AI movie ‘Klara and the Sun’ debuts at London Film Festival

Actors Amy Adams and Jenna Ortega join New Zealand director Taika Waititi on the red carpet for the London Film Festival debut of his adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s book ‘Klara and the Sun.’ The story centers around Klara, an ‘artificial friend’. Speaking to AFP on the red carpet, Waititi says 'I didn't set out to make a film that wanted to be a discussion about this impending doom that we're facing with AI – Then now that the film's coming out, all these years later, it feels strangely more relevant and more pertinent and more profound.'

00:03Hello
01:54I read this book and I was so struck by this character's point of view of the world and
01:59of humans and just her observations.
02:02It just felt at the time, and this was like four years ago that I read the book, it just
02:08felt very, it felt relevant to me.
02:11It didn't feel topical or anything at the time because no one was really talking about
02:14ChatGPT or AI at that point.
02:17So I didn't set out to make a film that wanted to be a discussion about this impending doom
02:23that we're facing with AI.
02:25I wanted to tell the story about an outsider who happened to not be human, who happened
02:29to be a machine who comes into a broken family and helps them live again.
02:33Then, now that the film's coming out, all these years later, it feels strangely more relevant
02:39and more pertinent and more profound.
02:43So I think a similar thing happened with Jojo Rabbit, actually.
02:46When I shot it, there weren't as many Nazis in the world.
02:50And then that came out, just at the right time.
