Jeep Gladiator is the Wrangler-based pickup that tries to be both a workhorse and an off-road toy, and in this test drive it proves why so many people compare it to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Marek looks at the Gladiator’s unusual place in Jeep history, from the old Willys-Overland and Gladiator nameplates to the modern four-door truck with a bed bolted onto a Wrangler Unlimited.

The review covers the practical details too: a lockable cargo bed, removable roof and doors, rear-seat storage, and enough rear legroom for three adults. Off-road, the European-spec 3.0 diesel V6, 8-speed automatic, low range and 48:1 crawl ratio show what the Gladiator can do on mud, rocks and rough tracks, while the on-road section checks steering, braking, fuel economy and everyday drivability.

It is a detailed Jeep Gladiator review for buyers, off-road fans and pickup truck shoppers who want a real-world look at a premium lifestyle 4x4. If you are searching for Jeep Gladiator test drive, Wrangler-based pickup review, off-road pickup truck, European diesel pickup, or a Mercedes X-Class alternative, this review gives you the full picture.

00:00you've got a hobby that requires that you take a lot of toys off-road and you want something more
00:05than an ordinary pickup truck and you have money a lot of money well say hello to the gladiator jeep
00:26gladiator jeep gladiator is a wrangler based pickup truck it's not jeep's first pickup as there was the
00:32willis overland in late 1940s a t1 vw looking jeep fc from the late 1950s the original wagoneer based
00:41jeep gladiator j series which was in production from the early 1960s to 1987 then there was the
00:48jeepster commando from the late 60s the cj wrangler based scrambler from the mid 1980s and finally the
00:55original gladiator replacement the xj chiroki based jeep comanche offered in the second half of the 1980s
01:04the new gladiator tj is in layman's terms a wrangler unlimited that's the four-door one
01:11with a truck bed attached to it also the truck bed is locked with the central lock which is nice
01:18because you don't have to fumble for the key and take it out of the fob like you would have
01:23to do
01:23in a nissan navara or the mercedes-benz x-class beside the sport model the bed is painted black
01:29as standard it is also somewhat rough so at least you won't slip the bed can be covered with a
01:35soft
01:36rolling cover a soft folding cover or a hard folding cover there are no fancy ladders or handles on the
01:44tailgate like you would find on some bigger american pickup trucks however corners of the bumper have
01:49this anti-slip texture so it's easier to get up on the bed something that brands like nissan toyota or
01:59volkswagen could pick up on get it pick up the bed is 153 centimeters long closed and almost 207 centimeters
02:08long open in its widest point it's 144 centimeters across but there's only around 114 centimeters
02:16between the wheel arches so no carrying two euro pallets like you theoretically could in the x-class
02:23the 230 volt socket may be an option along with an inverter and additional storage under the rear seats
02:30in europe if you don't want your cargo to get nicked you need the tonneau cover preferably the hard one
02:36theoretically you could get some sort of a lockable case installed back here but neither solution is perfect
02:45the folding tonneau cover is secured with a couple of clips so it doesn't fly shut while you're driving
02:52there is no safe way to keep it up to make use of the entire bed you'd have to unscrew
02:58a couple of
02:58bolts and take it off completely speaking of bolts the wrangler and the gladiator which is based on the
03:04wrangler have a lot of things that you can unscrew and leave at home there is a special place for
03:10all the
03:10screws under the rear seat i could do a separate video just on the roof short version you can either
03:17get a soft top or hard top or both with the hard top there are two easily removable front quarter
03:23panels
03:24and that's for your everyday driving but if you're more hardcore and you have some storage you can remove
03:29the whole thing but that requires some more fiddling now even if you remove the whole roof i do suggest
03:35you get some sort of a soft top because my adventure with the short wrangler taught me
03:38that the weather can be unpredictable
03:47you can even drop the windshield remove the doors or replace them with smaller ones without window
03:52frames and glass when removing the doors remember in order to drive on public roads in europe you
03:58probably need at least two mirrors so you'll have to get accessory wing mirrors i've seen a set which you
04:04insert in the empty hinge space in the back can be adapted to carry larger items either by bringing
04:12the seats up or by folding the backrests now neither of these solutions is ideal but you've got a truck
04:19bed if you want to carry something larger i get the impression you fold the seats only to access the
04:25isofix anchor points and for the optional bluetooth speaker which is i'm sure a great thing if you're
04:35kind of tailgating grilling and doing that sort of stuff now under the seats are the aforementioned
04:45storage boxes which i think are quite a nice touch
04:50there is a surprising amount of leg room in the back even behind the passenger seat moved all the
04:55way back three adults should fit back here albeit the person in the middle doesn't have anything to
05:01hold on to when going over rough terrain side passengers get grab handles which were not present
05:07in the short wrangler however the short wrangler did get usb ports in the back which in the gladiator
05:14don't seem to be even available as an option the gladiator's cockpit is no different from the one
05:20in the wrangler so i encourage you to go check out that review and now let's see how the gladiator
05:26copes
05:26off-road in europe the gladiator is available only with a v6 3 liter diesel the engine produces 264 horsepower
05:39and 600 new meters of torque it comes with an 8-speed automatic and manually engaged four-wheel drive
05:45select track system the low range ratio is 2.72 to 1 and the crawl ratio is 48 to 1.
05:52there's a limited
05:53slip diff on the rear axle apart from the mojave trim which is unavailable in europe the gladiator doesn't
05:58get a rear diff lock the approach departure and break over angles are 41 25 and 18 degrees respectively
06:10the approach angle is better than in the regular wrangler while the break over and departure angles
06:16are predictably worse due to gladiator's length and long rear overhang by the way the spare wheel
06:23is under the back of the car now even the short wrangler as i remember on road tires was pretty
06:29good in light off-road situations in this place there isn't very good cell phone coverage so i
06:34would rather not get stuck this gladiator weighs 2.4 tons which is 400 kilograms more than the regular
06:41wrangler which i reviewed two years ago also here i feel what's happening with the car i'm not relying on
06:47electronics i'm in control the biggest tech gizmo the gladiator gets is a front camera with a jet wash
06:57of course this begs the question whether you're going to take your gladiator places like this
07:02whether you're going to to the dunes and mud pits or whether you use it to you know just transport
07:08your
07:08bike to a place like this maybe maybe you're more of an overlanding fan and you're going to put up
07:14a
07:14roof tent and have your gear in the truck bed either way a jeep is a jeep and it is
07:20capable enough to get you places
08:03and how's the gladiator on paved roads in my opinion it handles better than other pickup trucks of this
08:09size it's not too soft the steering feels a bit more direct than in other pickup trucks
08:17the gearbox is programmed to work under heavier bigger loads and at city speeds it often holds the
08:25gear too long so you need to accelerate for the gear to shift and then slow down back again which
08:30is not the best thing to do or you can use the kind of sequential gearbox thing which again why
08:37do you
08:37have an automatic right the brakes are surprisingly effective during an emergency stop the gladiator
08:43dives but i didn't feel that i had the pedal buried in the carpet and the car wouldn't stop
08:48we're talking on dry tarmac of course the gladiator not only stops well but it is also quite quick jeep
08:56says it'll do 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.6 seconds i checked and i got 8.76
09:03on my first attempt in
09:04two-wheel drive with all-wheel drive engaged i got 9.3 seconds in both cases 80 to 120 kilometers
09:11per
09:12hour took about six seconds and i'd not go any faster than 120 because above that speed it just keeps
09:19getting louder and fuel economy goes down the drain jeep promises around 10 liters per 100 kilometers
09:25combined which is achievable also there is no lane keeping assist this is a large off-roader and you have
09:33to
09:33pay attention speed limit is visible only in full map mode down here in the corner but it's not
09:40really traffic sign recognition it's just information stored in the sat nav so it does not always reflect
09:45the real speed limit in your area on the plus side there is adaptive cruise control
09:53for an almost 560 centimeters long car that's 24 centimeters more than the x-class and 27 centimeters
10:00more than the hilux the gladiator is relatively easy to maneuver and park there is also a reversing
10:06camera no 360 bird's eye view though those side cameras are usually under the wing mirrors which in
10:13the gladiator come off with the doors and now we come to the price i arranged this test drive a
10:19few
10:19months ago i asked for the spec sheet with the price and i clearly forgot what the price was when
10:26writing
10:26this script i looked again and i almost fell off my chair jeep gladiator overland prices start at a
10:32hefty 70 000 euro with options this test car costs a whopping 77 grand even if you register this as
10:41a
10:41company car and claim full vat it's not an easy price tag to swallow the jeep gladiator doesn't have
10:49a direct competitor here in europe it's more than a typical world course like the hilux ranger or the
10:54amarok on the other hand it's not as advanced as the land rover defender which can be had in the
10:59commercial vehicle form as well this is an off-road legend for people who like to take their hobby off
11:04road but driving off-road is just a part of their hobby the jeep gladiator is a car which the
11:10mercedes
11:11benz x-class should have been and how do you like the what is it jeep gladiator let me know
