The cast and director of 'Mortal Kombat II' dive into the making of the film, discussing everything from potential character romances and the evolution of Sonya Blade to the most nauseating practical effects they witnessed on set.
Transcript
00:00And I wouldn't mind making out with Carl Urban, so sure.
00:03There's a spinoff called Fifty Shades of Combat.
00:07Yeah, I'm definitely down for that. I think it'd be great.
00:09I don't know if I was allowed to say that. I'm going to get canceled.
00:12Tell me you're not some crazy fans.
00:14How are you doing that?
00:16Are you coming or what?
00:23It was actually quite a cool story in that I think Ed specifically asked for that not to come into
00:28play in this season.
00:30I don't think he wanted Sonya's whole journey just to be about finding a man, which is great.
00:36I am sure if we continue to make them that that will be something that we get to explore.
00:42Yeah, that is an element of the evolution of Johnny Cage and Sonya's story that I very much look forward
00:49to play.
00:50I think that that'll be a fun extra dynamic to add to the ingredients
00:55and, you know, evolve these characters beyond just a sort of like a work relationship or a fighting tournament, you
01:03know, relationship.
01:05Yeah, I'm definitely down for that. I think it'd be great.
01:07I was wondering if you saw any particularly epic or nauseating moments of practical effects.
01:15A lot of it was quite practical in some ways, so it was actually really cool.
01:21Like seeing the, I guess, like the Johnny Baraka fight was to me the most like certain aspects of that.
01:28Him going through the...
01:32Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yes.
01:34Oh my gosh, yeah. There's a stunt in there that's insane.
01:38Yeah, and watching it in real time was wild.
01:41I find you annoying.
01:43Johnny would definitely die.
01:49You looked incredible as Shao Kahn.
01:53What was that like for you?
01:56Horrible.
01:59No, the thing is, what a lot of people wouldn't have understood through watching the film was the prosthetics
02:07and the level of prosthetics underneath the helmet was insane.
02:11Like three and a half, four hours just to get the face and the body on.
02:15And then maybe an hour in wardrobe.
02:19And then obviously going to film throughout the day.
02:22Just the general problems that occur being in Australia in a film set with all the lights and the heat
02:28and so on.
02:29Then you're wearing prosthetics.
02:30Then obviously the amount of fight sequences that Shao has in this film.
02:34Yeah.
02:35And intense fight sequences, you know.
02:38That created so many problems and so much headache, to be honest.
02:44But never throughout the whole sequences and the whole filming of it
02:50did I ever feel that that was enough.
02:53I was done.
02:53I didn't want to carry on.
02:54It was so exciting, so well rehearsed, such a good, solid story
02:59and such an incredible character to play that even on those days where you are exhausted, dehydrated
03:05and physically beaten, I still turned up with a smile on my face and excited to do it.
03:12So it was tough.
03:14It was hard, but extremely rewarding now we get to see the final product.
03:17So Johnny Cage's fake movie really cracked me up.
03:20That sequence was so delightful.
03:23Yeah, well that was a fun challenge because like, you know, I've seen it done and I've seen it done
03:28well.
03:29I thought DiCaprio did a great job in Once Upon a Time and Hollywood, you know.
03:33And just that subtle shift between the sort of reality within the movie and the movie within the movie.
03:39So for me, I was really thinking about, okay, well, what's Johnny Cage's style of acting?
03:44And I thought that he was like a martial arts actor that's trying to break out of martial arts movies
03:49into the mainstream.
03:50So he's trying to rip off like Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood.
03:53So some of the like the facial things you see him do in that movie, like he does this point
03:58where he sort of like goes.
04:00And that is totally ripped off from Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
04:05But that's the kind of the act like Harrison Ford makes it looks cool, Johnny Cage.
04:09It just looks ridiculous.
04:11But yeah, just a lot of fun.
04:13A lot of fun.
04:13I was also curious to the process of deciding kind of like when and how often to include like the
04:21moves from the games.
04:22I think we realized that we didn't need to do a lot of them.
04:29I don't know how many there are.
04:31I haven't counted them.
04:32But what we were talking about mostly was like character and how in these fights, in these pieces of action,
04:39how do the characters grow?
04:41And how do they get challenged?
04:43And how do they evolve through this?
04:45And so it sort of becomes this sort of layering process of just and then thinking, OK, we've done that
04:53here.
04:54So let's wait a beat and then we'll do this one over here.
04:56So it's just really just a sort of a balancing process.
05:07Shag, marry, kill, Shao Kahn, Joe Goldberg or Lucifer from Sabrina.
05:17Oh, my God.
05:17Shag, marry, kill.
05:21OK.
05:23Kill.
05:25Kill Lucifer.
05:28Great.
05:29Because, duh, kill the Dark Lord.
05:34Shag, Joe Goldberg and marry Shao Kahn because he's got the power.
05:40Actually, I do that the other way around.
05:43I do that the other way around.
05:44I'd go, yeah, I don't know if there's anybody that I want to marry.
05:47Sure.
05:48Yeah, there are really.
05:50That's what's catching me up.
05:52But I'm like.
05:52That's funny.
05:53That's fair.
05:54I think that's a solid assessment.
05:56Because I'm like, even marrying Joe Goldberg is like dangerous territory.
06:01The Kung Lao fatality that was so gnarly.
06:04It was so wild.
06:06What were your like memories of bringing that super emotional and like bloody and disgusting
06:11thing to life in this?
06:13I think we had so many discussions around that because, I mean, if you look at that fatality,
06:19there's a lot in it, especially how it recalls to Kung Lao's fatality in the first movie.
06:24Do you know what I mean?
06:25And that was the fatality that every single person remembered.
06:28So in the second movie, I think the whole point was we had so much feedback from the first movie
06:33and we wanted to give the audience what they wanted.
06:36Also, we wanted to add another level of surprise.
06:39You can't just hand feed the audience.
06:41And I think that's how it came about.
06:43It's like, it's the perfect twist.
06:44And it's heartbreaking.
06:45It feels like.
06:46Yeah.
06:47The first movie, for me, it feels like a bromance between Liu Kang and Kung Lao,
06:53how they were together anyway.
06:54And the second movie, it's like a heartbreaking.
06:57It's a breakup.
06:58It's a breakup story.
06:59It's a breakup story.
07:00Yeah, I love it.
07:02I thought that was super effective, for sure.
07:04Yeah.
07:04So it's really a spinoff for you guys, too.
07:06Yeah, you can have your own romance.
07:08The what?
07:09Brokeback combat.
07:12We're cooking with gas over here.
07:15Solid idea.
07:15All the spinoffs.
07:16He's like, I won't be able to show any of this interview.
07:19Come back.
07:20In what ways did your physicality change playing this different version of him?
07:27Well, I train a lot, cardio.
07:29I train so much.
07:30And then, for sure, this one, I think, more into technical rather than physical.
07:36Because now, because he has a shadow helping him fighting.
07:40And then, for me, in terms of, I don't want the audience to see him as two.
07:45So my discussion with the director and then Kyle, the action director,
07:48and all our friends, other choreographers,
07:50that we need to create a choreography that people need to see this is not a two person.
07:56This is like one person.
07:58And then he's using his alter ego as a weapon.
08:00And so that kind of technicality, for me, is more important.
08:05And then I really hope it conveys beautifully.
08:10Kano has so many great one-liners.
08:13You dickheads in or what?
08:14Do you have any favorite Kano-isms this time around that were especially fun?
08:18Look, I'll be totally honest with you.
08:20Once I say them, I kind of forget about them and then just move on.
08:24So I genuinely don't really remember what I even said.
08:28And I've not yet seen the film.
08:29And I'm very much looking forward to seeing it tomorrow.
08:32I get to watch it.
08:33But, yeah, you know, Kano, he's kind of part insult comic.
08:39You know, he's part Rickles.
08:41He just comes out and just roasts people for no reason.
08:46But what I love about Kano is, you know, he's a mercenary and he's tough and stuff.
08:51But his references are kind of like pop culture, like Harry Potter and stuff.
08:57So he's watching Magic Mike.
08:59I guess he watches those movies.
09:00And that's what I like about Kano is that there's, you know, he kind of exists in this amazing world
09:06of Mortal Kombat.
09:08But he's also, yeah, I guess he also Netflix and Chills as well, you know.
09:14We contain multitudes.
09:15Kano can do both.
09:18Are you shitting me?
09:19You don't have any pounds.
09:20Just incredibly handsome.
09:22Oh, no, stop me!
