00:00This ain't Madden.
00:03It's not.
00:04Nope.
00:08Garrett Wilson, for example.
00:11Okay.
00:15What fan is going to be like, nah, I don't want Garrett Wilson.
00:21But play this out with me.
00:23Play this out with me.
00:25And I know, I know as we should be, we are all in on this year.
00:29You give a bleep about next year if the Niners can win a Super Bowl.
00:33And I understand that.
00:34But play this out with me.
00:36I know Dajon Stribling has only played a quarter in his career.
00:40I also know that the Niners in the league are overwhelmingly excited about him.
00:46And the 49ers also have a multi-year commitment to him as an early second-round draft pick.
00:54Pearsall is a little bit of a separate issue right now because of the inability to stay healthy.
01:00But in theory, start of next year, Ricky Pearsall factors into this.
01:04Mike Evans is on a multi-year deal.
01:07Okay.
01:08So, also, understand that Brock Purdy's contract explodes starting next year.
01:16And the 49ers this year are trying to hold as much cap money as possible because they can roll that
01:22over.
01:23And they need that next year because Brock Purdy's number will explode.
01:29So, that's a piece of the puzzle.
01:31But just, like, if you're Garrett Wilson, what do you expect in this league?
01:35Like, dude, you're a one.
01:38You're at least a 1A.
01:40And wide receivers in this league who are ones and 1As, what do they want?
01:45What about the ball?
01:46They want a quarterback.
01:48They want a quarterback.
01:49Yeah.
01:49They want the ball.
01:50They want plays drawn up for them.
01:52What exactly are the Niners to do if we freak out and get Garrett Wilson and then three weeks from
02:00now, the Niners have Mike Evans, Garrett Wilson, Debo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Dajon Stribling, and then I can keep going
02:12from Jordan Watkins to Jacob Cowling who has to be active because of his special teams duties.
02:18You know, forget the guys that you've brought in, like Brandon Cooks, and I'm fine.
02:24You want Christian Kirk to just never play for the Niners?
02:26Fine.
02:26I'm cool with that, too.
02:28But, like, what?
02:30Now you're Kyle.
02:31Like, okay, call plays.
02:33Mike Evans, Garrett Wilson, Debo Samuel, Dajon Stribling.
02:38Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle.
02:41Like, that's all I'm saying.
02:43And what does it cost you to get Garrett Wilson?
02:46At least a two, right?
02:48And if you look at his contract, if you bring him in and you realize that he's probably not the
02:54fit for you or whatever, next year the dead cap is $48.7 million.
02:58So you can go ahead and roll the dice on somebody.
03:01And I think what you said earlier is kind of where my mind is.
03:04If you really feel like you want to bring in a somebody, and I'm thinking about the Keyon White trade,
03:10which is almost a year ago to the day, you gave up a sixth, and you got Keyon White and
03:16a seventh.
03:16So basically, you gave up about 30 spots in the draft.
03:20I don't even know what the number actually was.
03:21And you got Keyon White.
03:23And it was a, we need a body.
03:25Let's see if you work out.
03:26And he's worked out.
03:28And he had a sack on Sunday.
03:29And so it's like, yeah, great trade.
03:31If you do that with a receiver, you're not looking at Garrett Wilson or Jerry Judy.
03:36It's more of a Jawan Jennings type of a thing.
03:38And I just don't think that he is that guy.
03:42And I want to say, I don't think that you even need to make any trade for any guy.
03:45Because you don't use a lot of three receiver sets anyway.
03:49So once Juice comes back, and you've got him in there with McCaffrey, it's going to be two receivers anyway.
03:56Don't forget what Kyle Shanahan said in his conference call yesterday.
04:01I would like to point out that this entire conversation is now happening nationally.
04:07And I feel like conveniently, nobody wants to play this sound for you.
04:12So I want, whatever you're doing, if you're interested in the Niners and the wide receiver position,
04:18listen to these 14 seconds on what Kyle Shanahan said about the wide receiver problem.
04:26Yeah, I mean, I think we have enough.
04:27I mean, we got three guys on practice squad also who can help.
04:31I mean, anytime you lose this number of guys, whether it's four guys or five guys, whatever it is, it's
04:36a huge challenge.
04:37But we do have guys in this building who can do it, and we'll always look.
04:40Okay. I think we have enough.
04:45There it is. I think we have enough.
04:47Now, sure, people say things.
04:48It doesn't mean that that's what's going on behind the scenes.
04:51But it's also, we're heading into week six.
04:53That's a little early.
04:55I know there have been some trades, but that's mainly, like, disenfranchised guys.
05:00So, like, it's a little early for a trade.
05:02And if you're not going to do it right now, then why would you do it?
05:06In other words, if you think you've got what you need for Monday night, well, then, hell, after that, you
05:13ride it out.
05:15You get six more days, you'll play a game in Atlanta, and then you take two weeks off, and let's
05:20see who's healthy.
05:22I'm not closing the door, but I really feel like this is one of those things where, I don't know,
05:28man, the horses left the barn a little bit early here, where it's like Debo got hurt.
05:32Oh, my God.
05:33Garrett Wilson and Jerry Judy and everything.
05:35I don't think it makes any sense.
05:37Or Brian Thomas, Jr., and, like, other people who will cost you more than you want to spend.
05:41And even the Marvin Harrison deal was, I think that they, Arizona, did very well in what they got for
05:48a guy who was really struggling.
05:50And so the Texans, I don't know why they were in that desperation mode that they seem to be.
05:55And I get it because their season is kind of on the brink.
05:58You know, they have a winnable game this weekend, and so maybe that turns it around.
06:03But, like you talked about earlier, the Shanahan system, it's not where you have a guy come in on a
06:08Wednesday, and on Thursday, he gets it, and he plays on the Monday.
06:12No, it's going to take a week or more.
06:14And, honestly, you did that with Brandon Cooks, and I'm not saying that he's going to be Mike Evans or
06:19Debo, but he was able to make a play on Sunday.
06:22Stink is going to join us in 20 minutes.
06:24I can't wait to talk this out with him.
06:26Stats Guerrero is going to be on at 415.
06:27We'll talk it out with him.
06:28Until then, let's talk it out with you.
06:30888-957-9570.
06:32If you've got an opinion on this wide receiver situation with the 49ers, let's talk it out.
06:38We'll take your calls.
06:39888-957-9570.
06:40The other thing, and maybe nobody wants to, like, I don't know if this is a little edgy of a
06:45thing here, but let's not forget the position we're talking about.
06:48This is wide receiver.
06:50This is the Deva wide receiver position.
06:53In other words, this is a position where we've watched throughout the league when guys don't get the ball and
07:02guys get put into situations that don't necessarily feel good to them.
07:06It gets a little loose sometimes.
07:09That is not inherent to the types of people necessarily that play wide receiver.
07:15It's inherent to the position.
07:16It's one of those things in sports.
07:18They are flashy.
07:20They are important.
07:22They are just incredibly athletically gifted.
07:26But they don't get the ball unless a bunch of other people make it happen for them.
07:32And so that's why frustration reigns a lot.
07:35Like you just said, what do most wide receivers want?
07:37A quarterback.
07:38Like, how's Justin Jefferson doing the last two years?
07:41It looks, it's frustrating, right?
07:43You're stuck without a QB.
07:45Or you're stuck in WR3 and you want to be WR2.
07:50Or you're WR2 and you want to be dealt like Garrett Wilson didn't like it when the Jets got Devontae
07:54Adams.
07:55He didn't like that.
07:56Because he really wants to be wide receiver one.
07:58Do you want to go get Garrett Wilson?
08:00Be like, that's Mike Evans.
08:02That's George Kittle.
08:03We're here.
08:04This is Christian McCaffrey.
08:05Meet him.
08:05We don't throw the ball downfield that much, by the way.
08:08Hope you're okay with that.
08:09Kind of a run team.
08:10And then, by the way, we've used early draft picks the last two years on Dajon Stribling and Ricky Pearsall.
08:17Demarcus Robinson hears, too.
08:19Oh, by the way, Debo's going to be healthy in a couple weeks.
08:21But don't worry.
08:22I know you're making 30 mil next year.
08:24I'm sure we'll make it work.
08:26Ah-ha.
08:27No, you won't make it work.
08:28No, thank you.
08:30There's no way that they're going to bring in a player who's got that many years left and somebody who
08:35is in that spot where, again, I'm not advocating you trade for anybody.
08:39But if you were going to trade for Jawan Jennings, he knows the language.
08:43He's been here.
08:44He doesn't make a ton.
08:45He does the dirty things you need him to do, which is block and go over the middle.
08:50So even if it was going to be a, you know what, we're going to trade for Jawan right now,
08:53and we're going to hope to get three to four games, maybe even more, out of him, he would fit
08:59based on the money and the reality of the fact that he's been here before.
09:03You bring in somebody high price from the outside, you have no idea if they're going to fit.
09:08I don't hate the Jawan idea.
09:11And the reason I don't hate it, I know a lot of people, and I think this is a fair
09:15take, people have been like, he doesn't do what the receiver room needs.
09:20True, but that was our experience with him the last two years when he was asked to almost moonlight as
09:25a one.
09:25And Jawan is not that.
09:27So if the 49ers brought him back and they were like, hey, for a few games we need you to
09:32be big slot, and by the way, you're also an insurance policy if more injuries go down, but at the
09:39same time, don't be shocked if in week 13 you're deactivated.
09:44And would Jawan like that?
09:46Maybe not, but quite frankly, it's better than what he's got going on right now in Minnesota, and it's a
09:51one-year deal, and it's all the people he knows.
09:54Again, I don't know what went on with the relationship at the end last year, but that doesn't feel like
10:00a terrible insurance policy to me.
10:03Plus, it would fit right on brand with what the Niners are doing with this whole get-the-gang-back
10:08-together thing that they got going on this year, which is really kind of all the feels.
10:12So I don't mind that aspect of it.
10:14That's the guy who I'm like, okay, you want to move down 20 picks in the seventh round and get
10:20Jawan?
10:21Fine.
10:22That's fine.
10:22But this aim-high Garrett Wilson thing to me just feels very, yeah, it feels madness to me.
10:32If this were a video game, I'd be for it.
10:35It's madness, and it's also not the way they go about doing their business.
10:39And you already mentioned all the names who would be ahead of Garrett Wilson.
10:42He doesn't come in as wide receiver one.
10:44He might be wide receiver two for now, but when Debo's healthy, Debo's going to play over him because Debo
10:51can run the jet sweep.
10:52He can be your wide back.
10:53He can do all the motion things.
10:55And Garrett Wilson is more of a classic just wide receiver.
10:59And so that job is kind of taken, and this is something that you said before it was last year
11:03about, like, that job's been taken.
11:05That job's not available.
11:06And I can't remember the reference that you were talking about with, you know, the various players where, you know,
11:11you want a certain job.
11:12Might have been Kaminga where.
11:14I think it might have been, yeah, like, we need a one here at Golden State.
11:18It's like that job's taken.
11:19Exactly.
11:20And so wide receiver one is taken, and wide receiver two, when Debo gets healthy, is also taken.
11:25And so you need to bring in a number three or number four.
11:28Right now you have a bunch of those guys, and so an extra body, that'd be okay.
11:32And I know when you get into the whole Super Bowl or bust mentality, people don't want to hear about
11:36rookies.
11:37But don't forget about dribbling now and what this organization was doing preseason and the trust he had already gained
11:45from Kyle Shanahan
11:47to where that week one in another country, he led the team in snaps in the first quarter.
11:52They trust him.
11:53They love him.
11:54They're over the moon about him.
11:56They're not going to bring him back and bench him.
11:59Like, week 10, week 11, provided that that, and they know right now how that's progressing,
12:05if that's progressing well, Dejan Stribling, WR2, week 10, week 11, book it.
12:11Book it.
12:12Provided that he's healthy.
12:13If he's not and we don't know that, then okay, that maybe changes the calculus.
12:18But we were told after week one, 10 weeks, and so I'm expecting after the bye,
12:25conversations start about him ramping it up, and when he comes back, I want him in the game.
12:29I want him in the game big time.
12:31He is the skill set that they need.
12:34All right, let's go, let's hear from some of you.
12:36John and Benicia.
12:37Hey, John, thanks for calling.
12:38What's up?
12:40Hey, guys.
12:41You know, I think that all this talk about adding a wide receiver, I mean, you have a
12:45two-game lead in the division.
12:47I think this is just kind of a panic thing, and I think that you've got plenty of people
12:51coming back to you, as you guys have mentioned.
12:54I mean, if you want to panic and start looking at people now, I'd go for, I'd get a kicker.
13:00I mean, let's focus on where the real weakness is, not at wide receiver.
13:04You're down on Eddie.
13:06Oh, yeah.
13:07I mean, you guys talked about how you did laps every time he, you know, he'd stepped
13:13it off and was going to attempt a kick.
13:15I mean, I think I got in 10,000 steps just on that last kick when he made it.
13:21Well, he made it.
13:22He made it, which makes him different than the Rams kicker.
13:25So there's that.
13:26Well, that's true.
13:27Yep.
13:28He's now, he's gone out of a job.
13:30Hey, John, thanks for the call.
13:31It's interesting.
13:32How would you answer this?
13:33And we'll keep going on the phones.
13:35A couple of texts have a very fair response.
13:38Why would the Vikings help the Niners?
13:41You're battling for the one seed.
13:43My quick answer to that would be, I don't think the Vikings think that Juwan Jennings
13:46is going to flip the NFC.
13:48But it's a fair question.
13:50I don't know if, you know what I mean?
13:52If the Vikings can get something for Juwan, they'd probably do it.
13:56But is because it's the 49ers, is that preventative for a conversation?
14:02It might be more expensive, based on the fact that they're also 5-0.
14:05And if you're 5-0, even though we are kind of like sunning them, and I called them Ross
14:10Perot last segment, which, look it up, kids, if you don't know what that is.
14:13But I don't think that Minnesota, even at 5-0, is a viable, we're going to do the whole
14:18damn thing kind of a team.
14:20Unless they go full-on 2,000 Baltimore Ravens and have a defense that is just that good,
14:25and you don't need your offense to score more than maybe 14 points.
14:29But beyond that, you probably, if you're Minnesota, you could think about trading Juwan Jennings.
14:34But would you trade him to the Niners?
14:35Probably not.
14:36I don't know.
14:37I mean, it's an interesting question.
14:38I don't know if they worry about it when we're talking about, for Minnesota, this is a back
14:47half of the roster player.
14:48And quite frankly, for the 49ers, it stands to be as well if these other guys come back
14:56when they're supposed to come back.
14:57The other thing about Juwan is you could plug and play.
15:00You don't have to worry about him learning Kyle Shanahan's system and doing a two- to three-week
15:04ramp-up.
15:05If Juwan Jennings got here on Friday, he could play on Monday.
15:09Yeah, he knows the deal.
15:10He knows the quarterback.
15:11He knows the system, all the rest of it.
15:13I just think about Minnesota because it's really interesting.
15:15They have so many guys in the receiving core who are also hurt.
15:19That's another good point.
15:20So Juwan at least actually gets to play, and you've got, you know,
15:24Hawkinson leads the team with 23 catches through five games.
15:28But he got hurt last week.
15:30Right.
15:30Jordan Addison missed last week.
15:32Justin Jefferson played, but he was questionable.
15:34He's got 19 catches.
15:35Aaron Jones, the running back, with 12.
15:3712, Addison with 11.
15:39And then you have to go down to Gavin Bartholomew.
15:43Yeah, that's TJ Hawkinson's backup.
15:46Bartholomew.
15:47And then it's Miles Price with five.
15:50I don't know who that is.
15:51D.J.
15:52Not Khaled.
15:53Dallas.
15:54Oh, yeah.
15:55That's a running back.
15:55He's got four.
15:56Okay.
15:57It's exciting.
15:57Ty Felton's got three.
15:59And then you get to Juwan.
16:01Juwan Jennings.
16:02Two catches.
16:03But that, I mean, looking at this offense statistically, they stink.
16:08Yeah, they're terrible.
16:09And look, they've had a quarterback injury, but none of the quarterbacks play well.
16:12None of them hit the receivers.
16:15So Juwan's frustrated.
16:17Coach Los Altos.
16:18Hi, Coach.
16:18Thanks for the call.
16:21Gentlemen, a great, great show as usual.
16:25I'm not sure I'm in agreement, though, with you guys to not do anything.
16:30And I'm with you guys on not doing anything crazy.
16:34But let me just throw out a couple of thoughts.
16:37So one is you kind of stole my thunder on the receiver one.
16:40I would try and get Juwan Jennings, because of what you said, is he could start, like you
16:48said, bring him in Friday, he could play Monday.
16:50I also think that there's a couple of others that you could look at.
16:54Calvin Ridley for the Titans, and he wouldn't be maybe a six-round draft pick, or even Quentin
16:59Johnston from the Chargers, and I think you could get him for a fifth or sixth round.
17:05I do think, though, that if you wanted to get an edge, I personally would trade.
17:10A fifth round or a sixth or a fifth round for Khalil Mack.
17:15I think you need that edge presence that we just don't have, even when Bosa comes back,
17:21because they'll double Bosa.
17:23So I would do something like that.
17:25And one other idea that I would consider is like an A'shaun Robinson from the Buccaneers.
17:33I think you could get him for a fifth or sixth round, and he's really highly rated on PFF.
17:40He's almost 90, and he's a run stuffer, and it's a one-year deal.
17:44So, yeah, it's a rental for a sixth round or maybe a fifth round.
17:48But I think that's a bargain when you're a Super Bowl team and you're serious.
17:53So those are my thoughts, guys.
17:54Yeah, Coach, thanks.
17:56First of all, Coach, he's been reading.
17:59He's been checking around the league.
18:01And his head is kind of where mine more is, too, with regard to that defensive line.
18:07Because if I'm looking at players who are coming back, and Nick Bosa is one of them,
18:11that's the one I have the least confidence in staying healthy when he comes back.
18:16Almost a bit of a load management type idea with regard to Nick.
18:22Heck, I'm excited by what I see from the young guys on the defensive line.
18:27But with Bosa and his situation, James Thompson Jr. is still coming back.
18:33That's big.
18:34C.J. West and Alfred Collins, I don't even know if people want them to come back with what they've
18:39got working.
18:40Michael Williams is back.
18:41He looked pretty good.
18:43So that's all exciting.
18:45But that's where you really, to me, like bolster that group and be ready for the stretch run.
18:53I do like the Khalil Mack idea.
18:56That's one that I do like.
18:58And if the price is relatively right, you can go ahead and think about that.
19:02But again, I do think we are 23 days away from the deadline.
19:05So you've got a chance to play a game on Monday.
19:08And Bosa is working to maybe be available.
19:10I'm not sure if he will, but certainly the next week is what he said.
19:14So you have two games and a bye, and then you've got the deadline.
19:17So I do think that at 5-0 especially, you can kind of sit back and wait.
19:22You don't have to run down the hill and make that trade right away.
19:25You can kind of, you know, see how it plays out.
19:28You could be 7-0, 6-1, 5-2.
19:32You could be 5-1-1.
19:33You could be 5-0-2.
19:35I won't go through the whole thing.
19:36I hope they're not 5-2.
19:38That would be a bit of a bummer.
19:39That's the other thing.
19:40Do you want to blink right now?
19:41Does anybody think the Niners can't beat Washington with what they currently have?
19:45Of course they can.
19:46Of course.
19:47In fact, should.
19:48Should.
19:497-1⁄2-point favorites with what they currently have.
19:51Right.
19:51And Atlanta's a little bit different on a short week with the travel.
19:55Long trip.
19:56You know, the pre-bye sort of a pose.
19:58But we won't get to that until we have to get to that.
20:00But even if you go into the bye at 6-1 and you're still 10 days away from the deadline,
20:05then you can look at your guys and say, raise your hand if you're going to be healthy in
20:09the next 10 days.
20:10All hands stay down.
20:12Jose in Fremont is next.
20:14Hi, Jose.
20:14What's good?
20:17What's going on, gentlemen?
20:18First-time caller.
20:20Long-time listener.
20:21Thanks, man.
20:21But I had a take that I haven't heard from anybody, but we all say how Jawan Jennings
20:29is a ferocious blocker.
20:31He's kind of a slower wide receiver.
20:34Why not bring him in and double him as a tight end if needed or as needed to spell, you
20:43know,
20:43Kittle a little bit?
20:45Jose, you know what?
20:46I mean, I get where you're coming from on that.
20:48Like, I don't think those kinds of, thank you, Jose, positional changes are as easy as
20:56fans probably like to think.
20:58Like, Jawan Jennings is not a tight end.
21:00And that is a very different position than wide receiver.
21:04And so I'm not bringing in Jawan to teach him something new on the fly in the middle of
21:10a 5-0 season.
21:11I'm cool if Jawan wants to come in and play big slot right now because slot receiver is
21:17an issue.
21:18And so if that's something that is in the cards here in the very near term, great.
21:24I don't think it's necessarily going to come together that quickly.
21:28Right now, for me, the leader in the clubhouse in this conversation is that the 49ers elevate
21:34Will Pauling or Xavier Smith from their practice squad and try to go beat Washington with Brandon
21:40Cooks and Jordan Watkins and Mike Evans and Jacob Cowling running around out on the field.
21:45Yeah, and you saw a lot of the three tight ends out there on the field, including Brayden
21:49Willis, who was also, you know, back there as a fullback.
21:54So you don't have juice.
21:54And I'm not sure when he actually will be ready, but he's already a maybe for this week.
21:59That's exciting.
22:00Yeah.
22:00And if you look at it, you had, you know, Luke Farrell, six snaps at fullback.
22:04Brayden Willis had five as well.
22:05So, you know, Shanahan's going to do what he can with the personnel to make it work.
