00:00at the height of their powers.
00:01Seven points clear in the Premier League,
00:03Sir Alex Ferguson's men were well set to retain their title
00:06and were planning a tenth successive home victory
00:08over Harry Redknapp's West Ham United.
00:11If past results were anything to go by,
00:13a United victory was a formality.
00:15The Hammers had never beaten them in the Premier League.
00:18With a Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid in mind,
00:21Sir Alex rested Ryan Giggs,
00:23so Quinton Fortune started.
00:25Otherwise, Ferguson went with most of his first-choice line-up.
00:28The awards kept coming for him.
00:31This was for being manager of the decade.
00:34He'd also been named the greatest manager ever by his peers.
00:40With Paolo Di Canio out,
00:42Paolo Wanchok came in for West Ham to partner Freddy Canuti.
00:46Croatian Igor Stimac was suspended.
00:49South African international Quinton Fortune
00:51also received an award as the most promising international player.
00:54Your match commentator is John Champion.
00:571st of April,
00:59Manchester United 14-1 on
01:02to lift the Premier League title.
01:05Seven points clear of Leeds at kick-off.
01:07West Ham also going well by their own standards.
01:10Eight in the table.
01:15Manchester United's home form
01:18overwhelmingly better than West Ham's away.
01:20They've only won three times on their travels at Bradford,
01:23at Watford,
01:24and at Leicester.
01:27This is a different matter altogether coming here.
01:35There goes Dwight York.
01:38There's Irwin.
01:40Winning it a second time and taking on Lomas.
01:46With a big old kick.
01:50It's been a long season for West Ham.
01:52It began in the Intertoto Cup back on the 17th of July.
01:55It's their 45th game.
01:58Harry Redknapp has only ever enjoyed one victory
02:01over Manchester United as a manager
02:03and that was famously in the FA Cup
02:0516 years ago
02:06when he was in charge of Bournemouth.
02:16Rio Ferdinand's header
02:17will give Manchester United a throw.
02:24Gary Neville
02:27Beckham
02:31Nice ball.
02:32Neville
02:35Backed behind by Steve Potts.
02:46And forward comes Yapshtam for this.
02:55Coal.
02:59Through the legs of Lomas.
03:02But not past Craig Forest.
03:09With a nice trick.
03:11Manchester United have opened up very brightly.
03:15I think the manager Kevin Keegan
03:16having a chat with former referee
03:18Don Shaw in front there.
03:35Manchester United are top scorers
03:37in the English Premier League
03:38with 69 goals.
03:41They do give the opposition a chance.
03:43They've conceded more
03:45than any other member of the top six.
03:47They've let in 35.
03:49Well, then all that's made for great entertainment.
03:54Off goes Wonshop.
03:57And he's got goal side
03:58of Sylvester.
04:00And he has scored.
04:05Echoes of his derby debut.
04:10And he bagged that wonderful individual effort here
04:13to announce himself
04:14in English football.
04:17Bosnich can't believe it.
04:19Bosnich should have stopped it.
04:21But Paolo Wonshop
04:22has repeated his trick.
04:27Three years ago this weekend
04:29he scored that goal here for the Rams.
04:31And now he's staged another raid.
04:35How about this for a scoreline?
04:37Manchester United 0
04:38West Ham 1.
04:51Keane to Beckham.
04:56Gary Neville.
05:00Cole.
05:01Couldn't turn on it.
05:02Beckham tries one.
05:15This is a turn up.
05:17West Ham really disappointed
05:18that Paolo Di Canio
05:19pulled out after injuring himself
05:22in training on Thursday.
05:23There are one or two in their camp
05:25that feel that
05:25when the big games come up
05:27away from Upton Park
05:29he's not always up for the task.
05:32Here's Wonshop.
05:37It's not the first time
05:38that Di Canio has made himself unavailable
05:42for a difficult away fixture.
05:59Gary Neville.
06:03Keane.
06:08Beckham.
06:17Beckham.
06:19will go across to take this corner.
06:25It's taken short for him.
06:30comes out of Paul Scholes.
06:341-1.
06:45Manchester United were behind for just 13 minutes.
06:57you can see Forrest struggling to see the ball.
07:01By the time he did see it, it was too late.
07:15Scholes.
07:16Skulls.
07:24Scholes.
07:32Minto, one shot, now Beckham, Keane, and again Roy Keane, down he goes and Mike Reilly points to the spot.
07:55For the foul by Steve Potts, West Ham's most experienced defender, caught out by Roy Keane, eight games short of
08:14500 for the Hammers, was unable to hulk Keane with a legal challenge.
08:25He's claiming that he got a toe-end to the ball, that's not how the referee saw it.
08:35Dennis Irwin has converted ten of his eleven penalties for Manchester United.
08:42Make that ten of twelve, but he'll score from the rebound.
08:51He couldn't have fallen more comfortably, more obligingly for him, as it rebounded off poor Craig Forest.
09:03This is not the West Ham goalkeeper's favourite stadium.
09:08Five years ago here, he conceded nine, playing for Ipswich.
09:13And it was a good penalty save, but he was helpless, as the loose ball was lashed in by the
09:20man whose penalty he just saved.
09:26York.
09:30Manchester United unbeaten in the last 13 games against West Ham, since a very costly defeat at Upton Park eight
09:36years ago.
09:43Goals!
09:45Good save, Forest.
09:53He knew it was going to be busy, and it's proving to be that way.
10:05So Alec Ferguson has a huge testimonial dinner in Manchester planned for tonight.
10:11Guests arriving from all over Europe.
10:13Yeah, you kuntin.
10:13Goals!
10:19Walko.
10:22Goals!
10:26Goals!
10:27Goals!
10:31Goals!
10:37Goals!
10:39Goals!
10:43Wasn't the finest moment for Mark Bosnich, was it?
10:54If you come as the goalkeeper, you have to collect or get a punch on it.
11:02John Moncur.
11:12Lumas.
11:15Zoe.
11:23Lampard.
11:26Minto.
11:29He's got past two.
11:32And that goes down under the challenge of Keane, although, in fairness, Minto didn't appeal.
11:39It's Beckham.
11:41How about that provision?
11:45Quinton Fortune.
11:56Moncur.
12:04Canute.
12:06It was on loan from Lyon.
12:10Roger Cross.
12:16A prominent member of the West Ham coaching staff.
12:18Markham.
12:19Come on, Freddie.
12:30Beckham.
12:36Beckham's ball in.
12:38And Cole.
12:41Out jumped Lomas.
12:43And makes it 3-1.
12:49In first half stoppage time.
13:01It's a terrific ball in.
13:03On the run, delivered by Beckham.
13:08It's the sort of service on which Cole has thrived for a decade.
13:18Manchester United are going to head in happily.
13:21For their half-time words of wisdom.
13:29There's the whistle.
13:31And Manchester United lead by three goals to one.
13:35Which fairly accurately reflects the balance of the play that we've seen.
13:40Scholes, Irwin and Cole with the goals.
13:44Manchester United, three.
13:47West Ham United, one.
13:54The flankers task for West Ham or is there realistic hope?
13:59Manchester United.
14:02Not it seems to be denied at the moment.
14:05They've won nine games in a row here against West Ham.
14:10And they're unbeaten on this ground in 36 games in all competitions.
14:1524 in the Premier League.
14:18Last visiting team to win here at Middlesbrough in December 1998.
14:25Here's Scholes.
14:31Cole.
14:35Well, Lomas is laying down the law to his colleagues at the back for West Ham.
14:42Concerned with what he views as a lack of application and of concentration.
14:56York.
15:02Keane.
15:03Keane.
15:03For Irwin.
15:06Now Fortune.
15:09Let him fly.
15:11And it's well held.
15:12By Forrest.
15:29Beckham.
15:32Rio Ferdinand slipped.
15:34Cole was in.
15:35Here's Beckham.
15:36Three waiting.
15:37There's Scholes!
15:40That's a beauty.
15:51Very dainty.
15:53Very dexterous.
15:55Very galling for West Ham.
16:00A backheeled second for Paul Scholes.
16:04A backheeled second for Paul Scholes.
16:04Manchester United lead by four goals to one now.
16:11What's most worrying of all for the visitors is that there are still 40 minutes to play.
16:20That's terrific.
16:22That's terrific.
16:29Chloe.
16:31Cameroon International.
16:37Scott Minto.
16:42Trevor Sinclair.
16:45Trevor Sinclair.
16:55That was a hopeful effort shall we say.
16:59Not a threatening one.
17:02West Ham have never beaten Manchester United in the English Premier League.
17:12New England.
17:22C guard against Worlds4!
17:32all to the finals.
17:34There, there.
17:36New England's England's England!
17:36...suffering from resting key players like Ryan Giggs.
17:46Beckett.
17:49His butt.
17:50Around the goalkeeper.
17:52Goes down!
17:53Mike Riley has awarded another penalty.
18:00And West Ham are far from happy.
18:04Particularly John Moncure.
18:07Referee says that Moncure clipped the heel of Nicky Butt.
18:14Interesting to see who takes this.
18:16Dennis Erwin missed in the first half from the spot.
18:21Schooled from the rebound.
18:23Well, that's why West Ham are unhappy.
18:25He tripped himself.
18:28It's going to be Paul Scholes.
18:30Who now has a hat-trick!
18:40The home-grown, home-spun talent.
18:46Born nearby in Salford.
18:49Becoming a prolific Manchester United scorer from midfield.
18:53Three today.
18:59Fortune.
19:04Lomas was with him stride for stride.
19:13And this sort of form is worrying for those who must face Manchester United in the coming days.
19:19The round Madrid scouts can't fail to have been impressed.
19:23Here's Beckett.
19:25Came off Fowey.
19:28Fortune.
19:32What the desire of Stam to get there first?
19:35The game's already won.
19:37Neville.
19:39Neville.
19:41I suppose they're all playing for places in Madrid.
19:46Free kick.
19:51Now this is within range for you-know-who.
19:59Manchester United's number seven quickly on the scene to tee it up.
20:08It's Beckham.
20:09Oh, it's fantastic.
20:14His speciality.
20:27Six for Manchester United.
20:31And some of the goals have been beauties.
20:34Six of the best.
20:39West Ham just having to grin and bear it.
20:42It's a familiar feeling for them on this ground.
20:45And certainly for Craig Forrest.
20:47Remember, beaten nine times here.
20:49Keeping goal for Ipswich.
20:51And he's let in six today.
20:57He had no chance with that.
21:01How about this for a luxury?
21:04You lead by six goals to one.
21:07You take off Andy Cole and Paul Scholes and replace them with Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
21:15Those goals won the European Cup.
21:20She's gone.
21:20And he's gotten an idea.
21:33Still that gun being chewed vigorously.
21:36She went to win a lot.
21:46I guess.
21:47Craig Lampard.
21:50Canute.
21:53That was Fowey.
22:04I don't think West Ham have had as many chances as Manchester United have had goals.
22:16It's been a canter, despite the concession of the early goal to one shot.
22:22It's been a breeze.
22:29Beckham.
22:35Oh, Potts slow to react.
22:38Solskjaer wasn't.
22:46Seven goals now.
22:49Sixteen in two visits to Old Trappard.
22:52Let in by Craig Forrest. It's no great reflection on him.
22:56Difficult to fault him, really.
22:58And he's made some good saves.
22:59It could have been double figures, but for the Canadian.
23:04But he's been badly let down by those in front of him.
23:14Yes, chaps. You're next.
23:16Middlesbrough in nine days time.
23:24York.
23:27Solskjaer!
23:30Good play by Forrest to get the loose ball away.
23:35Which is away from being 8-1.
23:41This is going to be West Ham's worst defeat at the hands of Manchester United.
23:48And this was how close Solskjaer was to his second and United's eighth.
23:54And this was how close Solskjaer was to his second and United's eighth.
24:02Beckham.
24:02Go!
24:09Now if it's academic, now for West Ham.
24:13I'm going to be so relieved when the whistle goes.
24:17Knut.
24:18To canute!
24:28them now Manchester United go 10 points clear in the English Premier League with
24:34just seven games to play a hat-trick for false goals goals from Beckham Cole
24:41Irwin and latterly Solskjaer a comprehensive win that word barely does
24:48it justice and poor Craig Forrest beaten 16 times now in two games here April
24:54Fools Day this was for real 7-1 so another great day for Manchester United and Paul
25:01Scholes in particular with 15 goals conceded in three games West Ham must
25:06have been sick of the side of United then again such was their dominance that
25:10most clubs dreaded coming up against them this emphatic display brought United a
25:15step closer to another Premier League title which they eventually took by 18
25:19points West Ham finished in nine
