The fifth-generation Volkswagen Caddy gets a real-world test drive here, with a close look at how the new people carrier compares to the old van-based formula. Built in Poland and now riding on the MQB platform, the Caddy is slightly wider, has a longer wheelbase, and offers more room inside without growing in overall length. This review covers the passenger version in 5-seat form, plus the practical details that matter most: sliding doors, a lift-up tailgate, cargo space, payload, and everyday usability.

There’s also a deep dive into the front cabin, where Volkswagen’s new infotainment setup takes centre stage for better and worse. The video looks at storage, seating flexibility, rear access, comfort, safety tech, and the updated suspension layout with coils at the rear instead of leaf springs. On the road, the 122 hp 2.0 TDI with DSG is assessed for refinement, ride quality, noise levels, and acceleration, alongside the claimed fuel economy and towing capacity.

Created for viewers searching for Volkswagen Caddy 5 review, VW Caddy test drive, people carrier review, compact MPV comparison, family van practicality, cargo space, diesel DSG review, and MQB platform discussion. It also suits anyone researching Caddy 2021 dimensions, boot space, rear seat flexibility, and everyday van-based family car usability.

00:00this is the fifth generation volkswagen caddy and this is two-thirds of the rear bench
00:05which later i will have to reinstall inside will i succeed place your bets in the comment section
00:29volkswagen caddy is a light commercial vehicle in production since the late 1970s depending on the
00:35generation it is based on one of the several vw group models like the previous generation also
00:40this new volkswagen caddy is made in poland it is supposed to be larger more modern and more frugal
00:46than its predecessor let's find out the new caddy is now made on the mqb platform like most current
00:54vw range starting with the polo supermini and going up to the tiguan crossover and their counterparts
01:00in audi seat and skoda brands the fifth generation caddy is the same length like the fourth gen model
01:07but it is slightly wider and the wheelbase is seven centimeters longer thanks to the longer wheelbase
01:13the rear door is now wider and there is more space inside the new caddy is still available in the
01:21utility cargo spec as well as this more family oriented version both come in standard 272.5
01:29centimeter wheelbase or in the maxi 297 centimeters extended wheelbase variant the passenger version
01:37regardless of the wheelbase can be ordered in five or seven seater configuration this is a five seater
01:43with standard wheelbase this lift up tailgate can be replaced with asymmetrically split doors it's worth
01:51considering if you need to park close to an obstacle and access the cargo area from the back
01:57on the other hand if you like road trips and maybe spending some time admiring the scenery nature well
02:05then you might want to have a tailgate like this because it'll give you some cover from the rain or
02:10sun
02:12the people carrier version now gets three shopping bag hooks there's also a 12 volt socket left side pocket
02:19is gone and the one on the right has a detachable guard which seems to be attached rather poorly
02:27i could do a separate video just talking about the cargo area and the caddy but in brief
02:32there are two models the cargo and the passenger model and in the cargo the cargo area height is 127
02:38centimeters and in the passenger model is 120 more or less the width in the cargo between the walls is
02:45161 centimeters and 123 between the wheel arches and in the passenger model is about 118 centimeters by
02:51the floor now the length in the cargo version is 180 centimeters or 215 centimeters to the divider and
02:58in the passenger model it's theoretically 191 centimeters but that's assuming the front passenger seat
03:05is slid pushed all the way forwards in real life the cargo area length in the passenger caddy with the
03:13standard wheelbase is around 100 centimeters with the second row in place 130 centimeters with the
03:19second row folded 165 centimeters with the second row removed and with the front seat set to my driving
03:27position and 260 centimeters to the dashboard with the front passenger seat folded but in the end it's better
03:35you arrange a test drive and check for yourself what items you need to carry actually fit inside depending
03:41on the version and homologation the caddy can carry a payload of between 590 and 765 kilograms
03:50and now i'll try putting the seat back in wish me luck
03:59the seats are heavy an adult man should be able to take them out and reinstall them but i suggest
04:05you
04:05have at least someone spotting you to get the seat in place correctly before it breaks your back
04:15getting in the back is easier than the previous generation there's still a high sill but at least the
04:20door opening is now much wider there is also more leg room headroom was never an issue but in the
04:27middle the tunnel remained as the caddy 5 will also be offered with all-wheel drive unfortunately there
04:34are no cup holders beside those in the tray tables at least now the tray tables can be locked in
04:40position
04:40so you can place something heavier on them like laptop there are two usb-c ports and air vents you
04:46can also
04:46order a 230 volt socket the door pockets are decent size but be careful not to overfill them
04:54as larger items will then scrape on the bodywork when you slide door open on the plus side the sliding
05:01doors as well as the tailgate have the optional electric soft close mechanism so you don't have to slam them
05:08shut in the front the big news is the new inovision cockpit we'll talk about it in a moment but
05:14let's start
05:15with the positives the door pockets are big also big are the cup holders there's a good amount of
05:22space for your bits and bobs a phone cubby with usb ports and a 12 volt socket storage under the
05:28armrest
05:28and the glove box are average size there's also a drawer under the passenger seat gone is the shelf above
05:35the windscreen it was hard to access anyway also gone is storage in the center of the top of the
05:41dash
05:41instead there is a shelf in front of the driver perfect for documents or sunglasses unfortunately
05:47this shelf as well as other cabbies are finished in hard plastic so any hard items left inside will
05:54rattle and now for the infovision cockpit which i think is the worst thing that came out of vw since
06:01dieselgate this is yet another model by volkswagen in which i dread touching the infotainment system i get
06:08the impression the system was designed against the user everything is unnecessarily complicated you have
06:14to click too many times to get anywhere everything requires too much searching i understand that
06:21digitalization forces car makers to introduce new interfaces and you can have your favorite settings
06:27downloaded in every volkswagen you log into but i can't imagine how bad the other proposals must have been
06:35that they decided to run with this one
06:52i don't want to say the innovation cockpit is all bad it's mostly bad but at least now the central
06:58display
06:58is on top of the dashboard and tilted towards the driver in the caddy 4 sat nav was an afterthought
07:05added at the bottom of the center stack under the ac knobs
07:17ah the knobs we should cherish our knobs before they wither away
07:27along with the mqb platform and the innovation cockpit the caddy now gets new or improved safety
07:33systems and driver aids in the previous gen i complained that there was no lane keeping assist
07:38and now there is there is also improved adaptive cruise control driver fatigue monitoring system blind
07:46spot monitoring front collision warning system and the system reminding me to keep in the middle of the lane
07:52and keep my hands on the steering wheel it's based on capacitative sensors
07:59so the system should recognize that my hands are on the steering wheel even though the steering wheel is
08:04not moving unfortunately for some reason the system likes to warn me and i have to do some sudden moves
08:11to get it to shut the you know what up probably it's a temporary error which they will fix in
08:18a software update
08:19but for the time being it drives me nuts
08:26another fault i found is the passenger side mirror it goes diagonally up left and down right
08:33i tried forcing it manually hoping something will click but it didn't click i had a similar issue in
08:39the id4 but with the driver side mirror however over there it fixed itself with the restart of the car
08:45and i didn't get a chance to film it if you don't want all the innovation cockpit goodness some low
08:51spec
08:52versions come with analog instrument cluster and a smaller central display but then you can't have some
08:58of the options which may attracted you to the caddy in the first place
09:06enough whinging let's talk ride and handling apparently the steering is now a bit more direct
09:11close to the center so this along with the tweaks to the front suspension should make the caddy more
09:16involving to drive first of all this is a delivery van made into a family car so involvement is not
09:23my top
09:23priority and secondly no it's not really involving if not for the innovation cockpit which gives me high
09:29blood pressure i'd probably fall asleep behind the wheel of the caddy so maybe there is method in this madness
09:40big changes were made to the rear suspension leaf springs were replaced with coils and the solid rear
09:46axle is on trailing arms with panhard rod it's compact leaving space for the future four motion
09:52all-wheel drive or cng tank there's also going to be a ph ev the new rear suspension helps maintain
10:00comfort and agility regardless of the load and because the rear suspension is compact the cargo
10:05area is wider as i mentioned earlier unfortunately i didn't have anything sufficiently heavy to transport
10:14to give the new rear suspension a proper beating when driving the car almost empty i feel the suspension is
10:19on the stiff side so i suspect with heavy load it's going to be just right the new caddy is
10:27decently
10:28soundproofed neither the engine sound nor the wind noise are particularly obtrusive i can talk with the
10:33passenger without raising my voice i noticed however a slight echo when i turned towards my passenger
10:39perhaps it's my voice bouncing of the optional panoramic roof
10:51the caddy is currently available with petrol 1.5 tsi or diesel 2.0 tdi engines with power ranging from
10:5875
10:58to 122 horsepower there is a choice of six-speed manual transmissions or seven-speed dsg this is a
11:06122 122 horsepower diesel with dsg which should use around 5 liters per 100 kilometers combined
11:12and that's well within reach this caddy can tow up to 1.5 tons the top speed is 186 kilometers
11:19this i will not test but i will see how quick it is vw doesn't provide any official 0 to
11:25100
11:25kilometers per hour figure because who cares but i'm going to check it anyway
11:31and i got around 11 and a half seconds without any load prices of the mark 5 vw caddy start
11:40at 21 400
11:41euro for the cargo model with a 75 horsepower diesel and a manual transmission that's with vat the passenger
11:51combi model starts at 23 657 euro for the 75 horsepower diesel this is a move trim 122 horsepower diesel
12:01with
12:01dsg for around 40 000 euro thanks to migrating to the mqb platform the fifth generation volkswagen caddy
12:09offers more passenger space and more cargo room i'm not a fan of the new vw digital interface but maybe
12:16i'll
12:16get used to it someday and maybe new buyers like it after all it's customers voting with their wallets
12:21that decide whether something is developed or scrapped and how do you like the new volkswagen caddy
12:27and the info vision infotainment thingy let me know in the comment section below if you like my sarcastic
