00:02Dear friends, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,
00:04As you know, my country, Turkey, has the shameful distinction of imprisoning more journalists
00:11than any country in the world.
00:13More than 150 journalists, reporters, writers and editors are now in jail.
00:19In fact, under Turkey's broad anti-terrorism law and state of emergency,
00:24journalism itself is criminalized and reporters face prison only for doing their job.
00:31More than 100 media outlets were closed down since the plot.
00:36By jailing journalists and banning papers and TV stations,
00:41the government wants to punish its opponents and threaten the others.
00:46You can easily observe this chilling effect when you have a look at the Turkish media
00:51which are mostly controlled by the businessmen close to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
00:57But of course, there are some courageous papers and journalists
01:01still trying to defend the truth by taking heavy risks.
01:06And some media outlets like ours, Özgürüz, have been joining this struggle from afar
01:12to give the freedom fighters a shoulder.
01:16I'd like to ask you and my colleagues there to help us in this struggle.
01:22Please, open your pages to the prisoners of thought.
01:27Give them a chance to write for your paper.
01:30Read their books, novels, poems, news stories.
01:35Go to Turkey to observe our hearings and let the world hear our voice of freedom.
01:40I hope next year we'll celebrate the world's Press Freedom Day in Free Turkey.
01:47You'll be all invited.
01:49Thank you very much all for your support and solidarity.
