00:00Here are nine ways to solve your storage problems using Walmart organizers.
00:05My preteen's closet was completely out of control.
00:08Clothes everywhere.
00:09And the door couldn't even open all the way.
00:12She really needed some more storage space.
00:14So I picked up a basic cube organizer.
00:17I love these because they're super quick to put together
00:20when you don't have time to design and build something from scratch.
00:24Once it was built, I cleared out her closet and gave it a good vacuum.
00:27If you're spending the effort to organize, you might as well clean while you're at it.
00:31I placed the unit right at the bottom under her hanging clothes to use up that wasted space.
00:37Then added fabric bins for all of her extra clothes.
00:40It was such an easy trick and helped her stay organized so much better.
00:44If your mattress is sitting on the floor or you just need more storage in your bedroom,
00:49you can make your own platform bed with storage built right in.
00:53We start with a three-cube storage unit to act as the front of the bed frame.
00:58Next, cut two-by-fours to make U-shaped legs for the head and middle of the bed.
01:04Lay a piece of three-quarter inch plywood across the legs and storage unit, then screw them together.
01:10Frame the sides with painted pine boards using brad nails.
01:13Then, grab some leftover trim pieces and other scrap wood to fill in the gap at the edge of the
01:20bed between your storage unit and the foot of the bed.
01:24Now, build a simple plywood headboard, framing the edging and creating two legs that can attach down to the back
01:31of your bed.
01:31Once everything gets a fresh coat of white paint, you have a solid bed with tons of hidden storage.
01:38Here's a fun way to elevate cheap fabric storage bins and make them look high-end.
01:43Pick up a pair of wooden shadow box frames from a thrift store.
01:47Unscrew the backs and remove the original art.
01:50Cut a piece of foam board to fit the inside of the frame using an X-Acto knife, removing the
01:55middle to create a mat.
01:56Spray the board with adhesive, wrap a piece of scrap linen fabric over the top, and place your photo inside.
02:03Assemble your fabric bin, drive three short screws from the inside of the bin into the back of your frame,
02:10and tighten them down.
02:11Now, instead of plain storage boxes, you have custom pieces of art that double as hidden storage.
02:18You can also easily turn a cheap cube organizer into a cozy Sherpa waterfall bench.
02:24Assemble your cube according to the instructions in the box.
02:28Next, cut upholstery foam to match the top and sides of the unit.
02:32Lay cozy Sherpa fabric mixed with cotton batting over the foam and test out the fit.
02:38Using a staple gun, pull the materials tight and staple it along the sides and bottom.
02:44Take your time wrapping and tucking the corners neatly on the other side, and finish by stapling everything along the
02:51bottom edges.
02:53In under an hour, you turned a plain piece of furniture into a stylish upholstered storage bench.
03:00To give basic fabric bins a custom wood-look front, grab about 10 wooden paint stir sticks from the hardware
03:07store.
03:08Measure the width of your bin, score the sticks with a utility knife, and snap them to size.
03:15Now, sand down any rough edges.
03:18Apply your favorite wood stain and let them dry completely.
03:21Now, just hot glue the stained slats across the front panel of your bin, making sure to keep the side
03:27handles clear.
03:28For another cute look, hot glue a thrifted placemat to the front using an upholstered needle to thread a handmade
03:35yarn pom-pom through the inside,
03:37knotting the tail ends together to make a whimsical knob.
03:44When your new TV is just too wide for your old TV stand, you don't need to throw it out.
03:50You can easily expand it by making the top thicker.
03:53Cut in unfinished boards so that it overhangs your existing stand,
03:58and trim the edges with decorative molding using wood glue and finishing nails.
04:02Pre-drill and screw down the new top through the old board.
04:06Fill in any holes or seams with wood filler, sand everything smooth, and apply a dark stain with polyurethane.
04:13Secure the stand to the wall with safety straps, and your old console now fits a bigger TV perfectly.
04:20If you have a small kitchen or apartment, you can build a stylish bar cabinet using a single storage cube.
04:26Start by assembling your cube unit, then attach a plywood backer panel to the rear using finishing nails.
04:34Sand two small wooden doors, stain, and attach them to the front using budget cabinet hinges.
04:41Screw metal mounting plates into the bottom corners, and attach angled wooden legs for extra stability.
04:47Style the inside with your favorite liquor, glassware, and some clip-in fairy lights for an instant, cozy, entertaining space.
04:56Here's a great weekend project to give a storage cube a rustic tabletop look.
05:01Assemble your cube and nail a plywood base over the top with a slight overhang.
05:06Cut up an old wooden pallet, sawing right past the nails to collect your slats.
05:11Then, chop them into random lengths.
05:14Apply a few different wood stain colors to get a nice variation.
05:19Glue and brad nail the slats across the top in a completely random pattern.
05:24Trim off any overhang with a skill saw for clean edges, and frame the perimeter with trim.
05:31Finish with a clear polyurethane for a beautiful accent storage table.
05:36You can also multiply your cubby storage without buying new furniture.
05:41Measure the inside of your cube and cut two foam board panels.
05:45Cut a slit halfway down one of them.
05:49Then, cut a slit halfway down the middle of each one.
05:53Wrap them in contact paper for a pop of color, and slide them together into an X shape.
05:59Place it inside your cubby, and you instantly turn one shelf into four separate compartments, for shoes or blankets.
06:09You'll never look at an old bookshelf the same way again.
06:13Clear off an old shelf and nail decorative aluminum sheets to the back panel.
06:18Use wood glue and screws to attach a thick wood slab to the top.
06:22Next, drill aligned holes through the shelf walls with a spade bit,
06:27and slide copper pipe through as a modern accent rail, capping both ends.
06:32Flip the unit over, attach another wood slab to the bottom with glue and screws,
06:38then install four heavy-duty caster wheels.
06:41Now you have a stylish, functional rolling cart with tons of open storage.
06:48Now, here's how you can transform plain, boring fabric bins into textured designer storage baskets using an inexpensive woven rug.
06:58I picked up a flat rug from Ikea to update a couple of my basic fabric bins in my office.
07:04Start by pulling your bins out and laying your rug across them, completely flat.
07:09Place the bin right on top and measure how much rug fabric you'll need.
07:13You want to make the rug overlap on the sides just a little bit,
07:17so that when you look at it from an angle, you'll never see it's just a cover.
07:21To attach the rug, grab a hot glue gun.
07:25Since we're bonding a heavy woven fabric to a fabric bin, hot glue creates an amazingly strong hold.
07:32I glued the rug down so the original bin handle would end up in the back,
07:36leaving a clean, textured face in the front.
07:39Wrapping the extra rug material tightly around the corners and gluing it down along the sides.
07:46Now for the handles.
07:47I picked up a piece of faux leather from the craft store and cut out a rectangular strip.
07:53I measured the original handle so my new leather pole would match the size.
07:57To secure it permanently, I'm using brass paper fasteners, or brads, along with a brad piercing tool.
08:09Poke a hole near each end of your leather strip and push the brad through.
08:13Because these fabric bins have cardboard inside the walls, punching through them is super easy.
08:19Use your brad tool to poke a hole through both the rug and the bin wall and insert the brad.
08:25And open up the metal prongs on the inside to lock it down.
08:29This creates a super strong, sturdy handle that won't pull off when you slide the bin in and out.
08:35I made two of these to hide all my craft supplies and binders inside my office.
08:40They look like high-end boutique baskets but cost practically nothing.
