00:00Bill O'Brien time the head coach of Boston College football joins us every Thursday on this show good
00:06morning Bill how we doing everybody well I know you had a big influenza breakout uh over there
00:14did you end up getting it or did you avoid it I I did I avoided it we had 53
00:20guys at the flu
00:21yeah it was brutal it was brutal but uh yeah everybody's healthy now and you know we've had
00:27a really good week of practice and uh we're ready to go well Saturday at noon uh here you get
00:35a Pitt
00:35team that is coming off a loss to Bill Belichick and and his Tar Heels that's right that's right yeah
00:42Carolina did a good job in that game um Pitt's got a good team they lost their quarterback against
00:49Virginia Tech they had a really good quarterback that uh tours ACL so they've got a new quarterback
00:55in there and uh you know he did some good things against Carolina and you know we have to be
00:59ready
01:00for kind of a different style of how they play with him uh and then defensively Pitt has always done
01:05an
01:05awesome job so they're very much of an attacking defense and you know we have to be ready for
01:11a lot of pressure and you know guys that are flying to the ball we got to meet fire with
01:16fire on Saturday
01:17so is Bill like Tom Brady and he called and and gave you some tips on on how to beat
01:22this team
01:24Bill did not Bill did not call me for any tips on Pitt no I have not I have not
01:31spoken to I think the
01:33last time I I communicated with Bill was I think they beat TCU and I said congratulations
01:38that was the last time did he send you back an emoji
01:42no no emoji he said appreciate it he just he just writes back and says harumph
01:47he just has an audio memo of a snort
01:53Bill I I know you talked to local media at 11 30 today so you're going to have your hands
01:57full with
01:58them but there was shocking news yesterday the parting between the program and your GM Kenyatta
02:02Watson was it just not a fit or did something specific happen
02:07Kenyatta is no longer you know a member of the program uh I I can't get into details
02:12you know right now you know we're really just focused on Pitt and um you know that's just all
02:19I can say about it Courtney
02:20Bill when you look at you know just the ACC and what you need to do what your team needs
02:26to do what
02:26do you feel like you guys have to do to be put yourself in a position where you can actually
02:31compete and contend for an ACC championship yeah I mean you know that's a pretty involved question
02:39we got you know look I believe we're on the right track um you know I think that this is
02:46a unique
02:46school uh it's a unique challenge and uh I believe that every day we learn more about this new world
02:55of
02:55you know college football and Boston College's place in it I believe we're on the right track I think
03:01we have you know guys right now that can go out and compete at a high level uh I think
03:06we're there
03:07are things that we're doing well and you know coaching I think there's things we have to do
03:11better I think we're all in it together I think we have a very connected team uh so I I
03:16believe in
03:17the culture that we have here but in the end we like we have to go do it like we
03:21all understand that
03:22you know I've been doing this a long time it's my third head coaching job and I understand that the
03:28consequences if you don't win um but I but I also enjoy the challenge of trying to build something
03:34that you know can can be really uh you know productive when you do win so you know I feel
03:40I feel good about where we're headed but you know we all know we have to do it bill it's
03:45you're now in
03:46year three you're approaching halfway through it and it feels sadly sort of like the same old
03:52like that there's a game Saturday it's not a lot of buzz around it at what point do does the
04:00approach
04:00shift like does it feel the same to you like does it feel like you you're still struggling to get
04:06your
04:06feet here in terms of galvanizing the region behind your behind your team oh I agree with that
04:13Curtis you know we have to win you know we have to win people aren't coming to watch a 500
04:17team or
04:18below 500 team you know people are coming to to watch a winner and uh you know we haven't we
04:25haven't been able to do that enough you know my first year I thought we did a really good job
04:30we
04:30probably you know should have had more wins but we didn't our first year last year obviously took a
04:36step back uh I think it's you know taken probably longer to build this program than maybe I thought it
04:43would but you know I'm not gonna I'm I'm working very hard along with several of you know we have
04:48about 50 people in the program uh you know whether it's coaching recruiting or you know the strength
04:56staff uh operation staff that are all on the same page working very hard to try to to try to
05:01build a
05:02winner here and uh that that's you know when you win people will come watch you play if you're not
05:07winning then you know you're not gonna you're not gonna have the big crowds big stash is already
05:12taken by Peyton Tolley but do you guys have a facial hair related nickname for Mason McKenzie
05:19he shaved it oh he did oh god that's not see that's I mean aren't you supposed to stick with
05:27those things Bill when it when it uh no it was I mean I love Mason but uh and he's
05:34a he's a tough
05:35you know great competitor but yeah he decided I didn't I didn't obviously I don't who who the hell am
05:41I
05:41had to talk about you know whatever when it comes to facial hair or hair in itself but
05:46hair in general yeah hair in general but uh but yeah I came into the meeting the other day and
05:51it
05:51was it was gone um I want to ask uh Alabama has Tennessee on Saturday and they got absolutely jobbed
06:01last week by that no call P.I. how how hard is it for a team to put that behind
06:08them or is it no big
06:09deal yeah they did get jobbed on the non-P.I. but then they you know then then the guy
06:14threw a punch
06:15on the four minute drive by Georgia and gave Georgia the game so I mean you know look I think
06:19that
06:20you know Alabama Tennessee is an incredible rivalry uh as a part of two of those uh two of those
06:27games
06:27and uh you know look I think I think that in that conference each and every week you know it's
06:35as
06:35close as you can get to the NFL and you have to put games you have to have short memory
06:39and move on
06:40to the next game so I you know I'm not sure how they're doing that I don't really really know
06:45that
06:45many I know Robert Gillespie and Freddie Roach they're now awesome coaches but I don't know everybody
06:50so I'm not sure how they're doing that but that's what you have to do. Bill flew aside it does
06:55seem like
06:55the bye week came at a good time for you guys it seems like you're getting a lot of guys
06:59back
06:59for Pitt uh like a guy like Bodie who a lot of people were really worried about after that hit
07:04in Rutgers. Yeah Bodie's back yes yes he's uh you know he's been practicing all week he's had a good
07:11week Bodie's an awesome guy going back to like you know Curtis's question I think that's where we have
07:17to continue to make the most improvement we've got to continue to find guys that that fit who we are
07:25at Boston College and Bodie is a great example of that and and you know Bodie had a you know
07:31significant injury in the Rutgers game worked hard to get back and really just can't wait to get back
07:37on the field that those are the type of guys we're looking for and we're glad to have him back
07:40and we
07:41like you said we have a lot of guys back so we're at I would say pretty much full strength
07:45for the game.
07:46Bill when you talk about winning and what you guys need to do as a team to you know finding
07:51guys be
07:52competitive I had a lead I can't remember a couple days ago where college football is you know we
07:58should get an answer on whether they have a 24 team playoff system are you for that and if they
08:04do get
08:04it there are some kind of like people out there saying that you would have more alum and boosters
08:10that would want to support the program put money into the program because it would be a little bit
08:16easier to make the playoffs and by making the playoffs then you would have a real chance of winning a
08:21national championship is that something as a coach that you would like to see them move to a 2014
08:27playoff system? I'm definitely for that wig I mean I think for us at Boston College you know if you
08:34can
08:34eventually finish in the top 25 and have a shot to be in a playoff I mean that's really what
08:38it's all
08:39about so I you know I'm definitely for it I mean like this weekend we're celebrating the
08:44the uh 1986 team we're celebrating a few teams but the the 1986 team finished 15th in the country
08:51uh they beat Georgia in a bowl game that was Jack McNeil and then the 2016 Tom O'Brien's team
08:58um they they they won a bowl game they beat a big I forget exactly who they beat but but
09:02they you know
09:03they would have been in a 2014 playoff and I think that's for us at BC uh you know I
09:09think the 2014
09:10playoff is the right way to go I mean you know just I've always tried to be very upfront and
09:15honest
09:15with you guys like you know for when it was a 14 playoff that would have been very difficult you
09:20know a 12 team playoff that's difficult I think a 2014 playoff is good for Boston College I don't
09:26know if you've had much of a chance to to watch him at all but but many more than than
09:31previously
09:32are saying that Jeremiah Smith is the best wide receiver ever in college football any any opinion
09:42on that I was yeah you know I was there for a month before I took this and he was
09:46a freshman
09:47and uh I can remember he was like working out Marvin Harrison I think was there and getting ready for
09:53the draft and I just watched this guy like working out and his work ethic the thing that stood out
09:58to
09:58me was obviously he's incredibly talented but like he had an amazing work ethic for a young person
10:04and so I think like with that type of work ethic and I remember him being like a very humble
10:09guy
10:10you know I think the guy's unbelievable you know and so he can take over a game as long as
10:16you can
10:16protect you can't cover the guy and I'm sure they tell Julian saying like hey man this guy's really
10:22like if there's one guy on him he's definitely not covered if there's two he's still uncovered and if
10:26there's three I throw it up to him and give him a chance you know I think yeah let someone
10:31else be
10:32yeah but um but yeah I think Greg I think he's unbelievable I have not seen him a lot this
10:37year
10:37but I I know he's a great player all right well listen we wish you a success on on Saturday
10:43and we
10:44will talk to you again next week but it is always great to have you on the show Bill O
10:47'Brien
10:48yeah and I'm glad you guys are you know back on the Patriots bandwagon you know I mean
10:54I mean didn't you guys want to fence Drake May he's he's good to go he's good to go
11:00that was Boomer that was Boomer it was Boomer Esiason who wanted a pension we I don't I don't
11:05they're on fire yeah they are they look good they look really good I I don't think we had a
11:10chance
11:10to talk to you uh talk to you since but um Mike Vrabel on this show was telling us I
11:15was asking him
11:16about if the team looked different in practice you know uh going into that the win against the
11:23bills uh and he was saying how a team looks in practice doesn't uh doesn't matter at all and
11:29then he used an example of Curtis you remember what yeah yeah the story that was with the Texans
11:34they had a horror you guys it was around Thanksgiving and you guys had a horrible practice and on Saturday
11:41morning you MF'd Vrabel and all the coaches for going out and having a good time like the night
11:46before on Sunday you dominated in some weird way is that accurate I have never MF'd Mike Vrabel
11:53I do remember that though I think I forget who we played but yeah we had a horrible practice and
12:00we
12:01we went we ended up I think I think I gave him Thanksgiving off which I really debated I was
12:05like
12:06should I do this and I remember my wife like what are you I can't say it on air but
12:10like you know
12:10she called me a name and said you got to give him Thanksgiving off and so you know it was
12:14Thanksgiving then they came back on Friday we had a terrible practice but I believe we won
12:18but I didn't I would never I've always I've never yelled at Mike Vrabel no you don't need to
12:24he's actually scary like I it's it's he's I recently learned he can be scary right uh all right
12:31Bill it's great to talk to you we'll talk to you again next week yeah see you guys
12:34all right
12:35you
