00:00Do we have a serial killer in Lansing?
00:02A serial killer in Michigan? Maybe. Lansing police are investigating a series of
00:06eerily similar homicides. Over the past year, five people were discovered either dead or dying along
00:12a small, roughly one-mile stretch of a river trail in the capital city. The first incident
00:17happened around this time last year. The second and third attacks were in July, the fourth and
00:21fifth in August. Here's why authorities believe these killings may be connected. According to
00:26the chief of police, all of the victims were homeless, white males, killed overnight or in
00:31the early morning hours, located in the same area, and discovered laying down. Authorities say that
00:35last bit indicates the victims may have been sleeping when they were attacked. The victim
00:39ages range from early 20s to 70s. And here is where things get a little confusing. Four of the
00:45men were killed by some sort of blunt force trauma to the head. One, however, was stabbed. Full reports
00:51on the bodies from the medical examiner haven't been completed. A suspect, 23-year-old Edward Smith,
00:56is currently in custody for the stabbing. Whether Smith is connected to the other four killings?
01:01Well, law enforcement was careful with their answer. That is a challenging question to answer.
01:05A few of the victims were found alive but died days or a week later from their injuries. So the
01:10MO seems to be that the victims are beaten bloody and left for dead by their attacker, sometimes still
01:14breathing.
