00:00New York had a completely different project of building an airport in the middle of Manhattan.
00:04In 1946, a proposal aimed at building an immense airport of 400 hectares above the west side of Manhattan,
00:11s'étendant on 144 blocks, from the 24th to the 71th street.
00:15This colossal structure would culminate at 60 mètres of height,
00:19surplombing the streets of the city like a floating piste.
00:22The goal was to approach the transport aérien of Manhattan,
00:26evitant ainsi the trip to the Queens and New Jersey.
00:29But this vision is beyond a simple airport.
00:32It was a real pôle multifunctional,
00:35integrating spaces for restaurants, bureaus, and even quais for ships,
00:39creating a harmonious relationship with the flights aérien and maritime.
00:42However, the project, estimated at 3 milliards of dollars,
00:45was finally abandoned because of the security concerns
00:48liées to the environment and its cost exorbitant.
00:51It's a audacious idea, but never realized,
00:53it shows the ambition and innovation characteristic of New York during the middle of the 20th century.
