00:01This ailing African elephant at the safari park in the Pakistani city of Karachi may be able to stand again,
00:08but she's not out of the woods.
00:11Madhubala was being looked after by a foreign veterinary expert team led by Dr. Amir Khalil,
00:18who says she's been undergoing prolonged treatment for tuberculosis and is suffering from worsening health problems.
00:24Madhubala was facing a severe problem with losing of body weight over 200 kilograms.
00:31She lost a lot of muscles, had swelling in her leg and some wounds in her nail and foot.
00:37When we have blood samples, we get the result that the elephant was suffering from many bacterial infections, paroxic infections.
00:46We start very intensive treatment with a colleague here to apply.
00:50We are now after three weeks, the blood results are improved.
00:52There is no bacterial and no paroxic infection.
00:56The park called in experts, including the Egyptian veterinarian, after seeing continued deterioration in Madhubala's condition.
01:03She reportedly collapsed twice in her enclosure in recent weeks, but Khalil says her condition has improved and there's still
01:10hope.
01:11This will need some weeks more till we are able to see she's fit again and she will be able
01:18to enjoy her life.
01:19So a lot of work, but I see hope. So it is a light in the dark. So we should
01:23not give up.
01:24We are here not because we give up, because we see there is a hope and there is a teamwork,
01:28which I appreciate so much from the team here.
01:33Animal rights activists have called for keeping the animals in their natural environment instead of housing them in zoos or
01:41at private farm homes.
01:47Captivity is a very bad thing, especially for wildlife. We're human. We want to be free.
01:53We should think that an animal is an innocent animal. They should also have the right to be free.
02:00So if it's in the zoo or a private farmhouse or in a house that has kept wildlife, and in
02:07the constitution of Pakistan, you can't keep wild animals at home because it's illegal.
02:13But these things are still happening and they should not happen. This is a very bad thing for wildlife.
02:24Madu Baloo was brought to Karachi from Tanzania in 2010 at a very young age, along with three other female
02:31elephants, under a reportedly controversial arrangement.
