A tragic stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata claimed the lives of seventeen people and left twenty-five others injured after a sudden burst of rain triggered chaos. The incident occurred on the first day of the festival when people rushed inside the pandal to seek shelter from the downpour, creating intense crowd pressure as visitors near the exit did not step out. Administration officials, police, fire services, and disaster management teams responded to evacuate the injured, who were admitted to hospital for treatment. In the aftermath, directives were issued to other puja pandals across the city to eliminate dark areas, improve lighting, and review crowd control measures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured.

00:47So, we have the official confirmation there of 17 people dead and 25 injured.
00:54And as we were told that other Pooja Pandals have also now been directed to ensure that there are no
01:03dark areas, there is sufficient light and no such incident happens or repeats in any of the other Pooja Pandals.
01:12But the question really is that something that was supposed to be joyous, a moment that was supposed to be
01:22celebrated across the city has now turned into a tragedy.
01:2717 lives have been lost in Kolkata, in Chorbagan, Pooja Pandal, where a stampede ensued due to a sudden burst
01:36of rain.
01:37And after that, 17 people died in a stampede.
01:41And the news that we are getting is that the government right now is trying their best to fight.
02:16We have to stop these people.
02:38So clearly the big point here is that we understand that 17 people have died.
02:46This was a stampede that started because there was a sudden burst of rain and people trying to save themselves
02:53from rain.
02:54It sort of happened that there was a crowd pressure that developed.
03:00People who were at the exit did not step out of there.
03:04People from the entry, the ingress continued coming in.
03:07Crowd pressure increased and then that resulted in a stampede.
03:12And unfortunately 17 people have died in this.
03:17Now the government and the administration, the police services, the fire services, the disaster management authorities,
03:23they're all trying to ensure that all who have been affected are brought into the hospital and that they get
03:31the best treatment possible.
03:33But the questions that are coming up, of course, are regarding what kind of security measures that were taken,
03:41what kind of crowd control efforts that were executed in these Pandals.
03:46Because remember, this is the first day of the Poojo.
03:50There are more days, there are many other Pandals and the fact that one rain led to a situation like
03:59this,
04:00this will be extremely worrisome for the government and the Pooja committees who are currently holding these multiple festivities across
04:10the city.
04:10Many of them, the Pandals, are huge, they are massive and they see a footfall of lacks.
04:18And that is something that these Pooja committees will have to review in terms of how many can they let
04:25in,
04:26how to ensure that the number of people coming in is balanced perfectly with the number of people stepping out
04:34of the Pandal.
04:35How many people are allowed to stay inside the Pandal at one point of given time?
04:40Because if the number of people inside increases and the crowd pressure is too much for the Pandal to hold,
04:48that can lead to worrisome situations.
04:51And that's exactly what we have seen in this instance as well.
04:54When an acute situation arrived, when there was a sudden rainfall, people reacted and that reaction led to a stampede.
05:06We are hearing that there are condolences pouring in from all quarters.
05:12All politicians are expressing their condolences.
05:19The Prime Minister has also expressed his grief.
05:24He has also announced compensation for those that are injured
05:30and also to the family of those that have died in this stampede.
05:36There are 17 people who have died in this stampede.
05:40And this is a huge number. Remember, this is an event that happens every year.
05:44It is an annual event. It is one of the most important time in the calendar of Kolkata
05:51or rather in the Bengal calendar.
05:53And devotees from all across the city make the beeline to different Pandals.
05:59They reserve these 3-4 days or rather evenings for stepping out.
06:05It is a celebration where they express their devotion.
06:09And more than that, it is also an opportunity for them to step out with their families, to go enjoy
06:15their culture.
06:16That is why when Indrajeet was bringing you a general overview of that area,
06:23you could see that it is not just the statue of Madhurga that is kept over there, that is the
06:31centre of attraction.
06:32It is also the stalls that are put there, the food stalls that are temporarily put up over there.
06:39So people are coming there for a good time.
06:42They are coming there to enjoy the ending of the Navratras.
06:46They are coming there for the most important key days of the Navratra,
06:50which are celebrated as the Pujo in Bengal.
06:54But such an incident now will cast a dark shadow across the celebrations in the city.
07:0317 deaths on the first day of the Pujo.
07:0517 deaths on the first day of the Pujo.
