While many visitors are familiar only with the well-trodden paths of the Basque coast, we are drawn deep into the wild hinterland to Itxassou. Here, the rushing Nive River—which we had already encountered as a gently flowing stream in Bayonne—has carved its way through the massive rock, forming a wildly romantic gorge. The trail takes us right along the water’s edge—a hike that immerses us in the rugged, unspoiled nature of the Basque Country from the very first step.

00:47Tucked deep in the green hills of the French vast country is a hidden gorge wrapped in ancient myths and
00:53wild, untamed nature.
00:58Has it that the knight Roland sliced right through the massive rock here with one huge swing of his sword
01:04to carve out a path through the mountains?
01:07These days, it's the wild emerald green water of the Neve River winding endlessly through the narrow valley that creates
01:14the stunning backdrop of the Pas de Roland.
