00:48him hitting the boy's head, making him do squats, forcing him to stand for long periods and caning him.
00:54The court said the footage showed Chan's actions went far beyond ordinary punishment and amounted
01:00to excessive, merciless abuse of a helpless three-year-old who could not defend himself.
01:06It added that Chan had betrayed the trust of the boy's father who had left the child in his care
01:11and rejected the defence's claim that he was disciplining the boy the way he did his own child.
01:17After weighing the aggravating and mitigating factors, it ruled that the jail term was appropriate
01:22for the offence, stressing the importance of protecting children from abuse.
