00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're laying out the facts you need to know, and the questions you may still
00:05have, about Elizabeth Holmes' partner Billy Evans.
00:08Is he the villain of the story, or a puppet for Holmes' next endeavors?
00:12Be warned, this video will include spoilers and revelations from You Can See Everything.
00:23While Evans bears it all in some ways in You Can See Everything, if you know you know,
00:28he is exceptionally evasive when it comes to discussing his family.
00:32During an on-screen chat with director Nathan Fielder, Fielder addresses the fact that Evans comes from money.
00:37I mean, weren't you worried she was, uh, sort of scamming you?
00:41A hundred percent, but what did she have to gain from me?
00:43Well, isn't your family rich?
00:45Which he implies could have been a motivating factor to Evans and Holmes' whirlwind romance.
00:50At the mere mention of this, Evans ends the conversation,
00:54leaving the audience to wonder what he doesn't want us to know or assume about this facet of his background.
00:59Billy Evans is an heir to the Evans Luxury Hotel Empire, which was founded by his grandparents in 1953.
01:11Evans' father, William L. Evans, is a key figure in the business,
01:15making Billy's current net worth an estimated $10 million.
01:18That said, these figures are unconfirmed, and there is no public record of Evans contributing
01:24to Holmes' legal fees or restitution, despite speculation.
01:28According to Holmes, money has never been important to her in any aspect of her life or decision-making,
01:33and her relationship with Evans is driven purely by love.
01:37There's like a lot of different levels of wealth.
01:40How did Evans meet Holmes?
01:42Speaking of their whirlwind romance,
01:44you can see everything gives us both Evans' and Holmes' perspective on the inception of their relationship.
01:49The two met in 2017 at a party,
01:52and both claim that their first interaction was nothing short of love at first sight.
01:57I knew it.
01:59You were faking it.
02:00I was asleep.
02:02Though Evans recounts Holmes having been wearing sunglasses,
02:05a big hat, and a band-aid on her face during this initial conversation,
02:09so perhaps it was more like love at first speak.
02:12Oh, I love you.
02:14I love you, too.
02:15When discussing this moment with Fielder,
02:18Evans claims that he knew who Elizabeth Holmes was at the time,
02:21but did not realize who he had been speaking with until hours into their meeting.
02:25At this point in Theranos history,
02:27the company's clinical lab had been completely shut down,
02:30but they had yet to be legally charged with any crimes.
02:33So how many tests could that device perform in 2010?
02:37I don't know.
02:38Evans proposed to Holmes a year later,
02:41a few months after Theranos' indictment.
02:43Though partners and co-parents,
02:46Holmes and Evans are not legally married.
02:48What is Evans' and Holmes' relationship dynamic?
02:51From the pair's point of view,
02:53the purpose of inviting the crew of You Can See Everything
02:56so intimately inside of their lives was to provide a true picture of Holmes' truth
03:01and intentions prior to her imprisonment.
03:03You really feel you did nothing wrong?
03:05I did not.
03:06So where did things get lost?
03:09Like, how are you where you are right now?
03:13I wish I knew.
03:14And while the documentary does provide fascinating insight into her psyche,
03:19even if posing more questions than answers,
03:21the nature of the couple's partnership quickly comes into focus.
03:24Over the course of the film,
03:26we witness many red flag moments that seem to indicate
03:29that Evans has manipulative and controlling tendencies over Holmes.
03:33Even in small moments,
03:35we see Evans speak for Holmes,
03:37overtake her on small tasks,
03:38and attempt to control her narrative.
03:40Holmes does not appear phased by these behaviors,
03:43setting the stage for larger-scale control concerns
03:46that arise later in the film.
03:48Not only are Holmes and Evans in a romantic relationship,
03:51they are business partners.
03:53The film shows the two working together
03:55to develop a new biotech product
03:56on the heels of the fraudulent Theranos.
03:59Even up until their last remaining days
04:01prior to Holmes' surrender to federal prison,
04:03business is at the front of both of their minds.
04:06I know what you're feeling.
04:07No, you don't.
04:10While we cannot know the truly intimate details
04:13of this relationship,
04:15you can see everything raises questions
04:16about the nature of Holmes and Evans' arrangement.
04:19For the cameras, the two are deeply in love.
04:22But is this really a love story
04:24or just a beautiful picture painted by two cunning people
04:26looking for their next big deal?
04:28You've never been suspicious
04:30that she's ever lied to you.
04:32No, ever.
04:34Will he relaunch Theranos?
04:36Following Holmes' surrender,
04:38Evans makes it clear
04:39that he will continue to run their joint business.
04:41He claims to not need Holmes' explicit guidance
04:44or opinions on business matters,
04:46as he feels he already knows what she would want
04:48and how she would think.
04:49If you understand that early that you're at risk,
04:53there's a lot more that you can do about it.
04:55You Can See Everything gives us glimpses
04:57into the growth of this new technological endeavor,
05:00which is conceptually very similar
05:01to the Theranos blood testing product,
05:03but instead will utilize lasers.
05:06Though not referenced by name in the film,
05:08the company is called Hemanthus,
05:10and it was launched in 2024,
05:12just under a year after Holmes went to prison.
05:15Legally, Holmes is not a formal partner in the startup,
05:18though the documentary shows her
05:20extremely close involvement in its development.
05:23As of 2025, Hemanthus has raised millions of dollars.
05:27Similarly to Holmes,
05:28Evans does not have a formal science background,
05:31instead lauding a degree in economics from MIT.
05:34Yeah, so my background's in the photonic space.
05:36I helped build a company called Luminar.
05:37We built LiDAR for autonomous vehicles.
05:39Evans appears intent on dismissing connections
05:42between Hemanthus and Theranos,
05:43as exhibited in a particularly heated scene
05:46in the documentary.
05:47I fell in love in that first conversation.
05:50Before or after that she revealed
05:53she was the founder of Theranos?
05:54Probably before.
05:56Fielder interviews a member of the new company's team
05:58and asks him to speak to the product's overt connection
06:01to the fraudulent Theranos.
06:03Evans storms in and demands the cameras be cut,
06:05despite pledging total transparency
06:07for the purposes of the film.
06:09Is he pulling the strings?
06:12Given everything that the film reveals
06:14and obscures about Evans and Holmes,
06:16a key question arises.
06:18Is Billy Evans the villain of this story?
06:20As the film unfolds,
06:22Evans' involvement in Holmes' affairs
06:24appears more and more concerning.
06:26We learn that he holds a power of attorney document over her,
06:29meaning he has complete control to act on her behalf,
06:32despite Holmes being alive
06:34and mentally capable of decision-making.
06:36Does any part of you worry about me being here 24-7?
06:40I don't think so.
06:41While she's in prison,
06:43he uses her name and likeness however he sees fit.
06:45He manages her ex-account,
06:47posting content online that she has not seen or approved.
06:51Arguably most eerily,
06:52he creates an AI model of Holmes
06:54and pushes it to the public for widespread use.
06:58About halfway through You Can See Everything,
07:00Fielder reveals information
07:01that changes the stakes of the film entirely.
07:04What if I see something that makes you look bad?
07:06We learn that during initial conversations with the couple
07:09at the start of the filming process,
07:11Evans demanded that they receive a cut
07:13from the film's commercial earnings.
07:14This is highly atypical
07:16and a clear violation of documentary ethics,
07:19but as the crew had already begun shooting,
07:21they made a deal and agreed to Evans' terms.
07:24But something was amiss.
07:26Holmes had conveniently left the room
07:28during this pivotal conversation
07:29and later in the production process
07:31made an offhand comment to Fielder
07:33that she had nothing financially to gain from the film.
07:36This raised alarm bells.
07:38Had Evans truly withheld this information from her
07:40or was this all an act to keep her hands clean?
07:43Fielder attempts to answer this question himself,
07:46but ultimately, like many of Holmes' indiscretions,
07:49it's all a matter of interpretation.
07:50But what is relatively clear
07:52is that Holmes' relationships are key to her endeavors.
07:56And if you're inclined to believe
07:58that Evans is the true mastermind pulling the strings,
08:01then what does that imply about her former partnership
08:03with Theranos COO, Sunny Bawani?
08:05If you have yet to see the film, fear not.
08:08Ultimately, neither Holmes nor Evans will profit from it.
08:12That said, it still remains to be seen
08:14how the documentary's reception
08:16could affect public perception of him,
08:18Holmes, and their budding business venture.
08:25What other questions did You Can See Everything leave you wondering?
