Drake Maye for MVP?? Officially back in the MVP conversation? We are #live at Gillette Stadium!
What a turnaround for Maye, as he is now in the Top 5 for odds. Who is your pick for MVP if season ended today?
Transcript
00:00But that aggressive coaching that we've been talking about with Mike Rabel,
00:04I think you saw that and the drive at the end of the half
00:10where A.J. Brown drops the ball, Raritan drops the ball,
00:15and then you still go out and get it to Pop Douglas.
00:19So I do think that that's making a difference
00:22when it comes to the way they're approaching things on offense, certainly.
00:25And another big turnaround, and he got the game ball
00:27because I think he's third all-time in receiving yards as a tight end,
00:32is Hunter Henry.
00:33The first couple weeks of the season, he looked done.
00:35Like he was not there, and I don't know what was going on,
00:39but he has looked awesome.
00:41Well, I had a great weekend edition of my weekly breakdown
00:45with Hunter Henry's touchdown, the stick nod that he caught in that game,
00:49and show how he ran such a great route to get open on that great design,
00:53play call, and design by Josh McDaniels.
00:56But he's somebody that they're taking advantage of him in the red zone, right?
01:00They try to get to Eli Raritan where the pass was maybe a little bit late
01:04and a little bit high.
01:05He's supposed to come down with that.
01:07I actually had you in one of my parlays, playboy,
01:10and you got to make that catch.
01:11Oh, man.
01:12You got to make that catch.
01:13Yeah.
01:13You know, you got to make that.
01:14How much did he cost you?
01:16Well, I mean, I had a couple other guys that didn't hit anyways,
01:19but he was one of the guys.
01:21But, yeah, Hunter Henry is this, especially in the red zone,
01:24is starting to find – and they're going to him a little bit more, I think, too,
01:27or they're using him in pass routes down there.
01:31You know, maybe not – might not.
01:32If you watch them, they might not throw the ball to Hunter Henry,
01:35but he's in the design route where he has an opportunity to make a play
01:39inside the red zone.
01:40Why do they look so different, though?
01:41Like, you look week one, week two, and where they are now,
01:44it looks like a completely different offense.
01:46Better decision-making by your quarterback.
01:48But is that – and I hate to bring it back to it – is it preseason?
01:52No.
01:53It's just better decision-making by your quarterback.
01:54So you don't think if they had played a little bit in preseason
01:57that we could have seen better decision-making early on?
01:59No, because let's say Drake May plays eight, ten plays,
02:03Hunter Henry doesn't play.
02:04Right, and you're playing against backups.
02:06Yeah, what is that?
02:07Yeah, but it's more – I guess I'm thinking more of the comfortability
02:10of Drake May out there because he looks way more comfortable
02:13the more reps he's gotten going through the weeks,
02:16where we are now than week one, if you are more comfortable
02:19going into the season after getting some reps in preseason.
02:21But the problem is this – and I understand what you're saying,
02:23Courtney, but the problem is this, and we've talked about this
02:27and Brady saw them – the preseason for these guys today
02:31is not like what we used to be.
02:33So they all – if he plays in one preseason game for eight to ten
02:38to even twelve plays, what type of difference is that going to make?
02:42Now, if he was playing eight, ten, twelve plays in the first preseason game
02:47and then in the second preseason game he was playing, like, the first half
02:51and then in the third preseason game he was playing the first half
02:54and maybe a quarter into the – I mean, you know, a series into the third quarter,
02:59that's completely different.
03:01We discussed this last week with maybe Hoyer or maybe it was Ty,
03:05but do you think the injuries are a result of the way training camps are now?
03:10No, no, and I think when you look at –
03:13And so it's a little bit of turf here.
03:14Like, how many injuries do you see at Gillette Stadium on this field?
03:18Why don't we have grass?
03:20Why do we have grass for the World Cup?
03:22And why do we yank it out of the facility for a couple million dollars?
03:25We looked it up.
03:26Like –
03:27It's because the owners don't want it.
03:28They don't –
03:28But it's so silly because you're paying these guys to do nothing now.
03:31That's why there's such this – there's been a massive uproar of guys,
03:37NFL players going, we want grass.
03:39But, you know, you look at –
03:40You want grass.
03:41Yeah, guess who has grass?
03:43The 49ers, and they got guys that hurt.
03:45Well, that's because they're next to –
03:47Electrical field.
03:48No, no, I get it.
03:49They have a power plant issue there.
03:49But I do agree.
03:51The grass helps when it comes to planting and, you know,
03:54some of those where you see guys plant and then all of a sudden, boom,
03:57they maybe, like, blow their knee out or the field doesn't give.
04:02But why don't they just rename the field the New Balance Field?
04:05Like, they got the facility.
04:06And they'll get it paid for.
04:07Right.
04:08Like, it's just – to me –
04:09They don't want to spend the money.
04:10Buffalo's got grass.
04:10But they can get it sponsored.
04:11They can get the whole thing, make it, you know, whatever.
04:13Listen, I completely agree with you.
04:15Get a cannabis company to sponsor it.
04:17You're right.
04:17They do it in the soccer.
04:19Grass is, like, it's perfect.
04:20You know, you want to make sure you're taking care of it.
04:22It's because some of the problems that happens is with, Courtney,
04:25with your team, and I played there in Pittsburgh.
04:27They have grass.
04:28But there'll be giant chunks of it coming up because of if it's not properly taken care of and the
04:34weather.
04:35Miami was like that, too, back in the day.
04:38Yeah, because Miami used to have the baseball field.
04:40Remember?
04:41That was a nice comeback win for your Steelers.
04:44It was a great comeback.
04:45And a great troll by Aaron Rodgers.
04:48Aaron Rodgers is – he's going to go out in style here, Curtis.
04:52He's going to give it one more run at it here, I think.
04:55I would say fast walk.
04:56Yeah.
04:57But, yes, he looked – I watched that whole end of that game into overtime.
05:01What would you – so it is smart to take the ball first.
05:04That's the right thing to do in the new rules.
05:06I mean, I would do that.
05:07My other question watching that game, Greg, Rodgers looked awesome.
05:10Yeah.
05:11Was – so you have 10 minutes, and the rule is each team gets the ball.
05:15Yes.
05:16The Steelers' drive was, like, eight minutes.
05:18Yeah.
05:18What if you have the ball for nine minutes and 59 seconds and you kick a field goal?
05:22The other team doesn't get the ball.
05:23That's just the way it is.
05:25Would that just end, or would the other team get the ball?
05:26Yeah, because Pittsburgh almost ate up the whole quarter there.
05:30Yeah, now that's –
05:31No, you both get the ball.
05:32Right.
05:32But not if you have the ball for 10 minutes.
05:33Yeah, not if you – yeah.
05:35I would double-check on that.
05:36No, I don't think they go until a second overtime.
05:38If the clock runs out, the game's over, period.
05:40The game's over.
05:40It can end in a tie, or if Pittsburgh kicks a field goal as the clock expires,
05:44then nobody else gets the ball.
05:45So then, of course, you want to get the ball first.
05:47Yeah.
05:48That's not even – yeah.
05:49You want to get – definitely.
05:50No, but they won the toss and they kicked.
05:52The Bucs won the toss.
05:54Yeah.
05:54And they decided to kick it to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
05:56Yeah, but what Courtney's saying is if you win the toss,
05:59you should always receive and want the football first.
06:02Okay.
06:02So if you do get into – in the situation like the Bucs, right,
06:06they only had, what, two minutes to go at the end of it.
06:09If the team eats up and has that eight-, nine-minute drive and you won the toss
06:14and you're like, damn, we should have took the ball first.
06:16Now we left ourselves with no time on the clock.
06:19So, yeah, that's what you want to do in overtime.
06:21Did you see the troll, though, by Aaron?
06:22I'm going to blank on who he was going up against.
06:24Trotter.
06:24Yeah, and he's like, I played against you.
06:26I remember playing against your dad.
06:27He was better.
06:28Yeah.
06:28Yeah.
06:28No, I mean, I think Pittsburgh is just, you know,
06:33Rodgers is hit or miss, though.
06:34That's the thing with Rodgers for me.
06:36He's not going to make bad decisions and, like,
06:40because he's always been very careful with the football.
06:42It's just when I say hit or miss, it's like,
06:45are you going to get great young-looking Rodgers
06:48or are you going to get old man Rodgers?
06:50And old man Rodgers, I feel watching, sometimes looks like he just gives up.
06:54Oh, yeah, he's like, you don't give an F.
06:55He's like, yeah, I don't have it today.
06:57Yeah, I know this is my last year, so it's like, whatever.
07:00Also, is it an issue if your head coach is injured on the football field
07:04and has to go to the tent mid-game?
07:07Yeah, I've seen that happen before in real time.
07:09Mike Tice blew his knee out.
07:11Got to pay attention.
07:12Those guys are coming at you 100 miles an hour.
07:14Was it Tice the biggest boob?
07:15Who was the worst coach you had?
07:16Childress.
07:17Childress, that's it.
07:18Yeah, Brad Childress.
07:18Yeah, he was a boob.
07:19He looked like a boob.
07:20But that's why I was my lead this morning is if you look at the AFC,
07:23there's not a team in the AFC that concerns me, scares me.
07:27Now, I think if you do what you're supposed to do,
07:32you look like a team that has a really good quarterback,
07:37a very good head coach who's competent,
07:40who's not going to make poor decisions when it comes to whether it's clock
07:45management, situational awareness.
07:47You look like you have a really good defense.
07:51And when you put those things together and you start to go, okay,
07:55what does it take to win a Super Bowl or get to a Super Bowl?
07:59The Patriots are complete.
08:01Yeah, but so are the Chiefs.
08:03I mean, the Chiefs have the exact same thing.
08:06You're more talented, I think.
08:08I think, yes.
08:09I think you have a better defense than the Chiefs,
08:11and I think you have a better offensive weapon than A.J. Brown.
08:16The Chiefs, offensively, who are you concerning yourself with?
08:20The running back.
08:21I mean, but I'm saying either the running back, but in the passing game.
08:25Like, all right, I'm going to put eight in the box,
08:26or I'm going to load up that box.
08:28I'm not going to let Kenny Walker beat me.
08:31So now who's beating me?
08:33Travis Kelsey?
08:35Rasheed Rice?
08:36Worthy?
08:37Like, I'm not worried about those guys one bit.
08:39I just –
08:40And who in the Chiefs' secondary is going to stop A.J. Brown if he's healthy?
08:43Right.
08:43Like, I'm not worried about them one bit.
08:45So that's kind of the way I look at the Chiefs.
08:49Like, and I'm not – like I said,
08:51I'm not going to take anything away from Patrick Mahomes.
08:53I still would be nervous at Patrick Mahomes
08:56because of how he performs in the playoffs.
08:58Well, yeah, and also I don't think you can count the bills out.
09:00Like, I mean, I –
09:02The Bills' defense doesn't scare me in a big game.
09:04And their coach, too, because this –
09:06with the C.J. Gardner-Johnson situation,
09:11I feel like the coach might not have complete control of that locker room,
09:17and that could be something that gets away from him
09:20if they start to hit a little bit of a skid and go in the wrong direction.
09:25Yeah.
09:26What a waste of having Josh Allen.
09:28Yep.
09:28Yeah.
09:28All right.
09:30As Curtis said earlier, near-perfect game from Drake May,
09:35who is, by the way, back in the top five when it comes to MVP odds this morning.
09:43And so Josh Allen leading it off there.
09:46Then he got Brock Purdy and Mahomes and Trevor Lawrence and Drake May at number five.
09:50So, Shyam, you might want to throw a trump in that direction on your guy, Drake May.
09:55Oh, I have already considered it, Greg.
09:59What a turnaround for Drake May.
10:01Feels good to be back.
10:02Just don't do it in pick talk because then it won't happen.
10:04Well, I bet on him to have three-plus passing touchdowns this week, and he did it.
10:09Your game picks have been – I saw Borealis, whatever the hell you pronounce his last name,
10:15shank the extra point.
10:16I was like, oh, man.
10:17I was feeling so good for Shyam's pick talk revival.
10:21Just missed the seven and a half.
10:22A lot of money was missed on that puppy.
10:25Bummer.
10:27Well, it'll be like – you know one guy thought like watching the game because –
10:32what did he throw?
10:33Three or four touchdowns again?
10:35Trevor Lawrence is having a really good –
10:37He is.
10:38And if they continue to play well and if they're a team that ends up with 12, 13 wins,
10:46I feel like –
10:46It might be his year to win.
10:50And it – you know, because it'll – it's always going to come down to statistics at the end of
10:54the day.
10:54And that's what it did last year.
10:56Like, you had a better record, I believe, than the Rams, but Stafford threw, what, 40-plus touchdowns?
11:02Like, it's always going to come down to the stats.
11:03What's up with the Rams?
11:05Like, they were the super team entering this year to lose at home after that –
11:10because you remember, they lost Monday night to the Bills.
11:12Yep.
11:13And McVay was like catatonic, was basically calling out his whole team.
11:18Yeah.
11:19And then they host the Cardinals.
11:21They're killing themselves.
11:22Yeah, they're killing themselves, man.
11:23They just like –
11:24Is that the biggest upset of the year?
11:29Yeah, I would – I mean –
11:31Talent-wise.
11:32Yeah, I would say talent-wise on paper.
11:34You know, they've obviously been without Miles Garrett.
11:36You make the huge trade for him, and he hasn't been there basically all season long.
11:41He only played the first game or first half of the first game.
11:45So, defensively, they've kind of struggled.
11:48And Aaron Donald's kind of been in and out of the lineup dealing with that back injury.
11:54Yeah, that was shocking.
11:56I mean, how many people had the Rams in their – what is it?
11:59Survivor pool show.
12:00And they came all the way back in one.
12:01I was one of them, so I know exactly how those people were.
12:03Oh, you did?
12:04Oh, my.
12:06They had the Rams going to the Super Bowl.
12:07They came all the way back in yesterday's game to take the lead and go, all right, you know, yeah.
12:11People were talking undefeated season.
12:14Yeah, that.
12:14I know, because they're hosting the Super Bowls in L.A. this year, and those two teams are 2-10
12:19combined.
12:19Who was Boomer's Super Bowl?
12:21It wasn't the Patriots.
12:23Detroit.
12:23The Lions.
12:24Yeah.
12:24The Lions and the Bills, I think, is what he had.
12:26Yeah.
12:27Thanks.
12:28Speaking of Bills, quite a win for Bill Belichick this weekend and his football team.
