We caught up with Julianne Moore, Jesse Eisenberg, Patrick Fabian and Becca Suskauer at the UK premiere of The Debut, closing out the BFI London Film Festival 2026!

Jesse reveals why The Debut might be his favourite project yet, (he wrote it just for Julianne) why he needs a break before his next film and how he ended up singing along to Jesus Christ Superstar in London's West End!

Julianne reflects on the awards buzz surrounding her performance, becoming a mother-in-law after her son's recent wedding and shares some heartfelt advice for anyone working hard towards their big break. (It's to do with a mouse!)

Plus, Patrick Fabian reveals his dream musical role, while Becca Suskauer shares her musical favourites and brings a little The Devil Wears Prada energy to the red carpet!

The Debut stars Julianne Moore as a woman who unexpectedly discovers a new passion for performing in a community theatre production.

00:00Like how does a mouse chew through a wall like one bite at a time? I'm not bragging
00:04This is an embarrassing thing. Well, hello. Oh my gosh. You're gonna get me going. The hazel-eyed ADHD quirky
00:10girl
00:13Very well, I know very exciting. We're so happy for them
00:20I'm not annoyed you are. You've got your Oscar on the masterpiece already, but does the Oscars ever die out?
00:25You know, do you cut the noise a little bit? Because everyone's saying it about this one. Thank you. Listen
00:30We're so grateful that people are responding to this film. We all loved it so much. We loved making it
00:35I I think Jesse is just an extraordinary talent really really and so
00:40So we're just happy that people are are laughing and really enjoying the film
00:43And it's all about glitz and glam on the red carpet behind the scenes people like me work so hard
00:47What message have you got for someone that hasn't achieved what they want to achieve yet?
00:50I think persistence really matters, you know
00:52I think knowing what you want and taking a step toward it every day
00:55I mean, I really do think that little by little I always say you get somewhere like like how does
01:00a mouse chew through a wall like one bite at a time?
01:03Oh, I think you're a good mouse
01:04Thank you
01:07Nice
01:072011 in the Bastards
01:10Look how far you've come
01:11Wait, that was your first interview?
01:13Yeah, with you
01:13Oh my god
01:14It was a full circle moment, eh?
01:16Yeah, have you been have you had the same ups and downs as me?
01:20Very much so they're still freezing cold
01:22Okay
01:22So you've been Oscar nominated for writing, acting and now you're directing musicals
01:27Are you always wanting to push yourself and prove yourself?
01:29You know, why this?
01:32Yes, I mean there's two things one is I know this world of community theater better than any other world
01:36So in a way, it's not like a big stretch to write about because I just know this world
01:40So on the other hand, yes, I'm constantly trying to challenge myself because I just work better that way
01:46I think a lot of people in the arts have that same feeling like I start getting stale if I
01:51do the same thing, you know
01:52You're doing pretty well
01:53In fact, you're doing incredibly well
01:54This film is unbelievable
01:55Oh, thank you
01:56You must feel like it's a baby out there
02:00That's an intimidating feeling because when you work on a movie you're working for like three years with all people
02:06who like it, you know
02:07And then they start playing it for people and some people don't like it and it's just a strange phenomenon
02:10of like
02:11Oh, I forgot I forgot this is for other people too
02:14And so it's weird
02:15This is like maybe my favorite thing I'll ever make because it has everything I like about it
02:20Everything I like in entertainment
02:22It's absurdly funny and also tragic and has music
02:28It's like my favorite thing so I feel a little bit almost worried and paralyzed
02:32No, no, I feel good about that
02:34What I'm saying is I feel paralyzed for the next one because I put everything in that I like
02:37Have a little break, go to the countryside, put your phone on
02:41Everybody tells me stuff like that
02:43I don't know why
02:45Yeah, they tell me chocolate and they also say the countryside thing and they mention the phone
02:49Yeah
02:51It's a weird thing to constantly get told
02:53And what about any song you can put in your daily life?
02:56Any song from musical?
02:57What are you whacking in on the old soundtrack?
02:59Wait, what do you mean?
03:00Like a song from another person?
03:02Yes
03:03Okay, Stephen Sondheim's Someone in a Tree
03:05It's kind of an obscure song but he said it was his favorite
03:08And it's my favorite
03:09And it's from the show Pacific Overtures
03:11And I think I just lost the audience
03:13What about what song you know off my heart from any musical?
03:17Is there any that you actually know word for word?
03:20Yeah, I know I saw Jesus Christ Superstar last night
03:22I know every single word of that show
03:23That's this is
03:24This is not a
03:26I'm not bragging
03:27This is an embarrassing thing
03:28But I know the every word to many many musicals
03:32Yeah
03:32Do you want to speak with it in the theater though?
03:34Sings it along and talks along with the line?
03:36Yesterday during Jesus Christ Superstar
03:38I started mouthing it and I caught myself
03:40But I was just at such fun rhythm
03:41You know from Mr. Tim Rice
03:43And yeah
03:44And no, no, no, no
03:45Luckily I think I annoyed the person to my right
03:47But the person to my left was fine
03:48I would actually love to sit next to you in the theater
03:50No, you won't
03:51Okay, thank you
03:52And what about the fact that you know
03:54This is not the Oscar prize
03:56Does that ever get
03:57Do you want to lock that away and shut that off
03:59Or do you embrace it?
04:00How does it work?
04:01Oh no, it's very exciting
04:02Very nice
04:02I'm so glad
04:03I hope Julianne wins every award
04:05And I think she should
04:06Of course
04:06You know, she's the greatest
04:08In terms of that stuff
04:09I mean, I really think like
04:10I'm lucky to be here in London
04:12I'm lucky to get to go to any award show
04:14And sit in any seat
04:15You know, I really view all of this as like
04:18Unexpected
04:18Because it is, you know
04:20And so I
04:21It keeps me happy
04:23Because I don't have expectations of anything
04:25You know
04:25Have you ever had a project
04:26Where your family's been like
04:27Dad, stop
04:28Just stop
04:29You stop talking about it
04:31Just stop kind of
04:31Do you know what I mean?
04:32You get so obsessed with it
04:33Oh my god, of course, yes
04:35I mean, this movie
04:37I was playing musical theater loudly every day
04:40Before my kid goes to school
04:41And so yeah
04:42I was like
04:42But this is what the movie's about
04:43And they're like
04:43Well, we're not in the movie
04:45So yeah
04:45The next movie they can be in
04:46Yes, I tease it at home
04:48Yes
04:49Yeah
04:50It's great to see you again
04:51Give me a hug
04:51Thanks, Jesse
04:52Cheers, my friend
04:53Nice to see you
04:53Hello, I'm Lucy
04:54Hi, how you doing, Lucy?
04:55I'm good, nice to meet you
04:57Nice to meet you
04:58Thank you very much
04:59It's to match your eyes
05:00So there you go
05:01Thank you very much, you do
05:01So you are in this amazing film
05:03The Oscar bars are so exciting
05:05How about that, right?
05:06Do you
05:06Does that excite you as an actor
05:08Or do you have to kind of get that noise out?
05:10Oh, you know what?
05:11I look at it like
05:11It's unicorns and icing
05:12It's great
05:13We love it
05:14But it's not the cake
05:15The cake is the work
05:16And to be able to make the thing
05:17And be able to make something with Jesse Eisenberg
05:19And Julianne Moore
05:20And Paul Giamatti
05:21That's a dream come true
05:22For a working stiff like me
05:23It's so, so exciting
05:25Yeah
05:25Are you a musical fan?
05:26Can you do your jazz acts?
05:30Absolutely
05:31Oh, I love it
05:32One of my first roles in high school
05:34That got me hooked on acting
05:35Was in Hello, Dolly
05:36And The Pajama Game
05:38Like a lot of kids my age
05:39You know
05:40The Hello, Dolly
05:42Absolutely
05:42Hello, Dolly
05:44Well, hello
05:45Oh my gosh
05:46You're going to get me going
05:46And you two went to school together
05:49Who?
05:50You two
05:50You went to the same school
05:51No, we didn't, did we?
05:54I didn't know that
05:55Oh, we're Penn Staters together
05:56That's right
05:57Oh my God
05:57I totally forgot
05:58Thank you
05:58I'm just like
05:59I don't know
06:00I didn't
06:00Well, she wasn't dressed
06:01Rebecca wasn't dressed like that
06:02When we were on set
06:03I can tell you that
06:06We did go to the same school
06:07Except I went
06:08A thousand years
06:10Before she did
06:11That's why
06:11I'm like
06:11What are you talking about?
06:17It's amazing
06:18She's luminescent
06:19She's one of those
06:20She's a unicorn
06:21I'm sure she doesn't think
06:22About it like that
06:23But she walks in the room
06:24And your head's on a swivel
06:25Going, oh wow
06:27There she is
06:28But the great thing is
06:28She leaves with her eyes
06:30And her heart
06:30She's got such givingness
06:32About her, you know
06:32And as an actor
06:33You want that
06:34And of course
06:34She's Julianne Moore
06:35We're not fooling anybody
06:36She's a movie star
06:38But what she does
06:38Is immediately put you at ease
06:40And she also
06:41Is all about like
06:42How's the scene work?
06:42What's my character want?
06:43Which is a great reminder
06:44Of regardless of how far
06:46You travel up and down the scale
06:47Oh, that's
06:48Yeah, the buzz
06:49All the way
06:50I'm not going to get involved
06:51In that
06:51Although I will vote for her
06:52If I can
06:53And there's no doubt about it
06:54And just quickly
06:55If you could prompt yourself
06:56In any musical
06:57And you are doing
06:58The debut night for it
07:00On the West End
07:01What are you the leading man in?
07:03Oh, I'm going to play
07:04Billy in Chicago
07:06Yes, he is
07:06Come on
07:07All I care about is love
07:10Any producers out there
07:11I am dead serious
07:12I'll be there
07:13Anywhere in the world
07:14I could have just got you
07:15A new job now
07:16I hope so
07:16I'll come back
07:17And give you your commission
07:18My agent
07:18Call her
07:19Amazing
07:20Oh my god
07:20You're so sweet
07:21How is London?
07:22First of all
07:22You have beautiful eyes
07:23Fade star
07:24Like, oh my god
07:27I can't
07:27I've always like
07:28Wonder what it's like
07:29To have just like
07:29Bright light colored eyes
07:31Oh, thank you very much
07:32You look gorgeous
07:32Love your little details
07:33They all match
07:34Thank you
07:35So can you believe
07:35You're at the debut
07:36At the last night
07:37Of the London Film Festival
07:38With Ginny Amor
07:39And you know
07:40This is pretty cool
07:42So cool
07:43Like, oh my god
07:44Sorry, I just saw
07:45Patrick who plays my dad
07:47In the film
07:47He's the best
07:48It's my dad
07:48It's my dad
07:50We went to the same college
07:52Years apart
07:52But yeah
07:53I love that
07:53I want to know then
07:54If you were going to watch a musical
07:57What would you put yourself in
07:58Debut
07:59You know, you could be the lead
08:00I could be the lead
08:01Yes
08:01Oh my god
08:02Well, I want to
08:03I want to
08:03I want to
08:04Put this on camera
08:05Because no one knows this musical
08:07And I would love to do it someday
08:09But I would want to play
08:10The lead role in Violet
08:12That's the name of the musical
08:13Violet and Violet
08:14It's like this old
08:15Bluegrass country musical
08:16From the 90s
08:17And I just would love to be in it someday
08:21And you will be
08:22And I'm going to put this clip out
08:23In 10 years time
08:24When you've won an Oscar for it
08:25Oh my god
08:26Stop
08:27Well, maybe a Tony
08:28Yeah
08:28A Tony
08:30The EGOT
08:31Whatever it's called
08:31The oh my gosh
08:32And what about what
08:34Shamelessly
08:35Which musical do you know
08:36Every word to?
08:37Every single word?
08:38Yeah
08:38Okay, well
08:40Probably Falsettos
08:41By Bill Finn
08:44And gosh
08:45I'm like forgetting
08:46Every musical I've ever seen
08:48What about film?
08:49I don't want to say
08:50Oh, film?
08:51Devil Wears Prada
08:51Devil Wears Prada
08:52It's my favourite movie
08:54I can quote it
08:55Absolutely
08:56It's like the best thing
08:57Maybe we can get you in number three
08:58The film
08:59Oh my god
08:59I would love that
09:00By all means
09:01Move at a glacial pace
09:02You know how that thrills me
09:04Oh, I love that
09:05And we've got to talk about Julianne
09:06How good is she as a mum?
09:07Oh my god
09:08I mean
09:08In the movie?
09:10Well
09:11I think in real life
09:12She's probably an amazing mum
09:13In the movie
09:14She falls in love with theatre
09:16And that becomes like
09:17Her new love
09:18Yeah
09:18Which I think is kind of special
09:19Because we don't see that
09:20In a lot of movies
09:20It has to be like
09:21The mum is
09:22Like her number one duty
09:23Is to be the mum
09:25And I think this is a woman
09:26Who's been doing that
09:26Her whole life
09:27And then she finds herself
09:28Doing a community theatre musical
09:30And it's her new love
09:31Don't you love though
09:32That she's getting her chance?
09:33Yes
09:33Doesn't matter how old you are
09:34Doesn't matter how long it takes
09:35It doesn't
09:36Isn't that lovely?
09:37It's so lovely
09:37And I think that's what theatre does
09:39Is like it doesn't matter
09:40What context
09:41Or what level the theatre is
09:43If you find a piece of yourself in it
09:46No matter what side
09:48You know
09:48Of the table that you're on
09:49Or if you're in the audience
09:50Or on stage
09:52Then that means it's doing its job
09:53And I think
09:54Yeah I do think this is
09:55This movie is like
09:56For the little person
09:57Oh
09:57I really
09:58I think it is
09:59And she does a wonderful job
10:00At embodying that
10:00I love that
10:01Even being the superstar that she is
10:02And the fact that
10:03Jessie wrote it for her
10:04If Jessie's going to write
10:05Something for you
10:05What's it called?
10:06She's his muse
10:07For me?
10:08Yeah
10:08Oh my gosh
10:11I don't know
10:17The hazel-eyed ADHD quirky girl
10:20That's not the name of a movie
10:21That's a good book name
10:22It's a good
10:23We can write the book first
10:24Yes
10:24You know what?
10:26Yeah
10:26I write too
10:27Maybe I can work on that one
10:28It's so bad to meet you
10:29Have a great time in London
10:30Thank you
10:31Wait what was your name again?
10:32Lucy
10:32Lucy
10:32It's so nice to meet you
10:33You too babe
10:34Oh my gosh
10:35Thank you
10:35Thank you
10:35Thank you
