, it was really good to, you know, dive into a role that required a little more.
03:26You're right, Evan.
03:28But we hear you've also got a good heart.
03:30We hear you're playing a softball charity event down at Pine Tree Park?
03:34Uh, yeah.
03:35So, it's just a small event, you know.
03:37I really want to give back to the community that's given me so much.
03:40So, you know, I picked a small park because I didn't want to be hounded by paparazzi or,
03:45or, you know, all my millions of fans.
03:46I just want it to be a small event because, you know, tomorrow, it's not about me.
03:51It's about the children.
03:52It's about the community.
03:54And I just want to give them as much as I can.
03:57I love it when an actor can also be their first community, you know, do both sides.
04:01Very inspirational.
