00:01On This Day in Space
00:02In 1967, the International Outer Space Treaty was ratified.
00:07This treaty established a set of rules that regulate how different countries can explore and use outer space.
00:12Specifically it says,
00:14The exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interest of all
00:18countries
00:19and shall be the province of all mankind.
00:21The treaty dictates that no one can claim territory in outer space
00:24and that other celestial bodies must be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
00:29More than a hundred countries have ratified the treaty today.
00:32And that's what happened on this day in space.
