01:00Finally going to win them a championship
01:02If you do the math behind what we've done
01:04No machine in history should be able to beat us
01:07If there's one thing that these three teams know
01:09It's that the road to Punkin' Chunkin' is never easy
01:20Punkin' Chunkin' is a unique all-American festival
01:23Where larger-than-life characters
01:27Innovation
01:30And engineering are pitched towards one goal
01:34Throwing a pumpkin further than anyone else
01:41It is a pastime steeped in history
01:45But every year new pioneers step forward
01:49Seeking to rewrite the rules of Chunkin' innovation
01:53This year in the Trebuchet division
01:56Patrick Imlay from Dayton, Ohio
01:58Is hoping to be one of them
01:59World record, that's our drama
02:01Until recently, Patrick was captain of Trebuchet team
02:05American Chucker
02:06With American Chucker so far
02:08We've come in second and third
02:10And those are both high-level losers in my mind
02:13I wanted to try a different design
02:16A new design that I feel like can win
02:19So Patrick cleared the decks to start again
02:22With a team made up of aerospace engineers
02:24From the military industry
02:25For some people, Chunkin' is part of their soul
02:28That's just how we operate
02:29We have Pete Hendricks, our main welder
02:32And fab, the animal
02:35We have Ken Moonlight Nairn
02:39We have Tim Green, who's a machine head
02:41Let's go!
02:43I'm the Chief Chunker
02:48Having found brave new soldiers
02:50To lead him to first place
02:52Patrick knew he needed a brave new idea
02:55The way the field is constantly stepping it up
02:57At the world championship
02:58You have to come up with something innovative
03:01Otherwise you're not going to come home with a trophy
03:04Patrick set about designing
03:06What he believes is the trebuchet of the future
03:10Chunkworks
03:10I would say that Chunkworks, the way we've designed it
03:13Is going to change the face of trebuchets
03:16Chunkworks will be about 25 feet tall
03:1821 foot arm
03:192,500 pounds of counterweight
03:22Nice little package
03:23But with just over a month to go until the chunk
03:27This team of engineers is still stuck in the testing phase
03:31We started off with software modeling
03:33We then went to a 1-12 scale model
03:35That's two-dimensional
03:36To be able to do the displacement analysis
03:38And then we're using this to make sure that our design
03:41Is actually going to perform when we build the full-size machine
03:44This is our Junior Chunkworks
03:46Junior Chunkworks will allow Patrick and his teams
03:49To test the design before committing it to 7,000 pounds of steel
03:52Folks, don't try this at home
03:55These are unpaid, untrained, chunking professionals
03:59That really don't know what they're doing
04:03The centerpiece of Chunkworks' design
04:05Is a linkage system at the top of the machine
04:08That allows the throwing arm to release the pumpkin further forward
04:12And faster than a traditional trebuchet
04:15With most trebuchets, the arm stops accelerating at this point
04:21With Chunkworks, we're going to continue to accelerate
04:24And go beyond that point
04:27This linkage system effectively functions as a gearbox
04:31Allowing the machine to start with slow movement
04:34And pick up speed
04:36Like a manual shift for a car or bicycle
04:40So what we're doing with this shape
04:42Is during the rotation of the throw
04:44We're starting with the slow gear
04:47Ending with the fast gear
04:48At the critical point of the pumpkin's release
04:51Chunkworks' throwing arm is traveling three times quicker
04:55Than a normal trebuchet
04:57If Patrick and his team can get it right
05:00They believe they will be number one in their first year
05:03But there's a long way to go
05:06Let's unveil the raw Chunkworks as it stands today
05:10As you can see, we have quite a bit of work to do
05:13Right now, it's 39 days to the chunk
05:15I seem to have an issue with schedules
05:18Our visionary leader has great ideas
05:21But no time management skills at all
05:24Today, they begin yet another testing phase
05:27We're going to do a series of tests
05:28Where we're going to vary the shape of the linkage
05:31To then come up with the optimal design
05:34The team is outfitting the test model
05:36With devices to measure acceleration forces
05:38So we have three accelerometers
05:40That we'll put on the machine
05:41And then we can see
05:43As the throw is occurring
05:45How the weight package is accelerating
05:47How the arm is accelerating
05:49And how much force the frame is taking
05:51Chunkworks is about to find out
05:53If their unorthodox trebuchet
05:55Is the design of the future
05:57Or destined for the scrapyard
06:08Patrick Imlay and his team of aerospace engineers
06:11Are attempting to revolutionize
06:12The punk and chunk and trebuchet division
06:15And today is the moment of truth
06:17For their new design
06:18You know, this is like busting open a champagne bottle
06:21You know, when you're sending the ship to sail
06:24You model it in software
06:26It doesn't mean it really is going to work that way
06:28So there's a lot of concerns there
06:30This is the inaugural chunk
06:32For Punkworks
06:33All right, go boys
06:39Chunkworks Jr. sends the pumpkin flying 400 feet
06:42If scaled up to the size of the real machine
06:45The shot would have gone 2,000 feet
06:48At this point, you know, 2,500 looks like
06:50Just a piece of cake
06:51We're yawning
06:52This is a no-brainer
06:53Yeah
06:543,000
06:543,000
06:555,000
06:565,000
06:575,000
06:57Do I hear 6,000?
06:596, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6
07:02But it's the information from the accelerometers
07:04That the team is really interested in
07:07We're seeing that we need to change the profile of the cam
07:11So we decrease the G's on the weight bar
07:14To put more energy into the pumpkin
07:15I think you're right on
07:17Getting the data, crunching the data
07:18Is essential for us to be able to make good decisions
07:22About what to do next
07:24But with the world championship just around the corner
07:27And no machine built
07:28Will the team's quest for perfection be their downfall?
07:32We still have a little bit of calculating to do
07:34Kicked ass out there, man
07:36Right, so we've got 39 days to the chunk
07:39So let's list out what we've got to do
07:42Got to build the tower
07:44282 man hours
07:45We've got a little bit of work to do
07:48Just a tiny bit
07:51But these aerospace engineers aren't looking back
07:54In pursuit of pumpkin chunking glory
07:57There's two schools of thought
07:59You can play it safe or you can take the risk
08:01With chunking, you've got to go a step farther than everybody else
08:04Chunk Works is going to be the team breaking the record
08:12The pumpkin chunking battlefield is full of grizzled veterans
08:19But in the youth division
08:23Fresh-faced chunking prodigies are itching to serve their elder statesman notice
08:28Galen, go get that other cinder block
08:30My name is Galen Kirkpatrick
08:32And I'm the captain of Team Whomping Willow
08:33My name is Hastings Greer
08:36And I am the Scotty of Team Whomping Willow
08:39While their classmates might be at the mall
08:4217-year-old high school students Galen and Hastings
08:45Like to spend their time a little differently
08:47Our whole team is sort of a unit at school
08:50Like we go and have Star Trek watching parties
08:52We hang out and talk about nerdy stuff
08:54We all play random chess variants
08:59Right now, saving the Starship Enterprise
09:02Has been put on the back burner
09:03And all their spare time is spent building their trebuchet
09:07I don't want you to catch on fire
09:09We're nuts
09:10This is not a typical teenager activity
09:13Whomping Willow isn't the boys' first foray into the world of Punkin' Chunkin'
09:18Hastings' dad is Trey Greer
09:19Captain of Trebuchet Team First in Fright
09:22And veteran of five world championships
09:24Awesome!
09:25Yeah, I think in some ways I did catch the bug on trebuchets from my dad
09:29After a while I said I want one
09:31For this year's chunk, these high achievers set themselves the task of building a machine to blitz the competition
09:38This year's basically a clean slate
09:40We've got a whole new machine
09:42Not just any new machine
09:43When completed, Whomping Willow will be 13 feet high, all steel, and drop a whopping 5,000 pounds of counterweight
09:51But for now, they're working with a scaled-down prototype to test their freshman design
09:58Hastings and Galen have based their machine around what they believe is a game-changing innovation
10:03Something never before seen at the chunk
10:06There's three ways you can make a trebuchet powerful
10:08You can make it efficient
10:10You can give it a whole lot of counterweight
10:12You can drop the counterweight really far
10:15There's always a trade-off
10:16And I was looking for a way to cheat that system
10:18And I found it with this flying weight
10:21Unlike a conventional trebuchet with one main counterweight
10:25Whomping Willow has a second smaller weight attached to its arm on a long rope
10:29The projectile gets going crazy fast
10:32Almost like a whip cracking
10:34That whipping action of the flying weight allows 70% of the energy to be transferred directly into the pumpkin
10:41Giving them 5 times more power than a conventional trebuchet
10:46We hope that it will set a new record in the youth division
10:49And possibly hit the 2,000 foot mark
10:52We want to scare the adults
10:55Like good techies, they turn to a computer simulator to verify their idea
10:59Here's the projectile, here's the weight, there's our counterweight in our arm
11:03It starts to come around
11:05Counterweight hits the bottom
11:07Flying weight comes over the top
11:08The projectile would have released by now
11:10And then the flying weight impacts the ground
11:14But 50 pounds of steel flying 40 feet in the air at high speed
11:18Poses an inherent danger that has Hastings and Galen worried
11:21The flying weight doesn't look like it's moving that fast
11:24But in real life it's going about 55 miles an hour
11:27When the flying weight moves over the top it's actually moving faster
11:30It's moving around 80 miles an hour
11:31If these guys show up in Delaware without having any practice shots behind them
11:36That is going to be terrifying
11:38Only putting their design to the test will tell them if they've created a pumpkin chunking game changer
11:44Or a lethal sledgehammer
11:46Three, two, one
11:54Teenage wunderkind Galen Kirkpatrick and Hastings Greer think they can revolutionize the trebuchet division with their new machine, Whomping Willow
12:03But the cornerstone of their design is a 50 pound flying weight that will travel 40 feet in the air
12:09at 80 miles an hour
12:10That flying weight's going to be pants poopingly terrifying
12:13We built this design so that we could work out some of the design kinks that you always get with
12:18any new machine
12:19On a smaller scale that's less likely to kill people
12:21All right, you guys think this will work?
12:23Of course it will
12:32Where'd it go?
12:34The team believes the projectile has flown approximately 250 feet
12:38But it's the debris left in its wake they are most worried about
12:42We just karate chopped a cinder block
12:44The flying weight has caused a support block left in the line of fire to crumble
12:49So that says something about the flying weight
12:52And when this is 50 pounds instead of 2 pounds, that's going to be pretty dramatic
12:57A 50 pound weight could cause some problems
12:59I think we might need to get a bigger pit
13:02Oh yeah
13:02Oh, it's terrifying
13:04Despite safety concerns, the team has high hopes for their design
13:08We will change the world
13:10Well, the way I see it is that this is a lot less dangerous than what they could be doing
13:15We've had a few minor things
13:18We've had one trip to the doctor
13:19It turned out okay
13:20They've got hard hats
13:21They've got first aid
13:22They've got people saying no move the wire over to that side
13:27Under the watchful eyes of family and friends
13:29A lot of welding and grinding stands between the teens
13:33And their record-breaking dreams
13:35I think any mother would give her heart and soul
13:38For kids to be so devoted to something that is so meaningful to them
13:42They're putting everything they got into it
13:44And there's a good chance that they're going to walk away with it all
13:47But we'll see
13:49We are quite behind
13:50And we're pushing very hard to get everything done
13:52Oh god, that's on fire
13:54This machine will fire
13:56That the pumpkin chunk in
13:57I guarantee you
13:59The counterweight is dropping
14:00And the pumpkin's going somewhere
14:04As I found out last year
14:06The torsion division
14:07Is an impressive display of raw mechanical power
14:12With the personalities to match
14:15That's what torsion is all about
14:20By day, Kim Moore is a suburban veterinarian in North Carolina
14:25Alright, good girl
14:26But in his spare time
14:28He takes on a whole new persona
14:31As a vet, my uniform is a lab coat
14:34As a pumpkin chunker
14:37My uniform is a Roman helmet
14:39For seven years, Kim and his son Jordan
14:41Have been engaged in a bloody battle
14:43For torsion, catapult glory
14:45I'm a warrior, so I have a battle prize
14:50To say that this is a second job for my dad
14:53Is probably not an understatement
14:56Team Roman Revenge has had to settle for second best
14:59More than they'd care to remember
15:01We put our heart and soul into this machine
15:03And it always seems to be just a little bit less
15:06Than what's necessary to win
15:08In 2010, Jucky beat us by 11 feet
15:14I mean, it was heartbreaking
15:16I simply stopped saying their name
15:21Because it's bad hoo-choo for me
15:23Despite victory being snatched from them countless times
15:27Kim remains committed to the traditional design
15:30Of a torsion catapult
15:31One of the things I'm really most proud of
15:34With Roman Revenge
15:35Is that we are a pure catapult
15:39Torsion catapults get their power from twisted rope
15:43The throwing arm is placed in what's called a rope bundle
15:46When the arm is winched back
15:48It produces thousands of foot-pounds of torque
15:51Which propels the arm forward
15:53In recent years, Punkin Chunkin has seen the development
15:56Of compound torsion catapults
15:58That deviate from traditional design
16:01We don't have cables and cams and pulleys
16:06It's kind of like the difference between a long bow
16:09And a compound bow
16:10You know, anybody can pull a compound bow
16:12It takes a real man to pull a long bow
16:16But this year, Kim and Jordan think they've found a way
16:19To bring their machine into the 21st century
16:21While staying true to their purest roots
16:24You ready, Nat?
16:26We have quite a laundry list of improvements
16:28That we've made from last year
16:30We've strengthened our front cross beam
16:32We've strengthened our persuader
16:34We've put in a new winch
16:36Kim and Jordan's new winch can hold 50% more tension
16:39Or torque than their previous winch
16:42The capability of this winch is actually
16:45On the order of 360,000 foot-pounds of torque
16:48Which, just to put it in perspective
16:50My diesel F-250 Super Duty
16:53Has something on the order of 700 foot-pounds of torque
16:58From its engine
16:59And we're looking at hundreds of thousands
17:02Of foot-pounds of torque
17:05But Kim and Jordan believe one innovation
17:07Will change Punkin' Chunkin' forever
17:10It's just going to be the most awesome piece of technology
17:13That anybody in catapulting has ever seen
17:26After finishing in second place to Team Chucky over and over again
17:31Torsion Team Roman Revenge has pulled out all the stops
17:34In hope of finally claiming Punkin' Chunkin' glory
17:38The sacrifices my dad makes for this catapult is astronomical
17:42Ah, shoot!
17:43The hopes and dreams of father and son
17:45Now rest on a high-tech innovation that's been years in the making
17:49We have our new throwing arm under construction
17:53And this, we feel, is a game-changer
17:56It's been engineered, literally, from top to bottom
18:00This is an aluminum base that we've mated to a carbon fiber tube
18:06The strength-to-weight ratio of carbon fiber
18:09Is approximately five times higher than aluminum
18:12Look at this
18:14I can pick this thing up myself
18:16You know?
18:18That's pretty impressive
18:22The reason that's beneficial is sort of analogous to swinging a golf club
18:26Versus swinging a baseball bat
18:28So the lighter it is, especially out at your extreme distances
18:33The easier it is to move
18:34Hello in there! Hello up there!
18:39According to engineering student Jordan's calculations
18:42Which simplifies to the radius squared times the density
18:46Roman Revenge's new arm will move five times faster than their previous arm
18:51I multiply the speed of the pumpkin at 600 miles an hour times five
18:55You're talking a 3,000 mile per hour projectile
18:58I just don't think there's anybody out there that's going to be able to compete with us
19:01But now they need to prove it
19:06We're into lunchtime now
19:08Oh!
19:09It hasn't moved yet
19:11We have a longer arm
19:12We have a lighter arm
19:13And a design that has never actually been done before
19:16It's just a few things
19:18What could go wrong?
19:20Two, you're in
19:21Nice to have some help
19:23We have put countless hours of time and effort and dedication into creating, designing, building this throwing arm
19:32So it's a big deal
19:33All right, safety off
19:35Inaugural throw
19:37Fire in the hole
19:39In 3, 2, 1
19:45Oh my God!
19:50Woo!
19:51Did you see that?
19:53Did you see that?
19:54That was awesome
19:57Woo!
19:58Roman Revenge!
20:01With their rope bundle twisted to only 25% of its potential power
20:07Kim and Jordan estimate the machine has thrown the pumpkin 3,000 feet
20:12Only a few hundred feet off their personal best
20:15Now that's what I'm talking about
20:17Most importantly, their brand new carbon fiber aluminum arm didn't flinch
20:22We just proved everything that we wanted to prove with that throw
20:27They're so confident, they're not just setting their sights on first place of the torsion division
20:35They're going after the air cannons
20:38Our competition isn't that other team, it's the air cannons
20:43When we've cracked the 4,000 foot barrier, we're a force to contend with
20:48If you do the math behind what we've done, no machine in history should be able to beat us
20:54I'm never going to settle for second place
20:57I'm going to keep driving, I'm going to keep pushing
21:00We're going to keep going after it
21:01Woo!
21:04The final countdown to Punkin' Chunkin' 2012 has begun
21:10All across the country, teams are racing the clock
21:13Oh God, that's on fire
21:14Putting the finishing touches on their machines
21:16Backwards, turn around
21:18Oh, that was horrible
21:19The sacrifices are great
21:22The rewards, even greater
21:25Get ready, America
21:27Fire in the hole
21:28This is going to be epic
21:30It's going to be epic
