UAS (USB Attached SCSI) now works on Windows 98! The new xHCI98 2.x release added real USB 3 SuperSpeed support and a UAS driver. Why it matters: some USB 3 drives work only in UAS mode, so older systems like Windows 98, 2000, XP or even 7 see them as unknown devices. Now Windows 98 understands this newer protocol, which handles several commands at once, so it’s faster with quick storage. Tested with an NVMe enclosure.

00:00Here is a Ryzen 9 system running Windows 98, bare metal.
00:03But here is the crazy part, the USB 3.0 driver just got a massive update.
00:07Wait, what?
00:08Does Windows 98 even support USB 3.0 at all?
00:12Well now it does, thanks to a driver called XACI 98.
00:16The initial release forced USB 3.0 ports to run in USB 2.0 mode, so parts of the existing
00:22USB stack could be reused without any modifications.
00:25But the new release, well, that's the real deal with actual USB 3.0 supports.
00:31And there is even a brand new UAS driver, which means we can use things like an NVMe enclosure
00:37on Windows 98.
00:38Because why not?
