00:00Lovely to see you. Hello. Hello.
00:03Hi. Good evening, everyone.
00:05You are so welcome to the show.
00:07We've got some great guests for you tonight.
00:09I'll be getting them out here quicker than Richard E. Grant announcing he's a traitor.
00:14What an idiot.
00:16Anyway, singing for us later, look over there.
00:20It's the man in the mask, Orville Peck.
00:23Yeah.
00:25He'll be performing Too Little Too Late.
00:27But first on my sofa tonight, this Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor and writer shot to fame as Chef
00:33Sidney in the hit series The Bear.
00:36Her latest film is the seductive drama Clarissa. It's a first-time welcome to Iowa Deverie.
00:44There she is. Hello.
00:46Welcome, welcome.
00:48It's so nice to see you.
00:50And there you go.
00:51Iowa Deverie, everybody.
00:54This star on stage and screen has made a host of characters from a ruthless seducer and dangerous liaisons to
01:01a psychopathic killer in Con Air and himself in being John Malkovich.
01:06Now, he's earning rave reviews for his performance in Mark McDonough's Wild Horse Nine.
01:11It is a warm welcome back to the great John Malkovich!
01:17Hey!
01:21Hello, John!
01:23Welcome to see you!
01:24Oh, there you go, John!
01:26Oh, John!
01:28And we have two stars of the steamy, twisted comedy Wicker.
01:33He is the Swedish superstar who played cutthroat billionaire in Succession and a vengeance-seeking Viking in The Northman.
01:40And she is the Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy-winning star of The Favourite, Broadchurch, Fleabag and The Crown.
01:47Please welcome Alexander Skarsgård and Olivia Colman!
02:11Welcome to all four of you, lovely to see you all.
02:14Indeed.
02:14I have to say, I don't think we've...
02:16It's very rare we have such a fashionable couch.
02:19I mean...
02:20It's fashion.
02:21Fashion.
02:21Olivia Colman, not just loving fashion, you are now a model.
02:26We saw you at Paris Fashion Week.
02:29There you are.
02:33On the catwalk.
02:34How did that happen?
02:35They just called over to the blue.
02:37Yeah.
02:38I can't believe I did it.
02:39I can't believe I said yes, it's very un-me.
02:41But I did think, well, 52, grey hair, fuck it.
02:46Yes!
02:46And how nice, to be asked.
02:48And my teenage me was going, my God, do it!
02:51And did you enjoy it in any way?
02:53I really...
02:53It was terrifying.
02:55I also got lost and...
02:57It's just up and down, isn't it?
02:59No.
03:00No.
03:01So there's a...
03:01You go that way, and then the first turn is to the right,
03:05and then you go round, then there's a second...
03:07It's not...
03:08You're still lost.
03:09Yeah.
03:10And I just thought, I'll just follow this beautiful woman,
03:13Baleo, in front of me, but her legs finished about where my chin is.
03:16She just went off like that.
03:18And I was shuffling, because also my shoes were a bit big for me.
03:22Because I'm English, I went, no, great, they're fine, thank you.
03:24No, can I just say, even in the picture, they do look really big.
03:28Yeah, yeah.
03:29So my toes are like that.
03:32And I'm going, oh, gosh, she's gone, oh, she's gone.
03:35And then I looked one way that wasn't her.
03:37And then I went, where do I go?
03:39And someone in the audience went, oh, wait a minute.
03:42And then...
03:43Beautiful job, beautiful job.
03:44Thanks.
03:45That was Miu Miu.
03:46You were the Miu Miu show.
03:46And then it continues, because, Alexander, you were at the Valentino.
03:51I did not get to walk the catwalk, though.
03:53But you still work to look.
03:57And here's the thing.
03:58I was looking at this.
03:59So that's Anna Wintour, and you rarely see her smile.
04:02She's guffawing.
04:04Yeah, yeah.
04:06I've never seen her bottom teeth before.
04:08No.
04:10What's she laughing at?
04:11It's just four best friends having a good time.
04:15Casually hanging out.
04:17Beautiful.
04:17Cynthia Erivo and Colbert Bingo, very good.
04:20Meanwhile, in another part of fashion, Jon and Io, you were together at the Chanel fashion show.
04:27Yeah.
04:27This is nuts.
04:29Oh, we don't have a picture of the two of you.
04:31Everybody imagine this, but another place.
04:35It was just like that.
04:36It was just like that.
04:37Without Alexander.
04:39But did you know you were going to be there?
04:40Because you know each other, don't you?
04:41Yes.
04:42Yeah.
04:43We knew.
04:43Oh, you did know?
04:44Oh, nice.
04:45We both know each other and we knew.
04:47That you were going to be there.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Because last year you did a film together, didn't you?
04:52It's true.
04:53Yeah, Opus.
04:54Yes.
04:55Why are we being so short with our words?
04:57I know.
04:57I don't know.
04:58We got really shy all of a sudden.
05:01Yeah, he says yes.
05:02If you say so, maybe.
05:04Yeah, yes.
05:05Is there a picture?
05:06No, we did.
05:07We did the movie together.
05:08Oh, there's proof.
05:09We have a picture.
05:10We have a picture.
05:10So it happened.
05:11Now, what is the story about a bet?
05:14There was a bet on this film.
05:16There was a bet.
05:16Who bet who?
05:18Ayo got nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
05:22Yes.
05:22Yes.
05:23And we were talking about it.
05:24I was asking her about it.
05:26She didn't come up and say.
05:27Hello.
05:28Hello.
05:28Hey, Mr. Alchemist.
05:29I'm nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
05:33What do you want to say about that?
05:35We were, I was asking her about it.
05:37And she was saying, I don't want to say anything untoward, but she was kind of questioning how
05:45to deal with her parents.
05:47And if her parents could come, am I right?
05:50Yeah.
05:50Could come to the Emmys, but she was going to draw the line at the Golden Globes.
05:56Correct.
05:56I love my parents, to be clear.
05:58Yeah.
05:58To camera, I love my parents.
06:00We're good.
06:01We're good.
06:01But there are a lot.
06:02Yeah, I think if you have parents, they're a lot, and they've proven themselves to be
06:06a lot.
06:07For a while.
06:08For almost 30 years.
06:10Yeah.
06:10And I wasn't sure if I could, like, deal with it.
06:15So I wasn't sure if I was going to bring them.
06:17And John said, you are going to bring them.
06:19They will be there.
06:22And also, you were like, and I'll bet you'll win.
06:24Yeah.
06:25And I was like, okay, well, I bet you that none of that will happen.
06:29Yeah.
06:29Ten bucks.
06:30And I said, you'll collapse, you'll let him come to the Golden Globes, and you have
06:34to pay me.
06:35Ten bucks.
06:36And some months later, in Greece, I was in Greece, I got a kind of envelope with a
06:42fax in it with $10.
06:43Oh.
06:44And it said, I don't want to talk about it.
06:48And here we are.
06:50You don't have to give him $10 back.
06:52And...
06:52Was it as horrible as you imagined?
06:55The experience?
06:56It wasn't as horrible as I imagined.
06:58But really, my father became good, close, personal friends with every single white male character
07:03actor above the age of 50.
07:04Yeah.
07:05There's photos of him with Tony Shalhoub or Henry Winkler.
07:09Mickey Roar.
07:09He was taking the tour.
07:11And they were as well.
07:13Yeah.
07:13Yeah.
07:14What does that mean?
07:15Hard to say.
07:15Right.
07:16Let's get started.
07:17Olivia Colvin and Alexander Skarsgård bring us a romantic fantasy.
07:21It's called Wicker.
07:22And it's in cinemas from the 30th of October.
07:25So, no confusion.
07:27This has nothing to do with Wicker Man, which you thought that and I thought it must be...
07:32When I was sent the script, I was like, oh, Wicker Man, a horror movie, this is going
07:36to be scary.
07:36And I started reading it and I was like, oh, it's a comedy.
07:39And they're having a lot of sex.
07:42Totally.
07:42You've sold it right there.
07:44Yeah.
07:44Comedy and sex.
07:45We're in.
07:46Yeah.
07:47So, Olivia, it's based on a short story.
07:50So, tell us about these characters and the world they inhabit.
07:54So, um...
07:55You love this, but I know.
07:56Yeah, thank you.
07:57I did check on the way over.
07:59Oh, did you?
07:59Yeah, yeah.
08:00The plot.
08:00Yeah.
08:02We have previous where I forget to check what I'm here for.
08:05Um, and...
08:08So, I play the fisherwoman and, uh, and Alex is the Wicker husband and in the village...
08:18Bear with me.
08:19They can cut round this so it sounds much faster.
08:23And, uh, in the village.
08:25So, all of the women have the names of their husbands' careers.
08:28So, there's the tailor's wife, who is the glorious Elizabeth Debicki,
08:31and, uh, bottle washer's wife and baker's wife and...
08:35Anyway, so you get the idea.
08:36Yeah.
08:36Um, I am fisherwoman because I'm on my own, uh, my own career.
08:40I have my own agency.
08:41She's mocked by everybody because she's got one leg short on the other.
08:45She smells bad and she has a monobrow.
08:48And everyone, uh, just takes the piss out of her and she has had enough.
08:54And so she goes to Peter Dinklage, who is the basket weaver,
08:57and says, I'd like a husband, please.
08:59And he goes, OK.
09:02And, uh, and then in a month's time, I turn up and I think,
09:05this is going to be fun.
09:06I'm going to really, you know, just two fingers up to the village.
09:09But you turn up at the church and this guy, uh, is in Wicca.
09:12And she goes, oh, wow.
09:16Then they proceed to have a really lovely, it's a magical sort of universe
09:19and they have a wonderful, sexy time and they fall in love.
09:24Yeah.
09:25And it's kind of, I guess it's a kind of critique of traditional marriage,
09:28but also it's a kind of hymn to what a lovely relationship can be.
09:33Yes, exactly.
09:33Exactly right.
09:34Say that next time.
09:37You can have that.
09:38Can you join us on the press corps?
09:41Are you free the next month?
09:42I thought I was really struck.
09:43Listen, let's watch a clip.
09:44This is the two of you getting to know each other.
09:54And watching it, I just assumed you were probably just there in a green suit.
10:00But it's real.
10:01Yeah.
10:02So you are actually covered in wicker.
10:04Yeah.
10:06Yeah.
10:07It's, um...
10:07It seems impossible because your shoulder blades move and everything.
10:10Yeah.
10:11Was part of it like puppetry or mechanic?
10:13I saw it.
10:13It's so good.
10:14It's really good, for real.
10:15Um, was part of it like puppetry?
10:17There's one part in...
10:18I'm going to watch my tongue here because it's...
10:20I don't want to give it away.
10:22There's something in the ending that is puppeteered.
10:25Um, but it was...
10:26It's called the penis.
10:28LAUGHTER
10:30That's a spoiler!
10:32Sorry, I haven't said it.
10:34It's very finely woven.
10:35It's very finely woven.
10:40It's very finely woven.
10:56LAUGHTER
11:08Enjoy your lunch, guys.
11:10LAUGHTER
11:12It's nuts.
11:13It's so close around your eyes and everything.
11:15Yeah, yeah.
11:15And what's the mask that's done?
11:18Well...
11:19Just to not get pasta on your...
11:21To not...
11:21Yeah, so...
11:23The suit was made by Weta Workshop from New Zealand,
11:26who, um...
11:27They made this...
11:28Lord of the Rings?
11:29Oh, yeah.
11:30I've heard about it.
11:31Are you familiar with those movies?
11:32LAUGHTER
11:32Lord of the what?
11:34LAUGHTER
11:35So they have a little bit of experience,
11:38and they responded to the script and wanted to do this movie,
11:41even though it's...
11:42Our budget was slightly below Lord of the Rings.
11:44LAUGHTER
11:45But they worked on it for 18 months,
11:47a whole team of artists in New Zealand
11:49creating this amazing suit,
11:51and Sarah and Joe, two of them,
11:53came and applied it every morning and took it off
11:55and were very sweet.
11:56So at lunch, they gave me this little bib
12:00to cover my flax beard,
12:04peeled off my lips,
12:05and then I could have a lovely lunch.
12:07Yeah, it looked delicious.
12:09LAUGHTER
12:09And it was me with a great big sandwich.
12:11LAUGHTER
12:12Oh, Alex.
12:13Most days I went for liquid lunch in this restaurant
12:15because it was easier than that.
12:16We saw a hint of it there.
12:18There's quite a lot of vigorous lovemaking.
12:21You enjoy your new husband.
12:22Yes.
12:23But no splinters.
12:24No.
12:26LAUGHTER
12:29Some smoke.
12:30LAUGHTER
12:33But we should say, Olivia,
12:35you're a producer of this.
12:36You and your husband, Ed.
12:37Yes.
12:37You produced it.
12:39It's all weird kink that he has.
12:42LAUGHTER
12:42Ed was watching.
12:43I mean, I...
12:44OK.
12:45OK, OK, OK, OK.
12:47Sorry.
12:48Let's make a sequel.
12:49Let's make a sequel.
12:50Was he on set?
12:52Yeah, as much as he could be.
12:54LAUGHTER
12:55I think she was like,
12:56shouldn't you be producing and doing this stuff?
12:58Oh, we should put your hand there, right, probably?
13:00Yeah.
13:00That's what your husband sounds like, right?
13:02Yeah.
13:03Yeah.
13:06And after takes and things, would he discuss things with him?
13:10Would he give you notes?
13:11Absolutely not.
13:12No, we've learnt very early on, he is not allowed to give me acting notes.
13:16OK.
13:17That goes down like a cup of cold sick.
13:19LAUGHTER
13:21Once done, never again.
13:22Yeah, he tried one.
13:23OK.
13:24Yeah.
13:24It was not appreciated.
13:25He gave me he loved making notes, so...
13:28LAUGHTER
13:29She likes it when you're getting it.
13:32LAUGHTER
13:33Thanks, Ed, thanks.
13:34You're welcome.
13:36Can I...?
13:37John, there's a question.
13:38What was the note that provoked you?
13:41Well, it was in the early days, actually, when auditioning, and I said,
13:45can you just record me for this?
13:47You have to audition and send tapes in.
13:48And he recorded it, and then he went, I was just wondering if you should...
13:51I said, don't you fucking dare.
13:53LAUGHTER
13:55LAUGHTER
13:56That's it.
13:57That's it.
13:57I mean, I'm not really feeling it.
13:59LAUGHTER
14:00And, just back to Wicker, I just want to...
14:03It's such a beautifully designed film and everything.
14:04Did you walk away with loads of, kind of, baskets and beautiful things?
14:10LAUGHTER
14:10Er...
14:11No, it's full of baskets.
14:13It is.
14:13Yeah.
14:13Well, there are some maid's eggs, which are the little things that shake.
14:18Yes, yeah, yeah.
14:18I've got one of those on my desk.
14:21Are they a real thing?
14:22Are they traditional or...?
14:23No.
14:23Oh, OK.
14:23It's pretend.
14:24OK.
14:25LAUGHTER
14:26Send me the penis when it comes to me.
14:30LAUGHTER
14:34So, you got an egg.
14:35Did you get anything?
14:36I did, yeah.
14:37I...
14:38So, this suit was, like I said, exquisite.
14:41And, um...
14:42I...
14:43The best part of the whole suit were the nipples.
14:46They were extraordinary.
14:48It's...
14:49The craftsmanship.
14:50You saw them, you felt them, you squeezed them.
14:52There was a debate about the nipples.
14:54And...
14:55Every day when I was wearing them, putting them on,
14:58you screwed them on.
15:00Um...
15:01Screw...
15:01I was thinking of you, Grant.
15:03Were you...?
15:04LAUGHTER
15:05For some...
15:06I don't know.
15:06Very, very...
15:08Bizarre reason.
15:08Bizarre reason.
15:09And I have them here today, and I want to give them to you.
15:12No!
15:13No.
15:13I have my nipples here.
15:16Oh, my God!
15:17Are you serious?
15:18Oh, my God!
15:19It's like a proposal!
15:21And it says on the box, Weta Workshop, the legendary Weta Workshop,
15:26they've made these, and...
15:27No, seriously, are these really for me?
15:28Yeah, they are.
15:29You're taking them?
15:29Yeah.
15:30Thank you so much!
15:31Wow!
15:32Yeah!
15:33Oh!
15:37Oh!
15:39They're...
15:41They're stiff.
15:42I'm just going to show them to the camera.
15:44I won't say what they look like.
15:46LAUGHTER
15:46Oh, sure.
15:49Well...
15:51They're beautiful.
15:54No, I could make them earrings.
15:55Oh, no, I touched them.
15:56LAUGHTER
15:57They're lovely.
15:58I'll help you.
15:59After the show, I'll help you apply them.
16:01Are they really...
16:01Are they the ones you actually use?
16:03Yeah.
16:03Yeah.
16:04That's amazing.
16:04Oh, and they've got little studs and things.
16:06Yeah.
16:07You can put them on your shirt now.
16:09No, no.
16:09No, no.
16:10LAUGHTER
16:11No, OK.
16:13Thank you very much.
16:15That's absolutely gorgeous.
16:16Wicker.
16:17It hits cinemas in two weeks.
16:19Olivia and Alexander, everybody.
16:21Thank you so much.
16:22It's so lovely.
16:23Thank God.
16:24I could have done more.
16:28Now, John Malthovich brings us Martin McDonagh's latest film.
16:31It's a really funny black comedy.
16:33It's called Wild Horse Nine.
16:35It's in cinemas on the 4th of November.
16:39I've seen it.
16:39It's so good.
16:40Have you seen it?
16:41I've seen it, yeah.
16:42It's great, isn't it?
16:43It's amazing.
16:43And he's so good in it.
16:44Amazing in it.
16:45Yeah.
16:45We've said the important stuff now.
16:47You're really good in it.
16:48Mm-hm.
16:49And this is from Martin McDonagh, who did In Bruges and Banshee's
16:52Finish Era and Three Billboards and things.
16:54So, tell us about it.
16:55It's set in the 70s and it is based loosely on some real events.
17:00Yes.
17:01First, I want to say, I just saw the poster and I'm wearing a hat like this, but not because
17:07I wear a hat like this in the movie, but because I knocked a hole in my head in Mexico
17:13City.
17:13So, I'm kind of covering it up so you don't have to look at it.
17:17Now...
17:18You're reviewing the hole in your head.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Showing your brain.
17:21Yeah.
17:22We don't have to look at it anymore.
17:24So, it's loosely based on real events?
17:27Yes.
17:28It has two kind of bookend parts.
17:30One is the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the American president, on November 2nd, 1963.
17:38And the other is the coup against the democratically, as they say, elected leader of Chile, Salvador
17:49Allende, on September 11th, 1973.
17:53So, that's when the American CIA, among others, supported a coup against Salvador Allende, which
18:02ended in his death.
18:03So, Martin McDonough wrote this film about two CIA guys who go to Chile to destabilise
18:15their democracy.
18:16So, I think that's the scene we're looking at.
18:19Oh, yes.
18:20Why don't we look at Cliff and then we'll talk some more.
18:22This is you at San Marquill in the airport in Chile.
18:25You're on your way to Easter Island.
18:27We'll talk some more about that in a minute.
18:29Yeah.
18:29And you are being a little loose-lipped.
18:39And I was talking to you earlier about...
18:41So, your character wants to go to Easter Island.
18:44And Easter Island is a place that we haven't really seen on film before?
18:49I think there was one film many years ago.
18:53I think it was a little seen, but it's very rarely seen.
18:59Yeah.
18:59The heads, they have the giant heads there and they're quite iconic and often seen in photographs,
19:06etc.
19:06But almost no shooting is done there.
19:10And the wild horse of the title, I mean, are the wild horses...
19:14They just run around everywhere.
19:16They are?
19:16Wild horses, wild cows, wild dogs.
19:19Yeah.
19:20And how long are you there for?
19:21About two and a half months.
19:23Wow.
19:24Wow.
19:24I can't imagine many people have stayed on Easter Island for two and a half months.
19:27No.
19:28That's a pass.
19:28Are there any restaurants?
19:30There are a couple, yeah.
19:32I mean, sort of depends how one defines restaurants, but there are a couple.
19:38And the people are very nice and we stayed at a very nice hotel and lovely people and it
19:44was no problem.
19:46You know, Martin is a great writer, Martin McDonough, and great writing kind of demands
19:55a lot of work, a certain level of work, which actors all of us like to do.
20:00It doesn't happen much because most of the things you read are quite a distance from great.
20:07But when it is, then you want to work.
20:12Yeah.
20:12And so mostly we just worked all the time.
20:15Thankfully, because there isn't a whole lot to do.
20:18You and Sam Rockwell are great and it's great to see you reunited with Steve Buscemi,
20:22who we all remember the two of you together in Con Air.
20:27One of the great art films of all time.
20:37It is, it's one of your most famous movies.
20:40It's throbbing with action and adrenaline.
20:43And adrenaline.
20:43Yeah.
20:44That's it, go.
20:45Yeah.
20:45I might have said that.
20:46Cyrus the Virus.
20:47Yeah, absolutely.
20:48Cyrus the Virus.
20:50Oh, wow.
20:50And did you have fun making it?
20:52Great fun because our theatre, Steppenwolf, which is how he spent many, many years just
20:58doing that, was very female oriented, although our plays were supposed to be very macho and
21:07very violent.
21:08They were, I think, referring to the women in our theatre more than the men.
21:14Anyway, so I'd never been around a kind of group of men like that.
21:20And some of them are convicts.
21:23Some of them were the lightweight boxing champions of San Quentin Prison.
21:30Some of them were professional football players, professional hockey enforcers.
21:38Um, so it, it was really like, I'd never done something with a group of people that you
21:47wouldn't let outside of your, they could be in your yard in theory, but not really in
21:54your house.
21:55Um, so it was just, for me it was hilarious.
22:00I loved it.
22:01And that scene, I believe, is from this scene where we had a big safety meeting and, uh,
22:11Andy Samberg, the American actor and comedian who spent years at Saturday Night Live and did
22:17great music videos such as Jizzed In My Pants, et cetera.
22:23He did one, uh, very touching.
22:27Yeah.
22:27Um, uh.
22:29You had my Jizzed.
22:30Yeah.
22:30And, uh, Dick in a Box, of course, we shouldn't forget also.
22:34Oh, yeah.
22:35Um, he did one called Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions, and which featured this explosion
22:42in Con Air.
22:43Oh, there you are.
22:44Yeah.
22:45And see, you can't look back.
22:46They can look back because they're not cool.
22:49But I can't look back.
22:51You can't.
22:52Yeah.
22:52But as we were setting up, the, the safety guy goes through all these things and he basically
22:58says, okay, so what's gonna happen is at, at eight seconds you have to be X number of
23:06meters away from your starting point.
23:09At 20 seconds you have to be X number of meters away.
23:13And it went on up to kind of 40, 50 seconds.
23:16And, um, you know, that's kind of a lot of counting for some people in that cast.
23:25And, uh, so, and to prove the point, and I'm not, nobody calls me for, like, with algebra
23:36questions.
23:37Um, I flung to two years of algebra.
23:40The teacher called me up, said I was in school with your parents.
23:44They're both very bright.
23:45What happened to you?
23:47Um, so anyway, he says we have to do this and we have to have somebody to count out the
23:54number of feet and the number of seconds.
23:55So they have to kind of put those two ideas together.
24:00So everybody in that group appointed me, which is like, that's not a good idea.
24:07But then when I looked around, I thought, yeah, I probably am the only one who has a chance
24:14of counting that high and counting meters.
24:20I mean, I don't say I could do it readily, but it's possible.
24:25So, yeah.
24:25And the bottom line, nobody died.
24:27Nobody died.
24:28Nobody died.
24:28So it's all good.
24:30Very quickly, we've got to mention another movie you're in.
24:33It's out right now.
24:34It's called The Yellow Tie.
24:37Yes.
24:37Yeah.
24:37There was a very famous conductor, Romanian conductor, uh, incredible presence called
24:45Sergio Celebidake.
24:46And, uh, he was a fantastic conductor who had a very fascinating life, most especially because
24:53he refused to let his concerts be recorded.
24:58Um, a beautiful performance by that young man at the bottom called Ben Schnetzer.
25:06And I play him when he's a, you know, a vieux schnuck, a geezer.
25:11A little older.
25:12Yeah.
25:13That is in cinemas now.
25:14And don't forget, you can see John in Wild Horse 9 from the 4th of November.
25:19John Malkovich, everybody!
25:21All right.
25:26Iowa Devery is up.
25:28Her new film is Clarissa.
25:30It's a beautiful adaptation of the Virginia Woolf novel Mrs. Dalloway.
25:34I mean, it's more than an adaptation, really, isn't it?
25:37Yeah.
25:38I feel like Livia now.
25:40I'm like, yes, it is.
25:42I was in the movie.
25:43I don't know how.
25:44And the movie has a plot.
25:45No.
25:45Um, yeah, it's, uh, it is an adaptation, but also an amazing undertaking, uh, by the
25:52movie.
25:52I think these two brothers, uh, Chuka and Arya Seri.
25:55And it sets the novel or reimagines it in, uh, Nigeria, uh, moving between present day,
26:02uh, where the Mrs. Dalloway character, Clarissa, is played by Sofio Canedo, who is, like, unbelievable
26:09in it.
26:10Yeah.
26:10Her with David Oyelowo, who's also famous.
26:13Wow.
26:13Just brilliant in it.
26:14Uh, and then the past, which takes place, uh, in the nineties, uh, after the civil war
26:21in, uh, Delta State, where if you're familiar with, uh, Nigerian history in that region, there's
26:28a lot of really naughty, complicated stuff geopolitically.
26:32Um, and so, yeah, it puts us there.
26:35And there we are.
26:36It has a gorgeous energy.
26:37I know.
26:37We've got a clip.
26:38Uh, this is you as young Sally, Clarissa's friend, and, uh, you're speaking your mind.
26:45That's amazing.
26:46That's amazing.
26:47That's amazing.
26:48Not right.
26:49Yes.
26:50Are you complimenting on her accent?
26:51Great accent.
26:52A very good accent, wasn't it?
26:53Yeah.
26:53Yeah.
26:53Have you, have you done the full English before?
26:55I did a sort of semi-English, uh, my friend Rachel Sennett has a show on HBO called I Love
27:01L.A., and I also play, I don't know, there's some reason when I, when I play British, I go
27:05really, this is like post-Watershed, right?
27:08You can, you can swear?
27:09Yeah.
27:09I get really, like, bitchy when I, when I go British, for some reason.
27:12I don't know why.
27:13People are hoping for more than bitchy.
27:14Sorry.
27:16They were like, post-Watershed?
27:18Whatcha gonna say?
27:20Bitchy.
27:21Bitchy.
27:23But yeah, I do, I do.
27:26Um, yeah, but, so that one was kind of like a weird psycho, like, she's a real fashion
27:31freak, and, uh...
27:32This is in I Love L.A.
27:33This is in I Love L.A., sorry.
27:36We experienced something different from that clip.
27:38Um, yeah, and then this, um, Nikki Amuka-Bird, amazing actress, plays the older version of
27:44Sally, and so it's sort of an amalgamation of her and then what the brothers sound like
27:50to me, and also their sister, who was really amazing and sent me, she would, like, they
27:54wrote out paragraphs of just random texts and she would send me voice notes being like,
27:59Yeah.
27:59Hello, I'm here today at the grocery store.
28:02And you'd be like, I would just be listening to that in between takes and then, like, running
28:06back and forth, yeah.
28:07But of course you have spent time here, because you've just finished, have you just finished
28:10filming Prodigy?
28:11No, a bit ago, but I did, we finished filming together.
28:15Mm-hm.
28:15Because, John, this is a new show on Apple TV, it's called Prodigies, with the lovely Will
28:20Sharp.
28:20Yes.
28:20And, uh, John's in it.
28:22Yes.
28:22Yeah.
28:22Yeah.
28:23Who do you play John?
28:24I play his father.
28:27Will Sharp wrote this show.
28:28Yeah, he did.
28:29So, it's such a great premise.
28:31Yeah.
28:32Tell us the...
28:32It's really fun.
28:33We play these two former child geniuses, who then in our adulthood, I think, find ourselves
28:41faced with a lot of the expectation that we had when we were younger, that maybe we didn't
28:46necessarily live up to in different ways, and we've been together since we were really
28:50young.
28:51Like, in a relationship?
28:52In a relationship.
28:53Yes, yes.
28:53Like, we were those kind of kids who were like, what's well, we're married, and then
28:58we're sort of like, OK, and now we're 32, and are we married?
29:02Um, and, yeah, and then we're sort of like, do we want to do this, do we not?
29:08And it's very fun, and there's a really great cast, including John, um...
29:13And lots of great British people, including Olivia.
29:15Yes.
29:16Why in it?
29:16No, you're not in it.
29:17All right.
29:20You thought for a second.
29:22I also thought for a second.
29:24Um, including Graham Norton, including Olivia.
29:26Um, including all of you.
29:28No one read the script.
29:29I didn't even know you were in it.
29:31Uh, that will be on Apple TV from the 10th of February.
29:35Yeah.
29:35But of course, I'm going to let you leave without mentioning the bear.
29:38Oh, sure.
29:39Uh, so it's done, the bear.
29:41It's done.
29:41The bear is over.
29:42Over.
29:43Yeah.
29:43They started to whoop, and then they got really...
29:45They were going, like, whoo-hoo!
29:47Uh, yeah, it's over.
29:48Uh, do you think it would ever come back?
29:50You know the way, like, do you think there'll be a reunion, or...?
29:54Um, yeah.
29:54Who knows?
29:55No.
29:55No.
29:57No.
29:58But it's nice.
29:59We had a really nice run, and I think we got to go out, like, the way that makes us
30:05all
30:05really happy.
30:06And life-changing for you.
30:07Um, what happened?
30:08I was like, no, not really.
30:10No?
30:10No?
30:10No, yeah, completely, obviously.
30:12Yeah, yeah.
30:12Completely life-changing, and I got to work with, like, the best people ever, and work with
30:17people, for example, like Olivia, who that just would have never...
30:21Olivia really was in it.
30:22She really was!
30:23There she is!
30:24There's a photo to prove it.
30:26Yes?
30:27Uh, who did...
30:28Who did you play Olivia?
30:29Chef Terry.
30:31Chef Terry!
30:32Chef Terry!
30:33Chef Terry!
30:35I got you.
30:36I got you.
30:37I got you.
30:38Well remembered.
30:42Because...
30:42I wasn't on that show, was I?
30:43Um, no.
30:45No.
30:45You were on Succession.
30:46You were on Succession, yeah.
30:47That's a different show with different angry white people.
30:50Okay, yeah.
30:51I didn't really know what to do, so...
30:53Tell me this.
30:54You took it very seriously.
30:56You properly learned how to cook, right?
30:58I mean, I hope so.
30:59I think...
31:00I think I tried to do that, yeah.
31:02But, like, you cooked at home for your friends?
31:03Yeah, I did home for friends.
31:04We went to culinary school.
31:06We, like, shadowed...
31:07Yeah, we shadowed a bunch of chefs.
31:08I shadowed a lot of female chefs, specifically.
31:11Um...
31:12And that's...
31:12I think that's a good skill to learn, because then you have that forever.
31:14It's a good skill to learn.
31:15Now, and also, it's an amazing skill because we go into restaurants and people are like,
31:19you're one of us, you know?
31:20And I'm like, yeah!
31:21Can I...
31:22Can I bring in five friends?
31:25Um...
31:25So, ideally, the next show I do will be about an air fryer factory.
31:30LAUGHTER
31:32Um...
31:33But, yeah, it's...
31:34It was...
31:34It was a fun skill.
31:35It was helpful.
31:35Did Chef Terry learn how to do things?
31:39Um...
31:39LAUGHTER
31:41Yes.
31:42Yes.
31:42She's still lying about not being in it.
31:45Uh...
31:46Oh, no, they...
31:47Actually...
31:48Yes!
31:49So, I...
31:50In the script, I was meant to be cutting swirls on top of a mushroom.
31:55Oh, yes.
31:55And they did actually have a go.
31:56Really hard.
31:57It sounds hard.
31:58Yeah.
31:59And then I got there and they said it was probably too hard, so we're just going to get you
32:01peeling mushrooms.
32:03LAUGHTER
32:05That was it?
32:06Yeah.
32:06Because you don't really prepare-prepare.
32:08You don't, like...
32:09Well, this does make me sound bad, but, um...
32:12No idea.
32:12Uh...
32:13Thanks.
32:15John Malkovich said it's fine.
32:16Yeah.
32:18Um...
32:18I do think...
32:20Uh...
32:21I...
32:21If it's in the script and the script is good, I feel like it's...
32:24It's there.
32:25Obviously, if I had to ride a horse, I'd learn to ride a horse.
32:28Obviously.
32:29You know, you don't want to sit on a horse the wrong way round.
32:31LAUGHTER
32:32It would take audiences out of it.
32:34Yes.
32:35Yeah!
32:36But if it's something...
32:36Fantastic performance.
32:38So, for some reason, she was hugging the horse from underneath.
32:40LAUGHTER
32:42So, if it requires preparation, I'll obviously do it.
32:45Of course.
32:46Alexander, I imagine you are prepper.
32:49You like going deep.
32:50Do you?
32:53LAUGHTER
32:56Oh, absolutely.
32:59APPLAUSE
32:59John!
33:01APPLAUSE
33:03Puppeteering.
33:04Are you cracking?
33:04Are you cracking?
33:05I was just going to say, when you're talking about preparation, like, for instance, you would learn how to ride
33:11a horse or a wicker penis.
33:14LAUGHTER
33:16LAUGHTER
33:17The wicker penis is really staged with John.
33:20LAUGHTER
33:21Next time you're both on, you know what to bring.
33:23And the nipples.
33:24I gave you the nipples, I'm going to give John the penis.
33:27LAUGHTER
33:28LAUGHTER
33:28I'm wearing it as a necklace.
33:29Yeah.
33:30LAUGHTER
33:31It probably would.
33:32Yeah.
33:33It would look really good.
33:34But do you like learning things?
33:36Do you...?
33:37Uh...
33:37Not really.
33:38I feel like I know everything already.
33:40LAUGHTER
33:41So I don't feel the need to...
33:44No, but seriously, I'm also inherently lazy.
33:46So if I can have someone else do it for me, then I'll...
33:50I'll be in my trailer drinking a cappuccino.
33:53LAUGHTER
33:53And, John, your first big movie, you were Oscar-nominated for Places in the Heart.
33:58Am I right that you didn't really...
34:00Because they wanted you to prepare a lot for that, right?
34:02Mm-hm.
34:02Because you were playing blind man.
34:04Yes.
34:04They sent me every day to the lighthouse for the blind in...
34:09We were shooting in Texas, in near...
34:12Not so far from Dallas, Texas.
34:14And I did go there once, and...
34:18The...
34:20I mean, the people are blind, so...
34:22It's like there's not much you can do.
34:26LAUGHTER
34:28LAUGHTER
34:29No way.
34:31LAUGHTER
34:31What I mean is, like, what are you going to do?
34:36LAUGHTER
34:37And...
34:38What did they want you to do?
34:39Learn how to do braille?
34:40Well, that was one thing.
34:43LAUGHTER
34:43LAUGHTER
34:44No, but...
34:46Wait...
34:47Do you know any...?
34:48I know what you're trying to say, Tom, yes.
34:51OK.
34:51But I'm not doing it.
34:53LAUGHTER
34:54So...
34:55So...
34:55I said, just call them.
34:58I don't know who I meant by them.
35:00LAUGHTER
35:01But I just said, just call them and see if you, like, read it from up to down,
35:05or left to right, or right to left, and then you go like this,
35:09and, you know, do it like that.
35:10Yeah.
35:10Because that's how I kind of did everything in my whole life.
35:14But then, wait, plot twist, you did learn a skill for places in the heart.
35:20Yeah.
35:21But that, as Olivia said, practical things outside of...
35:25We won't talk about it anymore.
35:27LAUGHTER
35:28Practical things, this character caned chairs for...
35:34..to make his way in the world.
35:36Yeah.
35:36So I learned how to do that, and when my grandmother went with my mother
35:42to see it at the cinema 100 miles away,
35:47as they were driving back home, they'd gotten to kind of mile 80,
35:51and my grandmother said,
35:54well, I saw him start caning a chair,
35:57but I never saw him finish one.
36:01LAUGHTER
36:01So, uh, didn't, you know...
36:05Could you have made the wicker man?
36:07I was just thinking the same way.
36:08Ooh!
36:09You go to trial when you get home.
36:10I think I could have made some...
36:11LAUGHTER
36:12I think I could have made some...
36:13LAUGHTER
36:15I smell a sequel!
36:17LAUGHTER
36:21But was it really wicker, or...?
36:24LAUGHTER
36:24You're getting to work tonight.
36:26You're getting to work tonight.
36:28LAUGHTER
36:28Because it looks like leather.
36:31LAUGHTER
36:33It was proper wicker, yeah.
36:34Yeah.
36:35Wicker.
36:36But that wasn't, like...
36:37So you know, you know this scrap.
36:38You know how to do this.
36:39I did.
36:40Yeah.
36:40You did.
36:41I did.
36:42And he'll be taking it up again shortly, I imagine.
36:45And, right, it is time for music.
36:47This country singer-songwriter has collaborated with some of the industry's biggest names,
36:52including Shania Twain, Kylie and Elton John.
36:54Here performing Too Little Too Late from his latest album Mule,
36:58it is Orval Peck!

37:29You're back again.

40:12Thank you so much.
40:27Thank you so much for that performance.
40:30Of course.
40:31If people aren't familiar with you, Orville, we should say the mask stays on, right?
40:35It stays on, always, yeah.
40:36OK.
40:37And is it a kind of a seer, I don't want to be seer, or is it, is it, it's
40:43a more to it?
40:43It's sort of, I mean, I didn't start with it being something like anonymous, I just,
40:48I grew up loving country and I looked at the landscape of country music when I started
40:52like 10 years ago and I just thought that there was so little creativity going on in
40:56terms of something theatrical to add to, you know, like the storytelling and the authenticity.
41:01So I wanted that crossroads of like, you know, very vulnerable, authentic songwriting,
41:06but something like, you know, artistic combined with that.
41:09Yeah.
41:10Oh, wow.
41:10Well, it's working for you, I tell you.
41:12And, uh, listen, we should say that song is from the album Mule, which is currently the
41:19number one album in the country charts right now.
41:22Yeah!
41:27So talk to us about the title, because I imagine it was about like, stubborn ass out,
41:31but it's not that.
41:32Sure, there's part maybe that, like, I always name my albums horse-related things, I'm like
41:36a horse girl kind of, you know, um, and so, uh, this one was, well, it's, it's a, it's
41:43a chronological timeline, order of songs of the year I got sober, 2023, I went to rehab
41:48and lost my mind for a while.
41:49And so, uh, I was thinking of what horse might represent that.
41:53And so a mule felt right.
41:54Cause it's like stubborn.
41:56It's kind of a cross between a horse and a donkey.
41:59It's trapped in its own way.
42:00And, uh, it also has a, you know, an affiliation with drug trafficking, which kind of made sense
42:04for the content.
42:06Oh, okay.
42:07Yeah.
42:08I forgot, I forgot that mules are famously druggy.
42:10Yeah.
42:11Famously druggy.
42:12Yeah.
42:12Yeah.
42:13Yeah.
42:13I didn't put that together.
42:14Um, so it, is this the first album you've done like this where it's kind of a linear story?
42:19Yeah.
42:19Yeah, for sure.
42:20It was, um, I don't know.
42:21It was just like a crazy year for me.
42:23A lot changed and I just wanted to kind of, if people wanted to listen to it in that way,
42:27I wanted them to kind of go on the journey like that.
42:29Yeah.
42:30And, uh, Orville, not just a new album, uh, Orville Beck's in a movie.
42:34Yes, he is.
42:35It's true, yeah.
42:36You're in, uh, Street Fighter.
42:38I am.
42:38Uh, yeah.
42:39You are one of the Street Fighters.
42:40I love Kitau.
42:41Yeah.
42:41Yeah, there he is.
42:43There I am.
42:43Still got a mask.
42:44Exactly, that was real.
42:45There's a real connection.
42:47Oh, okay.
42:47Oh, my, my, my friend Kitau Sakurai directed the movie.
42:50He's the best.
42:50Oh.
42:50Amazing, amazing.
42:51Oh, wow.
42:52So cool.
42:52Yep.
42:53Dinner reservation for, uh, a deep period.
42:55Were you a boxer?
42:58Uh, I was a boxer at one point, yeah.
43:01Why, uh, why do you ask?
43:03Well, I mean, I know a lot about you, Orville.
43:05I mean...
43:07What else have I forgotten when I was drinking?
43:09What do you mean?
43:10We DM each other.
43:11I found out a lot.
43:12I found out a lot, yeah.
43:13Oh, my God.
43:14Okay, yes.
43:14Oh, yeah.
43:15But I did box, you know, like, I mean, not in a serious way, but I did learn martial arts
43:21for Street Fighter.
43:22I got to train for, like, six months.
43:23And it was while I was doing Broadway, I was the MC in Cabaret on Broadway at the same time.
43:27And so I was doing, like, 16-hour days training.
43:31Like, it was insane.
43:31But it was so much fun.
43:33Well, listen, it's so nice to have you on the show.
43:35Lovely to meet you.
43:36You too.
43:36Good luck with the album.
43:37Thank you for that performance.
43:38Orville Peck, everybody!
43:44Right, that is nearly it where we go.
43:47Just time for a quick visit to the big red chair.
43:48Who do we have?
43:49Hello.
43:50Hi.
43:50You look flippin'.
43:52Okay.
43:53What's your name?
43:54Holly.
43:55Holly, lovely.
43:55And where are you from, Holly?
43:57Sweden, actually.
43:58Oh, my goodness.
43:59Hey, does your story involve anyone on the couch?
44:02Yes, it does.
44:03Oh!
44:05Start talking, Holly.
44:06Orville!
44:08So, this story involves me as a baby, and my mum, Alexander, and his childhood friend, Linda Adeteg.
44:15Um, so, we were in...
44:18Am I your father?
44:21That's my daughter!
44:24So, we were in Linda's apartment in Gothenburg, like, 25 years ago.
44:29And my mum was holding me, and she was desperate for a pee.
44:31But you were in the shower, taking up all the time.
44:34Uh, and then when you came out, she ran in, just handed me to you, when you just had a
44:40towel around your waist, and you were just bare-chested straight out of the shower.
44:44So, yeah, you've held me as a baby.
44:47Oh!
44:51That is crazy.
44:53I breastfed her!
44:55With my wicker nipples!
44:57Yeah.
44:58That's a wicker for doing your teeth.
45:00Yeah.
45:00And that is the video we've got time for.
45:01Please say thank you to all of our guests.
