In Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, farmers have been staging an indefinite protest since August 22, 2023, demanding the full payment of pending sugarcane dues. However, the protest has now shifted to the sugar mill. Over the last five days, four farmers have been on a continuous hunger strike. Frustrated by the lack of a resolution to their issues, female farmers have locked the gates and offices of Shamli Sugar Mill Society. Farmers state that the lock will be removed only when their demands are met.
