00:00Meta is building one of the world's biggest internet networks, at the bottom of the ocean.
00:05The 4,300 mile project is called Petal, and it will connect the US and France.
00:10Meta says it will carry one petabit of data per second,
00:13enough bandwidth for about three quarters of the world to stream music at once.
00:17The company has spent the past decade building its underwater sea cable network,
00:21and has invested in more than 20 projects.
00:24Its biggest initiative so far is Project Waterworth,
00:27which will stretch more than 31,000 miles, longer than the Earth's circumference.
00:32But why does Meta need this underwater empire?
00:35AI tools, apps, and platforms all depend on moving enormous volumes of data
00:39between Meta's data centers and its users around the world.
00:43So its next big AI bet may be under the sea.
