00:00Last week, we observed the International Older Persons Day,
00:04but this week, on the 10th of October, we observed World Mental Health Day.
00:09Exactly what world mental health has to do with men's health.
00:12In fact, there's a lot to do with men's health.
00:15Statistics show that perhaps about 5% of the adult population in the world
00:20probably suffer from some degree of mental health strain,
00:24and that constitutes about 4% of them are men.
00:34As men get older, above 70 years old,
00:39up to 5% to about 6% of men may suffer from mental health issues.
00:44And that highlighted why we should observe a little bit more carefully
00:50about mental health issues in men.
00:52So, why do men feel depressed when they age?
00:56In fact, there are several reasons.
00:57Number 1, as far as stamina is concerned, perhaps the stamina is getting weaker
01:03and men cannot do the things that you used to do,
01:05and that causes some degree of frustration.
01:08Number 2, actually, the environment has changed.
01:12So, as men get older, perhaps all their roles of providing for the family all diminishes,
01:18and as they retired and also as their children left home,
01:22they will feel a bit of redundancy, and that makes them feel a bit sad.
01:27Number 3, perhaps the health problems.
01:30You know, as we get older, there are non-communicable diseases,
01:33like putting on weight, having diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, and also high cholesterol,
01:39all contribute towards that overall sadness,
01:43because they have to start taking more medicine.
01:45And lastly, the hormone.
01:48As we get older, the hormone will drop,
01:51and that itself will have an impact on the actual well-being in the minds,
01:56because 1, the actual hormone controls that also energy level,
02:01and the energy level get less,
02:03men probably feel a bit more depressed.
02:05So, we can't all say that men will have depression as the testosterone drop,
02:12and not all depression can be treated with high testosterone.
02:17It all depends on individually.
02:19So, one has to look at the severity of that depression.
02:23For example, suicide ideations,
02:26or generally feeling unwell because of the mental health issue.
02:31When that occur, there are several ways to enhance it.
02:35Cognitive therapy and medication, such as SSRI,
02:40can help men to lift up their mood a little bit.
02:42But more importantly,
02:44is that overall social and also environmental health from the family.
02:50So, with that,
02:52that actually will make life more fulfilling,
02:54and then the whole community actually making sure that
02:59the men's life continue to be more rewarding and fulfilling,
03:02and depression will be a lot less.
03:05Next week, on the 20th of October,
03:08we're actually observing World Osteoporosis Day.
03:12So, will osteoporosis,
03:14which classically affect menopausal women,
03:17affect men?
03:18If that affect men,
03:20how will they present themselves?
03:22Actually, you need to stay tuned
03:24for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
03:27Peter Panclin,
03:28who is such a brilliant decision.
03:31So, we're in power for this which has been reported to the family.
03:33How will we share to others?
03:36You
