00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the biggest takeaways and
00:04hidden gems from the first two episodes of Vision Quest. We'll be talking spoilers for
00:09Episodes 1 and 2, as well as spoilers for various other MCU projects, so consider this your warning.
00:16How is that possible?
00:21Muzzletop, it's a boy.
00:26Number 10. The Weight of a Mountain
00:28Episode 1, titled No Strings, shows us what Vision's been up to since WandaVision.
00:33He works in an Edinburgh pub and chats with the owner, Miss Guthrie.
00:37Eventually, they talk about Vision's past, and as you can expect, Wanda Maximoff is brought up.
00:43Vision doesn't delve into too much detail about her, but he gives an excellent line about her being crushed.
00:48You're right, Ed.
00:50I have a hand up.
00:53Well, it's complicated, I guess. She was sort of...
00:58Crushed under the weight of a mountain.
01:00You could interpret this figuratively, but past MCU installments have shown that this was a very literal experience.
01:07Don't forget that Multiverse of Madness ended with Wanda being crushed under Mount Wondagore.
01:22Whether she lived or died is still a topic of discussion, but what we know for sure is that a
01:27mountain crashing down on you is going to hurt.
01:29Aye. Emotions can feel like that sometimes.
01:34Number 9. The Midnight Matinee
01:36Sometimes, a stroll down memory lane can feel like going to the movies, and that's what Vision does.
01:42He relives several incredibly cinematic memories, but he isn't just re-watching the highlights because they're cool,
01:49he's also trying to get a sense of who he is.
01:51Or perhaps who the original version of him was.
01:54Other Marvel shows have tried this setting, too.
01:57In Loki, the newly incarcerated god saw his life story unfold in a similar way.
02:02Your games don't frighten me.
02:03Making them feel little.
02:05I know what I am.
02:06A murderer?
02:07A liberator.
02:09Eyeballs, maybe.
02:12Look at that smile.
02:14You are enjoying that.
02:16Meanwhile, outside the MCU, Ben Reilly from Spider Noir watched classic noirs in order to rediscover his humanity.
02:23Believe it or not, I went to the movies, I watched the actors, I studied the way they spoke, the
02:30way they moved.
02:34The arachnid genes are still in me.
02:38Vision, Loki, and Spider-Man Noir don't quite have the same arcs.
02:42However, like Ben and Loki, Vision's Midnight Matinee is how he reconciles his past while figuring out his future.
02:50I'm afraid our vision has only ever felt untethered.
02:55And humanity is an anchor he can't seem to grasp.
03:02With all these nods, it sure seems like Marvel loves movies.
03:05And hey, so do we.
03:07We talk all about superhero movies and other types of films over on WatchMojo's 24-7 livestream.
03:13In fact, it's kind of our thing.
03:14Scan the QR code on screen to join us for non-stop movie-discussing madness.
03:19I know you better get out of my face!
03:22Out of my face!
03:23Out of my face!
03:25This is all me up in here, you handle that!
03:27Number 8.
03:28Let's get psychological
03:30Around the same time as Vision's Memory Lane binge,
03:33we see the AI Friday reading a book discussing the id, the ego, and the superego.
03:38In psychology, these are three specific parts of the mind.
03:42Yes, that wasn't exactly our vision.
03:45But he believes it was a version of himself that was the most human.
03:50Simply put, the id represents our impulsive desires,
03:54while the superego represents our critical nature,
03:57the part of us that leans towards reason, facts, and logic.
04:00Ego is the middleman, balancing out the two extremes.
04:04If we take this further,
04:06it's possible that some of the AIs in Vision's head represent these ideas.
04:14Maybe I wanted to crash through the skylight, huh?
04:18For example, the id gives off major Edith vibes,
04:22while Jarvis screams superego.
04:24No offense.
04:25And Friday can easily fill that role of the mediator.
04:29Maybe these are shots in the dark, but hey, maybe we're onto something.
04:32She called you odd.
04:34That's progress.
04:35Means you finally have a personality.
04:38Friday, can I ask, did this level of honesty come pre-programmed?
04:41Stop over-processing things.
04:43Try and have some fun.
04:44Number 7.
04:45The TVs and the Painting
04:47Ultron's room is a mess in the best way possible.
04:51His mental prison is a chaotic clutter of trinkets, art, and tech.
04:55The numerous CRT TVs in particular tell an interesting story.
04:58They're set to different broadcasts, showcasing a wild range of sights.
05:03Footage from a battlefield, cooking shows, cartoons.
05:07These aren't just screens,
05:08but windows that Ultron's peering into to steal more glimpses of humanity.
05:12I cannot believe that you actually programmed these idiot data bits
05:17to deliver fake food to your fractured psyche,
05:21ice cold and 40 minutes too late.
05:24How dare you.
05:25Let's not forget the art, though, either.
05:27The painting that Vision looks at is called The Garden of Earthly Delights.
05:31It's a stunning display of art, but also an illustration of light and darkness.
05:35And Ultron says as much, too.
05:37You don't see the pain and confusion, or the anger, or grief?
05:44Besides that, it basically shows a journey taking place,
05:47much like how Vision will be taking a journey, too.
05:50But at the same time, they wallow in their hardship and misery, guilt.
05:57They're grotesque.
06:01And yet lovely.
06:06Your newfound enlightenment is...
06:11It's confounding to me.
06:13Number 6. Tommy's Sleight of Hand
06:16First impressions are everything,
06:18and right away, Tommy Shepard makes it clear that he is cool.
06:22We see him con a guy out of some money,
06:24but the fun doesn't stop there.
06:26It's not my watch, I can't...
06:29I mean, there's got to be a lost and found somewhere.
06:31What if I kick in 250?
06:34A little bit later, he has an interesting debrief with his friend named Lisa.
06:39The two banter for a bit, and as part of the banter,
06:42Tommy playfully shuffles cash out from her ear.
06:44Oh, wait, what's, uh...
06:49There it is.
06:51Just like his mother, Tommy's pretty good at magic,
06:54even if it's more the theatrical kind rather than the supernatural.
06:57What makes this more interesting, though,
06:59is that Lisa points out that Tommy is fast.
07:02I knew you were fast, but that's weirdly fast.
07:06If you know anything about Tommy,
07:08it's that super speed is one of his abilities,
07:11which the show will likely build up towards.
07:14Number 5. We've Seen Tommy's Story Already
07:17Remember that gut-wrenching moment at the start of Episode 2
07:20when Tommy talks about the pool mishap?
07:22How can it feel so real when I know it's impossible?
07:28How can I have two lives?
07:30We've actually seen some of that already
07:32before Vision Quest even started.
07:34Agatha all along set up that Vision's other son, Billy,
07:37was on a journey of his own trying to locate Tommy.
07:40It's underwater!
07:41There's a boy!
07:42It's a brag that they tricked him!
07:46He's gonna drown!
07:48It's a bad place!
07:50Oh, it usually is!
07:51Once he did, he transferred Tommy's soul
07:54into the body of the boy who was drowning at that pool.
07:56It's definitely a lot to take in,
07:58but that added context makes Tommy's retelling of the story
08:01all the more chilling.
08:02It was like a, like a bolt of lightning.
08:08And then, and then, and then it wasn't just me anymore.
08:13Plus, his mention of how he felt like he was struck by lightning
08:17is yet another tease of his inevitable super speed.
08:20Who knows?
08:21Maybe they'll turn Tommy into the MCU's version of The Flash.
08:24Number 4. Stepping into the Light
08:26Vision and Ultron get into a heated argument,
08:29and the conversation turns towards Vision's sense of identity.
08:33He questions who he is, which is to be expected.
08:36You're blind, Vision.
08:38To almost everything, including the truth.
08:41He's not my son.
08:43He's his.
08:45Blurry, but better.
08:47I'm not him.
08:49A little clearer.
08:51So who are you?
08:53I don't know!
08:54The ship of Theseus dilemma has been brought up so much
08:57that it is impossible to miss.
08:59That being said, Vision staring into his shiny window
09:02as he monologues might have slipped past your defenses.
09:06You see, he's lurching incredibly close towards the White Light
09:09as he ponders his identity.
09:11All I can feel is the weight of him.
09:19His legacy, his worthiness, his name.
09:24White Light is often symbolic for lots of things,
09:27like life itself, intense spirituality,
09:30or a heightened sense of enlightenment.
09:32Vision's definitely not as well adjusted as he needs to be yet,
09:35but he is getting there.
09:36Wow, for a show about sentient AIs,
09:39there is a lot of soul searching.
09:41I know who I was,
09:42but I want to feel what it's like to be him,
09:46but I can't.
09:51I just can't.
09:52Number 3.
09:53The Fiery Painting
09:54While inside Vision's mind,
09:56we get a ton of great interactions between Vision and Jarvis,
10:00but there are also nods to another AI through a specific painting.
10:03This fiery work of art displays what looks like another robot in the midst of flames.
10:08Arm yourself with reason.
10:11Emotions can be beautiful, yes,
10:14but also rash, impulsive, self-destructive.
10:18He knew that better than any of us.
10:20Though neither Jarvis nor Vision outright said the name of this other individual,
10:25it is extremely likely that this is a nod to the Human Torch.
10:28No, not the one from the Fantastic Four.
10:31We're talking about the original Human Torch.
10:33That was Jim Hammond,
10:35an android who had fire-based abilities.
10:39As the first of us,
10:40he remains a cautionary tale,
10:42a reminder of what may become of me should emotions consume me.
10:47Fun fact,
10:48he is widely considered Marvel's first ever character,
10:51even though some would say it's Namor.
10:53Either way,
10:53he is comic book royalty,
10:55and him popping up in the MCU should be a huge deal.
11:03Number 2.
11:04Paladins Got Adamantium Realms
11:06For a long time,
11:08Vibranium was built up to be the biggest and baddest material on the block.
11:11And don't get us wrong,
11:13it is still pretty valuable.
11:14But now,
11:15the MCU has made it clear that Adamantium is their newest shiny toy.
11:20Paladin uses special Adamantium bullets to strike Vision when he tries rescuing Tommy.
11:39The rounds do serious damage to our favorite robot,
11:43and it's not hard to understand why.
11:45It's a highly durable material that's even stronger than Vibranium.
11:49Heck,
11:49Adamantium is the same material that makes up Wolverine's claws.
12:00Honestly,
12:01the mere mention of Adamantium is in a way a giant nod to Wolverine.
12:05No,
12:06it doesn't mean Logan's pulling up to help Vision,
12:08but it does mean the MCU is shifting gears.
12:11I wouldn't be so sure.
12:18Number 1.
12:19The Death of Jarvis
12:21Jarvis is an MCU original,
12:23but even he had to go out eventually,
12:25and he died a hero.
12:27In a last-minute bid to save Vision and the others,
12:30Jarvis deleted his own code.
12:32This killed him,
12:33but saved his family.
12:35I've deleted my code.
12:37I'm diverting my processing power to all of you.
12:41Jarvis.
12:43But did you notice how Jarvis died?
12:46That swirl of gold energy looked similar to his form in Age of Ultron.
12:50In that movie,
12:51he was contrasted against Ultron's blue energy.
12:54I believe your intentions to be hostile.
12:57Shh.
12:59I'm here to help.
13:01Please stop.
13:03Please stop.
13:04May I?
13:05May I?
13:06I can't help.
13:08Jarvis was around for Ultron's birth,
13:10and now Ultron's around for Jarvis' death.
13:13In some ways,
13:14they are dark mirrors of the other.
13:16One is an ally of Tony Stark,
13:19the other an enemy.
13:20There's a lot to unpack,
13:22but no matter what,
13:23what's certain is that Jarvis' death
13:25was an emotional gut punch.
13:45Are there any nuggets of wisdom from these two episodes that we missed?
13:49Share your analysis in the comments,
13:51and also be sure to share your overall thoughts on the show so far.
13:54I'm here to help.
