00:00This team got going yesterday. Great win here.
00:03Everybody scored but me and Wiggy.
00:08Drake looks like a completely different guy. Maybe that's just to us.
00:12I mean, again, I think that we protected him well.
00:15I thought that he was decisive. I think the receivers
00:19did a great job. Everybody did a good job. It was good to see the tight ends get involved.
00:23I think spreading the ball around, like we said, just get the ball to the guy that's open
00:27in the progression as long as he's got an eligible number. And I think that's
00:31kind of what you're seeing. Everybody's getting touches.
00:35We're decisive with the football. I felt like we were able
00:39to overcome some mistakes and miscues as well.
00:43One of the things I've obviously noticed through the past couple of weeks, and especially yesterday,
00:47his decision-making. His decision-making has been on point. What have you noticed
00:51from him when it comes to that decision-making?
00:54I mean, I think he's probably worked on it. I know that he's worked on it.
00:58I think that he's trying to be decisive. I think the best decisions
01:02are ones that are done decisively and done confidently.
01:07And then, you know,
01:09just knowing and being able to
01:12predict where the ball may go, but then not
01:15be locked into it.
01:17There was a lot of talk before the season about depth of this team
01:20based off comments that you said. And you guys
01:22are banged up right now dealing with injuries
01:24both before the game, during the game.
01:26To see these guys be able to step into
01:28the position and get the opportunity
01:30on the field, what does that tell you about the depth now?
01:32Well, I mean, I just love the fact that
01:34guys take advantage of
01:36opportunities. And
01:39it's really what
01:40this league is about. And I've seen it
01:42happen over and over in
01:44the course of my coaching career
01:46or even playing career.
01:48Whatever that may be.
01:49And so I think that it's important
01:52to to make sure that the guys understand
01:54what they need to do each week,
01:56that we're not trying to overload the guys
01:58that maybe haven't been in there as much.
02:00But they played hard and it was great to see
02:02those efforts yesterday.
02:03Huge sack from Ponder to end the first half.
02:06And he's been doing that every week.
02:09Yeah. Just kind of your thoughts on.
02:10Well, I think he just continues to improve.
02:13He had a skill set that kind of
02:15showed last year.
02:16And I think his confidence continued to grow.
02:18And, you know, he's really
02:20done a nice job.
02:21He works hard.
02:22And him and Smitty and the rest of the group
02:24and Gabe and Draymond.
02:26And, you know, that's
02:27the extent of the group right now.
02:29But he works extremely hard
02:32and does a lot of things for us.
02:34Still help us on special teams.
02:36And, you know,
02:37does a great job on defense.
02:39Would you say that the Drake May we saw
02:41prior to the Bills game was more
02:43health or mental the reasons
02:45for the struggles that have turned around?
02:48Well, I mean, I think we'll just have to
02:52you know, I don't even know
02:55how to begin to answer that
02:56that question
02:58because I think it's
03:01not fair to anybody.
03:03It was
03:03we have to do
03:04when you look at player performance,
03:07we have to give guys
03:08everything that they need
03:10during the week
03:11training camp
03:12to be prepared
03:14situationally
03:16whether that's two minute
03:17that's end of the game
03:19but then also
03:21kind of figure out
03:22where they are
03:24based on their actions.
03:25And I always say this
03:25like a guy may not have to tell me
03:27that he doesn't
03:29love a certain
03:31coverage
03:31or that he doesn't love
03:32a certain route
03:33or that he doesn't love
03:34a certain play call.
03:36You kind of see it
03:37in their actions
03:37in the way that they
03:38play
03:39and the speed
03:40in which they play.
03:41So we have to determine
03:42what our guys
03:43are confident in
03:44by watching
03:46and see what they do
03:47at practice.
03:48And so
03:48there's a million things
03:50that come into play
03:52when you're not
03:52performing
03:53and whether that's
03:54decisions,
03:55protection,
03:56like it takes all 11
03:57when we go out on the field
03:59and it's an extension
04:00of the coaching staff.
04:01So
04:01I mean
04:02I'm not going to try
04:03to determine
04:04every single bad play
04:06and why it happened.
04:07Those are usually
04:08is a technique breakdown
04:09or is it a decision
04:12and then obviously
04:13is the play call
04:14the right play call.
04:15So
04:15we have to try
04:17to continue
04:17to move forward
04:18in what we did yesterday.
04:19Still have to find ways
04:21to run the football
04:22to be able
04:23to have our
04:24get them on the move
04:26get them outside
04:26the pocket
04:27throw some screens
04:29love taking the shots
04:30so just finding
04:32a balance
04:32of all those
04:32different things.
04:33We talked to you
04:34last week
04:35about coaching
04:36more aggressively
04:38yesterday
04:38go for it
04:40twice on fourth down
04:41same drive.
04:42Is that
04:43you know
04:44something intentional?
04:45Is that
04:45you know
04:46have you changed
04:47your approach
04:47a little bit
04:48in the last couple weeks
04:50or is it just
04:51you know
04:51purely
04:52I think we have
04:52opportunities
04:53that we feel like
04:54we should
04:54we can go for it
04:55we will
04:56you know
04:56I just
04:58you know
04:58I just try to figure out
04:59what we're going to need
05:00and how our offense
05:01is playing
05:02and you know
05:04Mike
05:05when you
05:05you talk about
05:06everybody's road
05:07is different
05:08to get to where
05:09they are right now
05:10and you're getting
05:10a lot of production
05:11you obviously talked
05:12about Ponder
05:13but a guy like Chisholm
05:14or even a guy
05:15like Kyle Williams
05:16like you're getting
05:17a lot of production
05:18woods
05:18from younger guys
05:20that are seizing
05:21their opportunities
05:22what's that say
05:23about your
05:24obviously your coaching
05:25staff
05:25these players
05:26that are taking
05:28advantage of
05:28the opportunities
05:29when they're
05:30presented to themselves
05:30I mean I think
05:31that it's always
05:32about the player
05:33you know
05:33but I do
05:35appreciate
05:36that our coaches
05:37do a fantastic job
05:39to get these guys ready
05:41and just like I tell
05:42the players
05:42the coaches
05:43they're
05:43they want to be
05:44an extension of the player
05:45and they want to make
05:46a connection with them
05:47they want to be able
05:48to teach them
05:48develop them
05:49and when that player
05:50goes out there
05:51the coach who
05:52either was a
05:53bad player
05:54or
05:55couldn't play anymore
05:56like that's
05:57their only
05:59reach to the game
06:00like that's
06:01their connection
06:02to the game
06:02is that I get
06:03this guy ready
06:04and so you see
06:05a lot of joy
06:06from the coaches
06:06when they work
06:08on something
06:08and the player
06:09is able to
06:10do it successfully
06:12in the game
06:12and obviously
06:13that's due
06:14to the player
06:14but there is
06:15great satisfaction
06:17from our coaches
06:18and from every coach
06:20when you brought up
06:21Chisholm
06:21was that play
06:22designed that way
06:22or was he
06:23freestyling out there
06:24yeah he's just
06:25acting like Kelsey
06:26he's just making
06:27this is what
06:28we're going to do
06:28now Chisholm
06:29we're just going
06:29to go rogue
06:30all right
06:31no
06:33there's some design
06:34there's some design
06:34believe it or not
06:35we do design
06:38some plays
06:38okay good
06:39all right
06:40that's a keeper
06:41I was thinking
06:42of myself
06:42an undrafted guy
06:43doing that
06:44who's just getting
06:45out there playing
06:45I'm like
06:47that's the way
06:48to get you out
06:48of here real quick
06:50it does seem
06:51like we're trending
06:52in the right direction
06:52towards AJ Brown
06:53coming back soon
06:54what is his addition
06:56going to do
06:56for this offense
06:58I don't know
07:00whenever he'll be back
07:01well he should help us
07:02I hope that he's
07:03going to help us
07:04but that remains
07:06to be seen yet
07:07when he'll be back
07:07so we'll see how
07:09he does today
07:09and move from there
07:10pretty cool celebration
07:11of the 25th anniversary
07:13of that first Super Bowl
07:14team obviously
07:14you were a part of
07:15Wiggy gave us his side
07:16of the defense
07:18deciding that
07:19you were going to
07:20forego the individual
07:22announcements of your
07:23names and be chosen
07:25be introduced as a
07:26team
07:26how did that come
07:27together and what
07:28did you think of the
07:29ceremony yesterday
07:29well I thought the
07:30whole weekend was
07:31fantastic
07:31I thought that that
07:32was really special
07:34from the guys being
07:36over on Saturday
07:36for the walkthrough
07:37and being able to
07:40go to dinner on
07:41Saturday night to be
07:42recognized and see
07:43these guys on Sunday
07:44morning and just
07:46the fans and their
07:47families and everybody
07:48that could cherish
07:51that and I think
07:54Anthony Pleasant
07:54I think AP was
07:56was talking about
07:57coming out as a
07:58team and man it
08:00just kind of caught
08:01fire and I think it
08:02was such a special
08:03time that it was like
08:04why we played so many
08:05guys I think
08:06defensively or
08:07everybody contributed
08:09and it was like well
08:10it was kind of hard
08:10just to pick 11 guys
08:11and you know we had
08:13probably 14 or 15 guys
08:15that acted as starters
08:16defensively and so I'm
08:19sure he just thought
08:19why don't we just come
08:20out as a team and it
08:22was pretty cool really
08:23special I know that
08:24you guys were focused
08:25on the game but was
08:26there talk with the
08:27players on the current
08:28team about that oh one
08:29season I know Woodson
08:30was wearing a tie law
08:31throwback jersey so it
08:32was cool to see you
08:33know an honor in that
08:34way some of them
08:36weren't even born
08:37right
08:40but during I try to
08:41give him a variable
08:42throwback jersey
08:43they're like why is
08:45Ninkovich on this
08:48yeah but maybe fake
08:50label but maybe to
08:52follow up a little bit
08:53on on Courtney I know
08:55her question I know
08:56you you you showed
08:57them the Allen
08:58Iverson stepping over
08:59Tyrone Lou play in the
09:01championship do you use
09:03a lot of the things that
09:04might have happened like
09:05you said before their
09:06time that was
09:07significant moments
09:08whether it was Patriot
09:10stuff from you know any
09:11of the the run of the
09:12Super Bowl just in sports
09:14in general do you use a
09:15lot of that stuff they
09:16can understand like the
09:17moments yeah I mean but
09:18then I try to give
09:19context to it and explain
09:20to it and and yeah we
09:22had conversations about
09:23the team excuse me about
09:24that 2001 team about
09:26being five and five or
09:28being inconsistent early
09:30on in the season or
09:31losing a key player and
09:32the guy step it up and
09:33other contributions and
09:36you know five and five
09:38and winning nine games
09:39after Thanksgiving and
09:40all the things that that
09:42season had with it so
09:43yes I did explain it and
09:46then if there's
09:46something that's older I
09:47try to explain to him
09:48like you know whether
09:50it's talking about
09:51Mariano Rivera or just
09:53his blowing two saves at
09:55the end of 2004 and
09:57then actually coming and
09:58starting a season against
09:59the Red Sox and blowing
10:00two saves and how he
10:02handled that and then
10:03went on to record 31
10:05straight saves and 23
10:06scoreless innings it's
10:07like just trying to find
10:09some parallels of saying
10:10hey this is what he did
10:12in the season before
10:14unfortunate good for the
10:16Red Sox opens the
10:17season against the
10:18champions kind of but
10:20then you know does what
10:22he does for the rest of
10:23the season so you know
10:24we'll just try to give
10:25some context to it and
10:27sometimes they like it
10:28sometimes they don't I
10:29don't know that's what I
10:31try to do I know you
10:32mentioned it after the
10:33game but too many
10:34penalties for this team
10:37yesterday yep we'll get
10:39it fixed penalties really
10:40again I know we it's the
10:42easy thing but if you
10:43look I know all the
10:44analytics tell you that
10:46penalties are about a
10:4750-50 predictor for
10:49success in wins and
10:51losses so I know
10:53everybody's like oh
10:53they're so undisciplined
10:54they stink and they have
10:56so many penalties I went
10:58down this road before I
11:00was so enamored with
11:01penalties and rightfully
11:02so but then when you
11:04look it's like geez it
11:06doesn't like I thought
11:07there'd be some
11:08correlation and there
11:09really isn't but there's
11:11some certain penalties
11:12that we have to be able
11:13to avoid and the ones
11:15that create field
11:15position and the kickoff
11:16return and some of the
11:17things that it'll be hard
11:19to overcome offensively
11:23but those are things we
11:24certainly have to work on
11:25I would just say that
11:27though historically it's a
11:30not a real determining
11:31factor for wins and
11:32losses not just your games
11:34watching across the league
11:35it feels like they are
11:37being overly litigious
11:38with these like it's
11:39every game you watch
11:41there's 200 penalty
11:43yards like have you
11:44noticed in just yeah I
11:45mean but it is hard I
11:46mean because guys are
11:48going to hold and
11:48they're going to get
11:49away with what they can
11:50get away with and so I
11:51don't know how to answer
11:52that I just know like
11:53whatever the standard is
11:55that we want if we can
11:56make it consistent I
11:57think that's the most
11:58important thing is if
11:59you know I mean a
12:00false start is a false
12:01start of offsides is an
12:02off sides you know if
12:05the DB isn't playing
12:06the football and you
12:08know there's contact
12:09okay great but you know
12:11some of these things are
12:12just going to have to
12:12we'll have to look at
12:13and you know it is a
12:15fast game they have a
12:15hard job they have a
12:16difficult job and when
12:19in doubt I mean I think
12:20they obviously want them
12:22to be 100% sure of what
12:24they're seeing and if
12:25they're not and then
12:26don't call it you
12:27looked upset with the
12:28intentional grounding
12:29call yesterday I was
12:31confused yeah they made
12:34it sound like because
12:34his back used is a
12:35better way to describe
12:37that I mean I was
12:38confused I was like
12:39it doesn't matter
12:40whether the eligible
12:41receiver is looking at
12:42him or not you know
12:44I mean it's Corey's
12:45the eligible receiver
12:48it's like his back
12:49was turned they're
12:49like right he has a
12:51number on his back
12:52so it's eligible it's
12:5385 it could have been
12:54a screen where he just
12:55didn't get out in time
12:56and they do say that
12:58that that role was
12:59intended to protect the
13:00quarterback and so
13:01there's a lot of
13:02leeway that's the whole
13:03reason that that
13:04intentional grounding
13:05went in is they get to
13:07give quarterbacks a lot
13:08of leeway to be able to
13:10save themselves to to
13:12not get you know hit and
13:15so that's how what they
13:16saw and yeah that's how
13:19it goes Jets this week
13:21what kind of problems do
13:22they pose well I mean I
13:23think that they've gotten
13:24off to a good start I
13:25think they're playing good
13:26defense certainly you
13:28know we will have to be
13:29able to handle Wilson and
13:32the running game and it's
13:34a physical team it's a
13:35good old line I told you
13:36that last year it's a
13:37physical line that I had
13:38a lot of respect for
13:40last year when they
13:41played us all right
13:42coach well thank you
13:43guys I appreciate it I
13:44mentioned I mentioned
13:45this briefly on the air
13:46Friday I appreciate you
13:48being gracious when I was
13:50somewhat emasculated in
13:52front of you by my by my
13:55person that was fun that
13:57was fun to watch you did
13:59come you came to my aid
14:00sort of but I mean that
14:01is I tried the best that
14:03I could but I did like to
14:04buy was glad that I could
14:05partake in some of the
14:06jokes as well all right
14:08that is Mike Rabel the
14:09head coach of the New
14:10England Patriots
14:11you
