00:10good evening and welcome tonight we will be going over the history and geography of
00:21Corrientes in Argentina. Corrientes is located in a region of Argentina known as the Argentine
00:40Mesopotamia which is a very apt name you can see here. Mesopotamia of course means the land between
00:48two rivers and this isn't the Tigris and Euphrates this is the Parna River and the Uruguay River
01:00so it's almost like a almost like an island here these very large rivers around it with the city
01:10of Corrientes located here right on kind of like right by where the Paraguay River meets the Parna
01:18River which I think we talked a lot about when we talked about the Chaco province a few months ago
01:26the geography of Corrientes province is dominated by the Ibera wetlands which you can see all these
01:33little blue dots there means wetlands so all this area here is definitely around here are the Ibera
01:44wetlands it's a very marshy place lots of farmland lots of cattle of course it is Argentina that's
01:53the sound of my cat doing something I don't know what he's doing he's my manager he's allowed to do
01:59whatever he wants while I film yeah Corrientes also borders three countries I mean if you count the
02:09river here it's a border with Paraguay there's lots of little islands that Paraguay and Argentina
02:18share back and forth along the river there because it's very wide river and we'll talk about the big
02:23dam over here when we look on Google Earth it also has a border along the rivers here with Brazil
02:31and a little border here with Uruguay
02:37Corrientes province is in the city of Corrientes mostly are best known for its carnival one of the
02:47largest in Argentina and also for the Chama May style of music and dance
02:56I do have a brief little history for you I felt like when I was researching history that
03:03I was like missing something I just had that feeling so I'm gonna go over the history that I found
03:09and my wonderful wonderful Argentinian viewers are gonna let us know in the comments
03:15if I missed something if I if I just didn't something didn't come up in the research I don't
03:21know I just had that feeling you know and I kept searching and nope but okay we'll see we'll see
03:28we'll see of course there is a very prominent indigenous history in this area here there are
03:33many different groups most notably for our history would be the Guarani
03:41the city of Corrientes was founded in 1588 there had previously of course been indigenous settlements
03:48there and a little outpost from the early European explorers here but the official town was founded
03:57then as a halfway point between Buenos Aires down here on the Rio de la Plata and I think Asunción
04:09at the time so you could go down the river and stop here and they keep going down until you
04:16get to Buenos Aires
04:19there is a very prominent Jesuit population here who created little um gosh I just blanked on the word for
04:30it
04:30Estancias like a large property where there was of course their church but also a farm homes for the indigenous
04:41peoples
04:41that they brought on to work the land and convert them for their gain I suppose
04:52and it was just a little way point until independence actually a very important person in Argentina's history was born
05:04in
05:04Corrientes province in this little town right here Yapayu is the birthplace of Jose de San Martín
05:14who like in America we would compare him to George Washington like one of the most important figures in the
05:23fight for independence
05:24he's like Ataturk in Turkey right like the prominent figure in the fight for independence
05:36there was a lot of conflict after independence though because there was Buenos Aires
05:43and then there was Rio de la Plata there was no combined Argentina yet and there was civil war
05:50and there was conflict here as well mainly conflict with Buenos Aires who had their own long story
05:59the troubled history post-independence Corrientes didn't consolidate with the rest of what would become
06:07Argentina until the war of the triple alliance in 1865 Paraguay invaded Corrientes the rest of Argentina came to their
06:19defense and kicked them out the triple alliance of course being Argentina Uruguay Brazil against Paraguay up here
06:30after that Corrientes very much became a part of Argentina
06:37throughout the 20th century I think Corrientes would have been best known for tobacco farming
06:43and the corruption involved in the tobacco barons the tobacco farmers there
06:53but other than that like I said I feel like I'm just missing something but that's pretty much all I
07:00got other than Corrientes updated in 2004
07:06its official languages which is of course Spanish but they added Guarani to their official languages which is pretty cool
07:13it would be great if they pulled up Bolivia and Argentina added more indigenous languages to their official languages
07:21that would be great that would be great for a lot of places not just Argentina
07:26but that is essentially all the history that I have for you
07:33so with that being said why don't I grab my tablet
07:36why don't I make sure that the cats are yeah they're there's they're roaming around
07:41make sure that they're not going to cause too much chaos in the background
07:46and I'll dim the lights and we will explore Corrientes province on Google Earth
07:52let's go here we are in Corrientes province
07:58but let's start by zooming out so you can see exactly where we are in the world
08:04here's big ol' Argentina right down here in this cone-shaped area of South America along with Chile here
08:15and very easy to find the area that we're talking about especially on a political map
08:21because it just kind of sticks up there in this corner of Argentina
08:25to be right there
08:29so let's start in the city of Corrientes
08:32I remember when I was talking about Resistencia
08:36when we were talking about Chaco
08:39and me being like I can't wait to talk about Corrientes
08:43because it seems like such a more exciting city
08:46and it is definitely a much bigger city
08:50with a lot of
08:52activity
08:53and culture
08:55but I really didn't find too many good slideshows here to show you
09:01even really along the river here
09:04we'll look at some but
09:06not that great
09:07we can see the big bridge there going across the river
09:12you can see of course there's beautiful parks
09:15lots of development happening there
09:19this very busy Parna river
09:25don't they all clear?
09:27this looks like

09:30but actually look how big this city
09:33it's so big
09:36and to think that it's not even like
09:38nearly as big
09:41as Argentina's other cities
09:44just like we looked at last week
09:47but we can see
09:50the beachy area here
