00:31I got lost out here in the fog before. It wasn't a snowstorm, it was a fog. It takes away
00:36the visibility and you can't know if you're going straight. And I thought I was, I kept veering one way,
00:42one way to keep from going and then I ended up out here and I was headed for the back
00:46bay. I hate to tell them stories on people, they don't, they quit riding with me.
00:55I know these grounds like the back of my hand. I've been traveling in open skiff for over 40 years,
01:00but I can see where it's a problem.
01:05It only takes one bad move there and there you are, you're done.
01:22The hunting season has closed. Right now the only thing going is trapping.
01:29A lot of people, they frown on it. They're not really into trapping. They think it's inhumane and everything, but
01:35you overpopulate the critters and mother nature, she thins them out with disease.
01:40So, I'd rather take them, have a good fur, and at the same time I'm thinning them down. But I
01:46don't take them all. I only take a few.
01:54Oh, I won't be a carpenter, will I? Well, my first wife is the one that really got me involved
02:01in this fur business. She's the reason that I know what beautiful things you can make out of fur and
02:07they're durable and they're sensible.
02:09In this country, you've got to keep warm. And that's why the animals have such good fur, because it's cold
02:16in Alaska and it takes cold, cold, cold to make the best fur.
02:22It's ready to fire. This is one of my favorite sets there. They come running up through here and one
02:28of them goes in. That's it.
02:31So, I'm going to get rolling here and burn the daylight. And if I have trouble, then it'll be dark
02:37and I don't want that.
02:38It could be a bad deal.
02:47You always have to look down the road when you do something. I'm going to do something now, which is
02:52going to help me indefinitely into the future.
03:06Nice, fresh, frozen sausage meat. I'm going to take this vacuum shield meat out that big buck that Matt shot.
03:19And I'm going to cut in him with a generous amount of pork and basically I'm going to double or
03:23almost quadruple my meat.
03:27It's one thing to step out into the woods and actually kill an animal. It's another thing to take care
03:34of it properly so you don't waste any of it.
03:36Sam Carlson must keep a stockpile of meat to survive in port protection.
03:41But an unsuccessful hunting season has forced him to rely on venison that his son Matt gave him and pork
03:47that he shipped in.
03:50It is crucial that Sam combines and smokes the meats so they last through the winter.
03:55But first, he'll need to repair his smoker.
04:00I haven't fired up the smokehouse since the fall when I smoked a little bit of salmon.
04:06And I noticed that my racks needed a good overhaul. I need to build some new smoke racks.
04:11You know what really helps when you're building? You can actually see what you're doing.
04:16I build a lot of things by braille.
04:25Making a smokehouse rack is pretty simple.
04:30You just need a frame and some wire mesh. Stretch it over the frame, staple it down, you're good to
04:36go.
04:47Yeah, those are a pair of twins. Mama got killed by wolves two years ago.
04:57In the winter, they hang out here quite a bit.
05:00I'd like to think that the does that live right here, they're very happy that the wolves don't come in
05:05and eat them very often.
05:07I think that's one of the reasons they hang out here so much is that they be safe.
05:17I am looking forward to having tasty sausage.
05:24I just love being out there in the water and even back when I was a kid.
05:32Well, there we are, Junior. Nothing easy about these boats, let me tell you.
05:39Curly Leach relies on his fishing boat, Lil Pelican, for his livelihood and port protection.
05:45But the engine needs new batteries, and to complete vital maintenance to the hull before the King Salmon season,
05:51he must use his skiff to haul the boat to the grid.
05:54With the tide high, the time to move the vessel is now.
05:59I can't see.
06:01The grid is a deal where you put your boat up on it and you let the tide go out
06:06from underneath of it.
06:07Once the tide goes out, you can get underneath the boat and work on the bottom.
06:13Junior, move. Move. Move. Move.
06:17Just doing this with the skiff is a pain in the butt, because I'm doing it by myself.
06:21And, uh, kind of nerve-wracking.
06:28Shut up.
06:30But we got her done.
06:36Fishing season is almost upon us, and it's pretty critical that I get my boat in tip-top shape for
06:41the season.
06:42And, uh, I'm gonna start by working on the bottom, getting it cleaned up.
06:48Start scraping here.
06:50Got to get my little girl taken care of.
06:53Out here, everything, from your house, boats, skiffs, whatever, you know,
06:57especially if they're not taken care of and maintained.
07:00Mother Nature has a way of eating them up a lot faster in this country.
07:05Well, I've got a lot of fish with this. I have no idea how many, but lots and lots.
07:12The boat is very crucial to my lifestyle.
07:15I mean, that's how I make my money, and it's pretty important to keep it in tip-top shape.
07:20What grows on the bottom in that is, uh, generally mussels and barnacles and sea urgence,
07:26and you gotta get that stuff scraped off.
07:30Not only do they slow you down, but they're, uh, it's not good for the boat.
07:38Well, I got this thing all finished up.
07:40Now all I gotta do is wait for it to float so I can get it back over to the
07:44dock and work on the engine.
07:50I'd say one of the key factors of happiness when it comes to living off-grid in Alaska
07:56is knowing how to use your environments to best effect.
08:03Digging all this free power.
08:05I'm still working towards my first full year on solar power.
08:10Recently, I just got up a nice 10 solar panel array,
08:13and, uh, I've got three trees that are cutting out about, well, at least a couple hours of direct sunlight.
08:18Those three trees gotta drop.
08:21So as soon as I, uh, get them out of the way there, I'm, uh, I'm sure my batteries will
08:25be a lot happier.
08:29Well, I'm gonna go ahead and, uh, get my guidelines set up here.
08:35That cedar right there is what I'm worried about, it coming back and getting caught in that saddle there.
08:39I wanna make sure it comes this way and ends up in the bay.
08:43It is finally time to drop these buggers.
08:59Just need a little more...
09:07Oh, .
09:15Right where I bloody wanted it.
09:17Yeah.
09:19That's gonna be a lot more daylight on the panels already.
09:23Nice.
09:24The second tree, it's a real nice straight spruce.
09:28It's pretty much growing straight up, so I think I should be able to just put a good cut in
09:31the face of it there
09:32and, uh, drop her right where I want her.
09:49Two down, one to go.
09:53Tree number three.
09:55The possible problem child.
09:57Oh, man, this one's got me sweating.
10:00It's the one that's actually closest to the house, so it's always an uncertainty.
10:04You never actually know where they're gonna go until they start falling.
10:07This one here could cost me half the house if she goes in the wrong direction.
10:12Boy, you better go the right way.
10:17I gotta get a tension wire down to the beach, pull her over that way.
10:22My biggest concern, really, is the wind.
10:25I do need a good anchor point on the beach to make sure that they get pulled the way I
10:28want to,
10:29but even more crucial than that is the fact that I don't want to be dropping it at any wind,
10:34because that tree, I do not want to make friends with in my living room.
10:50I have to climb where I'm coming in.
10:51Here is for hoping...
10:52Ooh.
10:54Three or four?
11:05You are a rough type of gritter?
11:07We'll be out of a pocket
11:08One years ago tons of work Grover.
11:08One year ago you asked a quest to not fall.
11:50Not one to waste resources, Dave Squibb will now mill the trees he has felled and build a retaining wall
11:57where they once stood. The wall will protect his homestead from erosion.
12:13This kind of lumber out here may not cost you much currency other than gas, but it's a far cry
12:19from free. Here we go, slab one.
12:23That's one of the joys of living out here. You can live like a king off of pennies, but you
12:28better have some elbow grease in the kitty and a little bit of gumption behind you because it may not
12:33cost money, but nothing's free.
12:38Got three nice slabs. Hopefully I might be able to use half for each step that I'm going up. This
12:44is the plan I came up with. Hopefully it'll work out like it did in my head.
12:49It's a good thing, being self-sufficient. It's almost imperative if you live out here, you learn how to do
12:56stuff yourself.
12:59I got to go look and see if there's a place I really want to go. Plenty of crabapple there.
13:07I have a very efficient smokehouse. It only takes two little trays of wood to put enough smoke on the
13:14product.
13:15I'm going to go a few miles down the beach where I know there's a good stand of crabapple next
13:20to a creek.
13:20I think it's my preferred wood to smoke anything with.
13:26Navigating in this part of the world, it takes a lot of local knowledge.
13:31Basically I've hit every rock that you can hit between here and Wrangell.
13:50This is what I'm looking for.
13:54I'm going to fill my bucket full of nice little pieces of wood.
13:58Suitable for the smokehouse.
14:07I remember as a young boy, my uncle used to smoke a lot of fish. In fact, a lot of
14:12my smoke lore comes from him.
14:16Crabapple was my uncle's favorite, and he just preferred it, and I prefer crabapple.
14:27Wintertime is the optimum time for harvesting your smokewood, because you don't get a bunch of sap.
14:33You get a much cleaner burn, less bitter flavor, and it's highly desirable for the smokehouse.
14:43It's a great time of the year to be processing meat.
14:46In the worst case scenario, if I lose my freezer, or if my power goes out, this smoked meat will
14:53last basically indefinitely.
14:55Of course I have to be a damn billy goat to get back to the boat.
15:01Let's go make some sausage.
15:06We're all pleased with the wintertime, you know.
15:09They have a lot of songs and stuff about it, but it's not. I know better.
15:15It's dangerous in a manner there.
15:24I'm going to go and try to get a few martin for a little bit of cash flow.
15:30And when I was out scouting there, I did see some sign of the otter there, and I thought, well,
15:34I might as well try to catch one.
15:36So that's what I'm going to do.
15:38There's a big difference between the two otters.
15:41Land otter lives on the land, but he goes in the salt water.
15:44The sea otter, he lives in the salt water, but he really doesn't go on the land.
15:48Well, I see where an otter went up on this island right here.
15:52It's a perfect spot for them.
15:54They climb out and they get under the tree there, and they feel safe to eat whatever they got.
15:58You can see the tracks there.
16:01The otters, they like to slide around.
16:03See that?
16:03Looked like he took his shit up there, too.
16:05They do that, marking their territory.
16:08But it isn't really a place where I can make a set.
16:12You put your trap out in the open there, and then that's what you got, a trap out in the
16:15open.
16:16So I'm going to take my trap someplace else and have a better percentage chance.
16:23I'm not legal to touch a sea otter, but land otters, it's legal to harvest them.
16:31Well, where I put the land otter traps is a place where I've trapped before, and I have caught
16:38them, land otters there.
16:40So I'm quite confident that if they haven't been wiped out, or if the food hasn't all been ate, that
16:48I should be able to catch one.
16:52But that's the whole deal now.
16:54I've got to put this where I think that critter is going to go through it.
16:57But I know the otter trail goes right there, so I'm going to see if I can set it right
17:02in here.
17:04Now, these traps are deadly.
17:06I got caught in one of these traps before.
17:09I got a lot of respect for them.
17:11Yeah, well, I wasn't paying attention.
17:13I did something, and wham!
17:15And I jerked my hand out and had two purple marks on there.
17:20Yeah, only got me once, though.
17:22I learned, I guess.
17:25And it's ready to fire now.
17:32I got one more trap to set, but hopefully we'll come up with a win-win-win here.
17:44Well, I'm kind of discouraged with the way my season's been going here.
17:48I'm not catching much, not making any money.
17:55But the spots I'm going to, I caught Martin there over the years, lots of them.
17:59And I'm going to try to keep the drive to keep going.
18:03It's easy to quit.
18:04I mean to tell you, I'd like to quit right now, how this is going for me.
18:08But I can't do that.
18:12We've got to have a lot of patience, and luck.
18:15Luck is a big deal here.
18:16And skill is, all you can do is skill, but there's some luck involved.
18:25Oh, .
18:31I'll be darned.
18:57Right in front of me, there's a dead deer.
18:59I saw the wolf run on the side of the road, run out in the brush.
19:03I know what happened here.
19:04Could have got a shot, but I was too slow, I guess too old.
19:10Well, a wolf killed this deer here this morning.
19:15It hasn't been very long.
19:17I've just seen that wolf, one of them.
19:18And I'm not sure how many wolves there is with this bunch.
19:22But he ate the whole deer.
19:26Yeah, well, he killed it right over here.
19:30And it was quite a fight.
19:32Tore the guts out of it.
19:33That's where they go first.
19:35They drug it around here.
19:36Ate and ate and ate.
19:38Munched the whole deer down.
19:41There's an ear.
19:43I wonder why he didn't want the ear.
19:48Deer ear.
19:50Man, boy, they just decimate.
19:52Look at this.
19:55Yeah, this is like just one wolf.
19:57There might have been 60 pounds of meat there or something.
20:01And I can't imagine Trapper eating a whole deer at one setting.
20:05So, but this wolf, he must have ate 25, 30 pounds of meat
20:09and then took a nap and was coming back to get more.
20:12So, he's a hungry wolf, but not now.
20:15He's full, fat, and he's laying out there laughing probably.
20:21Wolves are pretty scary for a lot of people.
20:25He's not as big, but the wolves will take the bear down.
20:28So, there you go.
20:32It just don't happen every day that you find them like this.
20:36But when it does, you have to take advantage.
20:39So, I'm going to take some of this and use it for martin bait.
20:46I mean, the martin will come here and sniff all around here.
20:50But the birds will be here too.
20:52Somehow, they know right away.
20:54And they come here and clean it up.
20:58And you can hear them around.
21:00And if you probably look, there's...
21:04You hear that raven?
21:08He's telling all ravens, hey, lunchtime.
21:12Well, I'm going to take advantage of this situation
21:18because this might turn around my martin season here,
21:21having this wolf kill.
21:22I've caught a lot of martin around wolf kills before.
21:25That's really a prime spot
21:27because this smell permeates the area.
21:31They just keep coming to it.
21:33They can't help it.
21:34It's like me going by a bar.
21:36I can't help it.
21:37I got to go have a beer.
21:39They want to eat.
21:41The idea is that the martin is going to come here
21:45because he smells this venison.
21:48And that he's going to come in here and stand up,
21:51be looking up here, not down here,
21:54and be excited that he's getting a free meal.
21:57But it's not free.
21:59He's putting his foot in the trap, I hope,
22:02and he'll be here waiting for me.
22:04and then we can all smile
22:07except for the martin and the deer.
22:17Most of us do live a subsistence lifestyle around here,
22:20and, you know, it's not for the faint of heart.
22:22It's a lot of hard work.
22:28Nice and tight.
22:32It gives me more control that way.
22:37Let the fun begin there.
22:40Curly has returned to the grid
22:42to transport his fishing boat to the dock
22:44for engine maintenance.
22:45But guiding the large boat using a small skiff
22:48will be challenging in high tide,
22:50and he must be careful not to damage his vessel
22:53or his upcoming fishing season and livelihood
22:55would be at risk.
22:57Hard to see on the other side of the boat
23:02helping out hit any of these other boats
23:04and have some pissed-off people.
23:07It's kind of tricky getting my boat in where it's at.
23:09It's kind of on the back side of the dock,
23:11and you've got to get around the corner
23:13without hitting any of the other boats,
23:15and it's just kind of a small area that I got.
23:18One way or the other might take us a time or two,
23:21but we'll figure it out.
23:25Hard to see where I'm...
23:26See where I'm at.
23:35Dang it.
23:41Well, that wasn't good.
23:46Right again.
23:49Kind of a little nervous about the boat
23:51getting cattywampus in there.
23:53You know, it's just me,
23:54and it's pretty difficult at times, you know,
23:57to get it maneuvered in there.
24:02I guess I'll just point it right at the dock
24:06and let the dock stop it.
24:14There we go.
24:18Hope for the best.
24:23I'm in there a little fast.
24:34There we go.
24:38I'm in there a little fast.
24:50We'll use that boat for leverage.
24:53I was a little bit concerned when I came in.
24:55I kind of bumped the boat ahead of me,
24:57but it's a big old aluminum herring scowl.
25:00It ain't going to do nothing to that.
25:01I thought my boat's going to give long before it.
25:07Little Pelican isn't going to the graveyard just yet.
25:10I really need to get fishing,
25:12so I got to work on my boat.
25:15I got a lot of work to do on it,
25:17and it's pretty critical
25:19that I get this thing running.
25:21and we made it
25:25by the skin of her teeth, though.
25:35Living anywhere in the bush in Alaska
25:37is an interesting proposition
25:39when it comes to your groceries.
25:42You can't just walk down to your local supermarket
25:44and buy a piece of fresh meat.
26:02I could say it honestly
26:04that most of the people out here
26:06know that I make pretty good sausage.
26:08I don't know the technical terms
26:10for sausage connoisseurs,
26:12but if there's a term,
26:14you're looking at it.
26:17Sam is making sausages
26:18out of the venison meat from his son
26:20and the reserved pork meat
26:22that he shipped into Port Protection.
26:24Once they are ready,
26:25they will be smoked,
26:26which will preserve the meats
26:28so they will last through the winter.
26:32Kind of mix this stuff together.
26:36The pork that I ordered,
26:37I ordered it well ahead of time,
26:39at least 30 or 40 pounds of it,
26:41and then you cut that in with your venison,
26:43and it stretches out the venison,
26:45and it gives you a much higher quality product.
26:49It's usually very economical
26:51other than the fact that you have to have it shipped out
26:53and you have to fly in on an airplane.
26:56I think a mix of venison and pork
26:59is probably the best sausage on the planet,
27:01but I would say the secret to good sausage
27:03is having the correct amount of fat.
27:14Basically, this will be like sandwich material
27:16or, you know, party material.
27:18You have some guests over,
27:19you might want to turn them on to a tasty sausage.
27:25Almost the end of the line,
27:26almost ready to put stuff in the smokehouse.
27:28Getting there.
27:32With the leftover pork that I'm going to have,
27:34I'm going to do some old-timers bacon.
27:36I've got my coarse-ground pork
27:38for my old-timers bacon.
27:41I discovered how to make it almost by mistake.
27:47You know, I had some leftover pork,
27:49and I thought,
27:49well, maybe I'll just try to make some Spam.
27:53Because, you know, everybody likes Spam.
27:57And I'll smoke it.
27:58I'll make a big loaf of this stuff,
28:00and the final product,
28:02when it was done and we browned it in the pan,
28:04I went, well, this is just like, you know,
28:07frickin' bacon, but better.
28:09Universal comfort food coming up.
28:13There we go.
28:16Let that sit for a few minutes
28:17while I'm getting the smokehouse fired up.
28:23I consider myself a pretty good smoker.
28:28You want to put a good, heavy smoke on it.
28:32Basically, you want all smoke and no heat.
28:36Smoked meat, smoking fish,
28:39any type of smoking,
28:40it's a very ancient art
28:43of preserving your product.
28:45A ton of science behind it.
28:49Essentially, you're using the heat
28:51from the smokewood
28:52to gently draw out the moisture
28:55and remove as much moisture as you can
28:57from your product
28:57without removing too much.
29:00With a little bit of salt
29:01and a lot of smoke,
29:03you can make a piece of meat last indefinitely.
29:10Oh, and let the magic begin.
29:15Out here, you just have to really pay attention
29:17to your surroundings.
29:19You have to understand your national environments.
29:23You have to make those environments work for you
29:26as opposed to against you.
29:37I'm going to go ahead and roll on out
29:39with a couple of skiffs here
29:40and pick up some nice, sharp gravel.
29:41It makes for a good, packed surface
29:43and it locks together well.
29:46Squibb is building a retaining wall
29:48that will protect his homestead from erosion.
29:50To do so, he will head out
29:53to collect jagged gravel
29:54that will aid the stability
29:55of the wall's foundation.
29:57But he must keep a vigilant eye on the weather
30:00as rough seas could make for a perilous journey.
30:06Yeah, got a little more swell out here
30:09than I was hoping for
30:10when I was standing on my front porch this morning.
30:14But I'll just keep the load kind of light.
30:18Hopefully, I won't run into any trouble.
30:26All right.
30:28I chose this particular spit
30:30because the swell doesn't come in here all the way.
30:35It doesn't roll the gravel
30:36and make it real round
30:37so it locks a lot better.
30:38It's sharper gravel.
30:41And it works out much better
30:45for tamping down
30:48for a nice, well-locked-together surface.
30:54Unfortunately,
30:56the weather's up a little bit
30:57so I'm not going to be able to get this
31:00as heavily loaded as I was hoping.
31:06There's actually been people out here
31:08who've lost their life
31:10to overloading their vessel.
31:12A couple of...
31:14Well, one wood skip in particular
31:17coming right around the corner.
31:19Got it too full.
31:21Took on water.
31:23Went down with the boat.
31:27Got a lot of tough folks around here,
31:29but nobody's tougher than Mother Nature.
31:32So...
31:33She calls the shots.
31:38We play by her playbook.
31:48Okay.
31:54I might have packed this skiff a little heavy.
32:00It's really starting to kind of lump up out front here.
32:05I'll give it a try,
32:06but I'll keep the blade at the ready
32:07just in case.
32:14There's a good bit of short chop going on here.
32:23It's pretty dicey, man.
32:26I'm afraid I'm going to bust a line.
32:32It's pretty dicey, man.
32:34I'm afraid I'm going to bust a line.
32:39A lot more chop on the surface there
32:41than I was hoping for hauling this kind of weight.
32:45I may well have overdone it here.
32:49But if the tide and the wind are working against you,
32:51that can be a long, miserable ride home.
33:02That's nice.
33:06We didn't have to go through too much turmoil
33:08to get back into safe waters,
33:10so...
33:11It all worked out.
33:13I've probably procured
33:15three tons of rock and gravel.
33:19Go ahead and get this unloaded.
33:21Tomorrow I'll start...
33:22start building.
33:27We can basically create our own destinies out here.
33:31We can forge our own path.
33:40Well, let's see what we got here.
33:42Freezing cold out here,
33:45but I have some wonderful, tasty treats.
33:52This stuff looks absolutely perfect.
33:54Perfectamundo.
34:00Go out and get the old-timers bacon.
34:04It's a technique I've developed
34:06for making bacon that's very tender.
34:08And the reason we call it old-timers bacon
34:10is because if you're getting long in the tooth
34:12and you can't chew your food as well,
34:15it's a lot easier to eat.
34:18Nice stuff.
34:20I'm really, really happy with these new racks.
34:25See, this stuff is perfectly edible right now.
34:27In fact, I might even try a slice.
34:30Very lean bacon,
34:31even though there's plenty of fat in there.
34:37That is the stuff.
34:39No doubt in my mind,
34:40that's some of the best bacon on the planet.
34:42This will definitely make the rest of the winter
34:44much nicer.
34:53Nature makes things very possible for us.
34:56She makes it tough for us.
34:58It just is a hard life.
35:00That's all there is to it.
35:05Trapping is kind of just the start
35:06to get me out here.
35:07That's not the whole deal.
35:10I like to come out here
35:12just to spend my time in the woods here,
35:14in the forest.
35:15You can see the ducks.
35:17You can see the seals.
35:19Everything there is,
35:20it's just there for you to watch.
35:24Gary Molberger is heading back
35:26to check his marten traps
35:27in hopes of securing needed fur.
35:30But first, he'll need to see
35:32if he's had any success
35:33with his land otter traps
35:34as the season for otter
35:36is coming to an end.
35:39Well, there's nothing here.
35:40My trap's just like I left it.
35:43So, the agony of defeat here.
35:45If it was the easiest,
35:46just go set a trap, catch one.
35:49Everybody have otter on their couch.
35:52That don't slow me down.
35:54Now, I'm going to keep on trucking here,
35:56see what I can do.
35:59But I'm going to pull this trap.
36:00This set isn't going to produce,
36:02so we'll see what happens on the next set.
36:11Well, another skunk there.
36:12I would have bet money I'd catch one here,
36:14but I would have lost.
36:19Well, there's no sign of any otter tracks
36:22or anything here.
36:23They haven't made their circuit, I guess,
36:25and they're someplace else.
36:27So, I'm going to put the rest of my time
36:29in on the marten traps.
36:35The problem with not catching
36:36is that you start doubting yourself
36:38and your gear,
36:40and it just isn't a real pleasant thought.
36:43The agony of defeat sneaks up on you.
36:46You have to fight it off.
36:47It can't be the problem.
36:49You have to just keep on going.
36:51You look at it and think to yourself,
36:53well, at least I get to come out here and do this.
36:57The next set I'm going to go to here
36:59is the highest elevation trap I have out now.
37:04Higher up you get, the better off you are,
37:06and that's where the marten are at Snowline.
37:10This trap is the one I put the fresh bait on.
37:13The deer kill's right there.
37:15I'm hoping that something has come around
37:17and inspected this,
37:18but I got high hopes for this set,
37:20and I'm going to see if there's something there.
37:30Well, you can see nothing's been here
37:32chewing on it or nothing.
37:33The trap is still set.
37:35I'm going to spring it.
37:38Leave the bait for the critters.
37:42I got one more trap,
37:43so hopefully there'll be something there.
37:46No more chances.
37:49For what's going on here
37:51and me having the perfect bait,
37:54setting around a wolf kill,
37:56if there's no marten there,
37:58it doesn't matter how good your bait is
37:59or how good you are,
38:01if they're all caught already,
38:03well, you won't catch anything.
38:16Well, we got one.
38:31Well, we got one.
38:34The marten in the trap is alive still.
38:37He hasn't been in there too long.
38:39I'll have to dispatch him.
38:42I'm not real happy about it.
38:43It's part of my job.
38:46Someday I'll be too old to do this stuff,
38:48and I'll think back about what a **** it was.
38:59It's a nice-looking marten.
39:02So that's all there is to it.
39:06Once I catch a marten there,
39:08it makes me feel like I still know what I'm doing.
39:12I still got it.
39:13There's no doubt about it.
39:14Just bring it on.
39:21I'm always amazed at people living in what I call
39:24the right-angle perspective,
39:25where they see nothing but the man-made veneer of the world.
39:29Living out here,
39:30you actually understand
39:31how much we impact the world around us.
39:35I've taken down these trees.
39:38This hill right here has a really good grade to it.
39:40If I don't secure this hillside,
39:42it's going to erode quickly.
39:44I'm going to go ahead
39:46and carve in some steps here,
39:48make a retaining wall,
39:50tear it on up.
39:51It'll keep the hill in place,
39:52and it'll make coming down here
39:54into the cove a lot easier on icy days.
40:00Chipping a little ice is definitely on the menu.
40:06Frozen.
40:07Bloody.
40:09Solid.
40:10Solid.
40:14I got a nice route I can come up behind here
40:17to anchor in my step.
40:20Yep.
40:22A little bit of elbow grease,
40:23a whole lot of planning.
40:26Should work out well for me in the long run.
40:39It is quite a lot of grunt work,
40:40though I may be cringing by the time I get to the couch this evening.
40:44I'll be able to enjoy it for many years to come.
40:47and before you know it,
40:56it'll be pretty damn solid.
41:02With these trees gone now,
41:04I'm not going to have to worry about the erosion
41:06I was awfully concerned about.
41:08Low tech,
41:10but really quite formidable
41:11when it comes to, uh,
41:13longevity.
41:20Best part about living in port protection
41:22near the ocean is, you know,
41:24the abundance of wildlife and fish.
41:27Doesn't get any better than that.
41:34Good growling at everyone.
41:39Now that I got the hull clean,
41:40I got to get this boat up and running
41:42and get it in tip-top shape,
41:44make sure it's not going to break down.
41:50Well,
41:51battery's out,
41:52the new one's in.
41:54Then I'll see if it'll fire up here.
42:05Pelican rides again.
42:07How about that?
42:10I think the little pelican
42:12has a lot of years left in it.
42:13It just needs a little bit of TLC is all.
42:25If you live in a world
42:27where you have supermarkets,
42:28you don't pay too much attention
42:29to stuff like this.
42:30In this part of the world,
42:33this is like gold.
42:35Yo, there you are.
42:36Howdy, howdy.
42:37It's a good thing you showed up.
42:40Oh, that looks good.
42:41Yes.
42:42My son, Matt,
42:43gets a fair portion of it
42:45because of his generous gift.
42:48I'm going to turn you on
42:49to a stick of this.
42:51I'm sure a little shiply.
42:54We'll, uh...
42:54Oh, yeah.
42:55You'll probably have to fire for it.
42:57No, you're not wrong.
42:57If you're not Kaylee,
42:58you're going to be outnumbered.
43:00All right.
43:02Catch you on the rebound.
43:03Have a good evening.
43:10Just about every task
43:11we have out here
43:12is dirty, painful,
43:13or back-breaking
43:14in some aspect.
43:15I think that's something
43:16a lot of modern society
43:17has lost.
43:18How to come about a fix
43:19with what you've got on hand.
43:24I'm very happy
43:25that I caught
43:26one more Martin there.
43:27Sometimes a guy goes
43:29a long time
43:29without catching any.
43:30He tries to second-guess himself,
43:32figure out why or what,
43:33or what have you.
43:35As it is,
43:36I'm pretty confident
43:37at what I do,
43:38so, uh,
43:39it's not going to kick me
43:41in the butt
43:41if I don't win.
43:43Yeah, well,
43:44as long as I feed
43:44my cat and the dog
43:45and have a beer
43:47time to time,
43:48then,
43:49heck,
43:49I'm a happy camper there.
43:53I'm a happy camper there.
43:54I'm a happy camper there.
43:58I'm a happy camper there.
43:58I'm a happy camper there.
43:59I'm a happy camper there.
43:59I'm a happy camper there.
43:59I'm a happy camper there.
43:59I'm a happy camper there.
