BMW X4 xDrive20d tries to prove that a coupe SUV is more than just style, and this review digs into whether the sporty look is worth the extra money. With a 2.0-liter 190 hp diesel, xDrive all-wheel drive, M suspension and adaptive steering, it is pitched as a more dynamic alternative to the X3, even though the price gap is hard to ignore.

The review looks at practicality too, from the 525-liter boot and 1,430-liter folded capacity to rear-seat space, climate controls, heated side seats and USB-C ports. It also covers the live cockpit, BMW OS 7, Eco Pro driving, motorway cruising, acceleration figures, and how the car behaves in everyday use, including the diagonal traction test.

If you enjoy automotive reviews, BMW test drives, coupe SUV comparisons, diesel car impressions, and real-world practicality checks, this is a detailed look at the X4 xDrive20d. It is useful for viewers searching for BMW X4 review, BMW X4 vs X3, sporty diesel SUV, and compact luxury crossover driving impressions. This is a BMW SUV test drive focused on handling, comfort, fuel economy, and whether the coupe SUV formula really makes sense.

00:00a sedan is too impractical the estate is too predictable and the suv is too
00:06not sufficiently in your face well enter the coupe suv or sac as bmw calls it this is the
00:13bmw x4 and finally i get to review one with a two liter diesel something that you are more likely
00:19to
00:19buy than an x6m almost every time i call bmw to arrange a test drive i ask for something that
00:38normal people buy preferably a low spec based diesel or petrol maybe with a manual transmission
00:44allegedly that's not what normal people buy but i'll let you be the judge of that anyway this time
00:51i managed to secure a 2 liter 190 horsepower diesel bmw is trying to convince its clients that the x4
00:58is more than just an x3 with a bit of boot chopped off in the x4 you get intelligent x
01:04-drive all-wheel
01:05drive system sport m suspension or the sport adaptive steering all as standard of course
01:13as we all well know there's no such thing as free lunch yes you can have a rear-wheel drive
01:19x3 but
01:20most engine variants come with all-wheel drive anyway the difference between the x3 and the x4
01:26both powered by a 2 liter 190 horsepower diesel both with all-wheel drive is almost 4 000 euro
01:32the m suspension and the m steering which are standard on the x4 cost 1000 and 250 euro respectively
01:40if available separately or they are part of an m package which is only slightly cheaper for the x4
01:46so you are paying more for your standard equipment the only thing that you are really getting is the
01:52lower center of gravity as the x4 is five and a half centimeters lower than the x3
01:59the boot volume up to the window line is 525 liters in the x4 it's only 25 liters less than
02:06in the x3
02:07the difference is more noticeable with the seats folded 1430 liters for the x4 and 1600 for the x3
02:14to better visualize the difference let me just move this suitcase like this because let's say i want to
02:22carry a couple of these four maybe and this is pushed all the way back against the seats and now
02:31let's
02:31try closing the boot
02:37and this boys and girls is the difference between an suv and a coupe suv
02:43on the plus side there are shopping bag hooks rails to secure luggage elastic tapes a 12 volt socket
02:48the backrest released handles are close to the boot edge so you don't have to lean deep inside
02:55space in the back for two adults is more than generous and if the adults are slim even three
03:00will fit abreast if the one that picks the short straw doesn't mind the tunnel between their legs
03:05there is third zone climate control back here the side seats are heated and there are two usbc ports
03:13since 2018 when i reviewed this generation x4 the biggest change is the addition of the live
03:19cockpit professional and bmw os7 this means we should get wireless android auto but this car doesn't have
03:26it why unlike the tesla where software updates are pushed to all cars at once the let's call them
03:34established car makers are less flexible this interface may look almost identical to the one in
03:40the m3 or the bmw 5 series i reviewed recently but the hardware may be completely different and this
03:47means updates may not only come at different times for different models but even for different weeks
03:54of production otherwise the cockpit looks pretty much the same like in the x3 links to my bmw x3
04:00launch video as well as the x3 ph ev review in the description also what do you think is better
04:06a
04:062 liter diesel or a ph ev drop me a comment
04:19in 2018 i attended a bmw x4 launch event in spartanburg where most of bmw suvs are made
04:26of course back then i drove the m40d which wasn't particularly frugal
04:30but quite quick and more than happy to drift around the track
04:38the x4 x drive 20d has gear ratios which prevents you from doing anything silly even on a track which
04:46i guess is a good thing if you expect a german car to be serious like the germans the first
04:53and second
04:53gear are very short and by the time you reach third your chance for romance is long gone perhaps the
05:01190 horsepower diesel is at least frugal well in the right car i'm sure it is unfortunately the x4
05:07despite its slick looks still weighs almost two tons bmw promises five liters per 100 kilometers combined
05:13but it's hard to get less than seven on the dual carriageway of course you can achieve better results
05:19depending on your driving style speed and whether you are using eco pro mode or not
05:29bmw started introducing the eco pro mode around 2012 in this mode the reaction to the gas pedal is
05:36less abrupt the climate control is more efficient and the car uses less petrol or diesel in this case
05:42also there are additional indicators to help the driver to be more conservative for example you are
05:47warned about upcoming speed limits or junctions and you can take your foot off the gas early and coast
05:53thus saving fuel
05:58handling on instagram one of my viewers asked me if there's a noticeable difference in handling
06:03between the x4 and the x3 i don't have a yes or no answer as there are many variables like
06:10this
06:10standard sport suspension and sport steering in the x4 however assuming we have an x4 and an x3
06:17with the same spec and engine variant chances are you are not going to feel a significant difference
06:23you'll have to push the car really hard on a twisty road perhaps the more powerful engine variants you
06:29can feel the lower center of gravity but it's probably more likely to be felt on a track and
06:36are you really buying an x4 m or an x3 m to track them
06:44acceleration bmw promises the 2 liter diesel x4 will accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour
06:50in 7.9 seconds in sport mode i got 7.97 seconds first try in normal mode i got 8
06:58.7 seconds it was cold
07:00and the tires didn't have much heat in them so i suspect under the right conditions i could achieve
07:05what bmw claims from 80 to 120 kilometers per hour i got 6.3 and 6.4 seconds respectively
07:14the 2 liter diesel x4 isn't very demanding to drive it's a car to take it from a to b
07:20without any flexing the suspension is comfortable enough and the brakes
07:25they don't have anything to do anyway this is not a speed demon
07:33on the motorway as well as around town you can turn on the adaptive cruise control
07:37and lane keeping assist you are still responsible for driving
07:40but they take a load off in mundane driving situations
07:47just remember driving with cruise control doesn't necessarily make you more efficient
07:51the adaptive cruise control will slow down before a slower car and then will accelerate
07:56when the road is clear but it won't do it as smoothly as a human driver would
08:03unless you're an aggressive driver you can get much better results just taking your foot off the gas
08:08way ahead of an obstacle when you see it and the radar still doesn't
08:28since this is an x-drive model let's try my diagonal test i stop halfway when two wheels diagonally have
08:35low traction and the all-wheel drive system has to figure out how to distribute torque this bmw x4
08:41doesn't have an off-road mode both attempts are in normal mode the first is with traction control on
08:47and the second is with traction control off in both cases the x drive reacts almost instantaneously
08:54and the car carries on
09:05the x4 is not offered as a ph ev because the batteries would eat up too much space in the
09:11boot
09:11however if we compare the x3 x-drive 20d with the x-drive 30e the diesel still is a better
09:19choice
09:19for long journeys while the ph ev is what you need in the city to which you have to drive
09:24from the
09:24suburbs using the petrol engine and unless there is some sort of an incentive the price difference
09:30doesn't justify the better dynamics which the hybrid drivetrain offers prices of the pmw x4 start at
09:3751 800 euro for the two liter petrol the two liter diesel starts at 54 600 euro and this test
09:44car is
09:44specced up to around 80 000 euro in 2018 i summed up my x4 review saying the coupe suv is
09:54better to drive
09:55than the regular suv from a time perspective i think that better is not worth the extra money in the
10:01x4 just
10:02like in mercedes-benz glc coupe and whatever is the current audi counterpart you're paying for style
10:09and how do you like the bmw x4 and the coupe suv style and which engine would you choose let
10:15me know
