00:02The European Union is planning a secure submarine cable linking Greenland directly to Europe,
00:09with ambitions to extend the network to Canada, to Japan and South Korea.
00:14The project is part of a broader effort to strengthen Europe's digital infrastructure and security
00:20in the increasingly contested Arctic region.
00:23The plan is outlined in the EU's new Arctic strategy, which is due to be unveiled on 20 October.
00:30The initiative comes amid a deteriorating security environment in the Arctic,
00:35where Russia has expanded its military presence.
00:39European governments are also increasingly concerned about hybrid threats,
00:43including interference with satellite navigation and sabotage of undersea infrastructure.
00:49Meanwhile, growing US interest in Greenland has added another layer of geopolitical tension to the region.
00:56The EU has already earmarked 107 million euros for connectivity projects involving Greenland,
01:03meaning the proposed cable would build on existing commitments rather than represent an entirely new area of investment.
