00:00Twenty years ago, a group of people led by their local congressman left their homes in the United States and
00:06flew deep into the jungles of Guyana, South America.
00:09Their mission? To rescue relatives whom they feared were in the grip of a strange cult called the People's Temple.
00:16I was willing to lose my life to get my son.
00:21You know, my people, they wanted those boys back.
00:27I just said, you're going to have to kill me to stop me from trying to get my son back.
00:31She never got her son back.
00:33Within four days of these concerned parents' arrival in Guyana, virtually every member of the People's Temple would be dead.
01:06From May 10, 1999, this is Investigative Reports.
01:14Hello, I'm Bill Curtis.
01:15It was a paradise gone mad.
01:18In a lush tropical jungle not far from the Atlantic Ocean, a group of people had carved out a life
01:24they thought would lead to utopia.
01:26But one morning, billions around the world would wake up and hear the news.
01:30More than 900 of these visionaries were now dead.
01:34Some 20 years later, Jonestown still raises as many questions as it does answers.
01:39Was it a mass suicide or a mass murder?
01:42Was it a mind control experiment gone awry?
01:45Was the CIA somehow involved?
01:48In this edition of Investigative Reports, we go back to 1978,
01:53and we discover some fascinating revelations about Jim Jones and his so-called People's Temple.
02:09The leader of Jonestown was a man who called himself the Reverend Jim Jones.
02:13He was a sinister and charismatic figure who had built a community 1,000 strong in the jungle.
02:20What happened here is one of the biggest news stories of the century.
02:24At the time, it was billed by the press as a mass suicide, and this has formed our thinking about
02:29cults ever since.
02:30But tonight, using dramatic new evidence and testimony from survivors who have never spoken on television before,
02:37the official version of events is brought into question.
02:41There's no doubt in my mind that it was a mass murder.
02:45I never used the term suicide. I always hated that.
02:49The U.S. Army medical team were among the first eyewitnesses to the tragedy in Jonestown.
02:54At the bottom were the babies. On top of the babies were toddlers and younger children.
03:00On top of the toddlers and younger children were pre-adolescents, then teenagers, parents, and then other adults and senior
03:08citizens.
03:09I assume that probably a lot of them did not take the poison voluntarily.
03:14Anytime something dies in the tropics, the buzzards come, and they take care of the carrion.
03:19There were no buzzards in Jonestown.
03:22There were maggots and flies, but I didn't see any buzzards.
03:25And that surprised me.
03:28And then when I realized later on that the bodies were probably contaminated with cyanide,
03:36maybe the birds realized that they shouldn't be eating these bodies.
03:39But the medical team were not the only people in Jonestown that day.
03:43During the immediate aftermath, Jeff Brilli was approached by a man in civilian clothes
03:48who asked him to guard a large box of documents.
03:52And he said, I'm from the U.S. Embassy.
03:54If anybody tries to take this box away from me, shoot them.
03:57And I said, you've got to be out of your mind.
03:59I'm not going to shoot anybody.
04:01And he told me that the box was full of sensitive documents
04:03and he needed to get those to the U.S. Embassy.
04:06I think he probably was CIA.
04:07The documents then disappeared into the CIA and their contents remain secret to this day.
04:15Twenty years later, the CIA continues to deny any interest in the People's Temple.
04:20They claim that their own file on Jones is empty.
04:24But new evidence reveals startling connections between Jones and members of the U.S. intelligence community.
04:30To understand those connections and what they mean,
04:34we must first come to grips with Jim Jones himself.
04:38Who was he?
04:39The devil.
04:42Devil might have been a better person than he was.
04:44I don't know.
04:46He had a method of penetrating your mind with his eyes.
04:53And he could control you.
04:56He had cold black eyes.
04:58I've never seen a person that way.
04:59He had literally black eyes.
05:01If you would watch him and listen to him, he had you.
05:07And he knew that.
05:09Jim Jones was born in Indiana in 1931 and raised in the deep freeze of the Cold War.
05:17For years, he walked down this back alley to the elementary school in Lynn with his childhood friend, Don Foreman.
05:24I liked him.
05:25I found him to be very interesting.
05:27Whenever he would talk, I'd listen.
05:28And I really liked to listen to him.
05:31He liked to get people out in the town to listen to him.
05:35They'd all make donations.
05:38And we'd roll the money up and put him in the saddlebag, and I'd take him home.
05:43Unusual.
05:4514, 15-year-old boy.
05:47But the boy preacher was already beginning to show the dark side of his personality.
05:52During their time together in Lynn, he had tried to shoot his friend Don on three separate occasions.
05:57Now, I had been to Jim's house to have supper with him, and I said, I've got to go home.
06:03Jim said, don't leave.
06:05And he was very forceful.
06:08And about that time, he reached over and he grabbed that pistol.
06:11I took about 10 steps on down his steps, and he let the first one go.
06:17And it missed me, and it lodged in a tree.
06:20I could see it hit the bark of a tree.
06:22The tree was maybe that big around.
06:24And I could see the bark fly off the side of the tree.
06:27And so I turned, and then I really started running, and he fired again.
06:31And I don't know where the bullet went.
06:33It didn't hit me.
06:34But that was, like I say, a .38 or a .45.
06:38And that's the last time I ever went to his house.
06:44While still a teenager, Jones established a pulpit on the street corners of Richmond, Indiana,
06:49where he sold monkeys door-to-door in order to fund his activities.
06:54There he came to know a juvenile police officer named Dan Matron,
06:57whose improbable path Jones would cross and recross in the years ahead.
07:04By the late 1950s, Jones had married his high school sweetheart, Marceline,
07:09and established an interracial church based in Indianapolis.
07:13He called it the People's Temple.
07:16At first, the church prospered.
07:18But Jones had a secret life.
07:22Matron left Richmond and joined a sometime CIA cover at the State Department.
07:27Coincidentally or not, Jones suddenly became of deep interest
07:31to the most clandestine department of the agency.
07:34Whose activities included mind-control experiments,
07:37attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro,
07:39and operations to infiltrate and disrupt black organizations.
07:43For reasons that the CIA has always refused to explain,
07:48they opened a secret file in Jones' name.
07:51Suddenly, Jones abandoned his church.
07:53And armed with two passports,
07:55the young charismatic preacher traveled to a series of political hotspots.
08:00Mexico, Cuba, Guyana, and Brazil.
08:03Though he spoke no Portuguese,
08:05in 1962, Jones moved to Belo Horizonte,
08:08a small town in Brazil.
08:10With no apparent means of support,
08:12he rented an expensive house
08:14and began to make in-depth studies
08:16into voodoo, faith healing, mass conversion, and ESP,
08:20a key investigative element
08:21of the CIA's mind-control program.
08:24But Jones was not the only person there from Richmond, Indiana.
08:28He later bragged of visits to his neighbor,
08:31Dan Matron.
08:32The former police chief
08:33was now working for a sometime CIA cover
08:36at the U.S. consulate,
08:38training Brazilian police
08:39in the subtleties of hostile interrogation.
08:44Jones was also contacted
08:45by another key member of American intelligence at that time,
08:48John Lodison,
08:49who'd been kicked out of the Soviet Union for spying.
08:53In Brazil, he met with Jones
08:54for reasons that the CIA still refuses to explain.
08:59But Jones' stay in Brazil did not last.
09:02He left the country soon after a newspaper article appeared
09:05claiming he was a CIA agent.
09:08Returning to the USA,
09:09Jones moved the People's Temple
09:11to Northern California,
09:13where its membership grew rapidly.
09:15Let a phone put on you
09:18That you are with us
09:21Shake hands, look at me
09:24From its headquarters in Ukiah,
09:27a fleet of temple buses
09:29shuttled Jones' followers
09:30to large-scale services
09:32in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
09:34Jones was a great showman,
09:35mixing powerful oratory
09:37with spectacular faith healing.
09:44You've been feeling pain here in the chest
09:46and in the back.
09:48I do not know you and you've told me
09:49or no one else the things I just mentioned.
09:51No, you sure have me.
10:01Many believed in his faith healing
10:04and still do today.
10:05He called me out and he said,
10:09you have cancer.
10:11And I look and I said,
10:14when it's in, I said,
10:15well, I was getting mighty poor, you know.
10:18So he said, go to the restroom.
10:21So he said, go to the restroom.
10:21And he called the nurse's name
10:23and told her to take me,
10:25go to the bathroom with me
10:27and tell me how to do
10:29and what to do.
10:30The cancers, they used to take the innards,
10:33the gizzards and stuff of chickens
10:34and they would rot them under, like, Jim's house.
10:38And then when they were real rotten,
10:40then the nurses would draw blood
10:41and so they would get Kleenex
10:44and they would put these gizzards,
10:47these rotten gizzards,
10:48and then their blood
10:49and they would take, you know,
10:51he would mostly pick older black women.
10:54And it come from my body.
10:57That what she had on that paper
11:00come from my body.
11:01I seen it.
11:03I was in there by myself.
11:04I smelled it.
11:06And this was, you know,
11:08walked around the church
11:09and supposedly I never got real close,
11:12but there was quite an odor to it.
11:14I didn't think that I could smell like that
11:17and I'm alive.
11:26Oh, I just had a lot of Americas happen
11:28from Jim.
11:48There may have been a strong touch
11:50of Carnival Sideshow to Jones' faith healing,
11:52but his sermons were laced
11:54with a kind of messianic socialism
11:56that appealed directly to the poor
11:58and disaffected.
11:59What's your sign, God, every doctor?
12:01You ask and beg and pleaded
12:03for help with your suffering
12:04and he never gave you any food,
12:06he never provided a bed,
12:07he never gave you a home.
12:08But I, the socialist worker,
12:10God,
12:10have given you all those things.
12:13It's mercy.
12:14And he won't die
12:16if you drop one.
12:18He will die
12:19if you stand up.
12:21He will die
12:23if you judge what you're down.
12:46If you've been thinking about
12:48jumping into a rugged new Montana,
12:49I need more room!
12:51Now's a really good time.
12:53Never seen a minivan do that before.
12:56Maybe it's not really a minivan.
12:58Life was more exciting in Montana.
13:00Now jump into a rugged Montana
13:02with this limited time offer,
13:03but get a move on
13:04because the train's leaving the station.
13:42Craig,
13:43I don't know.
13:45Fair enough.
13:46Maybe this will help.
13:48As you can see,
13:49I love you more than anything in the world.
13:51Note the dramatic increase
13:52in the past seven months.
13:54This shows how much we have in common.
13:57My 10-year gross earnings potential.
14:00A composite of what our kids might look like.
14:03I like what you've done here, Craig.
14:05Sometimes it's not just what you say,
14:07but how you say it.
14:09Kinkos, express yourself.
14:10Reach across time and see yourself.
14:15You stand tall against terrifying enemies.
14:46You build masterpieces
14:48How do you take down a madman
14:50without firing a shot?
14:51Talk to me.
14:52Hostage negotiators of the NYPD.
14:55On an all-new Investigator Report.
15:08By the early 70s,
15:10the People's Temple was well-established
15:11in the Bay Area.
15:12But by then,
15:13Jones was unable to tolerate
15:15even the slightest dissent
15:16from his people.
15:17In nighttime sessions
15:19at the San Francisco Temple,
15:20members were regularly abused,
15:22both verbally and physically,
15:24in confrontational meetings.
15:27Everyone in the room,
15:30about 100 people,
15:31were required to stand up
15:32and defame you.
15:34You know,
15:35you're subject to get kicked.
15:36They would go upside your head
15:37to make sure you look straight at Jones.
15:39People got knocked out,
15:41you know,
15:42and revived with water
15:43thrown on them,
15:44you know,
15:45and actually continued whooping.
15:47Jones' choice of punishment
15:48for a man accused
15:49of child molestation
15:50was particularly brutal.
15:54Jim had him
15:55in a room upstairs
15:57in the San Francisco Temple.
15:58And I was brought in
16:00midway through
16:01what was happening,
16:02and he was being beaten
16:04with a rubber hose.
16:06Jim explained
16:07that this was a punishment
16:08that had to be.
16:10However,
16:10it became so violent
16:11and so frightening.
16:14He was,
16:14he was,
16:15first he was beaten
16:15on his body,
16:16and then he was beaten
16:18just on his penis.
16:21Jones also sexually abused
16:22members of the church,
16:23as Debbie Layton
16:24discovered
16:25in the children's restroom
16:26of the San Francisco Temple.
16:28He told me
16:29to lay down
16:30next to the urinal,
16:32the one where
16:33all the little children
16:34had peed that day,
16:36the little toddlers.
16:38And with his cloak,
16:39he covered us both.
16:46And then after that,
16:48he apologized.
16:50He said he did it for me.
16:53I needed to know
16:54just how pretty I was.
16:56We got a double edge here,
16:58you know,
16:58because like I said,
16:59there was the,
17:02there was the public face
17:04as well as the family face.
17:06What we've seen
17:07in the family atmosphere,
17:10the public didn't see.
17:12What the public saw in Jones
17:14was a powerful force for good.
17:16In 1975,
17:18he was voted
17:18San Francisco's
17:20humanitarian of the year.
17:21When George Moscone
17:22was running for mayor,
17:24Jones put the People's Temple
17:25political machine to work.
17:27It was like 500 people
17:28were leafleting on the street
17:29within 30 minutes.
17:30But Jones said,
17:32if you win,
17:33I want a job.
17:35Moscone made Jones
17:36commissioner of housing
17:37for the city.
17:38He celebrated his new appointment
17:40with a speech.
17:41His subject,
17:42the evils of suicide,
17:44aimed at those people
17:45who killed themselves
17:46by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge.
17:51But Jones was planning
17:52to move the People's Temple
17:54out of San Francisco
17:55altogether.
17:56He had a master plan
17:57to enlarge the People's Temple
17:59and open up communities
18:00all over Latin America.
18:02He ordered several hundred
18:03of his followers
18:04to the country of Guyana.
18:08Well, frankly,
18:09I had never heard of it.
18:11All he told me was
18:12that it was just a little country
18:14down in South America.
18:16They win no takes now,
18:18you know,
18:19not me.
18:23Debbie Layton was 19
18:24when she joined
18:25the People's Temple.
18:26In 1972,
18:28by the time she was 23,
18:29she was a key member
18:31of the white matriarchy
18:32who formed the temple's
18:33inner circle.
18:34She was one of the first
18:36to arrive
18:36in what became
18:38Jonestown.
18:39When the first pioneers
18:41from the Bay Area
18:42came down here,
18:43they loved it.
18:44You know,
18:44they cleared the land
18:45and they built
18:47their cabins
18:47and they lived just,
18:49they lived, you know,
18:51as village people.
18:52In the beginning,
18:53Jonestown was an
18:54extraordinary success story.
18:56Jon's followers
18:57had carved out
18:58an almost utopian
18:59society in the jungle.
19:01What I thought
19:02we were doing,
19:03you know,
19:03which was building
19:04a community
19:05for our children
19:07that was progressive,
19:09that was peaceful,
19:11that where people
19:12could live in harmony
19:15of different races
19:17and different backgrounds,
19:18different socio-economic
19:19and cultural backgrounds.
19:21That's what I saw
19:22Jonestown as.
19:24You know,
19:25Promised Land
19:25was going to be
19:26just a beautiful country
19:27that we were going to.
19:29And he had come here before
19:31and taken movies,
19:33but they were edited
19:35quite well, actually.
19:37Flour.
19:40Flour.
19:41Rice.
19:42Black-eyed peas.
19:45More peas.
19:47They have different containers
19:48around the place.
19:49We couldn't go through
19:49all the tremendous inventory.
19:51They built up Kool-Aid,
19:52various kind of cookies.
19:54I believe to this day
19:56that if you remove
19:57Jim Jones from the picture,
20:00that Jonestown
20:01would have been successful.
20:03Four years after his followers
20:05went to Guyana,
20:06Jim Jones was about
20:07to move there permanently.
20:08But he was in trouble
20:10in San Francisco.
20:11He was already
20:12undergoing treatment
20:13for psychiatric disorders
20:15when he was arrested
20:16after indecently
20:17exposing himself
20:18to a police officer
20:19in a public washroom.
20:21His lawyers got
20:22the charges dropped,
20:23but by now,
20:24investigative journalists
20:25had the scent
20:26of a good story.
20:28The New West magazine
20:29published an article
20:30about beatings,
20:31corruption,
20:32and rape
20:33in the People's Temple.
20:34As soon as the article
20:35was published,
20:36Jones moved 700 more
20:38temple members
20:39to Guyana.
20:40They took me
20:40to the airport
20:41and I jumped
20:42on the United Airlines
20:43and I'm boom.
20:45Beverly Oliver came home
20:46to find her sons gone.
20:48I found the rooms
20:49in a shambler.
20:51Pictures knocked off
20:52the wall
20:53like they was
20:53leaving in a hurry.
20:55Almost immediately
20:56after Jones arrived
20:57at the camp,
20:58conditions began
20:59to deteriorate
21:00as Jones turned
21:01his dangerous paranoia
21:03on his increasingly
21:04fearful followers.
21:12conditions at Jonestown
21:14would soon go
21:14from bad
21:15to worse.
21:16When investigative
21:17reports returns,
21:18the punishing cries
21:19of children
21:20would now be heard
21:21throughout the camp
21:22nearly every night.
21:26Help me!
21:27Need brakes?
21:29Now during the Midas
21:30$40 lifetime

21:38Go safely.
21:39Go Midas.
21:41We're looking at the
21:42third, fourth,
21:43and fifth planets
21:44to help you remember
21:451010-345.
21:47The simple way
21:48to save up to 50%
21:49on international calls.
21:51Jupiter is the fifth planet,
21:52not Saturn.
21:53Whoops.
21:56Nobody predicted
21:57when SUVs were created
21:59by some crazy Californian

22:22with the best of them.

23:45Biography Magazine.
23:47Every life has a story.
23:57Jonestown was in its fourth year
23:59when Jones arrived in 1977.
24:02Conditions had never been easy.
24:04But when he took over
24:05the agricultural mission
24:06became a labor camp.
24:09Jim had armed guards.
24:12I mean young men
24:14and women
24:15who were told
24:16that they needed
24:16to watch everybody.
24:18And it kept you
24:19working hard.
24:21The day consisted of
24:22you get up at 6 o'clock
24:23in the morning
24:25and you go to breakfast.
24:26You get one bowl of rice.
24:28At that time
24:29I think it was
24:29rice and milk
24:31is what it was.
24:34And the rice and milk
24:36consisted sometimes
24:36of bugs floating around
24:37all the top.
24:39We headed out
24:40to the fields
24:41and you vied
24:42to go really far out
24:43actually
24:44because you couldn't
24:45hear Jim
24:46over the loudspeakers.
24:49Jonestown was wired
24:50with loudspeakers
24:52and Jim spoke
24:5324 hours a day on it.
24:55When he wasn't speaking
24:56the tapes that they'd made
24:57of him speaking
24:58played on and on
25:01and on
25:01about the conspiracy
25:02against us
25:03about how the United States
25:04government
25:04was coming in
25:06to kill us.
25:07We didn't know
25:08Jim had gunfire
25:09going off
25:10in the jungle
25:11but we heard it
25:12and he said
25:12it was the United States
25:14government
25:14coming in
25:15to torture the children
25:17and kill us.
25:18And Jim would make
25:19these announcements
25:20and he'd say
25:21I'm sending out
25:23some children
25:24and some of my aides
25:27and other people
25:28you won't know
25:29who they are
25:29to pretend
25:30they want to leave.
25:32And it's a test.
25:33It's a loyalty test.
25:34And if anyone
25:35comes to you
25:36you're to report them.
25:38You didn't know
25:38who it would be
25:39so you just
25:39never put the place down
25:42and how much
25:43you enjoyed it there
25:44how much you
25:44loved the place
25:45and how great he was
25:47and how father
25:49was so nice
25:50and you had to
25:50call him father.
25:51You just never
25:52said anything bad
25:53about the place
25:54because if you did
25:55you would be
25:57coming up there
25:57that night
25:58they had this
25:59discipline thing
26:00where they would
26:00discipline kids.
26:02It was a punishment
26:03for the child
26:04and the parent.
26:05They'd be taken away
26:06from the pavilion
26:07at night
26:08and you could hear
26:09them screaming.
26:10And as they screamed
26:11that microphone
26:12was put to their mouth
26:13so that the whole
26:13compound could hear.
26:16And they'd be taken
26:16to a well
26:17in the distance
26:18at night
26:19and they'd be
26:20tied by ropes
26:22and you know
26:22held down in it
26:24and they'd go down
26:24and they couldn't
26:26see and something
26:26would grab at them
26:27and pull them down.
26:29It was called
26:30Bigfoot at the time.
26:31In 1978
26:32Debbie Layton
26:33and Grace Stowen
26:34both defected
26:35with terrifying
26:35accounts of what
26:36was happening
26:37inside the camp.
26:38They also told
26:39of full scale
26:40rehearsals
26:40for mass suicide
26:42in the jungle.
26:42I'll talk to
26:43a psychiatrist
26:44whatever
26:45but I believe
26:45I was brainwashed.
26:47With other defectors
26:48the two women
26:49began their campaign
26:50to expose Jones
26:51and rescue
26:51their loved ones.
26:52They flew to Guyana
26:53but to their surprise
26:55they got no help
26:56from American authorities.
26:57Everybody
26:58closed the door
26:59in our face.
27:02Once in the capital
27:03Georgetown
27:03they were met
27:04with apparent
27:05delaying tactics
27:06by the embassy staff.
27:08So we'll give you
27:0830 minutes of our time
27:09to
27:11because we want to hear
27:12from you
27:12about 30 minutes
27:13and
27:14they put the slideshow
27:16on of
27:16people in Jonestown
27:17playing baseball
27:18and things like that
27:20and we balked at that
27:21and we said
27:21wait a minute
27:21this is propaganda
27:23this is orchestrated
27:24we know it
27:25we've been there
27:25we've seen it
27:26what do you think
27:27we're nuts?
27:28And they said
27:29look
27:30if you don't watch
27:30this film
27:31and you're wasting
27:31time by the way
27:32because the 30 minutes
27:33is going
27:35we're not talking
27:35to you.
27:36The American ambassador
27:38John Burke
27:39was equally unwilling
27:40to discuss the matter
27:41with the relatives.
27:42I would like to have
27:42this opportunity
27:44to talk
27:44together
27:45in a candid way
27:46because there are
27:47sensitive considerations
27:48and legal considerations
27:49involved.
27:50The American immigrant
27:51was a bastard
27:53and I hope
27:54he see this.
27:56And we had
27:57birth certificates
27:58pictures
27:58everything
27:59to show
27:59that we were
28:00the parents
28:01of those two boys.
28:03and he was
28:04no help
28:05whatsoever.
28:07His demeanor
28:08was always
28:08you know
28:09what's the problem
28:09here folks
28:10there's nothing
28:10going on
28:11we're keeping track
28:12we haven't seen
28:12anything that's
28:13you know
28:14they have one gun
28:15license to them
28:16and you know
28:18I don't know
28:19what your concerns
28:19are
28:20they're really
28:20I mean it was just
28:21they always just
28:22put us off.
28:23Leading the concerned
28:24relatives
28:25was their local
28:25congressman
28:26Leo Ryan
28:27he too was
28:28kept in the dark
28:28while his requests
28:30for information
28:30were refused
28:31on the grounds
28:32of privacy
28:32the local
28:33US embassy
28:34kept Jones
28:35informed
28:35of all the
28:36questions
28:36Ryan was asking
28:37Jim was
28:38that I intend
28:41to keep
28:42pushing
28:42as long
28:43as I'm here.
28:44Well he was
28:45such a
28:45kind man
28:47so compassionate
28:49didn't get
28:49excited about
28:50nothing
28:52I would be
28:53okay
28:54it'll be
28:55it'll be fine
28:55just take it
28:56easy
28:56it'll be fine
28:57that's just
28:57the way he was
29:00for some time
29:01Ryan had been
29:01a thorn
29:02in the side
29:02of the CIA
29:03he had recently
29:04pushed through
29:05congressional
29:05legislation
29:06that curtailed
29:07the agency's
29:08covert foreign
29:09activities
29:09as Ryan
29:10prepared for
29:11a first-hand
29:12look at
29:12Jonestown
29:13he was joined
29:14by a State
29:14Department agent
29:15Richard Dwyer
29:16what he didn't
29:17know
29:17was that Dwyer
29:18was working
29:19undercover
29:23the man
29:24named Dwyer
29:25was the head
29:26of the CIA
29:27I mean the CIA
29:28had a presence
29:29here
29:29it was an
29:30unrevealed
29:31presence at
29:32the time
29:34as Ryan
29:35and the relatives
29:35were about to
29:36depart for
29:36Jonestown
29:37Jones himself
29:38was slipping
29:39deeper into a
29:40drug-induced
29:41paranoia
29:44he became more
29:46of a dictator
29:46and because he
29:48was closing us
29:49and himself
29:49off from the
29:50world
29:50and he had
29:52no true
29:53input
29:54that was
29:55level-headed
29:56he became
29:57a part of his
29:59own paranoia
30:00and
30:01and down
30:02here
30:03was
30:03completely
30:04insane
30:06immediately
30:07prior to
30:08Ryan's
30:08arrival
30:09Jones
30:09transferred
30:10one million
30:10dollars
30:11to accounts
30:11in Panama
30:12and Switzerland
30:13what few
30:14knew
30:14was that
30:15a cargo
30:15of cyanide
30:16was coming
30:16by river
30:17to Jonestown
30:18and
30:19congressman
30:19Ryan
30:20and the
30:20relatives
30:20were about

33:30jones was busy organizing congressman ryan's reception
33:34we were told
33:37not to act
33:39and not to go up and speak to him
33:41or
33:41and to act nice
33:42just like any additional act

36:35about the place
36:36or something
36:36to that extent
36:37and
36:38all of a sudden
36:39at the wind
36:40we could see
36:41another
36:42tractor trailer
36:43coming down
36:44the airstrip
36:45i came out of the aircraft
36:46to
36:47to get them to board
36:48because you're running late
36:49i think it was about
36:50ten to six at a time
36:52and then from the top end
36:53i saw this red tractor trailer
36:56they pulled up
36:57on the left hand side
36:58of the plane
36:59and
37:00up popped about
37:01six or eight people
37:03with rifles
37:04you know
37:05m16
37:06shotguns
37:07everything
37:08the door was still open

37:11they started shooting
37:13the first hit
37:14was an nbc cameraman
37:15shot to death
37:16along with five others
37:17including ryan
37:18then i heard
37:20what i thought
37:21was pellets
37:21or stones
37:22in the aircraft
37:25and the guys
37:26who were next to me
37:28were not there
37:29as i looked around
37:30because they were shot
37:31and they just
37:32they riddled
37:33the whole plane
37:33it was like swiss cheese
37:35they just
37:35they just tore up
37:36tore it up
37:37and the airbag
37:38started screaming
37:39and hollering
37:39telling the pilot
37:40to take off
37:41and he constantly
37:42saying i can't
37:43they shot off
37:44the wheels
37:44shot the wheels
37:45me and my girlfriend
37:47started to jump
37:47to the floor
37:49and her mother
37:51behind her
37:52us
37:53me and my girlfriend
37:55wasn't so lucky
37:56she had buckled
37:58her seatbelt
37:59she couldn't get out
37:59of it in time
38:00and a bullet
38:02came through
38:02and
38:03and uh

38:11a lot about that
38:12and they shot her
38:13through the head
38:15like they did
38:15rhyming all the reporters
38:17they shot him
38:18and then they walked
38:19up on him
38:19and shot the brains out
38:22after the initial onslaught
38:23the assassin
38:24selected victims
38:25among the wounded
38:26and executed them
38:28there was a guy
38:29behind who was shooting
38:32he had what i
38:33probably put
38:34probably could have been
38:35like a 45
38:35he was just
38:37going around
38:38making sure
38:39everybody
38:39was dead
38:42one man who was
38:43not executed

39:14to the main bedroom
39:15and into the adjoining

42:49having dealt with congressman ryan jones
42:52now turned his insanity
42:54on the temple's faithful
42:56at this point in time
42:57jones town had become surreal
43:00almost everything that was going on
43:02seemed surreal to me
43:03i mean by this time
43:05i pretty much figured out
43:06this this guy was
43:07mad
43:08but he
43:09said i've never
43:11never seen
43:12or felt jones town
43:13so peaceful
43:13or quiet
43:15and i
43:15remember getting a chill
43:17just
43:18coursed through my body
43:19because jones town
43:19had never been in more agony
43:21had never been so
43:22less together
43:24later
43:24tim carter found jones
43:26in a heated discussion
43:27with temple member
43:28dick tropp
43:29dick tropp was saying
43:31we can't
43:31we can't die
43:32this makes no sense
43:33he said we just
43:34we go on
43:35we've worked too hard
43:36we've built too much
43:37you know
43:37we can make this work
43:38we can win
43:39we can survive
43:41maria katsaras
43:41walked up to jones
43:42and whispered in his ear
43:45and he looked at her
43:46and said
43:47isn't there any way
43:48to make it taste
43:49make it taste
43:50less bitter
43:51and um
43:52she said no
43:53apparently not
43:54and he said
43:54something like
43:55we'll do the best you can
43:56and i
43:57thought i have to
43:59get out of here
44:00but then the tractor
44:01trailer returned
44:02with news that
44:02congressman ryan
44:03was dead
44:05congressman's dead
44:07i don't know
44:08who fired the shot
44:08i don't know

44:10as far as i'm concerned
44:11i killed him
44:13you understand
44:14what i'm saying
44:14i killed him
44:16he had no business
44:17coming i told him
44:18not to come
44:20from his seat
44:21in the pavilion
44:22jones recorded
44:23the last desperate
44:24hour of the people's
44:26temple
44:26in front of him
44:27more than 900
44:29of his followers
44:29who were surrounded
44:30by guards
44:31holding rifles
44:32and crossbows
44:33for all but a few
44:35there was no escape
44:37subsequent medical
44:38examinations
44:39revealed that many
44:40of the dead
44:41had been murdered
44:41held down
44:43and injected
44:44with cyanide
44:53i wanted
44:54my wife and son
44:55and
44:56and i wanted
44:57out of
44:57jonestown
44:59and jones
45:00looked at me
45:00with
45:01probably the coldest
45:02look i've ever seen
45:03from any human being
45:03in my life
45:04and said
45:04will you take care
45:05of your son
45:06first
45:08and i don't think
45:09we should sit here
45:10and take any more
45:11time for our children
45:12to be endangered
45:13but if they come
45:14after our children
45:15and we give them
45:16our children
45:17then our children
45:18will suffer forever
45:21no jim had always planned
45:23that the children
45:24would be taken first

47:13he was about
47:1413 years old
47:15his first name
47:16was Thurman
47:18Thurman actually
47:20stumbled
47:20onto me
47:22you know
47:22and he was
47:23falling to the ground
47:24and as he was

47:47I turned to my
47:49right
47:49for whatever reason
47:51and I saw my
47:53wife standing there
47:54with tears
47:55running down
47:56her cheeks
47:57and she was
47:58holding her son
47:59and a nurse
48:00was squirting
48:01poison in his mouth
48:03and after
48:05I saw this
48:06this image
48:08of my son
48:11my whole
48:12body
48:13my whole psyche
48:14was overloaded
48:15I couldn't
48:16I'd almost
48:17gone past
48:17the point
48:18of even
48:18thinking
48:19and was
48:20feeling so
48:20much
48:21that
48:23I couldn't
48:24feel anymore
48:25it was just
48:29darkness
48:34and blackness
48:37how many
48:38are dead
48:40oh God
48:42almighty
48:42God
48:45the torch
48:46is not ours

48:48our hands
48:51I think
48:52it's humane
48:54and
48:55you know
48:55I've been asked
48:56why didn't you
48:57knock over the
48:57poison
48:58you know
48:58why didn't you
49:00kill him
49:01and I can't
49:02answer that
49:03because those are
49:03rational questions
49:04and logical
49:05questions
49:06being asked of
49:07somebody who just
49:07watched their son
49:08be murdered
49:09lay down your life
49:11with dignity
49:11don't lay down
49:12with tears
49:13and agony
49:14just stepping over
49:15in another plane
49:16don't be this way
49:17stop this
49:19hysterics
49:20several of us
49:21about 20 of us
49:22had already
49:23made a decision
49:24that we were going
49:25to try to run
49:26that we were going
49:26to you know
49:27we were going
49:28to leave this
49:28if this came to this
49:29and I was
49:31I was gone ho
49:32you know
49:33I was that serious
49:34about mine
49:34and where that
49:36each and every one of them
49:37just came to me
49:38and told me
49:38that they
49:38they couldn't do it
49:40you know
49:41they had lost
49:41their kids
49:43they had lost
49:44you know
49:45loved ones
49:45and mothers
49:46you know
49:46it was just
49:47something
49:48you know
49:48somebody that was
49:49close to them
49:50was gone
49:50and they
49:51they couldn't
49:52they wouldn't be
49:53able to make it
50:03so I was on stage
50:04for just
50:05seconds
50:07and I stepped
50:08back off the stage
50:09and my wife
50:10was
50:12leaning on the ground
50:13a few feet
50:14behind
50:15the pavilion
50:16and Malcolm
50:18was dead
50:21and I knelt down
50:22next to her
50:22and I held her
50:25and I just told her
50:26I love you so much
50:29and I wished
50:29I could have
50:30gotten away
50:32for her to be
50:32out of there
50:33and at that
50:34I felt her
50:35dying in my arms
50:39and at that
50:39point in time
50:40I didn't
50:41give a shit
50:42about anything
50:43or anybody
50:45I just wanted
50:46to live
50:46I wanted out
50:47of there
50:54I tell you
50:55I don't care
50:55how many screams
50:56you hear
50:56I don't care
50:57how many
50:57anguished cries
50:58death
50:59is a million times
51:00possible to
51:01ten more days
51:02of this life
51:02if he knew
51:03what was ahead
51:04of you
51:04if he knew
51:04what was ahead
51:05of you
51:05you'd be glad
51:06that he's
51:06stepping over
51:06tonight
51:07I thought
51:08about
51:09laying down
51:10among the dead
51:11I did that
51:12and lay down
51:13there for
51:13I don't
51:14probably about
51:1515 minutes
51:17please
51:17for God's sake
51:18let's get on
51:19with it
51:19we've lived
51:20we've lived
51:21as no other
51:21people have lived
51:22and loved
51:22we've had
51:23as much of this
51:24world as you're
51:24going to get
51:25let's just be
51:26done with it
51:26let's be done
51:27with the agony
51:28of it
51:28that's when I
51:29began to run
51:30and I started
51:31hauling the ass
51:32as fast as I
51:33could
51:33straight out
51:34to the jungle
51:36though his
51:36followers were
51:37dying all around
51:38him
51:38the last tape
51:39reveals that
51:40Jones himself
51:41clearly intended
51:42to survive
51:43I want to go
51:44I want to see you
51:45go though
51:45they can take me
51:46and do with me
51:47whatever they
51:47want to do
51:48I want to see you
51:48go
51:49I don't want to
51:49see you go
51:50through this hell
51:50no more
51:52no more
51:52no more
51:53no more
51:55in the middle
51:56of the carnage
51:56one of Jones
51:57closest aides
51:58Maria Katsaris
51:59handed Tim Carter
52:01one and a half
52:01million dollars
52:02in cash
52:03with orders
52:04to take it
52:04to the Soviet
52:05embassy
52:06the assignment
52:07itself was
52:08ridiculous
52:10but it was
52:11a way
52:12to keep
52:14to keep going
52:16they'll pay for this
52:17they brought this
52:18upon us
52:19and they'll pay
52:20for that
52:20I just said
52:21this is ridiculous
52:23carrying these
52:24suitcases
52:24and we dropped
52:26one of them
52:28all over
52:29and it's good
52:30no
52:31no
52:31sorrow
52:32that it's all over
52:33I'm glad it's over
52:36we dropped
52:36another suitcase
52:37I think
52:38at what we
52:39called the
52:39piggery
52:39or where the
52:40chickens were
52:40and so on
52:41so by the time
52:41we got even
52:42out to the road
52:42there was only
52:43one suitcase
52:43left
52:45and that one
52:46was dumped
52:47on the railroad
52:47tracks
52:56and the last thing
52:59that I heard
52:59from
53:00from
53:01Jonestown
53:02was
53:02Jones' voice
53:03on
53:04the loudspeaker
53:05saying
53:06mother
53:06mother
53:07mother
53:07mother
53:08mother
53:08mother
53:08mother
53:09mother
53:09please
53:10mother
53:11please
53:12please
53:12please
53:13don't
53:14don't do this
53:15don't do this
53:17and I'm certain
53:18the only person
53:19called mother
53:19in Jonestown
53:20was Marceline Jones
53:21and in reality
53:24Marceline was trying
53:25to stop the killing
53:25and he was
53:26talking down
53:27to her
53:38Jones himself
53:39was one of the
53:40last to die
53:40a single gunshot
53:42to the head
53:42sometime around
53:43midnight
53:44his killer
53:45has never been
53:46known
53:47at 3.30
53:49in the morning
53:49when everyone
53:50was dead
53:50and several hours
53:51before anyone
53:52arrived
53:52a radio message
53:54was sent
53:54from Jonestown
53:55using a secret
53:56CIA channel
53:57reporting what
53:58it described
53:59as a mass
53:59suicide
54:00this was the
54:01message that
54:02shaped our
54:02view of
54:03Jonestown
54:03for years
54:04to come
54:04even though
54:05the best
54:06medical evidence
54:06suggests
54:07that most
54:08of those
54:08who died
54:09had been
54:09murdered
54:09the question
54:11then becomes
54:11who sent
54:12that message
54:13the only
54:14functioning radio
54:15in the area
54:15belonged to
54:16the local
54:16American
54:17intelligence
54:17officer
54:18Richard Dwyer
54:19though he
54:19always denied
54:20going back
54:21to Jonestown
54:22that night
54:22the last
54:23tape tells
54:24a very
54:24different
54:24story
54:26take Dwyer
54:27on down
54:28to the
54:28east house
54:30get Dwyer
54:31out of here
54:31before something
54:32happens to him
54:35Dwyer
54:37I'm not
54:38talking about
54:38you
54:38I said
54:40Dwyer
54:42though more
54:43than 900
54:43Americans
54:44had died
54:45Richard Dwyer
54:46and other
54:47U.S.
54:47embassy officials
54:48would later
54:48receive medals
54:49and promotions
54:54a multi-million
54:55dollar lawsuit
54:56was subsequently
54:57filed by
54:57Congressman Ryan's
54:59daughter
54:59and the
54:59relatives of
55:00those who
55:00died
55:01the suit
55:02described the
55:03deaths as a
55:03massacre
55:04and alleged that
55:05Jones was an
55:06agent or
55:06operative of the
55:07Central Intelligence
55:08Agency
55:09it was dismissed
55:11on a technicality
55:12and never
55:13tried
55:29two years after
55:31Jonestown a house
55:32intelligence committee
55:33said it found no
55:34evidence suggesting a
55:35CIA connection to Jim
55:36Jones or his followers
55:38and he disagreed
55:39maintaining the
55:40congressional inquiry was
55:41too superficial and
55:43ignored key evidence
55:44a few years later a
55:46California court
55:46approved a final
55:47settlement of nearly
55:49ten million dollars
55:50for survivors of
55:51Jonestown and for
55:53relatives of those
55:54who died there
55:54the money came from
55:56secret funds
55:57tracked back to Jim
55:58Jones but kept
55:59hidden throughout
56:00Latin America
56:01ironically in another
56:03suit the biggest
56:04money winner of all
56:04was the U.S.
56:05government
56:05it got 1.4 million
56:08dollars for
56:08airlifting the
56:09victims bodies out
56:10of Jonestown
56:11back to the United
56:13States
