00:00A new bombshell twist in the sprawling immigration fraud investigation of lefty
00:04representative Ilhan Omar could potentially substantiate a wild decade-old allegation.
00:10Sources spilled to the post that federal prosecutors have made use of whistleblowers,
00:14government records, and now obtained DNA, evidence that could be critical to proving
00:19a long-held rumor that Omar allegedly married her brother in 2009 because she was trying to
00:24help him get a green card. One source pushed back on initial reports that investigators had
00:29gone, quote, dumpster diving in order to get DNA swabs of Omar, her alleged brother-husband
00:35Ahmed Elmi, or other family members. Though it's still unclear whether the congresswoman's
00:40DNA was taken before or after Homeland Security investigators raided her home in Washington,
00:45D.C. last Monday. So what could this DNA evidence mean for Omar's immigration investigation?
00:52Sources who spoke with the post said that the federal investigation into representative Ilhan
00:57Omar has obtained DNA evidence as part of a sprawling investigation into whether she committed
01:04immigration fraud. This allegation goes back at least 10 years and dates to Omar's entrance
01:10into state politics in Minnesota, but has dogged her since she's come to Washington when she
01:16was first elected to Congress in 2018. The allegation hinges in part on a claim that her marriage
01:23in 2009 to Ahmed Elmi is in fact a fraudulent marriage and that Elmi is her brother. It's unclear
01:31how much DNA has been obtained in the case, but it is known that this is critical to the broader
01:37conspiracy probe that is being pursued out of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota. The sources that
01:43the post spoke with pushed back on some reports in the media that this DNA was obtained in a dumpster
01:51diving episode that preceded the execution of a search warrant at the Congresswoman's home in D.C.
01:57However, several sources did confirm that the DNA has been obtained and will be critical to building
02:03up what is believed to be an expansive case involving a conspiracy to commit immigration fraud.
02:11That case is being run out of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minnesota, but it is also including another
02:17case in the D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office that is scrutinizing the Congresswoman's finances.
02:22Omar and her spokespeople have repeatedly denied any claims of immigration fraud, whether stemming
02:27from her second marriage to Elmi or stemming from what's more recently been reported claims that she
02:34may have fibbed her birth date in order to obtain citizenship when her father naturalized in 2000.
02:41The allegations that Omar allegedly married her brother in 2009 have been surfaced by Republican
02:49critics and President Trump for many years. And in fact, if it were true that she committed marriage
02:55fraud in this way, it would still lie outside the statute of limitations. But a former federal
03:00prosecutor spoke with the post, indicated that several acts taken as part of a broader conspiracy,
03:07even if outside of this statute of limitations, could nevertheless be important to the eventual
03:13charges that are brought. If there won't be a criminal indictment, it is likely that a civil charge will
03:20be filed. And that will ultimately lead to, as many administration officials have suggested,
03:25an attempt to denaturalize and deport Ilhan Omar. This would be the first move of its kind by the
03:31Department of Justice to try to remove a sitting member of Congress from the country.
