00:00October 12th marks Indigenous Resistance Day is a day that highlights the history and current
00:07challenges of the world's indigenous communities.
00:09From Boston, in the United States, our correspondent Dan Albrecht has the details on the events
00:14held in this framework.
00:17Hello Telesource Central Studios, I'm here at the 6th annual Indigenous Peoples' Day
00:23of Newton, the largest Boston-area celebration of this holiday.
00:26With the Mashpee Wampanoag, Coina Wampanoag, the Hassamanisco Nipmunk Band, the Narragansett,
00:34and many, many other nations represented.
00:37After a traditional opening ceremony, the keynote speakers spoke on the theme of medicine of
00:42the land, healing through ancestral plants and as part of that community building.
00:47Guests were invited to join in dancing behind me.
00:50There are dozens of information tables on the tribes and artists displaying their hearts
00:55and selling crafts, people eating indigenous cuisine from the many cultures represented
01:00here.
01:00And this is all part of what organizers told me is an effort to uplift and celebrate that
01:06indigenous people still exist and their cultures are rich.
01:09And they're calling for harmony among people and the planet.
01:13The city of Newton only recognized Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2020, joining Boston and many
01:19other cities and states nationally in replacing the day honoring Christopher Columbus, who discovered
01:26the Americas as a genocidal slave owner.
01:29It's been a devastating history of genocide, internment, cultural destruction in the last
01:35400 years for the indigenous people, but also a history of resistance and ongoing fight for
01:41survival, sovereignty and cultural preservation.
01:45And the struggle for recognition and historical memories continues as Massachusetts and the United
01:51States still haven't declared Indigenous Peoples' Day.
01:54So today, the communities here are joined together to celebrate their nations, their determination
02:00to not just survive, but grow and heal and carry the struggle forward for recognition and sovereignty.
02:07For Teller Sword, Dan Albright, Newton, Massachusetts.
