00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio and our great staple of the British summer, particularly for those in
00:37the farming community.
00:38But actually much broader than that, anybody who loves the great British countryside swings into action.
00:42It's the county show, of course, and today will be no exception in Harrogate as the great Yorkshire show swings
00:48into action.
00:49In its 158th a year and some 130,000 visitors are expected there, but they won't just be there for
00:58agricultural purposes, of course, as I say.
01:01So I used to go as a kid always to the Bath and West because that was sort of, you
01:05know, my part of the country as it were.
01:06But what about you? Are you a country girl at heart?
01:09I'm not a country girl in any sense, actually. No, I take the food side of it.
01:14They have a lot of food and home-cooked wares, don't they?
01:17Oh, there's a lot of that going on.
01:19Chutney, jam.
01:21Chutney, jam, marmalade, all sorts, but really...
01:24You know, with your flat cap and your...
01:25Yep.
01:26Yep, promise jacket.
01:27Absolutely. No, we, in my apprentice days, we filmed a couple of them.
01:31Anyway, there we are.
01:33Now, who's here? Rachel's back. Do you remember Rachel?
01:36How well she did in her opening round.
01:38I've spoken to her just a couple of seconds ago and I said that we expect another night.
01:43Right, OK.
01:44And she fluttered her eyebrows, her eyelashes at me.
01:46OK. Welcome back.
01:48Rachel, reigning champion from Harpenden in Hertfordshire, loves wildlife photography and is a qualified ski instructor.
01:56Yes.
01:56You've got to be good for that.
01:58I guess so, reasonably.
02:00And where did you instruct?
02:01In Canada, in Mont-Tremblant.
02:03OK. I've never skied in Canada. It's cold up there, isn't it?
02:07It is cold, especially January, February, it can be really cold.
02:10You're joined by Stephen Fuller, a freelance author, writer and editor from Basingstoke, who plays football and golf and does
02:17high board diving.
02:18Now, that's got to be pretty frightening.
02:20Not so much anymore.
02:22I used to love it, yeah.
02:24And a bit of cliff diving, too.
02:25Oh, good.
02:26Yeah, I used to love it.
02:27How high is a high board?
02:29Ten metres, usually.
02:31There's a five metre board, three metres spring board.
02:36What's your highest dive been?
02:37Oh, 55 feet, maybe.
02:40Oh, really?
02:41Hmm.
02:41You've got to hit the water right, haven't you?
02:43Yes.
02:44Yeah.
02:45You have.
02:45You don't want to hit it on your tummy or your back.
02:48No, quite right.
02:49Yeah.
02:49Big round of applause, then, for Brave Stephen and Rachel Sheridan.
02:54Now, that's got to be a very frightening thing.
02:56And over in the corner, of course, Susie.
02:57And for the last time, Susie Dent, but for the last time, the wonderful Alison Stedman is with us.
03:04And it's been an absolute pleasure for the last five days, five countdown days, to have you here.
03:10It's been fun.
03:11Now, as I say, Rachel, a nine would be appreciated.
03:16I'll see what I can do.

12:09No. No jimbos.
12:12There's imbos.
12:14Stupid or gullible people in Australian English.
12:17But no jimbos.

12:21Bad luck. Alison?
12:23Ames.
12:24You only got a four.

12:28Yeah, it was really tough, actually.
12:32Unwittingly, Stephen, you've given us a five at least with imbos.
12:35But really difficult, so I couldn't get beyond that.
12:38That's it. It'll do.
12:39That's the way it is.
12:41The way the cards fall.

13:52There we go.
13:54Let's get rid of that.
13:57Thank you very much.
13:5821 plays 23, and Rachel's still there, all right.
14:01And it's now time to turn to Alison.
14:05Alison, you're a keen bird watcher.
14:08Yeah, well, I always put out feeders for the birds.
14:13And if I go on a walk, I often take a handful of bird seed, put it in my pocket,
14:17and then I sprinkle it around.
14:19And very often, you know, you get birds.
14:21And I was in New York.
14:22I was very excited about going to Central Park because friends are, oh, you'll see red cardinal birds.
14:30And the American robin, this, that, and the other.
14:33And I thought, oh, all these birds I've never seen or never even heard of, in fact.
14:37So I'm in Manhattan, and I was walking around, and I thought, if only I could get some bird seed.
14:43Right in the heart of Manhattan, I saw this shop.
14:45And it sort of had, you know, little dogs in the window and little bones, you know, and things.
14:51And so I went in.
14:53I looked all around the shop, couldn't see anything at all.
14:56It was all kind of dogs' coats and hats and dogs' beds and dogs' this, you know.
15:01Anyway, as I was walking out, I thought, well, I'll just check with a very scary lady behind the counter.
15:09Who was like this, you know.
15:12And I said, excuse me, but do you sell wild bird seed, you know, seed for wild birds?
15:18And she went, no, we don't.
15:21And stared at me like that.
15:24And as I went to walk out, over her shoulder, I saw a photograph of a pug dog.
15:30And underneath, there was at least, I would say, 20 bottles of nail varnish for dogs.
15:38Every colour you could think of.
15:41And I couldn't resist.
15:42I said to her, so you don't sell bird seed, but you do sell nail varnish for dogs.
15:50And there was a beat, and she just looked at me and went, that's the way it is.
15:56I can just see her now.
15:58Really lovely.
16:0431 plays 23.
16:05Rachel in the lead, and it's Rachel's letters game.

23:41Alison?
23:44Erm, chintz.
23:45Chintz.
23:47Where does it come from now?
23:49It comes from a Hindi word, because it was painted calico cloth.
23:53OK.
23:53But the Hindi word actually meant stained,

25:30Hungary, thank you.
25:31All right.
25:32Yeah.
25:33Now, Alison's very busy there.
25:35Rain out.
25:37Rain out.
25:38Mm.
25:38That means it's a washout.
25:40It's a washout.
25:42Yeah.
25:42Event that's cancelled through rain.
25:43OK.
25:44And there is one more seven, which is tartufo, if you've ever seen that on the pudding menu.
25:50T-A-R-T-U-F-O.
25:52It's an Italian dessert.
25:53Lots of chocolate and a whipped mousse-like pudding.
25:57Oh, good.
25:58Very good.
25:58Sounds good.
25:59Sixty plays.
26:00Forty-five.
26:01And Susie, we're back with you for your origins of words.
26:07Can't wait.
26:08Well, I think we're going to talk about the origins of some symbols today, and specifically
26:12currency symbols.
26:14So I'm going to start with the dollar sign.
26:16Lots of theories about this.
26:17It's one of the most common ones, being that it comes from the figure eight, which you can
26:21just about see when you look at the dollar sign.
26:23And so it's thought to come from the Spanish pieces of eight.
26:27But, in fact, it comes from a handwritten P with a superscript S, so a little S at the
26:32top.
26:33And it was an abbreviation for peso in Spanish-American books.
26:37And what happened was the pound symbol first was popularized, if you like, in manuscripts
26:43of English-Americans who were having business dealings, commercial transactions with Spanish-Americans.
26:49Hence, the word shifted over into American-English, and it started to really take over in the 1800s.
26:57The dollar itself, by the way, goes back to Joachim's Tala.
27:02And that was the name of a coin from the silver mines of Joachim's Tala.
27:06That was in Bohemia, now in the Czech Republic.
27:09But, again, because of business transactions, et cetera, it went over into the British North
27:13American colonies, particularly during the War of Independence.
27:16And the rest is history, as they say.
27:19The app sign that we use in email addresses, Twitter handles, et cetera, that was used a lot
27:24in currency as well.
27:25And that goes all the way back to Latin scribes, who would write very quickly if they wanted
27:31to write at, they would write an A with a sort of scribbly T, and that was their sort of
27:37abbreviation, and it survived.
27:39Pound sign, I mentioned that at the beginning.
27:41That's simply a capital letter, L, with two crossbars to show that it was an abbreviation,
27:47which was the convention of the time.
27:48And the L stands for Libra in Latin.
27:52That was the name of a Roman unit of weight, hence the scales and the star sign.
27:56And it also gave rise, of course, to our abbreviation, LB.
28:00That was short for Libra, meaning that particular pound of weight.
28:05Fantastic.
28:06Thank you, Susie.
28:09Very good.
28:11Wonderful.
28:1260 plays 45, and it's Stephen's letters game.
28:16Now, Stephen.
28:16Thank you, Nick.
28:18I'll start with a consonant, please, Rachel.
28:20Thank you, Stephen.

28:46And a consonant.

29:33And Rachel.
29:34Massing.
29:35Where else can we go from there, I wonder?
29:37Alison.
29:40Enigmas.
29:41Yeah, very good.
29:43And gaminess.
29:45Yes.
29:45How would you express that now, Susie?
29:47Gaminess.
29:48Well, I think we were mentioning the other day, when we had gamiest, I think, that gaminess often
29:52applied to wine or indeed meat.
29:55I've never heard a sort of meat being sort of linked into, to wine.
30:00Yeah, I think it's very, very sort of full-bodied, full-mouthed wine.
30:03Full-bodied, I should say so.
30:0667 to 52.
30:07And it's Rachel's letters game.
30:10Final one of the day.
30:13Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
30:14Thank you, Rachel.

31:28Movist?
31:29Hmm.
31:30Oh.
31:31No, I think I'll be fine.
31:32We can always add, um, EST to any single-syllabled adjectives, and that is one of them, so I think
31:39that's absolutely fine.
31:40All right.
31:41And in the, um, corner, Alison?
31:44Um, matures.
31:46Matures.
31:47Matures.
31:47Mm-hmm.

31:49That was about it for seven.
31:51All right.
31:51As much as we could do.
31:52All right.
31:52All right.
31:52Very good.
31:53So, it's the final numbers game, and it's yours.
31:56Good luck.

31:58Thank you, Stephen.
31:59One large one.
32:00Five little ones.
32:01And for the final time today, your numbers are six, five, nine, seven, three, and 75.
32:11And the target, 445.

32:59That's it.
33:00So here we are then, it's crucial countdown.
33:02Conundrum time.
33:03Fingers on buzzers.
33:04Let's roll that conundrum.
33:11Stephen, peevishly.
33:14Let's see whether you're right.
33:17Peevishly.
33:18Oh, look at that.
33:27Never give up.
33:29Congratulations on bad luck to Rachel.
33:32You did so well.
33:33But listen, you're not going home empty-handed.
33:36You're dragging a huge teapot back to Harpenden with our best wishes.
33:40You're upset.
33:41Are you disappointed?
33:42No, I've had fun.
33:42You're a good player.
33:43You're a good player.
33:44And Stephen, my word, never give up.
33:47We shall see you tomorrow.
33:50Well done.
33:51Well done.

34:01It's been a great pleasure.
