00:00Our game against Chelsea, we'll start off with Vinny from Sky.
00:03David, how did you look back at that victory over Chelsea in March?
00:05Because at that time it felt like a big moment in terms of just settling in, I suppose,
00:09getting a win like that against this calibre of opposition.
00:12It was a really important win at the time, it felt a big result for us.
00:16Unfortunately it didn't lead into us getting what we wanted, it was European football.
00:19But at the time it felt like three really important points.
00:23How different then are you at this point? How different are Chelsea?
00:29Well, I'm not an expert on Chelsea, but obviously I think we know a lot of their players individually
00:35and we know their manager, so they've obviously got a really good squad of players
00:40and a good manager as well.
00:41So I think every time you play Chelsea, I can't really remember in my history
00:46of being a manager in the Premier League when I've not felt that Chelsea's had a good side
00:49and good manager, so we're going to it again and look forward to it.
00:57I think we're different in some ways, but I still think that we've got a lot of traits
01:03which we've had to keep over the years, but I think we're improving,
01:07I think we're evolving a little bit better, so hopefully we can keep that going.
01:10You've praised the players a lot. I just wonder, can you put into context
01:13the kind of attitude you see from the players day to day?
01:16Because it seems that even after the window ended and then the news broke about the ownership
01:22looking to potentially sell the club, there's been no kind of attitude from the players
01:26where they're almost saying, we didn't sign up for this kind of thing.
01:29No, and I don't expect it, and I don't think managers would do that.
01:34I think we all expect the players to focus on their job, concentrating, hopefully winning,
01:39but certainly doing the best you can in the pitch.
01:41So I think the players have bought into it, they understand it.
01:46I've recently been mentioning Leicester City who won the league with not too many players,
01:50so we've not got too many players, I'm not saying we're going to win the league,
01:53but we want to try and challenge and we want to try and be around the top teams if we
01:57can.
01:58You've been kind of reinforcing that message then?
02:00Well, I've been reinforcing it because that's what I want us to do.
02:02I want us to be positive, I want us to be a side who, I would hope that Chelsea coming
02:08would think it would be a difficult game for them, competitive game for them,
02:11but I would hope that any other side coming to Everton would feel that.
02:16I don't want that to change.
02:17Away from the game, David, is there anything happening as regards your own future here
02:21and talks over a new contract?
02:22Well, I'm getting on with the job and trying to build Everton and keep it going
02:27in the right direction.
02:28Hopefully we've done some half-decent things in the last year and a half or so.
02:35So we'll see.
02:37The reason I ask is because we have been led to believe that once the window had shut,
02:41then there was the potential for you and the board to have talks regarding the future.
02:46Have any talks happened at all?
02:47There's been plenty of talks happening through the summer,
02:49so maybe just the way things have gone at the moment,
02:52it's just a little bit of a lull, maybe try to get things in order.
02:56But look, as I said many times, it's not the most important thing to me.
03:00I just want to keep trying to drive Everton on and build them up and see if we can continue
03:06to improve.
03:06Can we check?
03:07Mikalenko, how was he?
03:08Kristi Norgard ready to start?
03:10Jared Brantwijk had a dead leg.
03:11Yeah.
03:13Jared had a problem.
03:15He got it really early in the game and had a problem,
03:17so we've been sort of half-looking at that during the week a little bit.
03:22Mikko's doing much better.
03:23Mikko's got a chance for the game.
03:25And who was the other one you asked me about?
03:28Christian.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Christian, yeah, still got a bit to go.
03:32Still got a wee bit to go.
03:36But I think I could use him at certain times if required,
03:39but I don't know if he's ready to start the game yet.
03:41I just finally wanted to ask you about Tieno.
03:43How do you weigh up the positivity of him getting the big chances that he has
03:46with the need for him to convert more of them?
03:49Ah, well, we're so pleased about the goals he's scoring.
03:52We really are.
03:54But I think somebody told me the other day that I think he might have missed
03:58the most big chances in the Premier League.
04:01Some centre-formers might see that as,
04:03I'm not going to say a compliment,
04:04but they'll still see it as getting in the right place at the right time
04:07and getting those opportunities.
04:08When you're the manager, you just want them to score.
04:11Because I've said many times,
04:12I don't think necessarily we'll be a team which gets loads and loads of opportunities.
04:16So we probably have to be clinical when we get those opportunities.
04:19So I like him to score more.
04:22I like him to be cleaner when he has to be.
04:23But I'm pleased the way he's moving forward.
04:25You also have to remember he's a 23-year-old.
04:27He's got a big responsibility,
04:29being the one real natural focal point for your attack.
04:33Yeah, let's be fair.
04:34That should help you, shouldn't it?
04:35Because while you're the one,
04:37you should be saying,
04:38hey, I've got a chance of playing every week here at the moment.
04:39I've got a chance of scoring.
04:40But if you take that for granted,
04:42then it's no good, is it?
04:43You can't just be saying,
04:44hey, I've got no pressure now.
04:46And most players in football have pressure from somebody,
04:49whether it's a young boy coming through the academy
04:51who's going to be a good player,
04:52or whether it's you having a couple of centre-formers at the club.
04:56So, he's not got that at the moment.
05:00So, if it helps him,
05:01he should be trying to score more
05:02and keep up the work he's doing.
05:04He's got a few goals.
05:05Thanks, David.
05:05Thanks, Vinny.
05:06We'll go to Stuart, Premier League Studios.
05:09Hi, Stuart.
05:10Chelsea obviously scored plenty of goals,
05:12but they also have conceded quite freely this season.
05:16I wonder what you make of them,
05:17and therefore what sort of game you keep with it.
05:20Probably a little bit of what you said.
05:22I think their attacking line is incredibly exciting looking,
05:26and I think it's proved that in different games.
05:28I also think that they've got some super defenders as well,
05:33but I think they are playing quite an expansive game,
05:35which on its day could lead to goals,
05:38and on another day could lead to defeats.
05:41But, look, I think every time you've played Chelsea,
05:44any time I've played Chelsea,
05:45I think it's always been a good game.
05:47I think back over the years,
05:48the players Chelsea have had,
05:51you know, the difficulty trying to beat them
05:53was always tough.
05:55But, no, we'll do our best.
05:57We're in a good place.
05:58We've been playing quite well ourselves at times,
06:00so hopefully we can show it again.
06:02The 3-0 that we mentioned in March
06:04didn't lead to perhaps what you exactly wanted,
06:07but when you look back,
06:09was that one of the best nights at the new stadium?
06:13Yeah, I believe it was
06:15because of the nature of the game
06:17and the way it went.
06:19And, look, Chelsea, as I rightly said there,
06:22have always had a great reputation
06:23over the years in the Premier League
06:25and done really well.
06:26So to beat Chelsea like that is good.
06:28So we need to try and do it again,
06:29and, you know, we need to go into the game
06:31with the same mentality,
06:32same attitude which we had on the night.
06:35We knew if we were going to be close
06:37to being around Europe,
06:38we were going to have to win
06:39some of those big games at home
06:40and we've done it on that night.
06:42Of course, Dewsbury Hall joined from Chelsea
06:46against the goals last week.
06:48How much has he developed?
06:50How important has he become?
06:51He's become hugely important.
06:53I think MD who watched us all last season
06:55where I said his form last year was so good.
07:00I think he was probably close to the England set-up,
07:03but if you look at the quality of the players
07:05who they probably have in those roles,
07:07some of them probably playing for Chelsea at the moment,
07:10it makes it really difficult maybe to get in there.
07:12But for here at Everton, he's done a great job.
07:14His goals, his assists,
07:17he had a little bit of a dip,
07:18but I just think he's just beginning
07:19to find his way back now.
07:21So let's hope that's the case.
07:24Thanks, David.
07:24Thanks, Stuart.
07:25We'll go to Julia at Radio Merseyside.
07:28Hi, Julia.
07:29Going into this, on Beaton,
07:31I think there's only three sides left on Beaton,
07:33including Everton.
07:34Fifth, level on points with Chelsea.
07:35How do you now go about turning those draws
07:39such as the one at Hull into wins?
07:42Well, that's the difficult bit
07:43because obviously I would like to get the wins under my belt
07:46because the wins are really important for other reasons,
07:48that you build up your points total
07:50and you can go through the stages
07:52when you're only picking up a point at a time.
07:55Sometimes it's good to win away from home
07:56or sorry to draw away from home,
07:58but we want to try and keep winning.
08:00We need to get some more wins.
08:02But ultimately, it's really nice when you say
08:04you're unbeaten
08:06because that's a big part of it
08:07and, you know,
08:08we've had to show a bit of resilience
08:10in some of the games,
08:11come from behind late in games,
08:13you know, get back in them
08:14and we've done that.
08:16So, I'm hoping that we can start to pick up
08:19a few more wins,
08:19but you're right,
08:20I'd like to turn them.
08:21We should have won the game at Hull
08:24and some of those things we've talked about,
08:25about big misses, big chances,
08:27we're part of that as well.
08:29Since Jack Grealish returned,
08:31it's been a battle between him and Tyreek George
08:33to start on that left-hand side.
08:36What goes into that selection process
08:38and is there a world where Tyreek might push Jack Grealish
08:42out of the world?
08:43Absolutely.
08:44I think Tyreek's knocking on the door.
08:45I think he started a wee bit slow
08:47then picked up.
08:48So, yeah,
08:49there's huge competition in that position.
08:51You know,
08:52Jack's aware of it as well
08:53that Tyreek's there
08:55and he's done well for us, Tyreek.
08:57We've quite enjoyed it.
08:58We will bring him on.
09:00We think he can probably do a job
09:01on both sides as well.
09:02So, we have to look at that as well.
09:05On that competition for places,
09:08Jake O'Brien has struggled for minutes
09:10when he arrived at Everton.
09:12I appreciate you weren't here,
09:13but he was sort of billed as
09:15the next centre-back.
09:16His height and everything seemed to fit
09:18with what was wanted at Everton.
09:19What can he do to push to play at centre-back?
09:23Well, at the moment,
09:24he would need to put out
09:25probably an England international
09:27and also, at the moment,
09:29the club captain in Tarqui
09:30who I think have played very well
09:31in the games.
09:33So, you've got to wait
09:34for your opportunity
09:35and when your opportunity comes,
09:36you need to be ready to take it.
09:38We like Jake a lot
09:39for lots of reasons.
09:40I thought over the last year or so,
09:42he's done a brilliant job for us
09:43as a right-back.
09:44It's not his position,
09:45but he filled in well.
09:48He's got really good speed
09:50and he's got a lot of strength about him,
09:52things which we like.
09:54So, he's an important member of the squad,
09:57but he's going to have to wait his time
09:58and wait to see
10:00when the opportunity comes up for him.
10:01How do you as a manager
10:02deal with that?
10:03Because although it is a small squad
10:05in some areas of the pitch,
10:06you do have competition.
10:08So, you've got Hayes and Hackney as well,
10:09Tyler Dibling.
10:11How are you dealing with that at the moment?
10:13Because I imagine they're asking you
10:15for a minute.
10:16Well, if you look at all the managers,
10:17nearly all the managers
10:18of situations like this,
10:19whatever club you're at,
10:20you have players.
10:21Partly now more because
10:22every club has bigger squads as well.
10:25So, it's the sort of question
10:26that can always be asked
10:27because there's always a player
10:29who's not playing
10:30and what are you going to do about him?
10:31So, it's football.
10:33All the managers have got the same.
10:34It's the worst part of the job
10:36as a football manager
10:37not being able to pick all the players
10:39because most of them
10:40are desperate to play.
10:41They all want to play,
10:42but the job is to pick 11.
10:44You try and do the best.
10:45I don't know of any managers
10:47who don't put their best team out
10:50or a team out
10:51where they think should be there to win.
10:54So, you can only just trust the managers
10:56that the decisions they're making
10:57they think are the right ones at the time.
10:59Just finally for me,
11:00I know we've spoken about
11:01Sieno Barry there.
11:02I know some social media stuff came out
11:04that showed him
11:05sort of behind the scenes
11:05working on it.
11:06He was quite emotional himself
11:08about those missed chances
11:10and the pressure he puts on
11:11onto himself.
11:12Do you think
11:13because he is a striker
11:14he's the lone striker now
11:16you are judged on numbers
11:17when you're in that position
11:18how many goals you've scored.
11:19Do you think sometimes
11:19he's a bit misunderstood
11:20and he really is
11:22you know
11:23he cares a lot more
11:24than maybe people think.
11:25I was very emotional
11:26with the misses
11:27let me tell you.
11:30So,
11:30I don't do social media
11:32but if you'd seen me
11:33I would have been in bits
11:34I don't know
11:35if you'd seen me as the manager.
11:38by the way
11:39I think that
11:40we all know
11:42all the players care
11:43so we do
11:44so there's the managers
11:45and look
11:46he's a boy
11:47all the things we've said.
11:50Sort of coming
11:51getting used to the Premier League
11:52for a young striker
11:53is not easy
11:54got a lot of things to learn
11:55we took a sort of gamble
11:57on bringing him in
11:58when we did
12:00and he's still learning
12:02he's still getting better
12:02he's young enough yet
12:04to improve greatly
12:05but he's done so this year
12:07so I don't think
12:08there's ever any harm
12:09when people try
12:10to make themselves better
12:11I don't mind that at all.
12:12Live stream for you
12:13as well next time.
12:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:16Thank you, good luck.
12:17Thanks Julian.
12:18Any further questions
12:19in the open section
12:20before we move on?
12:22No?
12:23Okay, thank you.
