00:02A day after the latest U.S. school shooting, authorities in Bend, Oregon revealed new details of the attack at
00:09Silver Rail Elementary School, where a 16-year-old former student killed three children and a 25-year-old teacher.
00:17Police said a teacher fought the gunman before a father who followed the shooter into the school fatally shot him.
00:24A teacher in the classroom threw her cell phone at the suspect and then tackled him and fought to take
00:30the firearm from him.
00:31She was not injured in that incident, but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.
00:35Officials said the parent had followed the shooter into the school upon witnessing him firing a shotgun from just outside
00:42campus.
00:43By the time police arrived within three minutes of receiving their first call, the shooter was dead.
00:50In the meantime, the assailant, who had shot through locked glass doors to enter the campus, had killed four people
00:57and wounded two others.
01:00Krantz credited the classroom teacher with helping to stop the gunman and praised the father, saying his quick actions likely
01:07saved lives.
01:09Bend resident Michael Zappa also praised the father for intervening.
01:14Thank God.
01:21For that father.
01:24He saved a lot of lives yesterday.
01:31And our prayer should go out for him because he has a lot on his mind today.
01:38And so we wish him well and thank God for him.
01:45The shooter, identified as Griffin J. John II, fired about 15 rounds in the classroom and was carrying another 44
01:55rounds.
01:56Investigators are working to establish his motive and how he obtained the 12-gauge shotgun.
02:02The victims were three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, and 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert.
02:10A 7-year-old child remained in serious but stable condition, while another teacher sustained serious but non-life-threatening
02:18injuries.
02:20Lambert's family remembered her as a compassionate person who stood up for vulnerable people, particularly those with special needs.
02:28The shooting traumatized the community in Bend, a city of about 100,000 people.
02:35Nine-year-old fourth grader Kalani Jornay and her classmates were among those who heard gunshots from a nearby classroom.
02:42When you started to hear gunshots, do you remember what went through your head?
02:47It was kind of like that we might die.
02:54We really couldn't talk because we couldn't, even if we tried to talk, we couldn't let it out of our
03:02mouths because we were just so scared.
03:05Kalani said a friend planned to seek therapy following the ordeal.
03:09Residents gathered at a makeshift memorial outside the school on Friday to mourn the victims and pay their respects.
