00:00:00...to the front, putting his Ferrari in the slipstream of championship leader Fernando Alonso's Renault
00:00:05as Formula One's newest star battled its greatest champion.
00:00:10This is incredible. This is just remarkable.
00:00:13The first Spaniard to lead the world champion will add luster to his season
00:00:17by holding off the reigning champion to take his third victory of the season
00:00:23in an absolutely epic battle here at Imola.
00:00:27But if Schumacher and Ferrari are truly back in race-winning form,
00:00:31they know they can afford no such mistakes in qualifying this weekend in Barcelona.
00:00:35Not on a circuit where the team spend hundreds of hours and millions of dollars testing.
00:00:40Where every driver knows every inch of the racing line by heart.
00:00:44And where more than 100,000 home fans will be cheering for the man and the team threatening to take
00:00:51Ferrari's titles.
00:00:52The battle to be world champion continues in first round qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, now.
00:01:23The unofficial off-season home of the Formula One fraternity, the Circuit de Catalunya,
00:01:28outside Barcelona, Spain, is the site of round five of the 2005 Formula One season.
00:01:32And we are ready for first round qualifying.
00:01:34Hi, everybody. I'm Bob Barsha.
00:01:36Steve Matchett and David Hobbs alongside.
00:01:38The big story of the weekend is the absence of the BAR Honda team,
00:01:42disqualified from the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks ago and banned from this race to the next.
00:01:46The team had a complex fuel system that basically utilized fuel as ballast.
00:01:51Here's Steve Matchett to explain further.
00:01:55Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of the BAR system for a moment,
00:01:59let's have a detailed look at how the system operated.
00:02:02After the pit stop, once the fuel had been delivered into the main fuel bladder,
00:02:05a low-pressure electronic pump transfers the fuel into an additional smaller chamber
00:02:10housed at the front of the main bladder.
00:02:12This additional chamber is referred to by the FIA as the special compartment.
00:02:18Transferred from the main tank, the fuel now pours into this special compartment.
00:02:22Note that any fuel transferred is unable to flow back into the main tank
00:02:26as each tank is isolated from the other by sealed membranes.
00:02:30Fuel is now transferred by another electronic pump into the collector,
00:02:34basically a carbon-fibre bottle designed to hold approximately 2 to 3 litres of fuel.
00:02:38The purpose of the collector is to provide a constant, stable amount of fuel
00:02:42for delivery to the engine's injection system.
00:02:45From the collector, fuel is then fed to the high-pressure engine-driven pump
00:02:49and from here to the engine's 10 fuel injectors.
00:02:52The system is designed so that the collector is oversupplied with fuel,
00:02:56the engine drawing less fuel from the collector than is being supplied to it.
00:02:59As the collector overfills, any surplus fuel drains back into the special compartment
00:03:03via this clear plastic tube.
00:03:05And the fuel housed within the main tank will continue to recycle around the system
00:03:09in this way throughout the duration of the race.
00:03:13At the end of the race, when the FIA officials asked the team to drain their tank,
00:03:17only the residual fuel housed within the main tank was able to be removed.
00:03:21At this time, the weight of the BAR remained above the 600 kilogram minimum
00:03:25as required by the regulations.
00:03:28When the officials discovered the special compartment,
00:03:30they found an additional 8.92 kilograms of fuel housed inside.
00:03:34When this fuel was removed, the weight of the car dropped below the required minimum,
00:03:39now weighing just 594.6 kilograms.
00:03:43The FIA's argument was that BAR were using this additional fuel as ballast,
00:03:47disallowed by the FIA, allowing the car to be run below the minimum weight
00:03:51during the middle stint of the race.
00:03:52Now, during the last pit stop, a generous replenishment of fuel
00:03:56would refill the special compartment with fuel
00:03:59and so return the weight of the car above 600 kilograms.
00:04:02In terms of a potential advantage, running the car just 5 kilograms under the weight limit,
00:04:07well, that could reduce lap times by as much as 2 tenths of a second.
00:04:13Great job, Steve.
00:04:14Now, we should point out in this context, and all you BAR Honda fans can sit down now,
00:04:18the team was not accused of running light,
00:04:21but they were accused of using a system that potentially would allow them to run light.
00:04:25And under Article 2.6 of the technical regulations,
00:04:28it's up to the competitor to prove his car is legal by physical inspection.
00:04:33Don't bring out reams of data.
00:04:34Show me that the car is legal.
00:04:36And that BAR Honda failed to do.
00:04:40Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship
00:04:44is brought to you by Acura,
00:04:46and by new Mobile One Extended Performance,
00:04:48the oil that's changing oil.
00:04:56And welcome back to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying,
00:04:59first-round qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.
00:05:03I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:05:05Now, despite the fact that most of the Formula One teams have spent thousands of miles testing at this circuit,
00:05:11they are still faced with a very common problem prior to qualifying,
00:05:15making the right tire choice.
00:05:17And on a track that can absolutely destroy tires despite new resurfacing in the off-season,
00:05:22the race can be won or lost even before the cars go to the grid.
00:05:25Here's Peter Windsor with more.
00:05:29That's right, guys.
00:05:30Barcelona, one of the most technical circuits on the calendar,
00:05:33and thus very difficult for the teams to make that all-important tire choice for qualifying and thus for the
00:05:38race.
00:05:39Fast corners here, placing enormous emphasis on the performance of the left front tire.
00:05:43Traction places too, so the rear tires take a punishing.
00:05:46Barcelona is also one of those circuits, like Indianapolis.
00:05:49It seems to change every ten minutes or so.
00:05:53Every ten minutes the track is different, and it's a really difficult decision to be made,
00:06:00and especially with the tires, and even though we test here quite a lot during the winter,
00:06:05but it's still different, you know, the temperature is a lot hotter now than when we were testing here.
00:06:11It's a difficult one for sure, but it's the same for everybody.
00:06:16Well, this circuit has changed a lot because of the new tarmac,
00:06:19and it's very smooth, and it's a micro-tarmac now,
00:06:22which induces a lot of heat into the tire, therefore a lot of wear,
00:06:25so it's going to be a tough one for the tires.
00:06:28I'd be surprised.
00:06:30I'm sure there are some issues on tires on Sunday afternoon.
00:06:36Obviously, what you want to do in the race defines how you're going to set the car up for qualifying,
00:06:40but it looks like the battle of the left fronts here between Bridgestone and Michelin,
00:06:44very hard circuit on tires.
00:06:46Yeah, actually, with the new surface, it becomes much more smooth,
00:06:52and actually now we use much more softer tires than we used to have in the past
00:07:01because it was so abrasive.
00:07:03But it's true, as you said, I mean, we use a lot of the front-left tires,
00:07:07and it can be a problem for the race.
00:07:11Here, traditionally, you'd be looking at controlling the wear
00:07:14and having a tire that's quick enough in qualifying.
00:07:18Now, it's very different.
00:07:20You're looking at warm-up of the tire, track temperature.
00:07:24There's still a high risk of blistering here,
00:07:26and if people blister, they'll struggle in the last half of the race.
00:07:29It may clean up at the end.
00:07:30There's actually a lot of unknowns still here,
00:07:32so I think probably for us it's more of a question mark,
00:07:36despite the fact we've tested here where we hadn't at any of the other circuits.
00:07:39There's probably more unknowns here than there were at the first four races.
00:07:46And there you see above the huge grandstand that seats nearly 10,000 people
00:07:51on the start-finish straightaway.
00:07:55Olympics are very much in the air.
00:07:56This, of course, was the home of the Olympic Games in 1992.
00:08:01There's Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:08:03He'll be the first man on track.
00:08:04While we have a moment, let's check out the Porsche track map with David Hobbs.
00:08:09Well, there you see the track, and as Peter said at the beginning,
00:08:12it's a very technical track.
00:08:13200 miles an hour into that Elf turn at the bottom of the map there.
00:08:17Obviously, a good opportunity to overtake.
00:08:19Then that Renault, that long, long right-hander,
00:08:21that's where your left front's going to take a real pounding,
00:08:23as it is through Repsol.
00:08:24Then down the hill to Seat, which is a downhill corner.
00:08:27The road falls away all the way.
00:08:28It's difficult to get the car to grip at the front end through there.
00:08:31Then at work, a lot of people have gone off the road.
00:08:34Here, they put their wheels right on the curb on the right.
00:08:37That campus is a quick flick to the right, down to Pocasia.
00:08:41And then those last two corners, New Holland, are very, very quick.
00:08:45And, of course, it's amazing to hear Gascoigne say there's so many unknowns
00:08:48where they say this is the track they test all the time.
00:08:52There's a look at the running order.
00:08:54And the real unknown in all of that was the resurfacing,
00:08:57as we talked about during practice yesterday.
00:08:59When the teams came out here with their new generation Formula 1 tires,
00:09:03they were caught completely out.
00:09:05I mean, lap time's 20 seconds off.
00:09:07Some teams packed up and went home.
00:09:09They just couldn't seem to get the tires to work.
00:09:11The Bridgestone and Michelin have both worked very hard
00:09:14to get a competitive tire on track.
00:09:16And the times are coming down.
00:09:18It's very smooth now, the track.
00:09:20It used to be pretty ripped.
00:09:21There were a couple of places where you had a lot of washboard going to corners.
00:09:23So now they can run the cars a bit lower,
00:09:25and they hope to get more grip.
00:09:26But, of course, all that puts more heat in the tires.
00:09:31Big crowd on hand for first-round qualifying.
00:09:34As mentioned, Juan Pablo Montoya and his return to Formula 1
00:09:37after a two-race absence will be the first man on track.
00:09:40We'll be back to see what he can do.
00:09:46Welcome back to Barcelona, Spain.
00:09:48And there is one Pablo Montoya in the McLaren Mercedes.
00:09:52Absent from the last round of the championship at Imola
00:09:54and the race before that in Bahrain.
00:09:57So he will be the first man on track.
00:10:00Peter Windsor caught up to him earlier
00:10:01and ask him how he felt about being the first man out today.
00:10:09You come back, obviously, a victim of the 2005 qualifying regulations,
00:10:14having to go out early on Saturday afternoon.
00:10:16Your thoughts about that rule, and it is affecting Kimi, of course.
00:10:18Great race at Imola.
00:10:19But here he is, having to go back to square one in Barcelona
00:10:21with quite a major disadvantage.
00:10:23Yeah, but I think it's better here than in Monaco, isn't it?
00:10:27I don't know. You tell me.
00:10:29Yeah, it is.
00:10:29You know, Monaco is a track where it always gets faster.
00:10:31You know, this is probably at least affecting track, hopefully it is.
00:10:35You know, what it is is what it is.
00:10:36You know, we might be lucky.
00:10:37You know, nobody was expecting this rain today.
00:10:39It might go out first, you know, first and third tomorrow,
00:10:41and then it pisses down with rain.
00:10:42Thank you very much.
00:10:43As in Melbourne.
00:10:43There you go.
00:10:44You know, anything can happen.
00:10:46Good to have you back, Juan. Thank you.
00:10:50And here is the man coming down the hill from the turn
00:10:53where he had a massive accident to wrap up Friday practice here at Barcelona.
00:10:59Let's have another look at him going off at about 140 to 150 miles an hour,
00:11:04backing it into the tire wall and basically tearing the rear end off the car.
00:11:08This was at that camp, so that right-hand flick,
00:11:10sort of right about halfway through the lap,
00:11:13an uphill approach to it.
00:11:14And that new Holland has just gone around there.
00:11:16That's a real blind.
00:11:18And of course, you want to get really good speed through there
00:11:20to maintain it all the way down here.
00:11:22They were able to take the engine out of that wreck
00:11:25and fix the chassis.
00:11:27So he is running with the same engine.
00:11:29No engine change, no 10 grid spot penalty for Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:11:33But they are a bit concerned because in the wreck,
00:11:35it broke exhaust pipes and the radiators,
00:11:37and they're just wondering if they're doing internal damage.
00:11:40I'll tell you, the fact that McLaren have been able to reuse that chassis
00:11:44just testament to how strong these survival cells are now in the monocard.
00:11:49I mean, it was a big, big shot.
00:11:50Oh, four corners off the car, rear wing and everything.
00:11:53Now, this is where his trouble started.
00:11:55This is Vert.
00:11:56Go through here.
00:11:57They very up for one ride there like he did then.
00:12:00Just at the top of the hill here.
00:12:01This is where he went off yesterday, this right-hand sweep.
00:12:05He's certainly using all the road and a bit more this afternoon.
00:12:09Juan Pablo Montoya was a bit of a revelation in qualifying
00:12:12when he came to Formula One with the Williams team a few seasons ago.
00:12:15Always a threat for pole position.
00:12:17It's hard to believe it's been almost two years since he last scored a pole.
00:12:24He's those last two really, really, really fast right-handled.
00:12:29As I was saying in the practice show yesterday,
00:12:30you need to get a good slingshot out of that.
00:12:33Well, there's always going to be provision of 115.
00:12:37Oh, 115.902.
00:12:39Well, that's what the teams have been doing,
00:12:40and, you know, it would be so tempting for the engineers to take wing off
00:12:44to really maximize the straight-line speed going down there,
00:12:48and it's something we saw Minardi doing in practice yesterday,
00:12:50but you can't get a quick time by doing that.
00:12:53You have to run a lot of downforce on the car
00:12:55to get the car to stick through New Holland
00:12:59and onto that exit for the start of the track right here.
00:13:02That time of Montoya is a 15.9.
00:13:05I mean, that is, he did a 14.4 this morning,
00:13:08but the track temperature has gone up significantly since then,
00:13:11which goes back to what Ralph Schumacher was saying
00:13:13and Pozzoni there.
00:13:15The track changes here every 10 minutes,
00:13:17which is obviously a bit of an exaggeration,
00:13:18but it does change a lot as the temperature goes up.
00:13:21And as you can see from that sunshine,
00:13:23obviously the sun full on that track,
00:13:25the temperature going up a lot.
00:13:26Something that catches the teams out in testing,
00:13:29exactly what you described, David.
00:13:30You can set the car up to get a performance,
00:13:33to get a lap time out of it in the morning.
00:13:34You try and replicate that at 12 o'clock midday,
00:13:375 o'clock in the afternoon,
00:13:38you just can't get the car to react the same.
00:13:41Here is Giancarlo Fisichella in the Renault,
00:13:44hoping to break a string of three straight DNFs
00:13:47after winning the season opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
00:13:51It's a nice shot at the back of the Renault chassis,
00:13:53sitting down,
00:13:54and a lot of roll put into the back of the car
00:13:56to give the car traction,
00:13:57better traction out of these low-speed corners,
00:13:59quickest in the second section by 0.129.
00:14:03Listen to the crowd going berserk already.
00:14:06This is not their man, Alonso.
00:14:07He'll be driving the second one of these cars
00:14:09because he'll be going out last
00:14:11as the winner of the race two weeks ago.
00:14:15To the line comes the Italian
00:14:17and moves into provisional pole position.
00:14:20Three-tenths of a second,
00:14:22quicker than Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:14:24We'll take a break and return for the next man,
00:14:26Patrick Frisacker of Austria.
00:14:29He is the provisional pole sitter.
00:14:31Here comes Patrick Frisacker of Austria in the Minardi.
00:14:37198.4 miles an hour
00:14:38through Frisacker through the speed trap.
00:14:42If you're not used to Formula One,
00:14:46qualifying is an aggregated
00:14:48and sometimes aggravating process.
00:14:50Two runs, one on Saturday on light fuel.
00:14:53That's what we're watching now.
00:14:54Tomorrow, race morning,
00:14:56they will go with their race fuel and tires.
00:14:59And it is the accumulated time
00:15:01over those two laps
00:15:02that determines your grid position.
00:15:04So today's lap is important.
00:15:05Oh, just look at the effort
00:15:06poor old Patrick Frisacker
00:15:08is having to put in
00:15:08to getting his car around.
00:15:09This is that campus return
00:15:10that caught Montoya out yesterday.
00:15:13I mean, a tremendous amount
00:15:13of steering input going there.
00:15:15Steve just said,
00:15:15198 miles an hour down the straight,
00:15:17very quick down the straight.
00:15:19The problem there is
00:15:19they've got no downforce
00:15:20hardly on this car.
00:15:21And that's why he's struggling.
00:15:23Well, one of the reasons
00:15:23why they're struggling so much
00:15:25now through the infield section,
00:15:26through those winding corners
00:15:27as they take the downforce
00:15:29off the car.
00:15:30I mean, of course,
00:15:31the handling characteristics
00:15:32of the Minardi chassis
00:15:33are nowhere near as good
00:15:34as the Ferrari,
00:15:35the Renault or the McLaren,
00:15:38of course.
00:15:39But one of the reasons
00:15:39is they're just running
00:15:40very little wing on the car.
00:15:44There you see the number.
00:15:45Four seconds off
00:15:46is not bad for Minardi,
00:15:47actually.
00:15:49I mean, it sounds like a lot,
00:15:50but what Shakespeare called
00:15:52damning by faint praise,
00:15:53I think.
00:15:56And now here comes
00:15:57Kimi Räikkönen.
00:15:59Take another look at
00:16:01poor Patrick.
00:16:04Here comes Räikkönen,
00:16:06pole sitter two weeks ago
00:16:07at Imola
00:16:07for the San Marino Grand Prix.
00:16:11Pole sitter,
00:16:12and, of course,
00:16:12rocking it off into a lead.
00:16:14Had over a three-second lead
00:16:15at one stage.
00:16:17But now you look at the input
00:16:19from Kimi Räikkönen.
00:16:21Whoa!
00:16:24They have gotten
00:16:25both rear wheels off there.
00:16:28Räikkönen got out of his car
00:16:29at Imola
00:16:30and threw his
00:16:32very expensive
00:16:33and high-tech steering wheel
00:16:34across the garage.
00:16:35He was absolutely furious
00:16:38that he had to drop out
00:16:40in a car that he thought
00:16:41had the potential to win.
00:16:42Well, of course,
00:16:42he had about a three-second lead,
00:16:44I was just saying,
00:16:44and the car broke
00:16:46very early on.
00:16:47We all thought
00:16:47he was very light on fuel,
00:16:48but McLaren team director
00:16:50Ron Dennis insisted
00:16:51that he was going to pit
00:16:52after all the other
00:16:53frontrunners.
00:16:55Which is pretty ominous
00:16:56if it was true.
00:16:57Yeah.
00:16:58Kimi Räikkönen,
00:16:59three and a half miles an hour
00:17:00slower through the speed trap
00:17:02than the Minardi.
00:17:03Look at that second sector.
00:17:04He's gotten back
00:17:05ahead of the leader's pace.
00:17:08If he hadn't made
00:17:09that mistake
00:17:10in that first sector
00:17:10by putting that wheel
00:17:11off the edge,
00:17:12he'd be well ahead.
00:17:12He's still pretty much
00:17:13ahead now.
00:17:15That, I suppose,
00:17:15is the beauty
00:17:16of the two-step
00:17:17Formula One
00:17:18qualifying process.
00:17:19You have a chance
00:17:19to make up for it.
00:17:21And the fin
00:17:22into the 14s.
00:17:24You know,
00:17:25that's exactly
00:17:25what we're talking about,
00:17:26about getting that launch,
00:17:28getting that slingshot
00:17:30out of New Holland.
00:17:30The car just worked
00:17:31wonderfully.
00:17:33Here's the mistake.
00:17:38I'm guessing.
00:17:39Perhaps not.
00:17:40Now,
00:17:40different part of the racetrack.
00:17:42Why would we want to show
00:17:43the critical point
00:17:44on the track?
00:17:46Now,
00:17:46Rubens Barrichello,
00:17:48his car,
00:17:49the F2005,
00:17:50has a new engine installed.
00:17:52They changed the engine
00:17:53because of that
00:17:54hydraulic problem
00:17:55that we were talking about
00:17:56in the practice show
00:17:56yesterday.
00:17:57So he will have to take
00:17:59a 10-spot hit
00:18:01at the end
00:18:01of the qualifying
00:18:02on Sunday.
00:18:04I tell you what,
00:18:06just nothing
00:18:07is going right
00:18:08for this man.
00:18:09The team itself
00:18:09is having a pretty
00:18:11lacklusty year,
00:18:12except for, of course,
00:18:12Michael's incredible drive
00:18:13two weeks ago.
00:18:14But,
00:18:15poor old Barrichello
00:18:16just can't get
00:18:18everything away
00:18:19for bad luck this year.
00:18:20Everything's gone wrong
00:18:21for him.
00:18:21That's a shame.
00:18:22One of the most
00:18:22likeable guys
00:18:23in the pit lane.
00:18:25Wow,
00:18:26look at that first time.
00:18:30He's certainly
00:18:30going to need it
00:18:31because if he ends up
00:18:32on the front row,
00:18:33obviously he's going to
00:18:34still end up
00:18:34in the middle of the pack
00:18:35coming down to that
00:18:36Lth corner
00:18:36for that first lap.
00:18:38It's pretty
00:18:39air-raising here
00:18:40because it's a long way
00:18:41from the start-finish line.
00:18:42So on your first lap,
00:18:44oh,
00:18:44whoo,
00:18:45that's at vert
00:18:46where everybody
00:18:47goes off to the right there.
00:18:48This is that right flick.
00:18:50Wow,
00:18:50looking pretty steady
00:18:51through there.
00:18:52Very steady,
00:18:53in fact.
00:18:54Come to the second sector.
00:18:56lost time.
00:18:57Obviously a bit too steady.
00:19:11Down to New Holland.
00:19:14Great corner.
00:19:19In the third
00:19:19goes the Ferrari.
00:19:22Boy,
00:19:22nearly a second
00:19:23slower than Räikkönen.
00:19:24Over nine-tenths
00:19:25of a second slower.
00:19:26You're on to
00:19:26John Todd looking on.
00:19:28He lost a lot of it
00:19:29in the second sector.
00:19:31Really from Repsol
00:19:32round to the,
00:19:33down to Nissan
00:19:34and through to La Caccia,
00:19:35which is quite a winding
00:19:37part of the track.
00:19:39The cars are
00:19:40distinctly slower
00:19:41today
00:19:41than they have
00:19:42been in practice.
00:19:43And remembering
00:19:44that this first
00:19:45qualifying session
00:19:45is conducted
00:19:46on low fuel,
00:19:47I mean,
00:19:47absolute minimum
00:19:48fuel in the car.
00:19:50I wonder whether
00:19:51or not these guys
00:19:51are running
00:19:52significantly more wing
00:19:53than yesterday.
00:19:55I was wondering
00:19:56whether or not
00:19:56they're anticipating
00:19:57rain to arrive
00:19:58on Sunday
00:19:58because they set
00:19:59the cars now.
00:20:00They're not able
00:20:01to change the wing
00:20:01specification
00:20:02until the race.
00:20:03But,
00:20:03you know,
00:20:04I understand
00:20:05that they're not
00:20:06expecting rain tomorrow,
00:20:07but maybe the team
00:20:07is there something
00:20:08we don't.
00:20:09Sure as heck
00:20:09doesn't look like
00:20:10rain right at the moment,
00:20:11but of course,
00:20:12obviously up here
00:20:13right in the north
00:20:14east corner of Spain,
00:20:16the weather is
00:20:17something to change,
00:20:17a lot of hills,
00:20:18a lot of mountains,
00:20:19and of course
00:20:19the Mediterranean
00:20:20just off to our east.
00:20:21It is,
00:20:21it's right on the coast
00:20:22and the weather
00:20:23can change very quickly,
00:20:24but we'll see
00:20:26the temperature figures
00:20:28in Celsius.
00:20:29You can do the math,
00:20:30multiply by nine,
00:20:31divide by five,
00:20:31add 32.
00:20:33I'll leave it to you.
00:20:36Let's a look
00:20:36at Juan Pablo Montoya,
00:20:38currently fourth
00:20:39in the provisional running.
00:20:41After each five drivers,
00:20:43we take double
00:20:44the normal break.
00:20:45Instead of 60 seconds
00:20:46between cars,
00:20:47we get two.
00:20:48We'll take a quick break,
00:20:49two minutes that is,
00:20:51and be back.
00:20:52Next man on track
00:20:53will be Christian Albers,
00:20:54who's had an eventful
00:20:55weekend in the Minardi
00:20:56thus far.
00:20:57Stand by for more
00:20:58qualifying from Spain.
00:21:16Welcome back.
00:21:17First round qualifying
00:21:18for the Spanish
00:21:19Formula One Grand Prix.
00:21:20There's one Pablo Montoya,
00:21:22who gave McLaren
00:21:23his best effort.
00:21:24He's currently fourth
00:21:25on the provisional grid,
00:21:27as Christian Albers
00:21:28brings the Minardi
00:21:29up to speed.
00:21:31The new 2005
00:21:33specification Minardi,
00:21:34the PS05.
00:21:36He has for full
00:21:37Stoddard, of course.
00:21:38Of course,
00:21:39the one thing
00:21:39that we haven't
00:21:40mentioned yet,
00:21:41I don't believe,
00:21:41is, of course,
00:21:43the tyre war.
00:21:44And on Bridgestone,
00:21:46really,
00:21:46there are only
00:21:47two or three cars.
00:21:48The Ferrari,
00:21:49obviously,
00:21:49is the main one.
00:21:50These guys,
00:21:51Minardi,
00:21:51are on Bridgestone,
00:21:53and, of course,
00:21:53the Jordans
00:21:54are on Bridgestone.
00:21:56They seem to have had
00:21:57the most lacklustre
00:21:58performance so far
00:21:59this year,
00:22:00until, of course,
00:22:01we got to Imola
00:22:02last week,
00:22:02when the Ferrari
00:22:03of Michael Schumacher
00:22:04looked very fast,
00:22:05and, in fact,
00:22:06turned the fastest
00:22:06lap of the race
00:22:07by a long way,
00:22:08but it was extremely
00:22:10cool at Imola,
00:22:12unseasonably so.
00:22:14Obviously,
00:22:14we have a different
00:22:15circumstance today,
00:22:15a lot, lot hotter.
00:22:17And again,
00:22:17Albers set in the
00:22:18fastest speed track
00:22:20time of the day,
00:22:20just shy of 200 miles an hour,
00:22:23faster than Barrichello
00:22:25and Kimi Räikkönen.
00:22:26His teammate,
00:22:27Freizak,
00:22:28198,
00:22:28but Albers,
00:22:29there he is again.
00:22:31Glistering straight line
00:22:32performance,
00:22:33but that is the penalty
00:22:34you pay for it.
00:22:35You can see the car
00:22:36is very,
00:22:36very twitchy
00:22:38in the way he reacted there.
00:22:42Doesn't seem to be
00:22:42soaring away at the wheel
00:22:43quite as much
00:22:44as his teammate.
00:22:48Christian Albers
00:22:49had a big off yesterday.
00:22:51He's ahead of his
00:22:52teammate's pace.
00:22:57This is a Cosworth
00:22:58powered chassis.
00:23:00And a very handy
00:23:01Cosworth engine
00:23:02in the back of that thing,
00:23:03the TJ 2005,
00:23:05a 60 brake horsepower
00:23:07improvement over what
00:23:08they were running
00:23:08last year.
00:23:1219.563
00:23:13for the Dutchman.
00:23:14Almost a full second
00:23:16ahead of his
00:23:16teammate's pace.
00:23:17His team will be
00:23:18Cosworth powered again
00:23:19next year.
00:23:20It was announced
00:23:21in the break between
00:23:21the San Marino race
00:23:22and this one.
00:23:27Ferrer is good.
00:23:28Ferrer helps.
00:23:30But horsepower
00:23:30is better.
00:23:31I tell you what,
00:23:32four seconds off again
00:23:33from Minardi.
00:23:34It didn't seem to be
00:23:35too bad to me.
00:23:38Here comes
00:23:38Thiago Montero
00:23:39of Portugal.
00:23:40For him,
00:23:41this is as close
00:23:42to a home race
00:23:42as you get
00:23:43in Formula One.
00:23:46At least it's on
00:23:47the Iberian Peninsula.
00:23:52another team
00:23:53with downforce
00:23:54and balance issues.
00:23:55Jordan.
00:23:58They have a new
00:24:00car or new-ish
00:24:01car coming
00:24:02in July,
00:24:03I believe.
00:24:04Obviously,
00:24:05this year
00:24:05they've got
00:24:05some horsepower
00:24:06and reliable
00:24:07horsepower
00:24:08like that
00:24:08with the Toyota.
00:24:10But apparently
00:24:11it was a bit
00:24:11of a job
00:24:12to manhandle
00:24:12into that chassis,
00:24:13right, Steve?
00:24:14Well, it just,
00:24:15you know,
00:24:15it wasn't made
00:24:16for it.
00:24:16That's the problem.
00:24:17As we can all
00:24:18appreciate,
00:24:19Formula One
00:24:19machinery is
00:24:20very much
00:24:21an integration
00:24:21of chassis,
00:24:22engine,
00:24:23transmission,
00:24:23suspension.
00:24:24All those pieces
00:24:24must work
00:24:25in harmony.
00:24:26You take one
00:24:27of those components
00:24:28out and try
00:24:28and push
00:24:29something else
00:24:29in its place,
00:24:30it's always going
00:24:31to be a little
00:24:31bit of a box job.
00:24:35Weight distribution
00:24:35changes the length
00:24:36of the car,
00:24:37changes the wheelbase,
00:24:38therefore,
00:24:39on all of that
00:24:40critical to
00:24:41performance and handling.
00:24:44And into fifth place
00:24:46goes the Portuguese
00:24:47driver with a
00:24:48119-040.
00:24:51Next up will be
00:24:52his teammate,
00:24:53Noreen Karthikeyan
00:24:54of India.
00:24:55After first round
00:24:56qualifying for
00:24:57round five
00:24:58of the Formula One
00:24:58season,
00:24:59the Spanish Grand Prix
00:25:00at Barcelona.
00:25:02With Steve Matchett
00:25:03and David Hobbs,
00:25:04I'm Bob Barsha.
00:25:05This is Noreen
00:25:06Karthikeyan of India
00:25:07in the Jordan
00:25:08Toyota.
00:25:10The FIA approval
00:25:12for the steering wheel
00:25:13we're talking about
00:25:14again,
00:25:14that every component
00:25:15on the car
00:25:16has to be verified
00:25:17and presented
00:25:19to the FIA.
00:25:20That's the thing.
00:25:22The teams can come
00:25:23up with any sort
00:25:24of technical newbie
00:25:25they want,
00:25:26any sort of innovation,
00:25:26that's fine,
00:25:27but you must disclose
00:25:29it to the FIA
00:25:30and get their approval.
00:25:31And again,
00:25:32that's something
00:25:32that really ticked
00:25:33them off with B.A.R.
00:25:34But really,
00:25:36B.A.R.
00:25:36weren't really
00:25:37they were a little
00:25:38less than totally
00:25:39transparent with
00:25:40what they were
00:25:41telling the FIA.
00:25:42I think that's what
00:25:42really miffed
00:25:43Charlie Whiten
00:25:44and Chris DeGroote.
00:25:45Very well
00:25:46and diplomatically
00:25:47put, Steve,
00:25:47I add.
00:25:49Karthikeyan,
00:25:50a young Indian driver,
00:25:51the only Indian
00:25:52obviously in Formula One
00:25:53at the moment.
00:25:54Very few Indians
00:25:55do any racing,
00:25:56but Karthikeyan's
00:25:58been around now
00:25:58for a few years,
00:25:59very successful
00:26:00in Formula Three
00:26:01in Britain.
00:26:01and Trevor Carlin
00:26:02who is now
00:26:03one of the
00:26:05main men
00:26:06at the Jordan,
00:26:07the newly revamped
00:26:07Jordan team
00:26:08has a lot of faith
00:26:09in Karthikeyan
00:26:09and thinks he's
00:26:10going to go
00:26:10quite a long way.
00:26:12And quicker
00:26:13than his teammate
00:26:13as usual,
00:26:15he usually is a bit
00:26:16quicker than Montero
00:26:16who's got more
00:26:17experience in bigger
00:26:18cars than Karthikeyan.
00:26:20So,
00:26:21wow,
00:26:23not a great car
00:26:24to cut your teeth
00:26:24in the old Jordan.
00:26:25Always looked a bit
00:26:26twitchy the last
00:26:26two years.
00:26:27Yeah,
00:26:27right like that.
00:26:29Now here comes
00:26:30David Coulthard
00:26:31who has had
00:26:31lots of success
00:26:32here
00:26:34at the Circuit
00:26:35de Catalunya.
00:26:39That's a good
00:26:40qualifying
00:26:41at 97,
00:26:4198,
00:26:4299,
00:26:4301,
00:26:44second and third
00:26:45on the qualifying
00:26:46runs.
00:26:47In the middle
00:26:48of the steering wheel
00:26:48there,
00:26:49you can see
00:26:49the little track
00:26:50map that the
00:26:50drivers use
00:26:51to talk to
00:26:51their engineers.
00:26:52They should
00:26:53hopefully
00:26:54change that
00:26:55track map
00:26:55for every event.
00:26:56Boy,
00:26:56oh boy,
00:26:57he's quickest
00:26:57to the second
00:26:58of the Rikkonen.
00:27:00DC has shown
00:27:01bursts of speed
00:27:01that he was
00:27:02fifth at the
00:27:02end of Friday
00:27:03practice.
00:27:05The Red Bull
00:27:06Cosworth
00:27:07soon to become
00:27:07a Red Bull
00:27:08Ferrari
00:27:08in 2006.
00:27:10That is
00:27:11incredible turn
00:27:12of speed
00:27:12to be quick
00:27:13at the Kimi-Reich.
00:27:13Mind you,
00:27:14that's where
00:27:14Kimi-Reich
00:27:15made that mistake.
00:27:18But he had
00:27:19a fantastic
00:27:20Rikkonen
00:27:20had a fantastic
00:27:21second.
00:27:22Oh,
00:27:23is that the Jordan?
00:27:23That's Karthikeyan
00:27:24on the road
00:27:24ahead of him,
00:27:25I think.
00:27:25Boy,
00:27:25he didn't want
00:27:26to see that.
00:27:26That's for sure.
00:27:30Slower in the
00:27:31second sector.
00:27:32That's where
00:27:32Kimi was very quick
00:27:33right in the
00:27:33second sector
00:27:34two.
00:27:35It was at this
00:27:36racetrack back
00:27:36in 2000,
00:27:37the David Coulthard
00:27:38race just days
00:27:39after his chartered
00:27:41private jet
00:27:42crashed in France,
00:27:44killing both of
00:27:44its pilots.
00:27:46It was a
00:27:46remarkable story.
00:27:48And he slots
00:27:49into fourth.
00:27:51look at the
00:27:52one Pablo Montoya
00:27:53in the McLaren,
00:27:55which is a really,
00:27:56really stout effort.
00:27:57This team has been
00:27:59doing so much
00:28:00better than anybody
00:28:01thought, including
00:28:01themselves, I think.
00:28:02Oh, absolutely.
00:28:04Absolutely.
00:28:05I mean,
00:28:06the atmosphere,
00:28:07the morale at
00:28:08Jaguar last year
00:28:09was probably
00:28:10as low it could
00:28:11ever be.
00:28:11Yeah.
00:28:12And, well,
00:28:13they kept working
00:28:14and developing
00:28:14the new car,
00:28:15hoping for a buyer
00:28:16to come along.
00:28:17And, of course,
00:28:18there it is,
00:28:18you know,
00:28:18they're doing
00:28:19wonderful stuff
00:28:20with that.
00:28:21Here comes
00:28:22Felipe Massa
00:28:23in the Sauber
00:28:24Ferrari,
00:28:24or Petronas,
00:28:25a rebadged
00:28:26Ferrari V10
00:28:28that this team
00:28:29apparently will
00:28:29not run
00:28:30next year.
00:28:31And the question
00:28:31is, what will
00:28:32be behind
00:28:33the driver's backs?
00:28:35Well,
00:28:35Jean-Todd said
00:28:36if they want
00:28:36the Ferrari,
00:28:37they can have
00:28:37the Ferrari.
00:28:38But a big rumor
00:28:39obviously is
00:28:40that there won't
00:28:40be a Ferrari
00:28:41to be a BMW.
00:28:42That's right.
00:28:44Felipe Massa
00:28:45was having
00:28:45a pretty good run
00:28:46at Imola
00:28:47two weeks ago,
00:28:48kept bouncing
00:28:48off people,
00:28:49including David
00:28:49Coulthard,
00:28:50who took it
00:28:51by the throat
00:28:52after the end
00:28:52of the race
00:28:53while Massa
00:28:54was sitting
00:28:54in his car
00:28:55and was about
00:28:55to deck him
00:28:56or do something
00:28:58to the window
00:28:58of the car.
00:28:59David looked
00:29:00over Massa's
00:29:00shoulder
00:29:01and there were
00:29:01mum and dad
00:29:02sitting in the back
00:29:03so he thought
00:29:03he let him off.
00:29:09Kind of the best
00:29:09of friends
00:29:10again now.
00:29:11Good bit slower
00:29:11in that second sector
00:29:12there.
00:29:21Can't look
00:29:21at Felipe Massa
00:29:22without thinking
00:29:23that this kid
00:29:23came into the sport
00:29:25and was dismissed
00:29:26as a crasher
00:29:27early on.
00:29:28He took a season
00:29:29away,
00:29:29did some test
00:29:30driving for Ferrari.
00:29:31Now here he is,
00:29:33one of the most
00:29:33aggressive drivers
00:29:34in Formula One.
00:29:36He's quicker
00:29:37than Juan Pablo
00:29:38Montoya
00:29:39just days
00:29:40after his 24th
00:29:41birthday.
00:29:41That came on
00:29:41the Monday
00:29:42after Imola.
00:29:43It's hard to believe
00:29:44that he's still
00:29:45only 24 now
00:29:46because he's actually
00:29:46been around
00:29:47quite a long time
00:29:48now.
00:29:48That's what I'm
00:29:49getting to.
00:29:49He was about 19
00:29:50when he started.
00:29:50He had that reputation
00:29:51for crashing out
00:29:52of races.
00:29:52He's now finished
00:29:53the last nine
00:29:54in a row
00:29:54and that's the
00:29:55longest active streak
00:29:56of anyone
00:29:57in the field.
00:29:58This will be
00:29:59his 39th GP.
00:30:02Let's look at
00:30:02your top eight.
00:30:04Ten drivers
00:30:05have now attempted
00:30:05so we'll get
00:30:06a little bit
00:30:06longer break
00:30:07as Masa
00:30:08completes his
00:30:08cool down.
00:30:09But of course
00:30:09one Pablo
00:30:10Montoya
00:30:10who keeps on
00:30:11dropping through
00:30:12the field there
00:30:12don't forget
00:30:13he was the
00:30:14first guy out
00:30:14so he
00:30:15he was the
00:30:16track cleaner
00:30:17or the first
00:30:17of the track
00:30:18cleaners out
00:30:18and the track
00:30:19will get
00:30:20probably faster
00:30:21and faster
00:30:21but as the
00:30:21temperature
00:30:22goes up
00:30:22and up
00:30:22which it
00:30:23will do
00:30:23at this
00:30:23time of day
00:30:25that might
00:30:25even out
00:30:26any cleaning
00:30:26of the track.
00:30:27This track
00:30:27is notoriously
00:30:28sensitive
00:30:29to weather.
00:30:30It's wide
00:30:30open spaces
00:30:31set up on a
00:30:31hill
00:30:32so the wind
00:30:32blows
00:30:33and can
00:30:34change
00:30:34direction
00:30:34very quickly
00:30:35and as you
00:30:36can see
00:30:36it gets
00:30:37lots of
00:30:37sunshine
00:30:38and that
00:30:38affects
00:30:38track
00:30:39temperature.
00:30:41When Peter
00:30:41Windsor spoke
00:30:42with Juan Pablo
00:30:44JPM kind of
00:30:45laughed it all
00:30:45off but he
00:30:46knew the
00:30:46situation he
00:30:47was in
00:30:47and Peter
00:30:47has talked
00:30:48about this
00:30:48before
00:30:48if you
00:30:49have a
00:30:49bad race
00:30:50or you
00:30:50miss a
00:30:51race
00:30:51entirely
00:30:51it affects
00:30:52you not
00:30:52only in
00:30:53the next
00:30:53race
00:30:53but several
00:30:54to follow
00:30:54because you
00:30:55have to go
00:30:55out early
00:30:56in qualifying
00:30:56you tend
00:30:57to get a
00:30:57mid-pack
00:30:58at best
00:30:58qualifying
00:30:59position
00:30:59for the
00:31:00following
00:31:00race
00:31:00you have
00:31:01all that
00:31:01work to
00:31:02do
00:31:02and of course
00:31:02Juan Pablo's
00:31:03point there
00:31:04was he
00:31:04he'd rather
00:31:05be starting
00:31:06out first
00:31:06here than
00:31:06at Monte Carlo
00:31:07in two weeks
00:31:08time when the
00:31:08track really does
00:31:09change to qualifying
00:31:10big time
00:31:11we'll take a
00:31:11break and return
00:31:12the next car
00:31:13on track
00:31:14will be
00:31:14Ralph Schumacher
00:31:15the fastest
00:31:15man in this
00:31:16morning's final
00:31:17practice for
00:31:18Toyota
00:31:18we'll be back
00:31:24welcome back
00:31:25to the first
00:31:25of two rounds
00:31:26of qualifying
00:31:26to set the
00:31:27grid for round
00:31:27five of the
00:31:282005 Formula
00:31:29One season
00:31:30this is the
00:31:30Spanish Grand
00:31:31Prix from
00:31:31Barcelona
00:31:32on the hillside
00:31:33you see patches
00:31:34of sky blue
00:31:35Carolina blue
00:31:36if you will
00:31:37it's actually
00:31:38the color
00:31:38of the
00:31:39Asturias
00:31:39region of
00:31:40Spain
00:31:40from which
00:31:41Spanish
00:31:41national hero
00:31:42Fernando Alonso
00:31:43hails
00:31:44this is Ralph
00:31:46Schumacher
00:31:46coming in
00:31:47off a 25
00:31:47second penalty
00:31:48for dangerous
00:31:49driving in
00:31:50the pit lane
00:31:50at the
00:31:50San Marino
00:31:51Grand Prix
00:31:51two weeks
00:31:52ago
00:31:52he was
00:31:53released by
00:31:53the team
00:31:54into the
00:31:54lane
00:31:54just ahead
00:31:55of the
00:31:55oncoming
00:31:56Williams
00:31:56of Nick
00:31:57Heidfeld
00:31:58who had
00:31:59to break
00:31:59hard to
00:31:59avoid the
00:32:00Toyota
00:32:00so that
00:32:0125 second
00:32:01penalty
00:32:03dropped
00:32:03Schumacher
00:32:04back to
00:32:0411th
00:32:05in the
00:32:06final results
00:32:08I'm not
00:32:09sure about
00:32:09that penalty
00:32:10you know
00:32:10because
00:32:11I don't
00:32:11know whether
00:32:12or not
00:32:12it's correct
00:32:12that the
00:32:13driver should
00:32:13be penalized
00:32:14for that
00:32:14in the pit
00:32:15stops
00:32:15the driver
00:32:16is watching
00:32:16the chief
00:32:17mechanic
00:32:17with the
00:32:17brakes on
00:32:18board
00:32:19and the
00:32:19split second
00:32:20that lollipop
00:32:21is removed
00:32:21the driver
00:32:22will go
00:32:23that's the
00:32:24signal for
00:32:24the drivers
00:32:25the chief
00:32:25mechanic
00:32:26really who
00:32:26should be
00:32:27looking down
00:32:27the pit lane
00:32:28that's part
00:32:28of his job
00:32:29is to check
00:32:29that it is
00:32:30safe to
00:32:30release the
00:32:31driver
00:32:32in my eye
00:32:33I would want
00:32:34to find the
00:32:34team for
00:32:35that
00:32:35I don't
00:32:35think the
00:32:35driver
00:32:36when he's
00:32:36in the
00:32:36pit lane
00:32:37he's under
00:32:37the control
00:32:38of the
00:32:38team
00:32:38on the
00:32:38track
00:32:39it's a
00:32:39different
00:32:39matter
00:32:39well he
00:32:40was fastest
00:32:41this morning
00:32:41and he's
00:32:42fastest in
00:32:42that first
00:32:43sector
00:32:43again
00:32:44obviously got
00:32:45a lot to
00:32:45prove it
00:32:45well Ralphie
00:32:46because his
00:32:47teammate
00:32:47Jano
00:32:47Trulli
00:32:48his average
00:32:49grid position
00:32:49this year
00:32:50has been
00:32:50third
00:32:50Ralph's
00:32:51has been
00:32:51ninth
00:32:52but he's
00:32:53been quicker
00:32:53than Trulli
00:32:54this weekend
00:32:58but that
00:32:59steering input
00:32:59in that
00:33:00car
00:33:00compared to
00:33:00what we
00:33:01saw on
00:33:02board
00:33:02the
00:33:02Minardi
00:33:02looks like
00:33:03a very
00:33:04small
00:33:04wheel
00:33:04that
00:33:05Ralph
00:33:05has
00:33:05too
00:33:07Ralph
00:33:08Schumacher
00:33:08says
00:33:08privately
00:33:09that

00:33:11former

00:33:11was
00:33:12that

00:33:16as well
00:33:17as some
00:33:17other
00:33:17teams
00:33:18notably
00:33:18the

00:33:19who

00:33:23of the

00:33:23this
00:33:24looks like
00:33:24he could
00:33:25be

00:33:25Paul
00:33:26we keep
00:33:27saying
00:33:27provisional

00:33:28course
00:33:28we've got

00:33:31oh
00:33:31wow
00:33:34I thought
00:33:34that was

00:42:50Welcome back to qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs.
00:42:54I'm Bob Varsha.
00:42:54I must correct myself.
00:42:56Going to break, I said we'll have the top three from the last race at Imola.
00:42:59That would have been Jenson Button who made the podium in that race.
00:43:03But Button and his BAR Honda teammate Takuma Sato have been banned from this race.
00:43:08So we have Jacques Villeneuve, the 97 world champion.
00:43:12In fact, the Canadian clinched that championship here in Spain at the Jerez circuit down on the Mediterranean.
00:43:21The Canadian is on the clock in the Sauber Petronas.
00:43:25Obviously, the big thought in his mind and his team is can he beat his teammate, let alone anybody else.
00:43:32Down to that first corner.
00:43:34Into that Renault, this long, long right hander just puts a massive amount of heat into both left tires.
00:43:41Just a nap slower for the speed trap.
00:43:45Villeneuve made headlines in the motoring press a few weeks ago when the Sauber team came here to test for
00:43:50three days.
00:43:52Villeneuve very slow on the first day.
00:43:55His teammate, Felipe Massa, was supposed to test on the third day.
00:43:58The weather forecast was iffy.
00:44:00They called Massa in to take over on the second day, which got right up Villeneuve's nose.
00:44:05He stomped out of the racetrack, and everybody thought that might be the end for his Sauber career.
00:44:11But he hung in there.
00:44:12He's been working with the engineers.
00:44:14They have new traction control.
00:44:15But it's a lot slower than his teammates so far.
00:44:17He was slower in the first sector, and I think he's slower in his second sector.
00:44:20I was building up to that.
00:44:22After a good race at Imola.
00:44:25You bring up a good point there, Bobby.
00:44:27Everyone I talk to that has worked with Villeneuve in Formula 1, they all say, you know, he doesn't go
00:44:33out of his way to gel with the team.
00:44:35He gets in the car, he drives, he gets out of the car and leaves.
00:44:38And there's very little sort of interaction with the team.
00:44:42And perhaps he's started to change now a little bit at Sauber and react, inter-react, I should say, with
00:44:47his engineers to get the car working for him.
00:44:50But he's nearly a second slower than his teammate, and of course, as you say, if you don't work with
00:44:55the team and for the team, it's hard to be a team player.
00:44:59Well, his old engineer at BAR is available.
00:45:04Jacques Clear has nothing to do this weekend.
00:45:09Here we go.
00:45:10The world champion, Michael Schumacher, who had that incredible performance two weeks ago at Imola, coming from 13th on the
00:45:17grid,
00:45:17and absolutely hounding race leader, Fernando Alonso, for the last 12 laps of that race.
00:45:23Well, the car was obviously fantastic at Imola.
00:45:27As for the tires, of course.
00:45:28They have new tires for this race.
00:45:31They have new front compound and constructions from Bridgestone have made just for this track.
00:45:36The construction of the rear tires that Bridgestone produced exactly the same as it was used at Imola,
00:45:42although the compound overall slightly harder.
00:45:44But there it is. We're already beginning to see. I'm expecting big things out of this car.
00:45:48Remember, Rory Byrne, fantastic aerodynamics.
00:45:51The mechanics on the car are working very well.
00:45:54And if Bridgestone have got that compound right for the front tires, I think we're going to be looking at
00:45:58a fine shape.
00:45:59He's there going to that Seat downhill, using all the road at Vert, and a bit more, they've added up
00:46:03for him.
00:46:05That's that Kamsa right-hand sweep.
00:46:07Still chasing the late Ayrton Senna for the all-time lead in Formula One poles.
00:46:12Oh, slower in that second sector.
00:46:19This last sector is where the Ferrari sometimes shines.
00:46:22These very fast corners are great for Michael Schumacher.
00:46:25They're great for the aerodynamics on these Ferraris.
00:46:28Can he do it again?
00:46:29Yeah, last corner.
00:46:39That is amazing.
00:46:41Wow, I didn't expect that.
00:46:44Right there with his teammate, a tenth quicker than Rubens Botticello's performance.
00:46:48Now, look at all that blue in the grandstand.
00:46:50You see the blue flags with the yellow crosses.
00:46:53It's known as the flag of victory.
00:46:56And they're waving it for Fernando Alonso.
00:46:58Now, is that, in fact, going to be down to tire choice, do you think, on the Ferraris Brookstones?
00:47:03Have they gone on compound?
00:47:04Listen to the crowd.
00:47:08Well, his teammate, Mr. Siquella, is in sixth.
00:47:12At no time has Alonso been on the top of the timesheets this weekend, I don't think.
00:47:16But, the Mcgown looking very strong.
00:47:19And of course, Jano Trum sits round.
00:47:23Slightly off the pace in the first sector.
00:47:2622-4, oh, well, yeah, it is only slightly off.
00:47:32It would be awesome if Alonso could put it on provisional pole today, I tell you.
00:47:38This house is going to absolutely rock on Sunday.
00:47:42Spain has never had a Formula One Grand Prix driver of note.
00:47:48Until now.
00:47:49The fourth, oh, look for it now, middle of that handling sector again.
00:47:53And listen to the crowd react to that.
00:47:56Now, we know the car works well.
00:47:58We know the car works well.
00:47:59They've got horsepower too.
00:48:01And Alonso is just brilliant behind the wheel.
00:48:04He couldn't do it.
00:48:05He couldn't do it.
00:48:06This is going to be Nipita.
00:48:08Oh, usually not.
00:48:09Come on, come on, come on.
00:48:11Oh, sack.
00:48:14Oh.
00:48:17Priya Tori pretty happy with that.
00:48:20So are they.
00:48:21It's a start, but not him.
00:48:23It's a start.
00:48:24He will be the second to last man on track in Sunday's final round of qualifying.
00:48:34So, again, Toyota looking very strong.
00:48:39Yano truly on provisional pole so far.
00:48:41Then Alonso, the Renault.
00:48:42Then Kibi Räikkönen and McCann.
00:48:44And Ralph Schumacher in the second of the Toyotas.
00:48:46So we've got a real mixture at the top of the field here.
00:48:48Looking very, very promising.
00:48:50And Nick Heidfeld fifth in the first of the Williams BMWs.
00:48:54Michael Schumacher down in seventh.
00:48:57Rubens Barrichello in ninth.
00:48:59And Barrichello will have to take a ten-spot hit because of that engine change.
00:49:04As will Nick Heidfeld.
00:49:06But fantastic job for Toyota right there.
00:49:09The question now is how will the car react on fuel tomorrow for final qualifying?
00:49:14Remember, they've put their race fuel in now for the first stint of the race.
00:49:19The Renault works very well with fuel in.
00:49:22I have to say, he could still do it.
00:49:24Look at that gap.
00:49:25Sixteen thousandths of a second from Trulli to Alonso.
00:49:31And look at Kibi Räikkönen right there.
00:49:33He's only 24,000.
00:49:34Seventy-five thousandths for Ralph Schumacher.
00:49:37Yep.
00:49:37And two tenths for Nick Heidfeld, who Steve already said's got a ten-spot penalty, unfortunately.
00:49:43So it'll be a great four-way battle for Pohl.
00:49:46Michael Schumacher, only six tenths off.
00:49:49But of course, six tenths over 66 laps is a long way.
00:49:55Well, it's all going to be about protecting the tires, as Mike Gascoigne was saying.
00:49:59And it could well be that Michael Schumacher has opted for the harder of the two compounds that Bridgestone have
00:50:04bought.
00:50:04And perhaps in the later stage of the race, I mean, look at the situation with Ferrari and Imler.
00:50:09They, they, the drive from 13th to 2nd from Michael on those tires at Imler was quite, quite remarkable.
00:50:17And I still think there's more performance to come from that car here than we haven't seen yet.
00:50:21But the problem with that coming through the field is, of course, you can come through the field,
00:50:25but then getting around these top guys is so, so difficult.
00:50:30Look at that huge crowd and the best crowd they've ever had at this Spanish race.
00:50:34And it's all because of this guy here.
00:50:38Alonso.
00:50:39An absolute brilliant driver.
00:50:42And still very, very young.
00:50:46Alonso still only 23 years old.
00:50:4923 and so calm and controlled.
00:50:52When you hear him in the press rooms talking, you know,
00:50:54and he was fending off seven times world champion Michael Schumacher and Ferrari
00:50:58being able to control the pace of that race.
00:51:00So calm.
00:51:01He said he had no intention of just looking after the points.
00:51:04He wanted that race with an Imler.
00:51:06Boy, did he get it.
00:51:06He's always been that way.
00:51:08He says he felt more pressure driving go-karts that he has in his Formula One career.
00:51:12Of course, I'm not sure he could ever have dreamed that he would have the Formula One career
00:51:16that he's having now with Renault.
00:51:18The winner of three straight races coming in.
00:51:22Truly, Alonso, Raikkonen, and Schumacher will battle for pole on Sunday with the race to follow.
00:51:28We'll be back to Spain.
00:51:31Welcome back to the circuit of Catalonia.
00:51:33There you see the flags of Asturias, the native region of Fernando Alonso,
00:51:38who was second quickest in today's opening round of qualifying for his home Grand Prix.
00:51:43You can be sure this racetrack will be packed to capacity when Alonso takes to the track on Sunday.
00:51:49Let's go to Peter Windsor with the top three.
00:51:51After the first qualifying session for the Marlborough Spanish Grand Prix, congratulations to the quickest three drivers.
00:51:58Third fastest for West McLaren Mercedes, Kimi Raikkonen.
00:52:02Second quickest for Mild 7 Renault, Fernando Alonso, and fastest for Panasonic Toyota, Jano Trulli.
00:52:09Jano, you're not planning to spoil Fernando's Spanish fiesta here, are you?
00:52:14Well, it's always difficult to predict.
00:52:16Last year I beat him, and I was very happy because, anyway, the crowd here are fantastic with any drivers.
00:52:25Absolutely for him, it's a nice Grand Prix.
00:52:27But on the other hand, I think Toyota now is doing a great job, and finally we are right on
00:52:32the top.
00:52:33To be honest, I'm a little bit surprised to be here because all morning I've been struggling a lot with
00:52:38the car.
00:52:39There's some problem with the engine, so at the end of the day I think all the engineers made a
00:52:43good job.
00:52:44They did a great lap, and I take the opportunity to thank the whole team and the factory as well
00:52:49because we had a new air update here.
00:52:52They worked very hard, and also as well the test team, which has been always running the car well.
00:52:57During testing, so we keep improving, and today is a good result for all of us.
00:53:03And an interesting lap because you weren't actually quickest on any of the sectors or through any of the traps,
00:53:07but the fastest lap.
00:53:09I think compared to everybody else, I got it right a bit everywhere without overdriving the car.
00:53:15That was the point, probably.
00:53:18It was a bit windy today, and I wasn't fully confident to attack like I normally do,
00:53:23so that's why I'm a little bit surprised to be here today.
00:53:27Well, congratulations.
00:53:29Fernando, the crowd support first of all, let's talk about that.
00:53:33What was it like going out, even on your outlet, those grandstands full of blue?
00:53:37Yeah, it was something special for me for sure, and probably it's my best lap in a Formula 1 car
00:53:43so far.
00:53:43You know, I think tomorrow we will have another one, and the 66 laps for the race will be something
00:53:50similar.
00:53:51And, you know, today I think the track has started to come to some people.
00:53:56Yesterday was maybe half of the grandstands.
00:53:59Today is maybe 80%, so you feel it, and it's something amazing and a pleasure.
00:54:06Well, on this lap today, after the first sector, you're a little bit down.
00:54:10Did you know at that point, and then, because you put in a brilliant second sector?
00:54:15Well, you always push every corner.
00:54:17But, yeah, I knew that I was down because I saw the biggest greens in that corner after the first
00:54:24sector,
00:54:25and I saw the orange color, it was not green, but anyway, I was doing the maximum, it was not
00:54:31because I was conservative.
00:54:33So, you know, at the end maybe, the last sector, I lost a little bit of time, but anyway, I
00:54:40didn't run too much this morning
00:54:43because we had a little problem, and, you know, to be in qualifying, the single lap qualifying with very few
00:54:52laps,
00:54:52I think I did five this morning, it's always difficult to take the maximum of the car, and, you know,
00:54:58I'm very, very happy.
00:55:00And that's because you're protecting the engine, of course, with this new regulation we have in 2005?
00:55:05No, no, it was a different problem.
00:55:07Can you talk about that a little bit?
00:55:08No, it's not anything special, and we sold out now, so everything is fine, but we lost a little bit
00:55:16in the morning.
00:55:18Thank you, Fernando.
00:55:19Kimi, from where you went out today with the track, obviously a little bit slower,
00:55:22and that little incident you had coming out of the tight left hander, a great lap for you here to
00:55:27be in the top three.
00:55:29Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed because I ran wide on corner two, I lost quite a bit of time,
00:55:35I would say that half a second to the morning, so the car seems to be quick.
00:55:42I'm just not happy to be in this place, we should have been really in the first,
00:55:46but anyhow we are very close to the second and the first guys, so it's a good place to start
00:55:51tomorrow.
00:55:53I cannot really say anything else, okay, it wasn't the best place to start,
00:55:57but the car has been working very well all weekend, so I was quite confident.
00:56:03Well, Carl, working very well in the previous race at Imola,
00:56:05to talk a little bit about the expectation at West McLaren Mercedes, the car appears to be really quick now.
00:56:11Yeah, but we still need to finish the races, it doesn't help if you put it in a pole or
00:56:16in the first three,
00:56:17if you don't finish the race you don't get points, so that's the area where we need to improve,
00:56:22and we have some work to do still, and at least we have the speed now,
00:56:27and that's the first thing, but the main thing is try to score points,
00:56:31and we desperately need more points than the other guys,
00:56:35so if we want to be anywhere close to get back in the championship,
00:56:39so everybody's definitely working hard, and we know that we have improved the car,
00:56:44and we will get some new parts for the next races again,
00:56:48so I think everything is going in the right direction.
00:56:52Thank you very much. Now, if we could have some words.
00:56:55Well, you can sense the frustration in Kimi Raikkonen's voice.
00:56:59Oh, boy.
00:56:59He is still angry about that breakdown at Imola.
00:57:02Yeah.
00:57:03He's looking on the Trulli's quick lap on the Saturday at Barcelona,
00:57:08with Sunday to come on race fuel to set the grid for Sunday afternoon's race.
00:57:12Of course, today is a demonstration of what these cars can really do.
00:57:17No fuel, a real setup for qualifying.
00:57:21Obviously, tomorrow for the second round of qualifying,
00:57:24the accurate time, the cars have race fuel.
00:57:27This is that downhill left-handed.
00:57:28It's very difficult.
00:57:29Look at it.
00:57:29All the way down here, that left-hander dropping away, dropping away, dropping away.
00:57:34Very difficult to get good grip there, especially the front end.
00:57:37Then a sudden change in directions.
00:57:39They climb that little hill there.
00:57:41Quick flip through this campsite, which is where Montoya went off yesterday.
00:57:44As you can see, no camber there to help the car at all.
00:57:46Very flat, fast corner.
00:57:50Trulli made a very good point.
00:57:52Although the car wasn't quickest in each of the three seconds,
00:57:55it worked best throughout the whole of the lap.
00:57:58And, of course, that's what you need to get the fastest lap out of it.
00:58:01It needs to work well on the infield section,
00:58:03the tight winding corners around Seat and Worth.
00:58:06And, of course, then you need the straight line speed right here.
00:58:10And although not perfect in each section,
00:58:12well, there's the result of a car that's well-balanced throughout the whole of the race.
00:58:16And, of course, that balance these days is that this year in particular is so important
00:58:20that you have good balance so that you're light as you can possibly be on your tires,
00:58:24which you've got to last right through from today,
00:58:26tomorrow's qualifying, and, of course, tomorrow's race.
00:58:28So they've got to be set up just right.
00:58:32Well, the battle for cold should be terrific.
00:58:35Truly Alonso, Raikkonen, and Schumacher.
00:58:38We'll be back to Barcelona in a moment.
00:58:41Hey, for round five of the 2005 Formula One season,
00:58:44setting the running order for Sunday's second round of qualifying.
00:58:48And for that, be sure to join us at 12 noon Eastern time
00:58:52for the all-important second round of qualifying to set the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:58:57The race itself can be seen same-day delay at 1 p.m. Eastern on CBS.
00:59:01However, on Friday, May 13th,
00:59:03you can check out our coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix at midnight Eastern,
00:59:07the witching hour.
00:59:08We'll have plenty of post-race reports from Peter Windsor,
00:59:11so you'll definitely want to check it out.
00:59:13Now let's take a look back to the highlights of last season's Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.
00:59:23Last year, new changes to the La Caixa Corner.
00:59:26And a massive crowd of Spaniards there to support native son,
00:59:31Fernando Alonso.
00:59:32Little could they have known what he would someday do.
00:59:35We were on board.
00:59:36Juan Pablo Montoya at the start.
00:59:38Truly streaked through there.
00:59:41He's hitting a low shot there.
00:59:42Look at that fantastic start of Jano.
00:59:44Truly lurking.
00:59:45He's thrown from the first row to the front.
00:59:48Going down into that all-important Elf corner side-by-side there.
00:59:52There's a button there in the BAR.
00:59:54But truly snagged the lead.
00:59:56Michael Schumacher starts it.
00:59:59Pound after the Renault out in front.
01:00:01But it would be Trulli that pitted first in the Renault R24.
01:00:04Michael Schumacher responds in that traditional way of his and Ferrari
01:00:07by knocking out a series of very quick laps.
01:00:10In comes Michael Schumacher.
01:00:11The team works well.
01:00:13Ferrari just take the lead ahead of Trulli's Renault at the end of the straight.
01:00:19Victory for Michael Schumacher.
01:00:21What a difference a year makes.
01:00:23Rubens Batacchella would eventually get second place from Jano Trulli to make it a Ferrari 1-2.
01:00:28Catherine Zeta-Jones on hand.
01:00:30Along with a bevy of celebrities.
01:00:32Michael Schumacher sprayed the champagne from atop the podium.
01:00:38I mean, he had the whole package.
01:00:40How many was he?
