00:00okay let's talk about it real quick let's make it make sense i know all last week all over social
00:04media you saw nothing but teachers talking about how elementary and middle school kids are reading
00:10four years below grade level well as a high school teacher i'm here to inform you that high school
00:15kids are doing way worse they are reading six years below grade level the only difference is
00:21a whole heap of these kids are going to graduate at the end of this school year and we are
00:25expecting
00:26them to go to college and obtain jobs when they cannot even comprehend basic skills which is why
00:33we probably see a problem with employers finding employees there are literally high school kids
00:40reading on a third grade reading level and still states are expecting teachers to prepare kids and
00:46have them pass state tests are on or above grade level see the issue is schools have dumbed it down
00:54for kids they have made it so easy that kids believe that their only job is to show up and
00:59behave and
01:00that should be enough to get a passing grade and to go on to the next grade level we have
01:05a real issue
01:06here and please do not talk to me about graduation rates because bugs bunny could graduate in this era
01:13yeah we gotta we gotta bring back this topic of discussion because i think this is a really
01:27really important topic and i don't think it's something that we should allow to kind of die off
01:33or kind of fall to the wayside because as you heard there these students are graduating and some of them
01:40have the reading our art read at the equivalent of a third grade reading level
01:51and honestly honestly i believe it i really do because i'm sure some of you have seen some of the
01:59video clips of people holding up a note card and having these young folks read it and they can't read
02:07i don't know 75 to 85 of the note card they might get a couple of words right but it's
02:16almost as if
02:17they're guessing what the word is they're not actually reading it you know let alone comprehend what the
02:23words even mean it's crazy it's crazy and yes some of them might be a little bit bigger of words
02:31but
02:32they're they're words that anybody with a 12th grade level education should most certainly know
02:39one hundred percent easily know you know what i mean it's not one of those obscure words where it's
02:47like geez i've never seen that one before you know and even even i have some moments still to this
02:53day
02:53right where i come across the word i'm like i've never seen that word before you know just like weird
02:59words you know what i mean you guys have those moments but like it's not even like one of those
03:03words it's like simple stuff and i've played video clips in the past i'm not going to bore you guys
03:08with that again today but i have this video clip of this teacher that i want to break down with
03:14you
03:15all so with that being said smack the like button subscribe if you are new and let's dive in this
03:20job
03:21is exhausting like it's exhausting like you to be a teacher you have to come here and like
03:31you're giving so much energy like it is exhausting i'm not feeling well today
03:39and it doesn't matter it doesn't matter how i feel
03:46it's like almost like you gotta come in here and like just shove everything and all your thoughts
03:51and all your problems to the side and you have to like just like pour into these kids and like
03:58it's exhausting i'm exhausted breaks my heart because there's so many kids that are like just
04:04really struggling academically and it hurts me because it's like i i care so much like even with
04:10the literacy crisis with everything we're learning we're doing sight words now and one of the sight
04:16words is everyone right clearly they're not studying at home i have centers i do review every day and
04:23parents are not studying with them at home and the data comes back and they're failing one girl passed
04:30one girl out of 34 kids that i have 34 kids one passed
04:37and i literally put the word on the board i write it on the board and i say copy and
04:42they're copying it
04:43wrong and you're when you're in the front line as an educator it's almost scary because you're like
04:49dude like what is like and then you start questioning yourself you're like is it me like what i'm exhausted
04:58like today i'm i'm at a zero like i'm at a zero i just want to do my job and
05:04i just want to go home
05:06for the last two months i've been like go go go and today like my body's like carol like
05:12you need to stop like you need to
05:17i don't know and then i got one comment and they were like why are you so tired all your
05:23videos you're
05:24sitting down be so for real right now you think i'm just rolling around in my chair
05:31because i sit down for a part of my lesson this is exhausting emotionally physically spiritually it's
05:38exhausting even when i have boundaries in place because you do right like my last video to survive
05:44this you need to have boundaries you need to have certain systems in place so that you don't go crazy
05:50it's things that i'm constantly pushing myself to do but like when you're in the front line here
05:57like bro it's exhausting i also get comments like you're so loud you're doing too much to your kids
06:06do you know how hard it is to keep 34 little kids engaged all day
06:13i have to project i have to move i have to change my voice and lower my voice and like
06:20there's some days that i like doing it but man to do that every single day it's exhausting
06:30this is an elementary school teacher and if you're wondering where she teaches i looked it up and it
06:36looks like she is in new york according to this they're about 50 of the students in elementary
06:43school are proficient in reading now i don't know if that's accurate though because according to this
06:48elementary school teacher she says that out of 34 students i believe only one of them passed so that is
06:55horrible but it's not shocking because there's so many teachers that are coming forward and saying
07:00this exact same thing across the board reading writing math everything none of the students can do
07:06anything they don't pay attention um one thing that she said is that she'll tell them to write
07:11something copy something and they can't even do that i showed a video of another teacher and she
07:15said it was so bad that the students didn't even know how to take the cap off of a highlighter
07:20and put
07:20it on the back end of the highlighter to make sure it didn't get lost i mean that's the state
07:24of education
07:24in america let's just see what the comments have to say about this it's not you it's the parents it
07:30starts at home i mean that's kind of what this teacher is saying too she's saying that she gives
07:33them homework and they don't do the homework and she knows the parents don't do it with them
07:37and that is very common i too believe that this is the main problem i think our education system
07:44is bad it's gotten really bad i think that people all the immigrants and everybody that have come in
07:49and they don't speak english is a huge problem but the biggest problem i think is the parents here
07:55is a teacher who said i had to quit i ended up in inpatient unit in september due to poor
08:00mental health
08:0130 beds five of us were teachers this is nuts 50 000 likes it's the ipads it means the shorter
08:08attention span teaching is abuse as a fellow teacher this is not an exaggeration i go home
08:14exhausted every single day i blame the parents so everyone kind of agrees it's the parents it starts
08:21at home but then the question comes how do we change that where how do we get accountability because
08:27i know when i was in school you had to act right you had to do your homework or you
08:32didn't pass or
08:33you just got expelled or suspended or you had to go to a different school that accountability largely
08:38just doesn't exist anymore and i think that we need to bring it back i agree 100 with uh that
08:46last bit
08:47we need to bring back some accountability not just on the part of the student um especially in this
08:53case because we were talking about little kids elementary school kids although there needs to be
08:58some accountability on their part but also on the parents also on the parents right um and we need to
09:07stop this uh no child left behind kind of silly talk because with that every child is getting left behind
09:17one kid could pass that one out of 34
09:23she writes something on the board and they they can't even copy it correctly
09:29like that like that that almost sounds unbelievable you know a teacher writes something
09:36copy this on your piece of paper and they can't do it
09:42that's that's like it's almost unfathomable like how can you possibly not be able to
09:49like you're copying it it's right there it's in your face this isn't this isn't something that you have
09:57to think about like even if you don't know the letters you can just copy the way that it looks
10:08they can't do it
10:12it's crazy man and it's not just the little kids as you guys heard in the first clip that i
10:17played for
10:17you it's high school students as well third grade reading level can barely read they're graduating
10:26that is unacceptable unacceptable
10:33the way that these schools are just pushing these students through is just crazy
10:40when i was in high school hey if you didn't pass you didn't pass we'll see you next year in
10:46the same
10:46grade we're not just gonna push you along no no no no no no no no no right now it's
10:54just up
10:55push them along anyway oh you failed fourth grade we'll see you in fifth oh you failed 12th grade
11:03uh you'll still get the walk of graduation you'll still get your diploma don't worry about it
11:09it's crazy uh the this participation trophy culture is garbage it's garbage
11:20and i i i feel like that's part of what it is right not wanting to hurt people's feelings
11:27you can't you can't um fail them no no it's gonna be detrimental to their mental health so
11:38maybe it needs to be at this point
11:44grow some tougher skin that's also something as well like people are getting so soft today
11:49it's ridiculous um but we're gonna save that topic of discussion for another video
11:54uh but yeah we need to bring back accountability um and um there was there was one teacher that i
12:02came
12:02across i might have i might have uh shown you guys the video clip but i believe there was a
12:06teacher who
12:07was talking about how um instead of it being a partnership you know with the teacher student
12:15the parent right instead of it being like a partnership or a collaboration it's now um more
12:21like um it's more what i can't remember what she said it's more like a transaction or like a um
12:29i think i think that's kind of what she said because if i remember correctly she said it was more
12:33like a um
12:34um transaction because now it's just the customer is always correct
12:41you know you have some parents who are offended when you fail their students or give them a bad grade
12:47and they go and complain and then the principal steps in and tries to fix the grade and all of
12:52this other
12:52stuff no your child no i'm not gonna say what i was not gonna say that um uh we're gonna
13:01be nice uh
13:01your child is not up to snuff
13:05and that's part partly your fault i feel like a lot of parents aren't reading to their kids on a
13:10daily basis anymore that art has been lost not to say that that's the end-all be-all right um
13:17but
13:19still you you you have the advent of these tablets and uh computer screens and tv screens and kids are
13:26just
13:26glued to it and that's all they ever there's no there's no uh genuine interaction with parents that
13:34is meaningful outside of you know hey what do you want to eat or you know what i mean but
13:41it's crazy man it's crazy and it's sad to watch
13:46sad to watch when you see some of these clips of these young folks who can't read
13:51can't tell time you get you give them a clock they don't they don't have a clue how to read
13:57it
13:58not a clue like not even in the ballpark either you know what i mean like even if they were
14:06like in
14:06the ballpark oh yeah that hand is there that hand is there okay it's probably blah blah blah like
14:11they're not even in the ballpark not even close
14:19and those students are growing up to be be adults and they're graduating and going out into the real
14:25world and those are the people that we're going to be living amongst we got to fix it ladies and
14:30gentlemen we got to fix it but what do you think the solution is to the problem let me know
14:34stay safe
14:35out there peace and love i'm out
