00:00:00It's been over 30 years since I suggested anybody lose their job.
00:00:04I just think it's wrong to say a man should lose his job.
00:00:06But you mentioned shelf life.
00:00:08Do you think Boone has reached a shelf life?
00:00:11Like, in other words, if we're watching some repetitive stuff,
00:00:14do you think that a new voice is needed?
00:00:18Not because Joe Girardi was not a bad manager, right?
00:00:22Like, if somebody hired you today, Joe, I would say,
00:00:25oh, they got a good major league manager in Joe Girardi.
00:00:28If the Yankees fired Aaron Boone today and somebody hired him tomorrow,
00:00:32I'd go, oh, Aaron Boone.
00:00:33Has his shelf life, to make a difference here, been reached?
00:00:38I don't think so.
00:00:39And here's why I'll say no.
00:00:41John, I think it's a really excellent time to have the person who is joining us on the show,
00:00:46Joe Girardi, who is thoughtful and is also the ex-Yankee manager
00:00:50and was a championship player with the Yankees.
00:00:53And there's certainly a lot of ground to cover with that and other things with Joe Girardi.
00:00:57Yeah, I'm surprised we haven't had him on before.
00:01:00And it should be a great guest, a great speaker, as you guys know,
00:01:04who watch Yankee baseball.
00:01:06Not only a Northwestern graduate, but one of the smartest guys that you and I have ever covered.
00:01:11So looking forward to what he has to say about the Yankee disappointment,
00:01:17should we say, for the season.
00:01:18Yeah, I like how you snuck in Northwestern there, John.
00:01:21You are good.
00:01:21You are good.
00:01:23You know, baby, I'm just being a good alum, that's all.
00:01:25Yes, yes.
00:01:27Good college football team, from what I hear.
00:01:30We'll be asking Joe all the stuff about the Yankees.
00:01:33How do you manage a team like this?
00:01:35Should you be changing the manager of a team like this?
00:01:38John and I at the top will do a deep dive again on Boone
00:01:42and what's going on with the Yankees.
00:01:44Last week, that led to record numbers for this podcast.
00:01:47We have more listeners than we've ever had before.
00:01:50Please keep doing that with us.
00:01:52We'll play hit and error at the end if you stick with us on the show
00:01:55with Joel Sherman and John.
00:02:02John, I feel like we're picking up where we left off.
00:02:06We have not had that moment.
00:02:08You know, there's no professionalism really anymore
00:02:10when you deal with baseball teams.
00:02:12You used to hear very quickly from teams
00:02:14who would make people available.
00:02:16They don't do that anymore.
00:02:18They go into hiding.
00:02:19I would assume that a week without any kind of significant news
00:02:25as we move closer to Labor D-Day, which is November 30th,
00:02:30would mean that changes are unlikely.
00:02:34I would never say impossible.
00:02:36But we haven't heard from the Yankees if Brian Cashman is resigning.
00:02:40I'm assuming he is because I haven't heard anything from Yankee people
00:02:45that they want to change the head of baseball operations.
00:02:49And since we both know the head of baseball operations
00:02:53and the owner kind of liked the manager,
00:02:56and the manager has a contract for next year,
00:02:59and we haven't heard anything, and that lockout is coming,
00:03:03I'm going to assume he's here.
00:03:04What do you think, John?
00:03:06Well, I think we've thought all along that Cashman will be staying.
00:03:09There was no suggestion that he wouldn't be.
00:03:13Obviously, a bad ending for the Yankees, and it was a bad ending.
00:03:17Brings up the manager situation, particularly since it's been nine years now
00:03:22for Aaron Boone.
00:03:23But I, you know, not because we haven't heard from them,
00:03:27but I think we've kind of thought all along that they would probably keep him.
00:03:32You know, obviously, he did a good job in the regular season to get there.
00:03:37No judge.
00:03:38A lot of injury issues.
00:03:40Basically, no Stanton since April 24th until those two couple strikeouts in the postseason.
00:03:47So we did a good job there.
00:03:49I wrote, and I'm not going to back away from it,
00:03:52I wrote that they should move on because it's been nine years,
00:03:56and he's 27 and 30 in the postseason.
00:03:59And, you know, we all grew up in the Steinbrenner era.
00:04:02I'm not suggesting we hire and fire the same guy five times
00:04:06or have 15 managers in 20 years,
00:04:09but nine years is a long time with the highest or second highest payroll in the league
00:04:14to have no World Series.
00:04:16And, you know, I kind of think at this point,
00:04:21I think he's a good manager.
00:04:23I think he'll get hired quickly.
00:04:24I don't think there's a lot of great choices out there who are better than him.
00:04:29But I think it's kind of time to move on from Boone.
00:04:33I like to, you wrote, you suggested something about the clubhouse.
00:04:36I don't know if you used the word accountability,
00:04:38but that's what it was about, right?
00:04:40We'd like to see, I'd like to see some more accountability in there.
00:04:42Like, you know, once in a while and I screwed up would be nice from somebody.
00:04:47You know, I don't know if we can expect it from jazz,
00:04:49but we hear too much in that clubhouse that they,
00:04:52I don't know, I'm sure they understand when they made a mistake,
00:04:55but they don't admit it.
00:04:57So too much fake positivity there.
00:05:00Yeah, I think they deal,
00:05:01the term I keep using is they live in unreality.
00:05:05They tell us up is down too often.
00:05:07And I think, John,
00:05:09I don't think talent is killing them at this time of year.
00:05:12I think that they stand talent for talent with just about anyone pretty much all the time.
00:05:18And in years where I thought the other team had more talent,
00:05:20I didn't think Houston was a sweep better than the Yankees in 22.
00:05:24I didn't think the Dodgers were five,
00:05:26you know,
00:05:26a gentleman's sweep better in,
00:05:29you know,
00:05:29in 24.
00:05:30The Yankees get hit.
00:05:31They don't have the toughness.
00:05:34It feels to me,
00:05:35the fortitude,
00:05:37you know,
00:05:37I mean,
00:05:38you want,
00:05:38you want to play the game and they have a mental skills coach who's in charge of their team and
00:05:42the Cowboys.
00:05:42Those two teams feel like the two teams that collapse at the biggest times of year all the time.
00:05:47Are they dealing with reality of,
00:05:50I just think they incubate niceness.
00:05:53John,
00:05:53I use this example on earlier when I did the webcast that we do the pinstripe post.
00:05:58I'll do it for,
00:05:59for here also,
00:06:00because I think,
00:06:00I think it says something.
00:06:02Look,
00:06:03I think if Patrick Mahomes is not playing in a playoff game,
00:06:07his butt is sitting in a chair in front of a press conference and he's talking about it.
00:06:11I think if LeBron James is not playing in a playoff series,
00:06:14his butt is sitting in a,
00:06:15you know,
00:06:15there's a responsibility of those players to understand who they are,
00:06:20the organization to understand it and the institution.
00:06:23The Yankees played in two rounds of the playoffs.
00:06:25Aaron judge never came in the press conference room,
00:06:27never sat.
00:06:28He's one of the two biggest stars in the sport in a non,
00:06:31now a sport that's not national really anymore.
00:06:34Him and Otani stand above all others.
00:06:37The institution of major league baseball was basically afraid to tell the Yankees what to do.
00:06:42The Yankees,
00:06:42uh,
00:06:43browbeat them.
00:06:44The Yankees think that their crap doesn't stink,
00:06:47that they don't have to do anything.
00:06:48You could ask any national broadcaster who comes in to do a national game for the Yankees,
00:06:53how little they're given by the Yankees compared to the other 29 teams.
00:06:57The Yankees are acting like they're still winning championships.
00:07:00And everyone was walking on eggshells about this.
00:07:04Wasn't this easy to deal with?
00:07:05Hey,
00:07:06Aaron judge has a great two calf strain.
00:07:08The history of great two calf strains is nobody that we know has come back before X number of
00:07:13weeks.
00:07:14He has taken a PPP shot.
00:07:16He is a diligent athlete.
00:07:17He's trying the best he can,
00:07:18but until he could run full speed,
00:07:21uh,
00:07:23without us being concerned about re-injury,
00:07:25he can't play period paragraph.
00:07:28Let's get the manager stopping from walking on eggshells.
00:07:31Instead.
00:07:32I think it's typical of the Yankees.
00:07:33They're afraid of their star.
00:07:35They never want bad news to,
00:07:37to come into this.
00:07:39I saw Pat Murphy.
00:07:41Rip the pitcher who was still on the mound for throwing a pickoff throw.
00:07:46Uh,
00:07:47like uselessly against the base runner.
00:07:49Who's not running.
00:07:50Like,
00:07:51like,
00:07:51can we deal with reality?
00:07:52Can we toughen up and deal with like,
00:07:56you,
00:07:56you've got to spend part of the 162 games getting mentally tough for the toughest
00:08:01time the Yankees get hit in the jaw and they stay hit in the jaw.
00:08:05And I think that they go down and they stay down.
00:08:07I think they've got to John get to the point where they hold each other to a
00:08:13higher level of accountability internally and externally.
00:08:17This way,
00:08:18everyone feels good.
00:08:20Oh,
00:08:20they're going,
00:08:21they all love each other,
00:08:22but they don't,
00:08:23they're not tough.
00:08:25I think you have a good point.
00:08:27There's something going there.
00:08:29I mean,
00:08:29in terms of the publicity,
00:08:30uh,
00:08:31yeah,
00:08:31they,
00:08:31I think there's an attitude that we're the Yankees and we don't have to do
00:08:34anything.
00:08:35People will come to us.
00:08:36So their effort there is low,
00:08:38but yeah,
00:08:39they,
00:08:39they aren't dealing with any negative situations,
00:08:42uh,
00:08:42appropriately.
00:08:43Uh,
00:08:44I don't know.
00:08:44Is it easy to do it in Milwaukee or Tampa?
00:08:47I don't know.
00:08:47Pat Murphy.
00:08:48Dave Roberts is doing it.
00:08:49John in LA.
00:08:50He might have been Shohei Otani.
00:08:53Well,
00:08:53right.
00:08:53We'll see.
00:08:54I mean,
00:08:54he's going to ask him how he's doing.
00:08:56And if he tells him he's doing well,
00:08:58I,
00:08:58you know,
00:08:59we probably will play him.
00:09:00Right.
00:09:00Uh,
00:09:01I'm sorry,
00:09:01John,
00:09:01can I just tell me,
00:09:02he also called out Shohei Otani earlier this season for how bad his
00:09:06approach was.
00:09:07Can you imagine Aaron Boone calling out Aaron judge?
00:09:09Come on.
00:09:10No.
00:09:11And when he,
00:09:12when he said that it was a moderate strain and judge was upset about that.
00:09:16Right.
00:09:16When you're when Boone even revealed that much,
00:09:19you're right.
00:09:20They should have come out and said what the situation was.
00:09:22We all know that judge is putting in a great effort to try to get back.
00:09:26We would not think any other thing than that.
00:09:29He certainly is.
00:09:30He's turned himself from a number 31 or 32 pick into second best player in baseball.
00:09:36Uh,
00:09:37so,
00:09:38I mean,
00:09:38he puts in an incredible effort.
00:09:40nobody would doubt him.
00:09:41So I,
00:09:42I don't know why,
00:09:43what they were so afraid of.
00:09:44It doesn't help them.
00:09:46It doesn't give them any competitive advantage to pretend that he could be
00:09:49back.
00:09:50And I,
00:09:50I think they kind of knew that he was not coming back,
00:09:52uh,
00:09:53certainly through those rounds and probably another one if they've gotten
00:09:56that far,
00:09:56but,
00:09:57uh,
00:09:58something,
00:09:58something's amiss.
00:09:59And I think it's,
00:10:00I think that's a possibility that they need to toughen up.
00:10:04Uh,
00:10:05you know,
00:10:05our guest is going to be Joe Girardi.
00:10:08And,
00:10:09uh,
00:10:09you know,
00:10:09one of the knocks on him was,
00:10:11uh,
00:10:11maybe that he was too tough or that he was to,
00:10:13you know,
00:10:14really told things like they were like it was.
00:10:16So,
00:10:16and you know,
00:10:18I,
00:10:18I mean,
00:10:18I'm sure they wouldn't put it that way,
00:10:20but,
00:10:20uh,
00:10:21they wanted,
00:10:22they brought in somebody who was a diplomatic,
00:10:25very personable guy.
00:10:26And maybe that isn't working right now.
00:10:29You know,
00:10:29maybe,
00:10:30maybe they need to go the other way and get somebody in there.
00:10:33Who's going to toughen them up a little bit.
00:10:35You know,
00:10:36John,
00:10:36the,
00:10:37the other thing,
00:10:37you know,
00:10:37I do find it interesting.
00:10:39Girardi spent 10 years managing the Yankees and it was kind of like
00:10:43understood at least at the top of the,
00:10:45we didn't know this publicly,
00:10:46but it was understood at the top of the Yankee hierarchy that 2017 was
00:10:51going to be Girardi's last year that he kind of like,
00:10:53they felt like 10 years that he'd run its course.
00:10:55What was interesting is they got the game seven to the ALCS.
00:10:57They shocked everyone by going as far as they got.
00:11:00I wonder what actually would have happened if he got them to the world
00:11:02series,
00:11:03if there were no,
00:11:04maybe.
00:11:04And they,
00:11:05and why didn't he get there?
00:11:06Right.
00:11:06Exactly.
00:11:06You're just about to say it,
00:11:07right.
00:11:07They cheated.
00:11:08They got cheated out of it.
00:11:09Well,
00:11:09we got to ask him about that.
00:11:11I don't know if he's looking back on that 10,
00:11:13years later,
00:11:14but yeah,
00:11:15they,
00:11:15they should have,
00:11:16they should have won that.
00:11:17They,
00:11:18in retrospect,
00:11:19they believe they should have won that.
00:11:21And they might've won it if they,
00:11:23if Houston hadn't done the whole garbage can thing.
00:11:26You know,
00:11:27John,
00:11:27the thing I was going to say is like next year is Boone's 10th year.
00:11:30He does have a year left on his contract.
00:11:31See,
00:11:32to me,
00:11:32I think Hal Stein,
00:11:33if he hasn't done this and we don't know if he's done it or not,
00:11:36I thought like,
00:11:37Hey,
00:11:38give it the week to the weekend on Monday that just passed.
00:11:41Hal Steinbrenner should have had Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman,
00:11:45Tim Neering and Matt Daly and Mike Fishman.
00:11:48And like whoever he thinks is important in the organization sitting in his
00:11:51office.
00:11:51And he just should have said,
00:11:53Hey,
00:11:53if I keep this all the same,
00:11:55are we going to win the last game of the season?
00:11:58Like,
00:11:58like,
00:11:59like,
00:11:59give me the case.
00:12:00Like,
00:12:01I think you should look at Aaron Boone and say,
00:12:03give me the case for how,
00:12:06like,
00:12:06like I get it.
00:12:07There's some crapshoot element to this and maybe a large crapshoot.
00:12:10And I'd love to get back to that in a second,
00:12:12but we essentially lose the same way every year.
00:12:15We're not playing our best at this time of year.
00:12:18The last time they kind of play close to their best at this time of year was
00:12:21under Joe Girardi in 17.
00:12:23Like,
00:12:23and I think to some degree in 19 before they ran into the Astros again.
00:12:28Why are we not playing our best at this time of year?
00:12:30How many times do I have to listen to this injury or what?
00:12:33Like,
00:12:34like we're not playing our best.
00:12:35Is this about you?
00:12:37If it's not,
00:12:37give me your mission statement on why it's not or what's going to get
00:12:40better.
00:12:40If it's not,
00:12:41John,
00:12:41I am so with you.
00:12:42Then like,
00:12:43I don't see the value of bringing them back for one more year.
00:12:46If we're just going to do the insanity again,
00:12:48and it's going to be the same thing.
00:12:49I would have to hear a case.
00:12:51If I were outlaying all this money about why it would be different.
00:12:55Yeah,
00:12:56I I'm with you.
00:12:57Except I might make that two separate conversations.
00:13:00One with everybody,
00:13:01but Boone and one with Boone,
00:13:03you know,
00:13:04you maybe you'd be a little tougher boss than I am.
00:13:06I give Boone his hearing by himself.
00:13:09I wouldn't make him say it in front of everybody else,
00:13:11but you know,
00:13:13I think he might,
00:13:14maybe he's earned that,
00:13:15but yeah,
00:13:17I mean,
00:13:18I don't know.
00:13:19My,
00:13:19my one,
00:13:19one of my hesitation.
00:13:21Well,
00:13:21first of all,
00:13:22I do think Boone is generally a good manager.
00:13:25You know,
00:13:27that's one hesitation.
00:13:29But the other one is,
00:13:31who do you get to replace him at this stage with a lockout and the whole
00:13:35situation that it is who,
00:13:37you know,
00:13:37is going to be better than him.
00:13:39There are some good managers out there.
00:13:41I mean,
00:13:41obviously I think Runko Baldell,
00:13:42you know,
00:13:43there's a good group of guys who've done,
00:13:45I mean,
00:13:45I think you need somebody with experience who's done it before and has some
00:13:49experience.
00:13:50You know,
00:13:51you could bring Girardi back.
00:13:52You could,
00:13:52you could,
00:13:54I don't know,
00:13:54maybe it's crazy,
00:13:56but I wouldn't rule out Bruce Bochy.
00:13:58I don't know,
00:13:58but there isn't one person out there sitting there.
00:14:00Cause we know Alex Cora is not coming now,
00:14:02right?
00:14:02He's not going to manage this year.
00:14:04And he's,
00:14:05he's made that clear to me and to others that he's not going to do it.
00:14:09That's my hesitation about this.
00:14:12So the timing isn't great.
00:14:15So,
00:14:16you know,
00:14:16it's,
00:14:17it's a tough call,
00:14:17but you know,
00:14:20nine,
00:14:20nine years is it's a long time with a top payroll and a top rotation and
00:14:24Aaron judge and not to have done it.
00:14:27The boss would have done it six years,
00:14:29seven years ago.
00:14:30Probably.
00:14:30And that's probably unreasonable,
00:14:32but I think nine years,
00:14:34I think,
00:14:34you know,
00:14:35in 27 and 30 in the post season,
00:14:37you know,
00:14:38against most of the time,
00:14:40some of the time they're facing teams that they are expected to beat.
00:14:44And many of the times they were facing teams that were fairly comparable.
00:14:47So you should,
00:14:48you should be over 500 in that circumstance,
00:14:51right?
00:14:51You weren't,
00:14:51you're never facing anybody who's way better than you,
00:14:54at least on paper.
00:14:55And I'm with you on that world series.
00:14:57The Dodgers had a rotation of,
00:15:00Yamamoto Bueller coming off of injury and Jack Flaherty,
00:15:04who the Yankees didn't want.
00:15:05And with fair reason,
00:15:07I had a back situation and it went in five games.
00:15:10So I just think there've been a lot of chances here at this point.
00:15:15Yeah.
00:15:17John,
00:15:17I'm look,
00:15:18the other thing is like,
00:15:20not only is it under 500 in the post season,
00:15:22but like it's 0 and 8 against teams with,
00:15:25who finished the regular season ahead of them in the standings with better records or ties,
00:15:30but they won the tiebreaker.
00:15:32Like at some point,
00:15:33come on,
00:15:33man,
00:15:33like,
00:15:34it can't just be a weak AL central team showed up.
00:15:37Look at us,
00:15:38flex our muscles.
00:15:39You've got to be able to say,
00:15:40that's why I keep saying to me,
00:15:42it's about standing up and fighting.
00:15:45Can I'm going to throw out a name.
00:15:49Okay.
00:15:49I'm going to throw out a name.
00:15:50Like to me,
00:15:51if you're not going to change the manager,
00:15:55I'm,
00:15:55I think for want of a better term,
00:15:57and Tommy,
00:15:58you might have to believe,
00:15:59but I don't know if it's the Yankees kind of need a bit of an asshole to come in.
00:16:03Right.
00:16:04Like,
00:16:05like I think that they've never fully replaced Brett Gardner and CC Sabathia in their clubhouse.
00:16:10I think that there was a little fear factor that those two guys like offered,
00:16:14like,
00:16:14Oh,
00:16:15I know Gardner kind of went after guys.
00:16:18I know it.
00:16:19And I just think CC's physical reality and how team oriented he was scared guys.
00:16:24Like,
00:16:24I think fear helps a little.
00:16:27Is there some value?
00:16:28And by the way,
00:16:29I texted this guy yesterday and told him I might write about this at some point.
00:16:33How about making Jorge Posada the bench coach?
00:16:36And here's why.
00:16:39He hearkens to a time when the standard was higher.
00:16:44He understands this marketplace.
00:16:46Obviously it was very little with team Italy,
00:16:48but he's been in a dugout recently.
00:16:50And I don't think the Yankees need a tactical advantage,
00:16:53though.
00:16:54Why would Aaron Boone,
00:16:56third generation baseball,
00:16:57no more than Jorge Posada,
00:16:59second generation baseball?
00:17:00His dad was a scout for a real long time in the major leagues.
00:17:03I think he could help with the technical stuff.
00:17:05I think they need somebody to hold them to a higher standard and say,
00:17:09what are we doing here?
00:17:11Like,
00:17:11as we've heard a lot of stuff like CC on his podcast,
00:17:15Anthony Rizzo on a podcast,
00:17:17all these guys who to our face kept telling us things were great.
00:17:20Now that they're kind of someplace else,
00:17:22they're suggesting maybe there is some not high standards being held in the clubhouse.
00:17:27I'm just like,
00:17:29if it isn't Posada,
00:17:30I'm suggesting somebody who's tough minded and kind of like,
00:17:34like I think would meet nonsense with,
00:17:36are we kidding you?
00:17:37Are we kidding each other here?
00:17:38What is this?
00:17:39You know,
00:17:40I always like the bench coach to be a guy with a major league managing experience.
00:17:44If you can get it,
00:17:45because I do think the strategy is kind of important.
00:17:47I'd love to have Posada on the staff somewhere,
00:17:50but here's a guy who made,
00:17:51what did he make in his career?
00:17:52I don't know,
00:17:52$80 million or something.
00:17:53Is he going to take a job that pays him a couple hundred grand?
00:17:57I mean,
00:17:58I guess you could pay him more because he's only Posada,
00:18:00but you know,
00:18:01Pettit is sometimes hanging around and having fun and dabbling or whatever,
00:18:05but he's not a full time.
00:18:07No,
00:18:08but I'm saying to do a full time job.
00:18:10No,
00:18:10but I was just saying somebody like that has made that much money.
00:18:13Isn't going to do a full time job.
00:18:15And is Andy Pettit going to ever be a pitching coach?
00:18:18No,
00:18:18I don't.
00:18:18John,
00:18:19I was talking about a type as much,
00:18:23as much as anything.
00:18:24And I also need accountability.
00:18:25They need some accountability somehow in that clubhouse.
00:18:28I agree.
00:18:29And it's interesting that guys,
00:18:30when they leave,
00:18:31then they're big talkers about how things aren't going so good.
00:18:34Like Rizzo,
00:18:34right?
00:18:35He said,
00:18:35what did he start talking about?
00:18:37Jazz Chisholm.
00:18:37How about what if,
00:18:39I mean,
00:18:40to me,
00:18:40that looked clear.
00:18:41Like,
00:18:41you know,
00:18:42he's,
00:18:42we know Rizzo and judge are close,
00:18:44right?
00:18:44Judge went to watch him in the marathon.
00:18:46When the guy runs like I do,
00:18:48what did he run five?
00:18:49I shouldn't make fun.
00:18:50I couldn't do a marathon,
00:18:51but five hours.
00:18:52It was nice.
00:18:52They're nice.
00:18:53They're friends.
00:18:53But I mean,
00:18:55you know,
00:18:55I mean,
00:18:56couldn't judge have said that?
00:18:57Why did Rizzo have to be the one to say that about,
00:19:01about,
00:19:01and I didn't even get that criticism really,
00:19:04that he was,
00:19:05he was,
00:19:05he was surprised.
00:19:07Jazz said he was surprised.
00:19:09He was booed.
00:19:09I don't,
00:19:10I don't find that to be something that critical.
00:19:12I could think of a number of other things to be critical about,
00:19:15about net club outs than that.
00:19:17But it was clear,
00:19:19you know,
00:19:19from that to me,
00:19:21at least,
00:19:22especially with judge standing up there and telling you that Anthony Volpe
00:19:25is the,
00:19:25is the next Joe Morgan or whatever you did.
00:19:28Were you there for that?
00:19:29No.
00:19:30You went on that.
00:19:31All this great stuff about Volpe and obviously we have potential second
00:19:35baseman or Volpe,
00:19:37I guess maybe Luis Garcia,
00:19:39but Volpe or jazz.
00:19:41That was the choice.
00:19:42And obviously something about jazz probably must be irking a judge to have
00:19:49made that plea about how great Volpe is.
00:19:52Everybody loves Volpe now,
00:19:53which is great because he's a great guy.
00:19:55Fine.
00:19:56And he certainly turned himself around and he's a second baseman now.
00:19:59I think it's the right position for him.
00:20:01And he's doing well,
00:20:02but I mean,
00:20:03it's come out and say what you're really thinking rather than,
00:20:06you know,
00:20:06I Volpe's the greatest player of all time.
00:20:09If there's something about jazz,
00:20:10tell him or say something.
00:20:12I don't know.
00:20:13Maybe he has behind the scenes,
00:20:15but whatever it was said to jazz has not worked really.
00:20:19And it's unfortunate.
00:20:19The guy's a great talent.
00:20:21I think he's a good kid,
00:20:22but they,
00:20:24whoever it is in that clubhouse,
00:20:26Boone,
00:20:26they did not get the best out of him.
00:20:29And that's,
00:20:29it's on him,
00:20:30but it's on them as well.
00:20:31You know,
00:20:32John,
00:20:32I don't know if you saw it went viral yesterday,
00:20:34uh,
00:20:35that the,
00:20:36the play where jazz doesn't cover first base on a bunt play,
00:20:42they overlaid it with Enrique Hernandez playing the same exact distance from
00:20:47first base,
00:20:47which was like a good distance of the 90 feet,
00:20:50about 65 feet away.
00:20:51And Enrique Hernandez sprints and gets the out.
00:20:54But they also then showed that jazz had messed up the same play three other
00:20:59times,
00:20:59you know,
00:20:59multiple other times.
00:21:00Yeah.
00:21:01I,
00:21:01I actually,
00:21:02again,
00:21:02I think on the,
00:21:03uh,
00:21:03on the webcast last week,
00:21:05I challenged,
00:21:06uh,
00:21:06like John boy,
00:21:07not challenge.
00:21:08Like I'm like,
00:21:08I don't have the technical skills for this.
00:21:10I was like the,
00:21:11the wild throw he makes at second base when he has no shot,
00:21:15get the double play.
00:21:16I said,
00:21:17I've seen that play two,
00:21:19three,
00:21:19four times this year and it never ended well.
00:21:21And the fact that nobody corrected either of these things,
00:21:26the bad bunt defense,
00:21:28the bad throw.
00:21:28Now that leads to a question and I'm willing to blame whoever is the right
00:21:33person to blame.
00:21:34If the answer is you could tell jazz Chisholm every day,
00:21:38jazz,
00:21:38don't make that play jazz cover first.
00:21:40And ultimately he is not going to do it because he can't concentrate or
00:21:43doesn't care or whatever.
00:21:44Then that's a Brian Cashman problem.
00:21:47You shouldn't have acquired them.
00:21:48And once it became a problem,
00:21:49you need to get them out.
00:21:51He's not going to win you games at the biggest time of year.
00:21:53He's going to cost you.
00:21:54If it is correctable,
00:21:56I blame the institution,
00:21:57boom infield coaches,
00:21:59the captain of the team judge again.
00:22:01Where is the,
00:22:02the,
00:22:02the thing like,
00:22:03like someplace in there,
00:22:04there is tremendous blame for me.
00:22:06And it starts with jazz do better,
00:22:09but like either he can't get them out or he can,
00:22:13and you didn't lean on them enough.
00:22:15Yeah.
00:22:15I mean,
00:22:15that should be correctable.
00:22:16He's,
00:22:16he's a smart kid.
00:22:18He's he,
00:22:18I mean,
00:22:19you know that you speak,
00:22:20speak to him.
00:22:20He's not a dummy.
00:22:21He's a smart kid,
00:22:22but he's smart.
00:22:23Well,
00:22:24you can,
00:22:24I think that's correctable.
00:22:26It is interesting that Kiki Aaron is,
00:22:27what is that?
00:22:27His fifth position,
00:22:28second base,
00:22:29anywhere to go.
00:22:30Jazz is the full-time starting second baseman and,
00:22:33and doesn't know where to go at this point.
00:22:36You know,
00:22:36and that throw,
00:22:37I,
00:22:37you know,
00:22:38you gotta,
00:22:39once you do it again,
00:22:40you gotta say,
00:22:41I messed up.
00:22:42He's,
00:22:42he had no regrets about that.
00:22:44It was very,
00:22:44anyway,
00:22:45I don't want to be in the 10th person picking on jazz after it's over.
00:22:48And his Yankee tenure is over.
00:22:51I don't blame Cashman.
00:22:52I,
00:22:53I think people understood that he's a great talent that needed to be corralled a
00:22:57bit.
00:22:58And they haven't been able to do it for whatever reason.
00:23:01It's maybe the next team can,
00:23:02I think jazz has great years ahead of them.
00:23:04He,
00:23:05he is going to have a rough off season though.
00:23:07He's not going to have the off season that he expected based on what
00:23:10happened this year.
00:23:11And I mean,
00:23:12I don't,
00:23:12and I don't blame him saying,
00:23:14I want to come back to it.
00:23:14What's he going to say when he's in the Yankee club?
00:23:16I mean,
00:23:17I mean,
00:23:17Soto didn't say,
00:23:18I want to come back to the Yankees.
00:23:19Cause Soto had a different script.
00:23:22Jazz didn't have that script.
00:23:23He had the,
00:23:24you know,
00:23:24I like the Yankees.
00:23:25It's a great place,
00:23:26whatever script.
00:23:28That's fine.
00:23:29I,
00:23:29I,
00:23:29I don't,
00:23:30I don't blame him for that,
00:23:31but I really don't see that happening at this point.
00:23:33I think,
00:23:34I think he needs to move on.
00:23:36I think he'll have a good career,
00:23:37but it's going to be somewhere else at this point.
00:23:39Yeah,
00:23:40John,
00:23:41I,
00:23:41I think that it's obvious that,
00:23:43that Chisholm and Grisham became the face of something.
00:23:47Maybe Ryan McMahon too.
00:23:48And I would say for sure,
00:23:50Chisholm and Grisham who are free agents won't be back.
00:23:52And if the Yankees find a way to eat money or take on money,
00:23:56I don't think McMahon will be back either.
00:23:59The,
00:24:00the,
00:24:00I,
00:24:00my suspicion is this is for other shows as we actually get into the off
00:24:04season and talk about it.
00:24:06Why don't we continue to drill down on issues about what the manager is
00:24:10responsible for the Yankees himself,
00:24:13Joe Girardi,
00:24:14who knows well,
00:24:15what it means to manage a big market team.
00:24:17He did it with both the Phillies.
00:24:18And of course the Yankees won a championship with the Yankees.
00:24:21He's our guest and joins us next on the show.
00:24:29John and I are so thankful to be joined by Joe Girardi,
00:24:32three-time champion catcher with the Yankees,
00:24:35the last champion manager with the,
00:24:38with the New York Yankees.
00:24:40Joe,
00:24:41thank you so much for joining us on the show.
00:24:43Well,
00:24:43it's great to be here,
00:24:44Joel and John,
00:24:45and I'm,
00:24:45I'm looking forward to this.
00:24:47So Joe,
00:24:48we,
00:24:48we,
00:24:49we had this long discussion before you came on under the first,
00:24:51first segment we did together.
00:24:53And I want to put it in the hands of manager.
00:24:55Cause I,
00:24:56you,
00:24:56you have to live this.
00:24:57We were asking a jazz Chisholm,
00:25:00big picture question,
00:25:01which was,
00:25:01uh,
00:25:02I don't know if you saw the overlay of that,
00:25:05like him and Enrique Hernandez had were positioned the same on a
00:25:09bunt play.
00:25:10He got lost in no man's land.
00:25:11Enrique Hernandez sprints covers first.
00:25:13And then they found like two more or three more times where jazz made the
00:25:17same mistake.
00:25:18I will tell you the throw that jazz made off balance.
00:25:21In game,
00:25:22uh,
00:25:23two of the AL division series.
00:25:26I've seen him make three or four times this year,
00:25:28never with a positive outcome.
00:25:30Is there such a thing as players that are unreachable?
00:25:33Like you could literally say every day to certain player,
00:25:36Hey man,
00:25:38never off balance like that again,
00:25:39or Hey,
00:25:40this is the bunt play.
00:25:41You've got to go full sprint.
00:25:43Yeah.
00:25:43And it's never going to change.
00:25:44Or is this a failure of leadership?
00:25:47Somehow you've got to find a way for a player to do the right thing.
00:25:53Well,
00:25:53I'm sure they've discussed it many times,
00:25:55what his job is as the second baseman.
00:25:57And for whatever reason,
00:25:59he doesn't get over there.
00:26:01I'm of the belief that no player is unreachable.
00:26:04I'm going to keep trying until I die.
00:26:07I mean,
00:26:07that's just who I am.
00:26:09And I just think sometimes jazz gets lost in the moment.
00:26:14I think it's probably a focus situation more than anything.
00:26:17And understanding that you need to play this out in your head before it
00:26:21happens.
00:26:22And maybe that's not one of his strengths.
00:26:25He's a very naturally gifted athlete,
00:26:28but sometimes the way of equaling the player field,
00:26:31isn't giving a person as much focus as someone that's not so naturally
00:26:36gifted.
00:26:36And it's unfortunate.
00:26:38Like the throw.
00:26:40And sometimes as a player,
00:26:42you have to understand,
00:26:43I just need to eat it.
00:26:44And we'll talk a lot about a player has to be able to slow the game down.
00:26:50Some guys just can't do it.
00:26:52They were not gifted with that.
00:26:53And that would be a question if I had for jazz.
00:26:56Joe,
00:26:57it's great to have you on,
00:26:58not just because you are a Northwestern wildcat.
00:27:00The only other one we've had on the show.
00:27:02Ranked number 25,
00:27:03by the way.
00:27:04Can you believe that?
00:27:04And what a stadium.
00:27:05Isn't that fantastic?
00:27:07I'm sorry.
00:27:07We're leaving Joel out of this conversation.
00:27:09NYU's football team is as usual,
00:27:11zero and zero right now.
00:27:13So they haven't lost.
00:27:14No,
00:27:14no undefeated for about 60 years now.
00:27:17The violets.
00:27:18I'm shocked.
00:27:19Joe,
00:27:20Joe,
00:27:21Joe and I have been talking together about the team and we,
00:27:26we wonder if the team,
00:27:27the issue is the team isn't tough enough.
00:27:29Is there enough accountability?
00:27:31Cause the talent should be there.
00:27:33Do you have any thoughts?
00:27:34I mean,
00:27:34you obviously are there a lot.
00:27:36What,
00:27:37what do you think has gone on with this team that they have not been able,
00:27:40you wore that number 28 for,
00:27:42you know,
00:27:42a while,
00:27:43and they'd still be wearing that 28 today.
00:27:46Why can't they get over the hump?
00:27:48What's going on there?
00:27:49I think health continues to haunt this team.
00:27:51I really do.
00:27:53I mean,
00:27:53you looked at you're playing without Aaron judge for four and a half months
00:27:57for four months or whatever it is.
00:27:59You don't have him in the playoffs.
00:28:00You don't have Stanton for five months.
00:28:03He's out.
00:28:04You lose guys during the course of the year.
00:28:06And there were a lot of thumb injuries this year for whatever reason.
00:28:10And they come back after 10 days.
00:28:12I'm not sure they're completely healed.
00:28:14I believe the talent was there.
00:28:16I expected them to go further,
00:28:18but without Aaron judge,
00:28:20it changes the whole complexion of the lion.
00:28:23And even if he was somewhat not the typical Aaron judge,
00:28:27because he missed so much time,
00:28:29he still changes the line.
00:28:30They're still careful.
00:28:31It's one swing always from being a two or a three run home run.
00:28:34He walks a lot.
00:28:36He still does all of that.
00:28:37And I just don't think they were ever to ever really had their full lineup
00:28:42to where they felt good about it.
00:28:43They were either missing starting pitchers or they were missing key position
00:28:48players.
00:28:48And I believe there's enough talent there now.
00:28:52Are there spots where you'd love to see more production?
00:28:56Yes,
00:28:57but sometimes you get production from spots.
00:28:59You don't necessarily intend.
00:29:02And the Yankees offense was a far cry from what it's been in the past.
00:29:06And most of that has to do to me with two guys that were missing.
00:29:10They weren't able to contribute.
00:29:12Now moving forward,
00:29:13can they upgrade?
00:29:15You can always upgrade positions.
00:29:16You know,
00:29:17I was on a team that won three championships over four years and they sure
00:29:21could have upgraded over me.
00:29:22I mean,
00:29:23that's the bottom line,
00:29:24but it's the sum of all the parts.
00:29:26And I think the sum was pretty close to being a championship team.
00:29:30You can't have Aaron judge not playing in any of those games.
00:29:34You can't have Stanton not playing in any of those games,
00:29:37expecting him to be productive when he hasn't had an at-bat in five months.
00:29:41Can't happen.
00:29:44Joe,
00:29:44you,
00:29:44you mentioned your championship teams.
00:29:46I think it has something to do similarly with your championship team as a manager.
00:29:52And I'm going to go back.
00:29:53John was bringing it up because I,
00:29:55but it's been something I'm harping on.
00:29:57I've watched the Yankees in this entire run and I never leave the series going,
00:30:01wow,
00:30:01that other team was so much more talented than the Yankees.
00:30:04I just don't believe that.
00:30:05I believe even without judge and Stanton,
00:30:07it isn't like I sat there and go,
00:30:09Hey,
00:30:10Tampa Bay is a sweep better than the Yankees talent wise.
00:30:14I think that those championship teams had a fortitude and an internal accountability level that was staggeringly good.
00:30:23And you had two of the last two players to me who did it great.
00:30:26And they were CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner.
00:30:29And I think those guys,
00:30:31as much as third base,
00:30:33left-handed pitcher,
00:30:34whatever,
00:30:35is missing.
00:30:36I don't feel the edge,
00:30:40the,
00:30:41the fear in the group that if I mess up that play over and over again,
00:30:45the accountability isn't just going to come from Aaron Boone or coaches.
00:30:49It's going to come into,
00:30:50I think players have to take care of the game.
00:30:53And I don't get that from this Yankees.
00:30:55I think they all do happy talk and living on reality.
00:30:57I wonder what you think about kind of internal leadership.
00:31:00And if you see it with this group.
00:31:02Yeah.
00:31:02It's hard to say because I'm not in the clubhouse every day,
00:31:05but there are things that happen.
00:31:07You wonder like,
00:31:07is someone saying anything like you said you would have did the same thing over again?
00:31:12No,
00:31:12you can't do the same thing.
00:31:13It didn't work.
00:31:15Some of the base running cues,
00:31:17all the sliding over the bases.
00:31:18Like someone's got to say some enough is enough.
00:31:21And sometimes though,
00:31:23a player needs to be sent down and like have a wake up call and say,
00:31:28look,
00:31:28you need to do this better.
00:31:29I think it happened with Anthony Bopey.
00:31:31I think he was better when he came back up because he got sent down and said,
00:31:35Hey,
00:31:35I can't keep doing what I'm doing.
00:31:37It's not working.
00:31:38And I think you have to sometimes have a little bit more of that.
00:31:42And it's not always young players that it's happening to,
00:31:45but someone has to step up and say enough is enough.
00:31:48And the other thing that I see other teams,
00:31:50I think do is they understand their role really well.
00:31:55Like you look at Tampa and we talk about how Tampa fundamentally is really good.
00:31:59They bought,
00:32:00they do all these things.
00:32:01Well,
00:32:01besides the,
00:32:02the first four hitters don't bunt,
00:32:05right?
00:32:06They play big boy baseball,
00:32:07but the next five guys absolutely know what their role is.
00:32:11My role is to get on base is to steal a base is to sacrifice a safety squeeze.
00:32:16It's,
00:32:17it's not to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
00:32:18And I'm not going to try to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
00:32:21I think the Yankees bottom half of the order could do a better job.
00:32:25Imagine if jazz had a three 50 on base percentage,
00:32:27how many bases he would steal.
00:32:29It would be off the charts and it would really help the team win.
00:32:33And I think you have to understand who you are.
00:32:36Not everyone's meant to hit home runs.
00:32:38Not everyone's meant to drive the ball park,
00:32:41drive the ball,
00:32:42you know,
00:32:43into the gaps all the time.
00:32:44Sometimes your job is just to get on base and create habit.
00:32:48You know,
00:32:49Caballero,
00:32:49when he was on base,
00:32:50he created habit.
00:32:52And I think we get caught up in getting your a swing off all the time off that you forget.
00:32:58You got to play the game.
00:32:59And against these pitchers,
00:33:01if you're trying to get your a swing off all the time,
00:33:03you're going to struggle mightily.
00:33:04The teams that are being successful are the teams that are putting the ball in play and finding ways to
00:33:10get a runner over,
00:33:10get a runner in.
00:33:11And I,
00:33:11and I know you can say,
00:33:13Hey,
00:33:13over the last five years,
00:33:15the team that has hit the most home runs,
00:33:1783% of the time has won the game.
00:33:20Okay.
00:33:20But is that what they're trying to do?
00:33:22I mean,
00:33:22I think you can yang when a team's yanging.
00:33:25And I think that's what you see Tampa do really well.
00:33:27Like everyone has been focusing on velocity in the,
00:33:32in the four seamer that has ride.
00:33:34So what the,
00:33:34what did Tampa do?
00:33:36All the hitters are focusing on it.
00:33:38We're going to throw 21% change.
00:33:39That's where everyone else is throwing 11% or under.
00:33:42And guess what?
00:33:43They had success.
00:33:44So I think you have to be able to adapt to the times and zigzag a little bit to be
00:33:50successful.
00:33:50And sometimes I think the Yankees could do a better job at that.
00:33:54That was an interesting point on Volpe.
00:33:56I think that was probably a wake up call and he certainly did come back a different player.
00:34:01Look,
00:34:01going forward,
00:34:01what do you think about the different positional choices that they have to make?
00:34:06Could Volpe be the second baseman and full time?
00:34:09You think,
00:34:09what do they do at third?
00:34:11Is there anything in particular you're looking at where they can improve?
00:34:15And we all agree.
00:34:15They have a good team.
00:34:17Obviously it wasn't quite good enough.
00:34:19Where can they improve?
00:34:20Well,
00:34:21I think,
00:34:21I think he will see Volpe.
00:34:22I think he's going to get every opportunity to play second base next year.
00:34:26And I think with the uncertainty with the labor dispute,
00:34:31I don't know that teams can do a lot.
00:34:34I really don't.
00:34:35I think you're going to have to kind of stand packed to see where you are and see what comes
00:34:39out of this.
00:34:40I would like to see Ben Rice play more first base and become like,
00:34:44I would love to see Ben Rice in like two weeks,
00:34:47really start getting after playing first base,
00:34:50like getting with someone that's really familiar with the position and figuring out because you'd love to leave.
00:34:58Some days for Stanton.
00:35:00You got to leave some days from judge.
00:35:02And I know you have Garcia,
00:35:03but I think that I don't want him to be a full-time DH at such a young age.
00:35:08I want him to be able to play a position.
00:35:10So it opens it up for other people and their base.
00:35:14I'm not sure what they're going to do because again,
00:35:17of the labor situation.
00:35:19And I don't know how many third basemen are really out there.
00:35:22I saw something I read the other day about a young man in Japan that could possibly.
00:35:26Yeah.
00:35:29I mean,
00:35:30if you have an opportunity to get him and you can make it work,
00:35:33it might be something they want to do.
00:35:35You know,
00:35:36Joe,
00:35:36you,
00:35:36you,
00:35:37you hit on something I literally wrote about earlier today with Ben Rice,
00:35:41which is,
00:35:42and I see to me,
00:35:44Ben Rice is following the Kyle Schwarber arc.
00:35:46They were guys who were catching,
00:35:48who couldn't really maybe do that.
00:35:51And what you wanted to do mainly was have them hit.
00:35:54They kind of have a power from the left side.
00:35:56Some strikeouts,
00:35:57lots of walks,
00:35:58et cetera.
00:35:59I don't think anybody ever thought diligence was a problem with Schwarber.
00:36:03I don't think anybody would think diligence is a problem with Rice.
00:36:06And if you remember the Red Sox try to play Schwarber at first base,
00:36:10and ultimately he just played himself into DH.
00:36:13Do you think you,
00:36:15because I think this is an important issue for Yankee flexibility.
00:36:18Can you work enough to become major league average if you're Ben Rice,
00:36:22or are there certain body types that you could literally go out there and you
00:36:26don't have the agility,
00:36:28the first step,
00:36:29the athleticism,
00:36:30something where you could work at it diligently.
00:36:32And he's just always going to be below average.
00:36:35I think that's the case,
00:36:37Joel.
00:36:38I think that is a possibility that it's just never going to be what you want.
00:36:42You're going to be,
00:36:42you're going to want a little bit more,
00:36:44but because of the Yankees situation,
00:36:47I think you have to at least try.
00:36:49Yes,
00:36:49no doubt.
00:36:50That's the bottom line because Garcia is going to be a free agent.
00:36:53I think after next year,
00:36:55judge is older.
00:36:55Stanton will be gone,
00:36:56but you know,
00:36:57Aaron judge physically,
00:36:58you want him on the field as much as you can.
00:37:01And if it means DH him more,
00:37:03I think the Yankees really need to look at that because he's such an important
00:37:06right hand at bat to that lineup.
00:37:07And if he can just be average,
00:37:10we're not asking you to be more than average,
00:37:11just be average.
00:37:12It gives the Yankees so much more flexibility.
00:37:16Yeah.
00:37:17I looked it up because I couldn't think of his first name.
00:37:20Teruaki Sato is the third baseman from Japan that everybody's talking about.
00:37:26And that is something that the Yankees might look at.
00:37:29I know that the Yankees and Mets have been connected to Sato.
00:37:33I want to ask you about looking back at your managerial tenure,
00:37:37with the Yankees 10 years.
00:37:40You won a championship,
00:37:41the last one that they won number 27.
00:37:44And you were,
00:37:45you were let go at the end of 2017.
00:37:49And you had one series where you guys came back from O2 and beat Cleveland.
00:37:54And then the next series you lost to Houston,
00:38:00a team that had the trash can.
00:38:02We didn't know that was going on at the time.
00:38:04So,
00:38:04I mean,
00:38:05and they won all the four games that they won.
00:38:07They won four out of the seven games.
00:38:09They won them all at home.
00:38:11You know,
00:38:12you know,
00:38:13I even think about this.
00:38:14Do you even go back and think about it and look at it and think of what,
00:38:17what if I had won that or whatever?
00:38:19I don't know.
00:38:20Maybe the Yankees had made up their mind that 10 years was enough time,
00:38:23or I don't know.
00:38:24Time is up anyway.
00:38:25I don't know.
00:38:26How do you go back and look at your Yankee team?
00:38:28Because by and large,
00:38:29looking at it was a damn good one.
00:38:30And you did win the last championship.
00:38:32And in 2017,
00:38:35you or the Dodgers deserve to win that championship.
00:38:38Yeah.
00:38:38I mean,
00:38:39it was difficult when I didn't come back and it was,
00:38:43you know,
00:38:43I love my time there.
00:38:44I love managing in New York.
00:38:46I love being part of the New York Yankees family and everything,
00:38:49but I'm a big equalizer fan,
00:38:53John,
00:38:53and I'm a big Denzel Washington fan.
00:38:58And he says in the movie equalizer three,
00:39:01I'm where I'm supposed to be.
00:39:03I'm where I'm supposed to be.
00:39:04I'm happy with where I'm at.
00:39:06My life is good.
00:39:07Kim and I are doing great.
00:39:08The kids are great.
00:39:11But yeah,
00:39:12did I enjoy it?
00:39:13And did I really want to leave?
00:39:15No,
00:39:15but it happens.
00:39:16I had 10 years.
00:39:17I mean,
00:39:17Joe Torrey had 12.
00:39:19He won four championships.
00:39:20So I did pretty good.
00:39:21You know,
00:39:22I only won like a quarter of what he won and I got to stay around 10
00:39:26years and he stayed 12.
00:39:27So,
00:39:28you know,
00:39:29I think every manager has a shelf life in a city.
00:39:32I do believe that.
00:39:34At the time,
00:39:35would I love for it to be extended?
00:39:37Yes.
00:39:38But am I where I'm supposed to believe?
00:39:40I believe that is yes too.
00:39:42You're talking to the wrong guy on,
00:39:45I've seen all three equalizer movies.
00:39:47I'm sure John has not because I would say is Denzel.
00:39:50The third one,
00:39:51they're in Italy.
00:39:52All right.
00:39:53Is he saying I'm where I'm supposed to be?
00:39:55And he was in Italy already.
00:39:57Right.
00:39:58Like in that movie.
00:39:59Yes.
00:39:59Well,
00:40:00by the way,
00:40:00Joel,
00:40:01I based Kim and I's vacation.
00:40:04We went to Italy off of that movie.
00:40:06I said,
00:40:08I want to go to that town.
00:40:09I want to climb the stairs of the church and I want to sit in that little
00:40:14cafe.
00:40:14And we did it all.
00:40:15It's the town is called the Trani and it's right next to a Malfi.
00:40:19And we climbed this.
00:40:20We did it all.
00:40:21And I loved it.
00:40:22Nice.
00:40:23You didn't think we were managing.
00:40:24I couldn't do that.
00:40:25Hey,
00:40:26Hey,
00:40:26Northwestern over there.
00:40:27Hey man,
00:40:27you didn't think we were going to go there.
00:40:28Right.
00:40:29I didn't.
00:40:29So,
00:40:30so look,
00:40:31look,
00:40:32this is a tough question because I think that we all like and admire Aaron
00:40:38Boone.
00:40:39Right.
00:40:40And I'm one of these people.
00:40:41I have now,
00:40:42it's been over 30 years since I suggested anybody lose their job.
00:40:46I just think it's wrong to say a man should lose his job,
00:40:49but you mentioned shelf life.
00:40:51Do you think Boone has reached the shelf life?
00:40:54Like,
00:40:54in other words,
00:40:54if you,
00:40:55if we're watching some repetitive stuff,
00:40:57yeah.
00:40:57Do you think that a new voice is needed?
00:41:00Because not because Joe Girardi was not a bad manager.
00:41:04Right.
00:41:05Like if somebody hired you today,
00:41:07Joe,
00:41:08I would say,
00:41:08Oh,
00:41:08they got a good major league manager in Joe Girardi.
00:41:11If the Yankees fired Aaron Boone today and somebody hiring him tomorrow,
00:41:15go,
00:41:15Oh,
00:41:15Aaron Boone has his shelf life to make a difference here.
00:41:20Been reached.
00:41:21I don't think so.
00:41:22And here's why I'll say no.
00:41:24I think you could argue this.
00:41:25It was his best year of managing.
00:41:27I think he got the most out of this team during the course of the season
00:41:32with all they had to deal with and,
00:41:34and,
00:41:35and the way they won games,
00:41:36he had to flip the way they won games.
00:41:38They had to win them from a pitching standpoint,
00:41:41different from some of the years past where they would win by just.
00:41:44Out slugging people.
00:41:45He couldn't do that this year.
00:41:47And I think he ran the bullpen extremely well and got the most out of those
00:41:51guys.
00:41:51You think about the progress that Hedrick made,
00:41:55what he did with Blackburn.
00:41:57I think you could argue this was his best year.
00:42:00They didn't get it done in the playoffs.
00:42:02And one of the things that reared its ugly head a lot during this season was
00:42:07the offense.
00:42:08And can you say that that's his fault?
00:42:10I don't think so.
00:42:12I,
00:42:12to me,
00:42:13that's not his fault.
00:42:14I just don't think the guys had the years that they projected them to have,
00:42:19or some of the guys just aren't as good as they thought they would be.
00:42:25John,
00:42:25can I jump in and just follow on that real quick?
00:42:27Is,
00:42:29let's do another movie that has a lot of Italy base thing,
00:42:33which is Godfather.
00:42:33Do you think that the managing jobs are distinct regular season and post
00:42:37season,
00:42:38and that you almost need a wartime consigliere right to like,
00:42:42like a different kind of urgency or whatever.
00:42:46And is,
00:42:46is there failure there by this manager not being reading the moment?
00:42:52I don't know.
00:42:53Like,
00:42:53or,
00:42:53or do you not believe that?
00:42:56I think he did read the moment and I think he did try to change course
00:43:01because he changed the lineup,
00:43:03but yes,
00:43:04he got production out of those guys he put in,
00:43:06but the other guys he was expecting production,
00:43:08he didn't get it from.
00:43:10And that's in such a short series.
00:43:13It's,
00:43:14it's really hard to me to judge a manager unless he does something that's
00:43:19truly egregious.
00:43:20Like,
00:43:20and I can't say he did anything that was truly egregious.
00:43:23It's it's a short series and these guys didn't hit.
00:43:26And it's not like you were facing a team that won 81 games.
00:43:31You were facing the best team in the American league during the course of
00:43:35the season.
00:43:36You were facing some really good starting pitching.
00:43:39And again,
00:43:40offensively,
00:43:41I thought they were challenged the whole year.
00:43:43And a lot of that was without Aaron judge,
00:43:45there are different offensive club.
00:43:47And he wasn't there for him in the playoffs.
00:43:50Yeah.
00:43:51I'm like,
00:43:52Joel,
00:43:52I don't like to say the team should move on.
00:43:54And I rarely do in this case.
00:43:57I told Aaron that I was going to do this.
00:43:59And I suggested that just because it's been nine years.
00:44:01And Joe,
00:44:02you didn't grow up.
00:44:03You grew up in Illinois before going to Northwestern.
00:44:06You didn't grow up in the Steinbrenner era as a child and twenties and all
00:44:11that.
00:44:12And I did.
00:44:12And you know,
00:44:13we had 15 managers in 20 years and the same guy five times.
00:44:18And of course that was nuts.
00:44:20And I do think Aaron Boone is a good manager and he'd be snapped up quickly by
00:44:25somebody else if he was let go.
00:44:27And so I'm not denigrating him in that way.
00:44:30But are you,
00:44:31are you surprised at all?
00:44:32I mean,
00:44:32you know,
00:44:32how,
00:44:33but are you surprised at all that how has gone completely to the other side of
00:44:37his father and is totally the opposite?
00:44:40And is,
00:44:41you know,
00:44:42for better or what you could say is the most loyal or you could look at it
00:44:45another way.
00:44:47How do you look at it?
00:44:48And does it surprise you?
00:44:49I mean,
00:44:50given that you weren't,
00:44:50you didn't grow up in New York and you didn't see the managers fired every
00:44:54year,
00:44:54but still nine years,
00:44:55it is the New York Yankees.
00:44:57It is a little bit for me surprising.
00:45:00I'm not surprised.
00:45:02Again,
00:45:02I'm going to say,
00:45:03I think it's probably,
00:45:04you know,
00:45:05if you look at the season,
00:45:06people would argue this is the best year of managing their moons career.
00:45:10So how are you going to fire someone that had the best year and lost in a
00:45:14three game series?
00:45:16I mean,
00:45:17it makes no sense because you've got to get there.
00:45:20And what he did to get him there was pretty good.
00:45:22I mean,
00:45:23again,
00:45:23he had people in and out of the lineups.
00:45:25He had starters in and out of the lineup.
00:45:28When it comes to starting pitching.
00:45:30And I think that's why I think Hal is much more even keel.
00:45:34And,
00:45:35and,
00:45:35and,
00:45:35and I can tell you that from working with like,
00:45:37how would come visit me once a homestand.
00:45:40He was there once a homestand in my office,
00:45:42maybe twice.
00:45:42And we would just talk baseball and how was very even keel.
00:45:46And he would say,
00:45:46what do you need?
00:45:47And,
00:45:47you know,
00:45:47this,
00:45:48that,
00:45:48and ask questions.
00:45:49And that's the way he always was.
00:45:51And I think that's why you don't see these abrupt changes.
00:45:54Joe,
00:45:55can I go back to something you said earlier that I find interesting?
00:45:58And I think it's about the modern game.
00:45:59I think a lot of people who use the term analytics couldn't give you,
00:46:02and critically,
00:46:03couldn't give you a sentence about what analytics actually are.
00:46:06They just like beating up on it.
00:46:09But I,
00:46:09you,
00:46:10you were talking about the a swing and like,
00:46:13like to me,
00:46:15there's just not enough playing of the scoreboard.
00:46:17The scoreboard is always telling you what you need in any moment.
00:46:21It's the eighth inning and there's a runner on third and the score is tied.
00:46:24You might not need your a swing.
00:46:25What you need is the runner to score like that runner must score.
00:46:29And like,
00:46:30again,
00:46:30this is where I'm wondering if there's some general failure with the Yankees.
00:46:34If you were to say that analytics is winning a jump ball,
00:46:38like,
00:46:38like on a piece of paper in casino baseball,
00:46:42taking your a swing wins over 162 games,
00:46:45I would assume.
00:46:46Right.
00:46:46But then you're not playing the game.
00:46:49You're not playing the game.
00:46:51And the Yankees,
00:46:53for example,
00:46:53I think are among the foremost,
00:46:55by the way,
00:46:56this is all legal at looking at pitch tipping.
00:46:59Like they have multiple people in their office working on it at all time.
00:47:02But I think that makes them addicted to looking for these tells and not playing the game,
00:47:07like not playing the game.
00:47:09And I just wonder,
00:47:11again,
00:47:11where a manager coaches players come into any of this to say,
00:47:15Hey man,
00:47:16see the scoreboard.
00:47:17We need to have more runs than the other team at the end of the game.
00:47:20Not like greater exit velocity,
00:47:23not all this.
00:47:25Where,
00:47:25how do you live in that in both worlds?
00:47:28That was a long question.
00:47:29I'm sorry,
00:47:30Joe.
00:47:30No,
00:47:30I,
00:47:30no,
00:47:31I,
00:47:31well,
00:47:32Tampa does Milwaukee does.
00:47:34I mean,
00:47:35I think Toronto did last year when they were such a high contact team.
00:47:41I think that it's what is preached to kids from day one,
00:47:46when they get in this game now.
00:47:48And I think it's all the way through because they know they get paid for.
00:47:53They know they get chosen because of an elite skill.
00:47:57Well,
00:47:58the elite skill is knowing how to win to me.
00:48:01It's not one swing.
00:48:02It's not one pitch.
00:48:03It's knowing how to win and how to beat the other person.
00:48:06And I think we've lost that because I think we do so much training away from the competitive part that
00:48:13we've lost that.
00:48:14And I think we have to get back to that more.
00:48:18And to me,
00:48:19it's not about your ace wing.
00:48:21It's about how many clubs do you have in your bag?
00:48:23And can you do like what you're talking about,
00:48:25what the team needs you to do?
00:48:27And if you can do that,
00:48:30we're going to win a ton of games.
00:48:32And,
00:48:32you know,
00:48:33maybe we don't win the world series this year because the team was better,
00:48:36but Toronto lost to the Dodgers.
00:48:39You could have argued that Toronto should have won that series really easily.
00:48:43Toronto could have won that series.
00:48:44The Phillies lost to the Dodgers.
00:48:46Now the Phillies were probably a little bit more like the Dodgers than Toronto was.
00:48:51Phillies,
00:48:51they were a big ace wing kind of team in a sense,
00:48:54and they had a chance to beat them.
00:48:56So I think either way you can beat them,
00:48:59but I think we have to get back to how do we compete?
00:49:04And I think we've lost some of that.
00:49:08I think we train to get paid and to get picked.
00:49:11We don't compete to get paid to get picked.
00:49:16Okay.
00:49:17Last one for me,
00:49:18Joe,
00:49:18I have been Italy.
00:49:20I've not seen the equalizer,
00:49:22but I certainly take you at your word that you're happy doing your broadcasting
00:49:27and being a father of three and a husband and enjoying life.
00:49:32But you're a young man,
00:49:33certainly by my standard.
00:49:35And you're obviously in excellent shape.
00:49:37You still,
00:49:37I don't think you,
00:49:38didn't you,
00:49:38you cut sweets out of the clubhouse I recall,
00:49:40right?
00:49:41You don't see that.
00:49:42That is not true.
00:49:46As a club,
00:49:47like I get blamed for all these things that I laugh at as a club.
00:49:50We chose,
00:49:51we wanted players to eat healthy.
00:49:53So they brought our nutritionists.
00:49:54They would have a green card,
00:49:56a yellow card and a red card telling you how much you could eat of each.
00:49:59Right.
00:50:00I used to bring donuts in on Sunday.
00:50:02I used to bring them in.
00:50:04Yes.
00:50:05I don't need a lot of sweets.
00:50:07I just need one bite of something and I'm good.
00:50:09But I want players well conditioned and you can have sweets.
00:50:15I'm glad you cleared that up.
00:50:17Let me ask you,
00:50:18would you,
00:50:19I know you're happy with the way things are going in your life.
00:50:21If after hearing you on the equalizer,
00:50:24if somebody called,
00:50:25would you consider being a manager again?
00:50:27I would always consider it.
00:50:29And I would look at the dynamics of it because I still love the game and I
00:50:33still love the strategy.
00:50:34And I still prepare as a broadcaster,
00:50:37like I'm managing the game because it's,
00:50:39it's really the only thing that I know,
00:50:41John.
00:50:41And I would definitely consider it.
00:50:44But again,
00:50:45I'm where I'm supposed to be right now.
00:50:48I'm,
00:50:48I'm happy with my life and I'm getting ready to go watch my daughter play
00:50:52basketball in college on,
00:50:53on Saturday.
00:50:54So life is good.
00:50:56Where does she play?
00:50:58I think she's a division one player,
00:50:59but I'm glad.
00:51:00She's a Utah Ute.
00:51:01She's a Utah Ute.
00:51:03Wow.
00:51:03And they have an exhibition game Sunday and then they open up for real
00:51:08November 3rd.
00:51:09And we love going to see her play.
00:51:10That's terrific.
00:51:11And I'm glad you cleared that up about the suites.
00:51:13You know,
00:51:13that's it's been out there forever.
00:51:15I know.
00:51:16I know.
00:51:16It doesn't matter.
00:51:17John,
00:51:18you know,
00:51:19this world doesn't matter that he cleaned it up.
00:51:20The next time somebody needs to use it,
00:51:22they'll just go right back to it because it's a good soundbite.
00:51:25I'm sorry,
00:51:26Joe,
00:51:27that I wish the world was different.
00:51:28It's not.
00:51:30I'm wondering if I could end on this because I do think of you as one of
00:51:34the most awful people I've dealt with in baseball.
00:51:38And I don't mean,
00:51:39I'm only bringing up the CBA is coming up,
00:51:41but you don't have to talk about anything in the CBA.
00:51:43If I let you go and you could fix anything about the game,
00:51:47change anything about the game,
00:51:49what would you change?
00:51:51That's a great question.
00:51:52I would not have the three batter minimum for one.
00:51:56And it would be still allow like a lefty to come in to face a lefty and be
00:51:59done with it.
00:52:00Yes.
00:52:01Yes.
00:52:02Because I think you take a talent away from somebody is what you do.
00:52:06But the most important thing I would do,
00:52:08I would change the playoffs.
00:52:10You would no longer have all these off days during the playoffs because it's
00:52:15the only sport where you can manage completely different than you did during
00:52:20the course of the season.
00:52:21And I don't like that.
00:52:22I don't think like the Yankees played Saturday.
00:52:26They were off Sunday.
00:52:27They played Monday.
00:52:27They were off Tuesday.
00:52:28I think you should have to use at least four starters,
00:52:32at least four and probably five in a playoff series.
00:52:36And it really bothers me because you don't see the true value of the team.
00:52:43And I,
00:52:44I'm not for you.
00:52:46You know,
00:52:46what's interesting to two things.
00:52:48Number one,
00:52:49one of the other people I think of as the most thoughtful person I've ever
00:52:52covered is Buck Showalter.
00:52:54And he always said it,
00:52:55which is,
00:52:55I don't,
00:52:56we play one way all year.
00:52:58And then I find out who has the best 12 to 15 players,
00:53:01as opposed to who has the best 25 players.
00:53:03Correct.
00:53:04And he used to say that all the time.
00:53:05The other thing is your 2019 one,
00:53:07because of a lot of off days,
00:53:09right?
00:53:09You only had a used restarting pitchers and you,
00:53:11well,
00:53:12I brought them back on short rest.
00:53:13I brought them back.
00:53:14You didn't really have a fourth guy you trusted,
00:53:16right?
00:53:16No.
00:53:17And,
00:53:18and,
00:53:18you know,
00:53:19I was questioned for it,
00:53:20but it,
00:53:21I mean,
00:53:21CC,
00:53:22if we played the seventh game was going to pitch his third game in the
00:53:24world series.
00:53:25Yeah.
00:53:25And again,
00:53:27I think you want to see the true value of the whole team that
00:53:31contributed all year.
00:53:33When you played 14 days in a row or 17 days in a row,
00:53:36and we've gotten completely away from that.
00:53:38And I hate it.
00:53:39I just,
00:53:40I don't like it.
00:53:41I'm with you.
00:53:42I wish we play.
00:53:43I wish that the games were every day and we,
00:53:46they,
00:53:47they replicated a season.
00:53:48And I,
00:53:49and I found out that the best of a hundred.
00:53:51Now it's funny.
00:53:52We might end up with Milwaukee and Tampa Bay,
00:53:54who were the two best teams in the league.
00:53:56So maybe this system will whatever,
00:53:58but I'm with you.
00:53:59I like seeing the,
00:54:01and by the way,
00:54:01I think Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are using the length of their rosters in
00:54:04short series.
00:54:06Yes.
00:54:06And here's,
00:54:07here's the last thing about that,
00:54:08right?
00:54:09We talk about,
00:54:11we want to see more offense in the game by shortening up the rosters and
00:54:17being able to use your bullpen so much,
00:54:19we don't see offense.
00:54:21We just don't.
00:54:22But if you had to use everyone,
00:54:24you had to use a five man rotation and all eight guys in your bullpen,
00:54:29you're going to see more offense and games.
00:54:31You're going to have different types of games than what we're seeing now.
00:54:33Yeah.
00:54:34You won't see Aaron Ashby every day.
00:54:35Oh gosh.
00:54:37I don't know how he ever gets hit,
00:54:38but that's stuff he's got.
00:54:40Yeah.
00:54:42Joe,
00:54:42we reached out because we knew it was a good time to bring on someone who
00:54:46kind of knows the environment and is as thoughtful as you are.
00:54:49And I hope everyone recognizes who listens to us or watches us that you
00:54:54didn't disappoint.
00:54:55Joe,
00:54:56thank you so much for joining us on the show.
00:54:58Thanks,
00:54:59Joe.
00:54:59I look forward to seeing you guys more.
00:55:00Thanks,
00:55:01John.
00:55:01And Joe,
00:55:02you got to think about moving to Florida.
00:55:04It's nice and warm here,
00:55:04Joe.
00:55:05Oh man,
00:55:06you don't want me.
00:55:07Nobody who lives in Florida wants me in Florida.
00:55:10I trust you.
00:55:11Joe's not moving to Florida.
00:55:12No,
00:55:13this island I'm on now,
00:55:15it's going to get my body.
00:55:16Eventually,
00:55:17this is where it's all going to happen.
00:55:19So,
00:55:19yeah.
00:55:19Well,
00:55:20you guys have a great week and I hope we have exciting baseball for the
00:55:22next three weeks or whatever it is.
00:55:25Thanks,
00:55:25Joe.
00:55:26Thank you,
00:55:26Joe.
00:55:27Appreciate it.
00:55:33John and I,
00:55:34of course,
00:55:34thank Joe Girardi for joining us on the show.
00:55:36John hit or error.
00:55:38Well,
00:55:38I'm going to give a hit to the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:55:41My in-laws are very excited about the Brewers and they should be.
00:55:45It's pretty incredible.
00:55:46They're in position now.
00:55:48They got to still,
00:55:49they got to knock off the Dodgers.
00:55:50Easier said than done,
00:55:51but the Dodgers are down to nothing.
00:55:54As we do this,
00:55:55the Brewers do everything right.
00:55:57You know,
00:55:58obviously they're a small market team,
00:55:59but I give them credit.
00:56:00They're not last in spending.
00:56:02They're not second to last.
00:56:04They're not even in the bottom 10.
00:56:05They're 19th in spending.
00:56:07So they are trying,
00:56:08but they've obviously spent well.
00:56:10They've done a terrific job.
00:56:11I'm not saying this to knock David Stearns.
00:56:14He did start there and started doing well there,
00:56:17but they've continued on without him.
00:56:19And their moves have all been really good.
00:56:22Their bullpen is fantastic.
00:56:24Obviously they got the Miz,
00:56:26which is a nice help,
00:56:27but I mean,
00:56:28the way they play the game,
00:56:29they put the bull in play.
00:56:30They really outplayed the Dodgers through two games.
00:56:33The invincibility of the Dodgers,
00:56:36which I saw last year when I covered that,
00:56:38LCS is gone.
00:56:40The intimidation factor is gone.
00:56:42And the Brewers think they can do it.
00:56:44So I'm giving them credit and they get a hit.
00:56:47Yeah.
00:56:47You know,
00:56:48John I'm going to give an error to narratives and I'll just piggyback on
00:56:52this thing.
00:56:53Look,
00:56:54I do think the Brewers in general play a game of,
00:56:59you know,
00:57:00technically well,
00:57:01but the reality is they struck out like the Yankees on steroids in game
00:57:05two.
00:57:07They've had a runner picked off.
00:57:09They did botch a sacrifice.
00:57:11They errored their way through the game.
00:57:13I found it interesting.
00:57:15They won a two one game in the first game.
00:57:17And everyone talked about the bunt that put a runner on second and moved
00:57:21them over and everything.
00:57:22I'm like,
00:57:23Bryce Terang hit a left on left homer off of Tarek Skubel that few people
00:57:27in the world could do to take an inside pitch like that and,
00:57:31and muscle it to the,
00:57:32to the middle of the field.
00:57:33They got a big homer from Wilson Contreras,
00:57:36the guardians who hit among the fewest homers in baseball.
00:57:38They had a couple of homers to get back into the game one against the
00:57:41rays.
00:57:42The rays have stopped hitting by the way,
00:57:44the rays didn't hit against the Yankees either.
00:57:46They hit a couple of more homers than the Yankees and they won a series.
00:57:49I get it.
00:57:50Everyone wants the narratives.
00:57:51Oh,
00:57:51they're the little engines that could,
00:57:52and they all hit the ball and whatever the Dodgers had like 10 singles
00:57:57and five walks in game one and scored one run.
00:58:00They're bemoaning the fact they can't put the ball over the fence.
00:58:03Cause so Tani isn't hitting.
00:58:04Will Smith isn't hitting,
00:58:05et cetera.
00:58:06I just think that we,
00:58:08I'm not forgiving the Yankees.
00:58:10The Yankees have gotten knocked out a bunch of years in a row.
00:58:13And I,
00:58:14I don't know if I could say anything worse about a team than they're soft
00:58:17minded and soft and not tough enough.
00:58:19I'm going to stick with that.
00:58:20But like,
00:58:21we do come up.
00:58:22I talked to a scout this morning and he was like,
00:58:24Oh,
00:58:25he was doing the whole thing.
00:58:26You know,
00:58:26they put the ball in play.
00:58:27I'm like,
00:58:28they had a homer.
00:58:29They had a homer.
00:58:30The Bruins have not played technically well.
00:58:32Go ask Pat Murphy.
00:58:33If he thinks his team has played technically well for two games,
00:58:36I bet you he wouldn't say that.
00:58:37Like the,
00:58:39we're going to have the narrative.
00:58:40I think we should deal with,
00:58:42we shouldn't be the Yankees.
00:58:43Let's deal with reality a little bit also.
00:58:45Yeah,
00:58:46that's a fair point.
00:58:46They've made errors.
00:58:47They've made,
00:58:48they definitely have made mistakes.
00:58:50But,
00:58:51Hey,
00:58:52they struck out a ton yesterday.
00:58:54Right.
00:58:54But I just say they have a very good team on a low payroll.
00:59:00So the front office is doing a great job.
00:59:03They do.
00:59:03They do make some mistakes.
00:59:05Why can't the Mets get an executive front like,
00:59:07like that from a team like that?
00:59:09Why can't they?
00:59:10Oh,
00:59:10wait,
00:59:10I know.
00:59:11I know.
00:59:12We thought he was the savior.
00:59:13We'll see.
00:59:14I mean,
00:59:14it's,
00:59:14you know,
00:59:14obviously it's been two rough years after a good one,
00:59:17but yeah,
00:59:18I,
00:59:19I think since you brought it up,
00:59:22I think he needs to adjust to the big market.
00:59:24We had too many small market deals.
00:59:27You know,
00:59:27two years.
00:59:28There's no such thing as a bad two year deal.
00:59:30Oh,
00:59:30really?
00:59:31I think they've got about five of them,
00:59:33right?
00:59:33And two and three year deals that are bad.
00:59:36And once in a while,
00:59:38you got to suck it up and pay the money for the star,
00:59:40which we call it.
00:59:42Obviously did that one with Soto for the most part.
00:59:46Yeah.
00:59:46He's got to,
00:59:47I think he's just got to adjust to being a big market GM.
00:59:51And there are some negatives to it as well.
00:59:53You know,
00:59:53it's not all easier just because you got more money to spend.
00:59:57So that's,
00:59:58that's what I think on that.
00:59:59But I mean,
01:00:01the Brewers,
01:00:01I mean,
01:00:02you got to get credit,
01:00:03right?
01:00:03I mean,
01:00:04look what they've done.
01:00:06Yeah.
01:00:07No,
01:00:07no,
01:00:07no,
01:00:07no.
01:00:08Yeah.
01:00:11We will obviously be continuing on talking about the playoffs a lot more as
01:00:15we go along.
01:00:16We still felt the Yankees were the big deal here.
01:00:18Our big deal always is Tommy Hogan,
