00:00A killer taunted an entire nation and was never caught.
00:04He wrote coded letters.
00:06He demanded his crimes on the front page.
00:09Fifty-five years later, nobody knows his name.
00:13This is the Zodiac.
00:16It began on December 20, 1968.
00:21A lonely lover's lane outside Vallejo, California.
00:26Two teenagers sat in their car.
00:29Another car pulled up.
00:31Both were shot dead.
00:33No robbery, no motive, no witnesses.
00:38Seven months later, the 4th of July.
00:41Same pattern.
00:43A hooded figure with a flashlight approached a parked car, then opened fire.
00:49One victim survived and gave police the first real description of the killer.
00:55Then the letter started.
00:56The San Francisco Chronicle received strange messages from a man who called himself, the Zodiac.
01:04Each one signed with the same chilling symbol.
01:07A crosshair.
01:08The letters contained ciphers, puzzles of scrambled symbols.
01:13The Zodiac promised they revealed his identity.
01:17One was cracked in days.
01:19The rest refused to give up his name for decades.
01:23At Lake Berryessa.
01:25In broad daylight, a hooded figure wearing the crosshair symbol attacked two college students with a knife, then wrote the
01:35dates of his crimes on their car door, and walked away.
01:40October 1969.
01:42A cab driver in San Francisco was shot dead.
01:46The Zodiac mailed a torn piece of the victim's bloodied shirt to the Chronicle.
01:51To prove that he was the one who did it.
01:54Then came the phone calls.
01:56This is the Zodiac speaking.
01:58Bomb threats.
02:00Demands for coverage.
02:02Live television interrupted.
02:04An entire city held its breath.
02:07Waiting for his next move.
02:09The suspects piled up.
02:11Hundreds of names.
02:13Dozens of serious leads.
02:16Fingerprints.
02:17DNA from stamps.
02:19Handwriting experts.
02:21Nothing ever matched cleanly.
02:23Every trail went cold.
02:26In 2020, codebreakers finally cracked the Zodiac's famous cipher after 51 years.
02:34It taunted.
02:36It mocked.
02:37But it named no one.
02:40The Zodiac killer remains unidentified.
02:44America's most famous faceless ghost.
